HEY NYC MAYORAL CANDIDATES! HERE’S HOW TO WIN THIS HOMO’S VOTE

Five things you should promise, and deliver, that would serve new yorkers (and tourists) well, From public toilets to nightliFe Friendliness.

hen I think about who I’ll be casting my vote for in the mayoral primary on September 10 it occurs to me that there are some issues that I, and no doubt other queer NewYorkers, would like to hear more about. Things that, if they were to be delivered would definitely win my vote. Here, my top five.

1) PUBLIC TOILETS: If you want to do right by locals, and the multitude of visitors that our state is spending almost $60 million to attract with tourism campaigns, how about some public restrooms? Why has Starbucks become New York City’s de facto public pooper? If CitiBike stations can take up prime street space all over the city, we can certainly have some kind of public restroom facilities as well. Hell, charge a dollar for their use. And think of all the permanent maintenance jobs created to boot.

Vinny Lopez

VINNY LOPEZ INSISTS that the idea for his popular web series TwoJasperJohnscame from a sort of kinship he felt with fellow redheads. “Somehow I know a lot of redheads who look like they could be my brother,”says Lopez. “I felt like I should Voltron our talents together and make something. And mildly deranged siblings felt like the best bet.” The offbeat comedy, which follows nine redheaded gay brothers around New York, released all the episodes for its third season on August 19.Titled“PersonalWealth”, the season picks up two hours after the end of SeasonTwo, with one brother flush with cash and another about to leave on a spiritual journey. “I wanted to make it more ambitious. We spend a lot less time in the apartment. We’re at the beach in winter, a weirdo party and we’ve even snuck some music videos in.”

3) BATHHOUSE ROCK: It’s downright embarrassing to reply, when a frisky gay visitor asks, “Where are the bathhouses?” “Um…Washington D.C.” Now that we

“It’s not like people aren’t having sex right now.” know how to prevent HIV/AIDS, can we please have our gay bathhouses back? It’s not like people aren’t having sex right now. Plenty of sex parties go on in private apartments—they’re easy to find online these days—but who knows how health-conscious some guy you met online is. Make these new saunas provide free condoms/lube and uphold strict health code standards. 4) HELMETS FOR CITIBIKE: If you want to protect New Yorkers’ health, how about helmets for the growing legions of bicycle riders? Increase the number of times and places we can get a free Dept of Transportation official NYC bike helmet. Heck, the program already exists—call 311 to set up a fitting—so make sure everyone knows about it and can access these potential lifesavers. 5) GIVE THE BGSQD A PERMANENT HOME: New York needs a queer bookstore, and the Bureau of General Services: Queer Division is a pretty darned awesome one. They carry amazing small press items you won’t find elsewhere, host readings and social events, and are always good for a sassy chat. The space needs to raise $50k by September 13 for a new, permanent Lower East Side home. Can’t we just give it to ’em? N

“I DON’T FEEL REMOTELY COOL enough to be a patron of F.S.C. (5 Horatio St, FSCBarber.com). It’s an old-timey barber shop in the West Village where they wrap your face in a hot menthol towel at the end of your hair cut. And who wouldn’t like that? But I’ve never had a barber tell me that he‘knows my head’before and so I’ve been going there for almost three years. They do not take appointments—walk-ins only. One time I got there early on a Saturday morning before the shop even opened to find that at least a dozen other gentlemen had the same idea. There were at least 30 of us queued up around the corner by the time we got to put our names in.When tourists walking past found out what we were waiting in line for, they took photos of us. That’s right—multiple tourists took photos of a bunch of men lined up early on Saturday to get their hair cut. And the construction workers drilling into the street found the sight odd to say the least.”–Nathan Zebedeo, 26 year old arts administrator residing in Astoria

WHY WE PARTY dJ brett henrichsen explains why he’s bringing madrid’s we party to new york.

