MY SOCALLED LIFE AS A GAY GINGER THE TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS OF A REDHEADED ‘MO.

rowing up I was always that redhead kid on the playground with the eternal sunburn. Kids are mean and it’s easy to pick on the different kid, as many gay men know. During my childhood my ginger qualities became one of my biggest insecurities. The irony is that today, it’s one of the biggest sources of my self-confidence— one of the many ways New York has helped me to grow. After coming out in high school in Pittsburgh, living in Ohio for college and then moving to New York, I can say my experience as a gay man has drastically changed from location to location. Once I arrived in New York, I emerged into a world I’d never imagined. I got more attention than ever before. Yes, I think it’s in part because it’s New York City and let’s face it, we do have a lot of gays. But I’d have guys telling me “I love gingers,” “redheads are hot,” and so on and so on. An experience I really wasn’t accustomed to before. Once, in Ohio, I had a guy turn me down at a bar by saying “Go home, fire crotch.” Defeated, I sulked into a corner of the bar, finished my drink, and left. If

“I’m not sure why latinos like redheads so much, but I’m not complaining.” I was previously self-conscious about became one of my most positive attributes. An ex-boyfriend of mine even lovingly referred to me as “ginger nuts,” which I loved. Of course, I still get those age-old ginger questions. So yes, the carpet matches the drapes (I can’t speak for Christine Quinn, god bless her); no, I’ve never had a tan and I will never know what it’s like to be tan; yes, gingers have souls (if such a thing exists, but that’s a different matter altogether); and I’m not sure why Latinos like redheads so much, but I’m not complaining. Oh, and we can’t forget the drunken requests to see my pubes. The answer is most likely “no” or “At least buy me a drink first!” followed by a “no” once the drink is received. But you know what? Being a ginger is great and I’ve come to own it. Perhaps this is all just a natural part of growing up. But I think it’s also a result of my growing sense of ease at being a gay man as I’ve been able to embrace my sexuality more and more. I could probably navel gaze about my journey as a redhead for longer, but the point is I’ve found a level of comfort in a community that I never imagined possible. This little ginge has stepped out of the shade, strutted across the playground and found a niche all his own. Sunburn notwithstanding. N

that happened to me now I’d probably throw an overpowering amount of shade—or, you know, my drink—in that person’s general direction. Luckily for me, these days I’d be more likely to find a guy saying “Come home, fire crotch.” I’ve been able to find a niche of men here who actively seek out guys like me. We even have our own party during Pride Week! Somewhere along the way this aspect of my self that

MICHAEL HOLTZ IS used to some healthy competition. The out hottie was crowned Mr. Gay USA 2011, was the first runner-up for Mr. Gay World 2011 and this week appeared on the new, boundary-pushingTNT reality show 72 Hours. 72 Hours drops three teams in a remote location and gives them just three days to locate a briefcase full of $100,000 in cash. Holtz was up to the extreme challenge, however. Compete Magazine declared him their Athlete of theYear in 2010 and later this summer the sports-lover will be producing the first annual Beach Classic for the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center. “One of my good friends caught wind of auditions for this show and said this had [my] name written all over it,”explains Holtz, who hopes to continue to raise awareness about LGBT issues through physical activity and sports.“It was hard!”

I started swimming at the age of six, swam in college and eventually conquered one of the biggest swimming challenges: I crossed The English Channel in 2008. Who is your favorite designer? DSquared2 and Park and Ronen. I am a sucker for Speedos and active wear and these guys got it going on!

What’s your go-to drink? An Old Fashioned. An oldie, but a goodie! Just like a southern gentleman. What’s your dream vacation? It must have some adventure, surprise, action and relaxation all in one! I prefer somewhere with warm weather with a beach and an ocean. But recently I have caught myself falling in love with the snow! How about somewhere that combines all these things: Hawaii! What album would you take with you if you were stranded on an island? Have you ever heard of this app called 8tracks? It’s a grouping of play lists people post and it has everything! I would take “Happy Mix!” My boyfriend and I listen to it in the morning in the shower and it would definitely help me get through a lot.