hen I first went to WE Party in Madrid, I was just blown away by how happy and energetic everyone was. It wasn’t just the same costumes, go-go dancers and music. It felt like [what] nightlife was supposed to be: a total experience. The party is so popular in Madrid. They threw one once on a Wednesday night in December and there were over 3,000 people at it. The party was founded in 2009 and the entire concept is that “we” are the party. It’s all about the people who come. In the past, they’ve done themes like“Fast Food”, where they’ve turned an entire club into a diner and served fries. They did “Formula”, which was [racing] themed. “Vogue” was a fun theme on Madonna. On August 31, we’ll be turning all of Hammerstein Ballroom into an airport. There’s going to be fake security, machines, fun things like that. There will even be terminal announcements played outside; all of the scripts are written by Bruce Vilanch. You’ll go through safety presentations and baggage claim. It’s really going to be like you are going to something more than just a party. And there will be some very sexy flight attendants! We’re bringing over 10 of the sexiest dancers ever direct from Spain. They’ll be the skimpiest-dressed flight attendants you’ve ever seen. I’ve been a fan of Hammerstein Ballroom from having gone to things there in the past. I remember going to all of Victor Calderone’s Pride parties, and recently Kylie Minogue’s concert. I just thought, why hasn’t there been a big gay party here? So we’ve had the venue on hold for over a year to find the right dates to make it work and Labor Day turned out to be the perfect fit. It’s a spectacular venue, and there’s really not this type of event there very often. The music will be Susan Morabito,

DIVIDE& CONQUER BY ALEX ERIKSON • PHOTOGRAPHY BY KEVIN THOMAS GARCIA

CHRISTINE QUINN JUST MIGHT BECOME THE FIRST OUT LGBT MAYOR OF NEW YORK CITY. BUT THERE’S A LOUD COMMUNITY OF PROGRESSIVE GAYS WHO AREN’T HAPPY ABOUT THAT.

As the September 10 Democratic primary in this year’s New York City mayoral race fast approaches, the most divisive name in LGBT politics is without question Christine Quinn. The lesbian from Long Island, who now lives in Chelsea and represents Manhattan’s west side as the current City Council speaker, has elicited unprecedented vitriol from progressive gay activists— the people traditionally thought to be squarely in her camp. Call it the end of identity politics. >>> AUGUST 30, 2013 11

DIVIDE&CONQUER AND YET, DESPITE A RECENT TIGHTENING in poll numbers between Quinn and the more progressive public advocate Bill de Blasio, she has long been the assumed Democratic nominee. Quinn has garnered endorsements from The New York Times, The New York Daily News and—infuriating as it is for progressive gays—Gay City News. Despite a splashy fundraiser for de Blasio thrown by notable gay celebrities earlier this year, Quinn has her own impressive—and much more humbly touted—list of celebrity endorsements, including Lena Dunham, GeorgeTakei, Cheyenne Jackson, Neil Patrick Harris, Rufus Wainwright, Tim Gunn and DOMA plaintiff Edie Windsor. Still, let’s be clear: this is not an endorsement. We at Next Magazine have never done political endorsements, and don’t plan to start doing them now. We feature her here because she is a member of our community on the precipice of greatness. Love her or hate her, there is a very good chance that she will be the first out LGBT mayor of New York City.

n the current race, Quinn has the advantage of her record as the City Council speaker. It’s something she’s proud of.“Whether it was my colleagues, whether it was activists, whether it was labor leaders or whether it was the mayor, when I saw opportunities to work with people to get things done, I seized them,” she tells me when we sit down to talk about the mayoral race. But it’s that very record that gays who stand to the left of her politically criticize so vehemently.“Unlike anybody else in the race she’s a very divisive and polarizing figure,” says longtime gay activist Bill Dobbs, who’s known Quinn since her early days in politics.“But on the issues she’s been a lapdog for Bloomberg as opposed to a watchdog for the people.”He says she’s missed the mark on several levels—the slush fund scandal and her silence on stop and frisk are still fresh in progressives’ minds. That, coupled with her late at-