DOMA and COPYRIGHT LAW

A LOOK AT ONE NICHE ASPECT OF A LAW THAT DENYS SOME 1,100 RIGHTS TO GAY COUPLES.

s the Supreme Court prepares to pass down a ruling on DOMA this month, another in the laundry list of niche legal aspects that will be affected is copyright law. Under current laws, authors have the right to terminate prior contracts entered into with their publishers (after a stated time period) and recapture 100% of their copyrights, which they can either self-exploit or make a new contract with the same or a different publisher. This can result in a handsome bonus for copyrights that continue to produce significant income. The termination right belongs to the author if he or she is living—that’s not really the issue here. But if deceased, it belongs to the author’s “widow(er)” and children. In states that recognize gay marriage, does the surviving widow(er) include the spouse in a same-sex marriage? No. Since 1996, when Congress passed the “Defense of Marriage Act”— which among other things, effectively bars enforcement of state or federal statutes that entitle surviving spouses in same-sex marriages to reap benefits under federal law that would be available to heterosexual married couples—federal law has collided with the U.S. Copyright Act in states that recognize same-sex marriage, given the U.S. copyright definition of “widow(er).” The 1976 U.S. Copyright Act, though, which governs all aspects of copyright protection, initially holds the answer in defining “widow(er)” as the surviving spouse at the time of their death “whether or not the spouse has later remarried.” That means that even straight people who remarry continue to reap the benfits of their previous marriage, while gays are left out in the cold. Indeed, the“act of marriage”is wholly

within the jurisdiction of state law, not the federal government. Moreover, this conflict between the U.S. Copyright Law definition and DOMA results in inequitable and discriminatory treatment of widow(er)s in those states that now recognize gay marriage. My belief—and my hope—is that the U.S. Supreme Court will strike down DOMA as an unconstitutional interference with state law that, in the case of copyright, has been sanctioned under

the U.S. Copyright Act to extend the benefits of termination to the surviving spouse. But sadly, even if DOMA is struck down, this right will still not extend to authors in states that have yet to recognize gay marriage. Considering that this is just one small example of the many ways gays are kept from experiencing the benefits of legal recognition of our committed relationships, it certainly is time DOMA finally comes to an end. I was still in my 20s so why I became ‘Daddy’is unclear, but it stuck.”There was a stint at Tunnel where Dynell became “Daddy”to all the vogue-ing children, and when he DJ’d Boy Bar, a generation of drag performers started their shows with “Hit it, Daddy.” “In the ’90s, Chi Chi [Valenti] and I did Jackie 60 and by then, I really was Daddy to the staff and performers,” he says. “I guess after countless nights running shows in clubland I eventually grew into the name. Last Tuesday at the the Soho Grand party, I laughed as Joey Arias explained to a nervous young performer, ‘When you’re ready, just say “Hit it, Daddy.”’The tradition goes on.” In the spirit of Father’s Day, we turned to Dynell to tell us where to go to find a hot daddy of our own. —John Russell

It seems like every month there’s another party paying tribute to some larger-than-life icon: Night of a Thousand Stevies, Night of a Thousand Midlers, and coming up this week, the third annual Night of a Thousand Judys. In honor of the star-studded tribute to Judy Garland—a benefit for The Ali Forney Center—we thought we’d ask some of the promoters and performers involved in these over-the-top shows what other showbiz goddesses they think deserve the“Night of a Thousand…”treatment. —JR

N

Night of a Thousand Judys host Justin Sayre: “Bette Davis. The glares alone would be worth the price of admission.”

Night of a Thousand Stevies performer Darlinda Just Darlinda:“I think Kate Bush. She has created an amazing body of work and her music is so unique. Poison Eve and I do a Kate Bush burlesque show and we’re always finding new ways to honor her!””

Kate Bush

Bette Davis

NOTS emcee Hattie Hathaway:“I would have to say: Night of a Thousand Charos! Cross-cultural, crossed boundaries, from Mrs. Xavier Cugat, to TV, to comedy, to Vegas, to Gay Pride in L.A., working fiercely in the 21st Century—plus an enormous body of work including‘¿Mamacita, donde esta Santa Claus?’to ‘Cuchi-cuchi!’ Need I say more?”

Judys performer Lea DeLaria:“Night of a Thousand Lucys—as in Ball. Besides being the first lady of television, Lucille Ball was one of the all-time great entertainers.” Lucille Ball

Night of a Thousand Judys performer Martha Wash:“My pick for Night of a Thousand icon is Aretha Franklin. She’s been my soundtrack for decades. She can definitely sing anything she wants!”

Charo

Bette Midler impersonator Donna Maxon:“A Night of a Thousand Joans could be a rip-roaring fun time. And it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Joan Rivers herself, that hardworking mensch, would be there!” Joan Rivers Aretha Franklin

BRIEF ENCOUNTER

RANDOM ACTS OF KLAUSNER

TALKING POP CULTURE RANDOMNESS WITH JULIE KLAUSNER IN THE RUN-UP TO HER FIRST CABARET SHOW.

ulie Klausner is incredibly, scarily, almost paranormally perceptive. “You sound handsome,” she says over the phone, and by god, she’s right: we are handsome! We kid (sort of). The writer, podcaster and all-around funny lady is prepping for her first-ever cabaret show this week at Joe’s Pub, Too Gay for Brooklyn.“It’s pretty gay,”she says of the performance. “To be completely frank with your readers, I don’t think it’s gay enough. But I say that about everything: clementines, Liberace…”Luckily, we’re just gay enough. So we asked Klausner more about the upcoming show and picked her brain about some utterly random pop culture nuggets too good to pass up. —JR

J

A SALUTE TO INSOBRIETY: “Gay people are such beautiful drinkers! That’s one of my favorite things about gay people is that there are so few of you who are sober! I salute [those] of you who are in recovery, but there are very few of you, god bless you. And that’s not because you can handle your liquor at all! Some of you can, some of you cannot. But you enjoy life and that comes along with being able to have a drink—or several. You love drugs too. You love doing drugs. And drugs are fun! You like feeling good, and goddamnit, I love gay men.”

broke the fast on Yom Kippur together, which was just so surreal. I was just like, ‘Be cool, Klausner! Be cool!’”

[GOT SPOILER ALERT] NICE DAY FOR A RED WEDDING: “I understand everyone got murdered [on Game of Thrones]. I knew about ‘The Red Wedding’and I knew that a lot of people got murdered. And I will say this: I mean, at least they could get married, okay? You guys should be entitled to a wedding, red or otherwise.”

MICHAEL DOUGLAS’S OVEREATING: “If there were any truth to that, Warren Beatty would have been speaking out of a tracheostomy tube years ago telling Annette Bening what to get from Whole Foods. Cause he’s eaten so much more pussy than Michael Douglas. Don’t even!”

COOPER ANXIETY: “I would love to be [Anderson Cooper’s] friend. Although it would be frustrating because even his farts would be amazing. It would smell like a pine candle or something. It would be a little difficult being friends with somebody that good-looking and has his shit together. There’s no Achilles’heel on that one.”

A DRINKER OF SHIRLEY TEMPLES: THE ILLUSTRIOUS LADIES OF NEO-CABARET: “I’m not Bridget Everett. Nobody is Bridget Everett. Sometimes I think Bridget Everett isn’t even Bridget Everett! So she casts a mighty shadow, and I’m really honored to be on a bill where I’m essentially doing the show before her. I’m surrounded by big shoes. I’m not looking to fill them as much as I am to just sort of justify the company I’m keeping. Ana Gasteyer is amazing. Leslie Kritzer is fabulous. I love her. I look up to Sandra Bernhard…What she does onstage really defies so many categories, whether its comedy or cabaret. She’s just so exquisite, I just bow down to her. We

“I appreciate a good Shirley Temple. I don’t like it when people get too fancy with the grenadine. It’s important for it to taste like a cough drop. Luden’s Wild Cherry. That’s what they should taste like! I got one recently and I felt like they were being too fancy with the artisan syrups. Who cares? Just give me simple syrup with red food coloring with a cherry on it!”

VEEP SHOW: “I don’t know what Julia Louise-Dreyfus is injecting into her face, but I want some. She looks too good [on Veep]. I have a hard time looking at her sometimes. I just get so jealous.”

Julie Klausner: Too Gay For Brooklyn at Joe’s Pub, 425 Lafayette St (@ Astor Pl), June 18 and 19 at 7:30pm; $20 advance/$25 general admission (plus two-drink minimum). Visit joespub.com for more info.

HOW TO THROW YOUR OWN BIG GAY BRUNCH

TIPS FROM OUT CHEFS DAVE MARTIN AND ZAC YOUNG IN PREP FOR NEXT MAGAZINE AND UNDERGROUND EATS’ BIG GAY BRUNCH PRIDE KICKOFF EVENT. runch is probably one of the most important contributions the gay community has made to American culture and if you thought the breakfast-lunch hybrid—which usually doesn’t start till well after noon—couldn’t get any gayer, think again. Next Magazine is teaming up with Underground Eats for an epic poolside brunch party to benefit the Trevor Project at the luxurious Mercedes Club. As DJ Whitney Day spins, out celebrity chefs Dave Martin, Zac Young, Elizabeth Faulkner and Big Gay Ice Cream co-founders Doug Quint and Bryan Petroff will be serving up unlimited tasty treats alongside Blue Moon brews, Absolut Tune cocktails and the ultimate brunch necessity, an Absolut Bloody Mary bar. We turned to a couple of our big gay chefs to find out what it takes to host the gayest brunch possible at your own home. —JR