I

“It’s an enormous problem. It’s one of the biggest issues I’m going to have to deal with as mayor.” —Christine Quinn on the increasing unaffordability of the New York housing market tempts to move to the left “at whiplash speed, last minute”according to Dobbs, have turned him off to the idea of her as mayor. The notion that she orchestrated the manipulation of City Council in order to usher Bloomberg into a third term is especially disquieting for Dobbs and many other progressives. When I asked her about the perception that she’s too closely aligned herself with Bloomberg, she fires back,“You know, as the speaker, you’re the chief legislator of the city and the mayor is the mayor.” She frames her relationship with Bloomberg in the context of her desire to accomplish important legislation. “In order to get things done in the city, you need to work with the mayor,” she says. “Working with the mayor has helped us get tech jobs, manufacturing jobs. It’s helped get things like the safe housing law passed. We eliminated 67,000 housing violations in the worst projects in the city.” She’s also quick to note the times that she disagreed with the mayor and made it known.“When he vetoed the living wage laws and the prevailing wage laws, which would have put more money in New Yorker’s pockets, I stood up…and defended those bills in court. When the mayor said he was going to lay off 2,100 schoolteachers—like everyone else in the race, to be fair to them—I thought it was a bad idea and said so. I’m the only person who stopped him. When the mayor wanted to put an ill-conceived policy for homeless folks in place, I went to court and stopped it and when the mayor said he was going to support [lifting] the rent cap around people with HIV and AIDS services administration, I opposed that legislation.” A common theme in the narrative that Quinn detractors spin is that despite getting her start in politics as a tenant advocate, her close associations with real estate developers and the moneyed interests that have driven much of the middle class from Manhattan and Brooklyn disqualify her from getting such working-class

12 AUGUST 30, 2013

support. Many of her political associations, from Bloomberg to Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, have come under fire from progressives. Those associations, they argue, have put her at odds with the people she now says she most wants to help. “Quinn has done everything she can to hijack the working class and now she talks about how her priority is to see to it that there are more middle class,” says WilliamThompson supporter Allen Roskoff, co-author of the nation’s first gay rights bill and the current president of the Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club. Quinn, for her part, asserts that her plan to bring more New Yorkers into the middle class involves housing reforms.“It’s an enormous problem,”she says of skyrocketing rents all over the city.“It’s one of the biggest issues I’m going to have to deal with as mayor.” Quinn goes on to explain her threefold plan. “One, I have a plan to build 40,000 new moderate and middle income housing units across the city over the next 10 years,”she says. “I’ve found the resources and the budget to do that. Two, I have a plan for a property tax cap to keep affordable apartments in Manhattan and other parts of the city where it might be too expensive to build new ones—to keep existing units affordable for New Yorkers. Three, we need to strengthen the tenant and the rent laws. We need to give New York City more power over tenant and rent laws.Tennant and rent laws were weakened in the past. Those weakenings have lost us about 300,000 apartments. Those are apartments we need to recapture.” But Quinn also opposes achieving her goals by raising taxes on the super wealthy, to the chagrin of progressives. And her plan for increased affordable housing could sound like lip service to liberal democrats who recall that Bloomberg, who oversaw 12 years of building boom and enormous increases in economic inequalities in New York, made similar promises to dump billions into affordable housing. He kept those promises, but they didn’t stop rents from rising an average of 8.5 percent between 2007 and 2011. At one point in our conversation, Quinn begins to frame the mayor’s race in comparison to national politics.“There is a model of government where people put politics ahead of progress, where people put ideological definition ahead of the lives of their constituents; there is a place where you either agree 100 percent or you’re my enemy,” she says. “It’s called Washington, D.C. And I’m really not interested in any of that in New York City.” She paints herself as a democrat who’s willing to put politics aside in favor of getit-done pragmatism.“I don’t have time to sit around screamin’and yellin’for the sake of screamin’and yellin’when we need to make progress,”she says.“I can agree with you today and then make New Yorkers’lives better and then disagree with you tomorrow. That’s what I’m going to do. My job isn’t to disagree with other people; it’s to make people’s lives better and I’m incredibly proud of the progress that I’ve been a part of.” But what sort of progress does she mean exactly? Roskoff, who says he’s known Quinn since before she was publicly out, is skeptical.“As far as I’m concerned she represents the worst in elected officials,”he says.“She’s in no way shape or form a progressive. She first blocked and then watered down the living wage and paid sick leave bills. That, and extending term limits, disqualifies her as a candidate for the working class.” Quinn’s choice to frame the mayoral race in terms of the frustrating gridlock of Washington is an interesting one—especially in light of the left’s skepticism about her promises to fight for disenfranchised NewYorkers. Although she may want NewYork’s politics to be different from Washington’s, those outside the establishment on both ends of the political spectrum are asking more universal questions of politicians who’ve governedinbothcities, questionsthatsignifybasicsimilaritiesbetweenthetwoplaces.