DIAMONDS ARE A PINES BOY’S BEST FRIEND

WEEK

BEACH PATROL

THE PINES CELEBRATES ITS 60-YEAR HISTORY WITH A SPECIAL POP-UP MUSEUM DURING ITS DIAMOND JUBILEE.

n 1952, the Home Guardian company started selling lots in an area of Fire Island covered in scrub pine that had previously been a desolate nude beach and a haven for squatters. A year later, the Fire Island Pines Property Owners Association was formed—and the Fire Island Pines was born. That was six decades ago this summer, and to commemorate the gay vacation mecca’s storied history, three organizations—FIPPOA, the Fire Island Pines Arts Project and Fire Island Pines Historical Preservation Society—are teaming up for the Pines’ 60th Anniversary Diamond Jubilee on June 22 at Whyte Hall. The one-night-only event will feature hors d’oeuvres and desserts from nine different caterers, a wine-tasting menu curated by Pines Liquor Shop, and of course, music courtesy of DJ Lina—because what would a Pines event be without Lina? “It’s really an example of the Pines community—some of the most incredible talent in the community—coming together,” says FIPPOA board member and chair of the event Henry Robin. But the event’s centerpiece will be a pop-up museum featuring photos, artwork and memorabilia from the hamlet’s 60-year history. Longtime Pines residents Scott Bromley and Tony Impavido combed the community for material to include in the exhibit, and Pines residents loaned their personal archival photos, artwork representing recognizable landmarks in the area and even T-shirts from past Pines Parties. Bromley and Impavido also put together a 31-minute video from the images they collected looking back at everything from dance parties to weddings and children as well as the gorgeous natural surroundings of the Pines. “They’re just incredible creative minds in the Pines,” says Robin of the pair. “The Pines really has quite a history,” says Impavido, pointing out that the area wasn’t always a gay destination. In the 1950s, he notes, gay men had to essentially have a beard in order to even buy

property in the Pines. Robin brings up the sign that’s still posted—now ironically—outside the Pines’ post office in the harbor’s commercial district detailing the original community’s morals. “It’s hysterical,” he says. “It talks about, you know, ‘the community frowns upon women wearing bikinis!’ So clearly the Pines made a shift along the way.” That shift to gay summer playground has been documented—in Tom Bianchi’s book Fire Island Pines: Polaroids 1975–1983, and in a recently rediscovered illustrated travel piece that children’s author Shel Silverstein contributed to Playboy in 1965. Though the gay beach community has long been known for its party atmosphere, both Robin and Impavido are quick to note that there’s more to the Pines than poolside gatherings. Impavido and Bromley made a point to include the area’s dis-

tinctive architecture in their video montage. “When you talk to people about the Pines, they always say ‘Oh, the big houses!’” “When I think of the Pines, I think of the arts culture—the biannual art fair that shows off the talents of the Pines artists,” says Robin. “I think of the different fundraisers for various different charitable organizations.” These days he also thinks about weddings. “I think the day that marriages started in New York, we had our first couple married either that day or soon after. Since then there have been numerous weddings on the beach—including my own.” Impavido says putting together the video was an emotional experience. “From tears for the friends who are no longer

with us to uncontrollable laughter over all the good times shared.” Above all, he hopes the video montage and the event will convey to people the peculiar and undeniable allure of this particular sandbar. “We’re just trying to show that it’s such a magical place. Once you set foot on the boat, you just all of a sudden feel this release of freedom. That’s one of the things we’re trying to get across.” “The LGBT community needs to know and celebrate its history,” Robin says. “The same is true for the Pines. [The Diamond Jubilee event] will give people who are relatively new to the Pines a sense of all the accomplishments and positive forces that have gone into making it the special place on earth that it is today.”

Sylvester

Lawrence “LT” Thompson

SYLVESTER PHOTO: FANTASY ARCHIVES

The Right Track Pride Preview: A Deeper Love By Keo Nozari s we hit our Pride month stride, we take a look at some gay artists both past, present and future. One of our community’s most important and quintessential out artists of the ’70s disco era was Sylvester. A product of San Francisco’s prolific subculture, he was one of the first disco stars to not only be openly gay, but also cross many cultural taboos: he was unapologetically androgynous, sang in a falsetto, was a flamboyant diva and a proud African American—a pretty remarkable set of circumstances given his success in mainstream pop culture, even by today’s standards! In tribute to the gay icon’s legacy, the 11 track compilation Mighty Real: Greatest Dance Hits brings together memorable numbers by the singer dubbed the “Queen of Disco.” Available on June 25, 25 years after his untimely death—due to HIV/AIDS complications—the disc will be pressed on 12” pink vinyl (as well as CD and digital releases). Additionally, Sylvester’s most enduring hit “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” is being released as remix singles by Jewel & Stone, RAC and the amazing Ralphi Rosario, who does a fantastic job of keeping the integrity of the original intact while still giving it a sonic update. It should be noted that Sylvester generously lent royalties of the sales of his music to two San Francisco AIDS charities. His music, bravery and contributions to the community should always be remembered. In the spirit of Sylvester we have the fabulous 2013 track “Movin’ On” by New York’s own Stars on 33 (composed of producer Kris Menace, guitar player Radical Peterson and singer-songwriter Lawrence “LT” Thompson). Thompson, who’s openly gay, delivers smooth, delicious vocals that are reminiscent of Sylvester-era disco beauty. The silky track delivers nightclub and house influences that fit nicely in a Body & Soul-inspired set, while the uplifting song’s well-written

lyrics and melody are distinctly and rhythmically current—a perfect marriage of retro and modern. Local fans might recognize Thompson as one half of the New York-based group the Kiki Twins, and this nicely showcases his more “grown and sexy” side. Look for this first single as part of the band’s debut album This Is Love, out in a few weeks. Finally, in a tribute to the late, great Peter Rauhofer, Ultra Records is dedicating their eighth gay pride compilation DJ Ricardo! Presents Out Anthems 8 to his memory. Released earlier this week on iTunes, the collection includes Rauhofer’s remix of David Morales‘ “How Would You Feel” as well as tracks by deadmau5, Kaskade and Wolfgang Carter. A worthy tribute! N

ANGELO NIKOLOPOULOS PHOTO: STAR BLACK

Outwords By Jameson Fitzpatrick

Talk Dirty to Me upreme Court Justice Potter Stewart once famously wrote of pornography that, though it’s difficult to define, “I know it when I see it.” I’ve often thought the same is true of good poetry, and with Angelo Nikolopoulos’ debut collection Obscenely Yours (Alice James Books), the comparison has never felt more apt. Drawing inspiration and many of its poems’ titles from the vocabulary of porn films (“Servicing Seniors,” “Brothers Knows Best,” etc.), Obscenely Yours pays close attention to what Nikolopoulos tells me he admires most about pornography—“its pageantry.” “The mechanics of sex don’t interest me as much as its accouterments: the props and tawdry narratives, all the orchestrated parts of a smutty mise-en-scène,” he says. “In this way pornography and writing are very similar given their emphasis on scene construction, on details.” Indeed, in the poem “Obscenely Yours: Scenes Two and Three”—part of a series imagining a fictitious fetish film— the speaker instructs: “You need the particulars. They matter. / Daybreak enters. // My shoes, I didn’t leave them there. / I left them here.” Here, as elsewhere, Nikolopoulos’ reader must also assume the role of collaborator, whether lover, cameraman or devoted fan. If Nikolopoulos’ obsessions are base, they certainly aren’t basic. For him, the pornographic form is a means to an end, a new way of penetrating the complexities of desire and loneliness. “The language of role play and fetish is so ripe with symbolism…I think there’s much we can learn from our fetishes,” he says. His poem “Self Suck,” for instance, contemplates autofellatio in order to consider the advantages of being alone (“Maybe more’s not merrier but messier”), while “Fisting: Treading the Walls” turns out to be a meditation on metaphor and faith. Again and again throughout his book, Nikolopoulos proves he’s a true master at mashing up the ribald and the intellectual. In another poem from the “Obscenely Yours” sequence, he complains a lover’s safe word is “too red,” before concluding: “I like it when you talk structuralism. / Your big fat red mouth, dirty speech act.”

Don’t mistake his intelligence for high-mindedness, however. “It might seem that I’m looking for the sacred in the profane, but I’m not,” he assures me. “I don’t believe in either.” Left wondering if there’s anything capable of offending the salacious poet, I ask Nikolopoulos what he considers obscene. “To talk about obscenity you have to talk about shame. Someone who’s acting obscenely is someone who acts without shame. Which I champion…But obscenity also implies an offense to one’s standards of beauty or moral code. And in my moral hierarchy, I find people’s high threshold for boredom to be incredibly obscene.” And who can blame Nikolopoulos for fighting the good fight against obscentities like boredom, tradition and, of course, the missionary position? N Angelo Nikolopoulos recommends: Our Lady of the Flowers by Jean Genet, Queer Street by James McCourt and Autobiography of Red by Anne Carson.