he glitter, as some have said, is off the gay candidates these days. Identity politics were once a means to an end: gay inclusion and visibility in mainstream American politics. But many argue that we are beyond the point where the need to establish visibility by simply getting gays into office trumps all other issues. So as groundbreaking an event as the election of New York City’s first out mayor would be, you’ll have to decide for yourself whether or not Quinn’s politics and vision for the future of our great city match yours when you step into the ballot booth and cast your vote. echnically, summer is made up of just 93 nights. How did you spend yours? If, like us, you spent them twirling on the dance floor (perhaps for the last time at your favorite club), craning your neck to get a glimpse of Cher, shouting in the streets in celebration of the victories we made and the losses we suffered as a community, or just blissfully sun kissed on a certain très gay barrier island, there’s one thing we can all agree on: it’s always gone too soon. THE REPEAL OF SECTION 3 OF THE DEFENSE OF MARRIAGE ACT RESULTED IN ONE OF THE BEST PRIDE CELEBRATIONS EVER.

ooking back on the last few months, we can probably all appreciate various new acquaintances that we’ve made, whether while laying out on the beach at Fire Island or partying in the moonlight at a swanky rooftop party. But there’s one person all gay New Yorkers can be thankful we’ve gotten to know a little better since last spring: Edith Windsor, the fearless, open-hearted and perpetually classy plaintiff in the Supreme Court case against the Defense of Marriage Act, Windsor v. United States. For the gay community as a whole, the biggest highlight of the summer had to be the moment the news broke on June 26 that the Supreme Court had ruled 5-4 against the federal Defense of Marriage Act, declaring Section 3 unconstitutional and thus overturning it as a whole. On that muggy, slightly overcast day in late June, a crowd of revelers holding signs reading “Thank You, Edie!” and “Love Is Love”gathered outside the Stonewall Inn to celebrate the end of a law that had barred any same-sex marriages from being recognized at the federal level. Finally, it felt, our relationships were seen as equal under the eyes of the law. “ThestrikingdownofSection3oftheDefenseofMarriage Act directly impacts same-sex couples in NewYork in