Bookmark ver twenty years since its author’s death comes the publication of The Hanging Garden (Picador), the posthumouslydiscovered novel by late gay Australian writer Patrick White. Following the intertwined fates of two children displaced to Australia by WWII, White’s final work is an elegant, exquisitely wrought examination of the loneliness of childhood and a particular moment in Australian history. White suggests—but never reveals—that his male protagonist will, like him, grow up to be gay. In this historical novel, John Schuyler Bishop takes a 250-page gap in rumored-to-be-queer thinker Henry David Thoreau’s actual diary and lets his imagination run wild to fill it. The missing pages comprise a 25-year-old Thoreau’s six-month stay in New York in 1843, where Bishop envisions Thoreau falling madly in love with a much younger man. Thoreau in Love (CreateSpace) will appeal to fans of literary history, romance and, of course, Thoreau. John Stewart Wynne’s The Red Shoes (Magnus Books) is the latest take on the Hans Christian Andersen story that has inspired numerous films and one spectacular Kate Bush album. Wynne’s version finds John Laith mourning the death of his partner—until he encounters a handsome young dancer new to New York, whose red shoes have gotten him nothing but trouble. N

Curtain Up Gross Indecency: The Three  Trials of Oscar Wilde Far From Heaven Good Television

THEATER

NEXTMAGAZINE.COM

The Tutors By David Hurst hen the Tectonic Theater Project’s award-winning production of Moisés Kaufman’s Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde opened in the summer of 1997, it was immediately evident we were witnessing a new form of docu-theater—dazzling and informative all at once. Having seen the original production several times, it was with excitement and trepidation that I ventured to see The BASiC Theater Project’s new revival of Gross Indecency at GayfestNYC last week. Sadly, it was an exercise in futility as the show has been insanely over-directed by Zi Alikhan, to the point where Kaufman’s beautiful play (not to mention Wilde’s singular genius) has been ruined by overbearing music, frenetic staging and stupefying choreography. First staged at CAP-21 last July with an almost identical cast (including a miscast Joshua Forcum as Wilde), this production of Gross Indecency has game actors who throw themselves into the work with passion and energy. But under Alikhan’s incomprehensible and maddening direction, their efforts are as exhausting to watch as they are misguided. Unable to endure a second act of lunacy, I did something rare: bolted at intermission. New musical Far From Heaven by Richard Greenberg (book), Scott Frankel (music) and Michael Korie (lyrics) won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. But, as directed by Michael Greif and performed by Kelli O’Hara, Steven Pasquale, Isaiah Johnson and the rest of the excellent cast, lovers of thoughtful and penetrating musical theater will be beside themselves if they’re lucky enough to score tickets to this ravishing and gorgeous production. Based on the acclaimed 2002 film by Todd Haynes that starred Julianne Moore, Dennis Quaid and Dennis Haysbert, Far From Heaven tells the story of Cathy and

Frank Whitaker (O’Hara and Pasquale) and the disintegration of their 1950s picture-perfect marriage when Cathy discovers Frank is gay and subsequently falls in love with their African-American gardener, Raymond Deagan (Johnson). Frankel & Korie’s score is rich in textural melodies and soars when sung by performers of O’Hara and Pasquale’s extraordinary caliber. Greif’s smooth staging and direction are a pleasure, and the production’s designers have outdone themselves with lavish costumes, lighting and sound—as well as a 12-piece orchestra. There will be those naysayers who quibble that the stage musical doesn’t evoke the same tone and ambience the film does, but how could it? Film and stage are two totally different mediums. And after sitting through dozens of dreadful “original” musicals the past few years, Far From Heaven feels like heaven, indeed! Rod McLachlan’s intriguing Good Television gets off to a smart start with an interesting premise about a reality show dedicated to documentary-style interventions for addicts, but gets too tangled up in its protagonist’s preachy emotional problems in the second act for the piece to be entirely effective. Boasting a strong cast of women, especially Talia Balsam as a blousy, deadpan television executive, Good Television is a diverting drama that will take your mind off your own drama for a while. I’m not sure who’s been selecting plays for Second Stage’s “Uptown” series the last few summers, but whoever it is needs to keep reading this paragraph! Their opener this summer is Erica Lipez’s The Tutors, a ridiculous piece of writing redeemed only by its cast, including the adorable Keith Nobbs and Matt Dellapina as roommates and business partners, and Chris Perfetti as a troubled, rich high-school boy who befriends and blackmails them. Lipez, an NYU grad who writes for the USA series Suits, occasionally pens some crisp dialogue and gives Perfetti some zingy oneliners that land. But Aubrey Dollar’s schizoid hallucinations of an online client and the gay subplot between Nobbs and Dellapina laughably defy credulity. N Gross Indecency plays thru June 16 at the Abingdon (312 W 36th St, GayFestNYC.com). Far From Heaven plays thru July 7 at Playwrights Horizons (416 W 42nd St, PlaywrightsHorizons.org). Good Television plays thru June 16 at Atlantic Stage 2 (330 W 16th St, AtlanticTheater.org). The Tutors plays through June 16 at the McGinn/Cazale (2162 Broadway, 2ST.com).