1,138 ways,” explains Empire State Pride Agenda communications director Allison Steinberg about the significance ofthemoment.“Therearemorethan1,000federalrightsafforded to married couples—everything from social security benefits, estate taxes, family and medical leave, immigration status, income tax filing status and more.” The celebratory moment was made possible way back in November of 2010, when Edith Windsor filed a lawsuit against the federal government after being forced to pay $363,053 in estate taxes when her wife,Thea Spyer, passed away in 2009. If Windsor were a man, she wouldn’t have had to pay anything. After working its way up through the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, Windsor’s case was brought before the United States Supreme Court back in March.Three months later, the majority of justices announced they had found that the law denied same-sex couples “equal liberty” guaranteed by the Fifth Amendment, and it was relegated to the dustbin of history. "We were lucky to choose her before the media attention really started rolling in the case," said Heritage of Pride's Chris Frederick. "When the decision came out it was definitely an out of body experience. I was filled with so many emotions and as a married man it definitely made it more personal." Windsor served as the public face for how the law deeply affected the private lives of gay couples across New York, though her case represented only part of the picture. Two months ago, Next Magazine profiled a bi-national Chelsea couple, Glen Richard Baker andTom Shevlin, who for years have been struggling to stay together in this country under DOMA’s discriminatory policies against such couples. Baker, a citizen of Australia and the United Kingdom, was unable to renew his visa or obtain a green card even though he and Shevlin were legally married. Now, the two have hope. “One of our two pending cases was reopened in July and we managed to get an interview this past Monday,” Shevlin says about the couple’s current situation.“Because we have all the necessary documentation, the CIS officer was willing to approve our case without seeking further evidence that we have a

SONG OF THE SUMMER

BLURRED LINES ROBIN THICKE NO BLURRED LINES HERE: ROBIN THICKE TAKES THE SUMMER!

obin thicke’s “blurred lines”might be about the subtly of flirtation and those tantalizing moments just before two hot ‘n horny people hook-up. but the line “you know you want it” was actually what thicke was saying to audiences as his number one hit went straight to the top of the charts! thicke claims he and co-writer/producer pharrell Williams wrote it in under an hour, but so far the song has spent some serious time on the charts: it hit number one on the billboard hot 100 for 11 consecutive weeks (still going strong at press time) and so far is the second best-selling single of 2013 in the us (behind Macklemore and Ryan lewis’“thrift shop”). like nearly every“song of the summer”in years past, the song came very early in the season. that’s not to say it wasn’t a total surprise, though! Released on March 26, the song was near the bottom half of the charts for over a month. but a performance on nbc’s The Voice in May proved a game changer, propelling the song into the top 12. the song also got considerable buzz from the controversial video, which, in case you spent the summer fishing in the arctic or

something, featured topless models alongsidethicke, pharell and ti, who were all fully clothed. it’s proof of the old adage that there’s no such thing as bad publicity. leave it to a happy dance jam, the magic of cowbells and a video of explicitly naked female parts to rack up (pardon the pun) a major hit. thicke’s songwasn’twithoutcontroversy, though. some women (and their gay allies) objected to the objectification of the women in the video.there were also allegations by Marvin gaye’s family that the song too closely resembled “got to give up,” though thicke had previously acknowledged that song as his single’s inspiration. the song now has the family’s support. oh, and of course there was the sexed up vMas performance with Miley cyrus. We’re still reeling from that one. When did thicke become chart-topping competition anyway? after all, many had assumed this would be Justin timberlake’s summer on the male side of the pop spectrum with his release of a muchanticipated new album. While thicke certainly wasn’t a stranger to the charts before“blurred lines,”his previous peak was in 2007 when“lost Without u”hit number 14 on the hot 100.

granted, “blurred lines” was partly able to enjoy the success it did because there was significantly less competition from big names this summer. beyoncé—expected to be a big summer player—unfortunately never officially released “grown Woman” or any single for the matter. Jennifer lopez’s “live it up” was a huge flop, as was gaga’s “applause”. daft punk’s“get lucky”was a success, but just didn’t quite muster the same momentum. icona pop’s “i love it” was certainly popular, but it had been released back in May of 2012 and was kinda old news by the time this summer rolled around. the closer competition came from another somewhat surprising camp— Miley cyrus, whose “We can’t stop” might only have stopped by not being club-friendly enough. “blurred lines,” like many songs of the summer, inspired great spoofs, too. from Jimmy kimmel to the Muppets to bill clinton“singing”it. but ourfavorite was a Youtube parody where the face of Robin thicke’s father, actoralanthicke, isplasteredoverhisson’s faceand settoamashupofhis‘80’s tvshowGrowingPains’theme musicand“blurredlines.” nowthatindeedblurredsome lines! t about the same time Pride was sweeping the city, all of us at Next Magazine quietly celebrated our 20th full year in publication. That’s 20 years of putting out a magazine every week—except for the one week that Hurricane Sandy shut off the power for all of downtown Manhattan, including our offices in Soho. That’s 10,039 issues, save for the lost Sandy issue, consecutively produced on a weekly basis for two decades.Though many of us on staff these days were just kids when the magazine began production in 1993, we were more than a little proud. It was a moment to reflect on the enormous changes that have taken place in New York in the last two decades. When we published the first issue of Next Magazine only rich people had cell phones, no one used email and if you told someone what Grindr would eventually become, they’d probably think you were crazy. When our publisher, David Moyal, co-founded Next Magazine gays were just starting to populate Chelsea. In the early-2000s we watched as things began to move uptown to Hell’s Kitchen. Now, we await the next gay neighborhood—or, for that matter, wonder if there even will be another gay neighborhood the way that the West Village, Chelsea and Hell’s Kitchen have been. We watched as HIV/AIDS ravaged New York, and, as long-term treatment of the chronic disease has become more widely available, seen attitudes become more lax, and the epidemic continue to silently rage. Our staffers were there as the Giuliani-era ushered a dynamic shift in nightlife and shuttered many of our favorite clubs. ButfirstwetwirledatTwilo, dancedatLimelight, andspentmany an unforgettable night forgetting all our woes onThe Soundfactory and Splash’s dance floors, among many other places. “I was looking for a new business opportunity in the early 1990s as an entrepreneur to do something in the gay market,”Moyal, says of the early days of Next. What started as a business opportunity—a challenger, in full color, to the then black and white HX Magazine—quickly became something more. “We were welcomed very well,” he recalls. Back then, most guys weren’t comfortable enough with their sexual identity to show their face on the cover of the magazine, but he says, we still managed to be different and thought provoking. “Our covers were exciting.” Reflectingonthelast20years,Moyalisproudofwhatwe’ve achieved.“Sometimes I thought it would be forever and sometimes I thought it would be next week,” he remembers.“I would say two decades is and has been quite an accomplishment.” Does he miss the ’90s? “No. [I’m] glad I got to experience the growth of the entire gay community and how much more open we are now in society,”he says.“We’ve come a long way since the early ’90s.” Here’s to the next 20 years. REMEMBERING THE LEGENDARY PERFORMER’S PRIDE WEEK ENGAGEMENTS.

her breezed into new York in June with a new single up her sleeve just in time for pride. talk about fantastic timing! not only did her performance at heritage of pride’s annual dance on the pier cap off an historic pride, she also managed to squeeze in an appearance at susanne bartsch and brandon voss’s re-launch of their thursday night party at Marquee. needless to say, when a diva this legendary comes to town, all of gay new York comes out to play—and they’ve all got stories to tell. N

Brandon Voss: “Susanne [Bartsch]

and I put together a ‘Decades of Cher’ performance for Cher to watch [at Marquee]. She insisted on watching the show from a prime viewing spot, which meant getting her through the massive crowd and all the way upstairs to the balcony. It was actually quite funny because people stood right by the stage since the doors opened assuming Cher would appear on stage. Then at about 2:30am she appears on the balcony looking over the entire crowd and waving at all the screaming fans.”

CHerry Jubilee: “When she arrived she sat right next to us in the balcony. Shewasliterally10feetaway.Shelookedgorgeous, but surprisingly tiny. The gays went wild and stampeded towards me and literally climbed over me with their camera phones in the air. On the stage below they put on a mess of a show for Cher. But she smiled, sang along and waved as they paraded out performer after performer. It was especiallyfunseeingJesse

Volt impersonating Cher—for Cher—which she has been doing flawlessly for years.”