IN MEMORY OF A HERO David Kato in Call Me Kuchu

Reel Love Twenty Feet from Stardom

Call Me Kuchu Time Investment: 87 min. Return on Investment: 87 min. t’s easy to take an issue like the ubiquitous homophobia in Uganda and make it into an exotic and fatalistic paradigm, one in which the country’s gay denizens hide in sewers or hang from the gallows in the public square (the latter, horrifically enough, isn’t completely off-target). But the insightful and extremely moving documentary Call Me Kuchu resonates more on a personal level; just like everywhere else, people here try the best they can to live their lives, finding a modicum of acceptance (and safety) while also being true to who they are on a daily basis. Along with his friends, David Kato, the film’s protagonist and the fallen hero of the Ugandan LGBT movement, seems so unremarkable when we first meet him, so much like everyone else as he flirts, jokes and goes about his business, that we feel an immediate intimacy. He and his fellow activists become a group of crusaders, but they start out as people, giving the film much more power as it develops. Through the prism of this one socio-political issue, Kuchu encompasses the best and worst of what humanity has to offer. Yet the phobic, poisonous thinking in Uganda is so insidious, it’s hard at times to differentiate between the lovers and the haters. As a reporter for a Ugandan newspaper begins to tell his story, it isn’t immediately clear how hateful and uneducated he is. To their credit, the filmmakers choose not to further polarize the lifeand-death issues at stake, leaving us to grapple with them. —Dan Heching

Time Investment: 90 min. Return on Investment: 75 min. ilmmaker Morgan Neville has spent his career making films about musicians like James Taylor, Hank Williams, Muddy Waters, Johnny Clash and Hank Williams. But, just like—and thanks to— the subjects of his new film, people might finally pay attention to him. Twenty Feet From Stardom is his Sundance-nominated crowd pleaser that investigates the legacy and careers of American back up singers, specifically black, female back-up singers made popular in the rock music of the ‘50s and ‘60s. It’s a rockin’ doc that is sure to win over fans (even if it might have played better as a one-hour PBS special). Neville’s pedigree helps him score sympathetic interviews with the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Mick

F

Jagger, Sting, Sheryl Crow and Bette Midler. But most of the film focuses on the different generations of backup singers he finds to be lost American icons, like Darlene Love, The Blossoms singer who managed to make a name for herself in the early days of black women on stage; Merry Clayton, a career back-up singer best known for her work on The Rolling Stones hit “Gimme Shelter;” and Judith Hill, a longtime back-up singer who found fame on the last season of The Voice. The documentary is chock full of archival performance footage and it’s a real joy to learn all the famous works these unsung musicians have had a hand in (even, randomly, singing the theme of Growing Pains and making the noises of animals in Avatar). Twenty Feet from Stardom won’t change any of these women’s careers, but it might at least help earn the craft of back-up singing the credit it deserves. —Benjamin Solomon

By Peter Sherwood omewhere in the citified, civilized patchwork of streets called Soho, we found Galli. At once industrially chic and cozy, Galli is just the sort of place to meet up with a gaggle of friends while partaking in the self-proclaimed “Italian comfort food.” A terrarium of air plants near the warmly lit bar illumined by votives and shafts of Edison lighting were all most welcoming and further led the way to exposed galvanized steel duct work overhead, glossy black subway tiles nearby and the capacious banquette in which we were seated. My fella and I started off on a roll, or several—gorgeous, chewy dinner rolls were astoundingly good with sweetly thick, magnificent balsamic vinegar and olive oil for dipping—however, the bakery in Astoria from whence

they were delivered lay suspect as no one could tell us which one it was in particular. The Lansky cocktail was riddled with Rittenhouse rye, a gracious mix of sweetly bitter Aperol (of the Campari family) and herbal amaro fixed with a lemon twist. Leaning toward a Dance Hall Queen was a possibility, with Dorothy Parker gin, hibiscus syrup and pineapple among its more salient characteristics, but I opted instead for Pepe’s Negroni, finding Plymouth gin in my drink along with Carpano Antica, sweet vermouth, Campari and a bit of orange, which wet my whistle, to say the least. For a starter, pasta fagioli had a hearty tomato base, with a bite from red pepper flakes and noodles added in at the end so as to remain al dente. Ruffles of calamari fresh from the grill blithely danced over a bed of finely flavored baby arugula dressed in oil as softened vine-ripe red and yel-

low tomatoes also reveled on the plate. I love kale, but here I felt it was done a disservice; orange olive oil, carrots and almonds hardly assuaged its natural bitterness and only fat slices of creamy avocado saved it. Whole wheat spaghettini filled the Integrale plate with loads of garlic, rich cannellini beans and nutty escarole for a solid crunch. We shoveled in the eggy carbonara with abandon, accompanied by forkfuls of roasted garlic, smoky pancetta and peas. While we eagerly anticipated the Veal Milanese preparation, we felt only malaise when it arrived. The veal was overcooked and overwrought with balsamic vinegar and a salad of baby arugula drenched in oil. Veal fared much better in the meatball sliders, although it was really more about the tangy sauce with hints of nutmeg and cinnamon stuffed

into a delicious challah bread bun. Tiramisu was not entirely successful; it’s a difficult dessert to make properly, balancing the elements of liquids, solids and cream. We were much more enraptured while wrapping up our evening with

rector/cinematographer/editor Tony DiMarco well. This porn factotum does it all and consistently well. He even built this movie’s great circus set! ROD: Rogan Richards, Logan Vaughn and Leo Domenico are putting on a three-way circus! Richards is so in love with his muscular reflection, he almost misses Vaughn giving Domenico head. Everyone shares here, eating each other’s asses and taking turns fucking Vaughn. I’m running away to join this circus! MANUEL: Circus roustabout Rogan Richards is worth the price of admission. This handsome top could be the older, naughtier brother of Jeremy Jordan,

“Jimmy” from Smash (moment of silence, please). With Rogan’s fat brown uncut dick (“The Greatest Show on Girth”), no wonder there’s a sucker born every minute. ROD: When I watch Cirque du Soleil, I figure at least one of those guys can suck his own dick. But in this circus, it’s the bearded lady doing it! What the hell is with James Jamesson and that crazy Zach Galifianakis beard? It’s hot that he can fellate himself, but when Dale Cooper joins him, it’s practically a threeway with that beard in the way. MANUEL: Leo Domenico is back, topping Luna Genesis (still uncontested for Worst Porn Name) in my second favorite scene. Tall, gymnast-built, and Italian, Domenico reminds me of retired porn hottie Leo Giamani. Watching Domenico will definitely motivate you to help yourself.

ROD: Paddy O’Brian is the rock star here, but it’s his manager, Alex Graham, who made me “rock” hard—that beefy, smooth body...and those nipples! Graham negotiates O’Brian’s contract with Colby Chambers by taking his cock out under the glass table. Graham drives a hard bargain, but watching Chambers eat Graham’s ass sealed the deal for me. MANUEL: Graham must have misunderstood Chambers when he said he wanted to negotiate a “rider.” Meanwhile, fellow rockers Ray Diaz and Jimmy Durano relax poolside sipping pink frozen drinks. These are the cleanest-cut rockers I’ve ever seen. Their poolside fucking is less Metallica than Menudo,

but still enjoyable.

ROD: Whitney Houston never had a bodyguard like Cal Skye or Sebastian Rossi. At 6’3” Skye almost makes the 6’ Rossi look compact. Either way, these studs made me want to rush the stage to be their “Queen of the Night.” MANUEL: Rock Star didn’t really engage me until Skye and Rossi showed up. Their acting was so bad it was good. Then groupie Joey Cooper, who snuck past the bodyguards to meet his gay-curious rock idol, was just the right combination of bad porn acting and good, hard fucking. ROD: Cooper tells O’Brian he’s a go-go boy and then strips for him. Cooper fascinated me—partly because he’s so cute, but mainly because he’s such a bad actor—and a worse stripper! But once he put his face in O’Brian’s ass, all was forgiven!