Brandon Voss: “Steven Andrade,

famed Cher impersonator, opened with Cher’s signature concert opening number, ‘I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.’ Cher opensallherconcertswiththatsongandmentioned how she appreciated the authenticity.”

Susanne Bartsch: “It was great

tobeinabeautifulicon’s presence.Cherisgorgeous, humble, outrageous, glowing— everythingwelove.Butmyfavoritepartofthe eveningwaswatchingherfaceonthebalcony as the Catwalkers like Muffinhead, One Half Nelson, Erickatoure [Aviance], Daughters of Devotion,BrandonOlsonperformedtheirbrilliant interpretations of her greatest hits catalogue on the runway. Priceless!”

DJ W. Jeremy: “I had the oppor-

tunity to say to her that I admired her as a performer. She was very nice and receptive. I mean,Iamsuresomanypeoplehavesaidsimilarthings, andasniceasitis, theladyhastoget tired.Butno,shewassupercool.Shewas also wearing a super-amazing outfit custom made by Ashton Michael in Los Angeles.”

Brandon Voss: “The funny story was upon her departure. She had a team of six security

[personnel] with her and several handlers who went through every detail with me about 10 zillion times in the weeks leading up to the appearance. The plan was after she played her song, we would immediately escort her to the limousine waiting out front of the club. I did exactly that, as rehearsed, only when we got to the front of the club the limo was nowhere to be found. She stood there with her handlers looking somewhat dumbfounded and turns to me, saying,‘Brandon, do you think you can just get me a cab?’By this point a large mass of people was forming around her and I felt a little worried the 67-year-old woman was going to be trampled. I tried in vain to get her a cab, but the street had become such a mob scene no cab would stop. Drunk gays started screaming ‘Stop! It’s Cher!’ at cab drivers. Eventually after about five to 10 minutes of the nonsense—which felt like an eternity—her limo emerged and scooped her up in the middle of the street.”

Marco Ovando: “I was the only

photographerallowedbackstage[atDanceon the Pier] to take a picture of her withWhoopi [Goldberg]. I was waiting there…and when she came out of her trailer I had my camera ready to snap the only picture I was allowed, and snap I did! Once I was leaving Cher said to me,‘Please take two more just to make sure.’ And I did. That was my only interaction, but it was cool she actually talked to me!”

GETTING CLOSER THE IRONY OF CHER UNLEASHING her new single “Woman’s World” on a sea of shirtless gay men at this year’s Dance on the Pier was lost on no one.The song is a fabulous dance track, the kind of gay club hit Cher has mastered since 1998’s“Believe.”It’s funny in the same way it’s so weird to hear Beyoncé’s“Run the World (Girls)”at a club where there’s not a woman in sight. But here’s the kicker: the rumored second single from Closer to the Truth (out September 24) is a track called “Take It Like a Man,”featuring guest vocals by Scissor Sisters frontman Jake Shears. I’ve heard the track and it’s incredible. It’s got “gay Pride anthem” written all over it. Too bad it just wasn’t ready in time for this year’s Pier Dance. As for the rest of the new album, it’s a more rounded pop album than Cher’s delivered in a long time. There are dance floor tracks like “Woman’sWorld”and“Take It Like a Man,”but they’re not as aggressively electronic as her “Believe”-era work. There are some down-tempo songs, like her cover of singersongwriter Nell Bryden’s contemplative, 9/11-inspired “Sirens,”reimagined here as a power ballad.“I Walk Alone,”one of two songs Pink penned for the album, showcases the younger singer’s signature bluesy-pop hybrid. And throughout, Cher’s voice is in top form—without a trace of gimmicky Autotune. Cher at Marquee

“QUOTED” Let’s get one thing straight: NATALIA KILLS isn’t worried about the dreaded sophomore slump. “people already know me, so i could tell my deepest darkest secrets and be way more cocky and open without it being misconstrued,” she says of her new album Trouble, out September 3. “i decided to write a whole album about the worst and wildest moments of my life. When i was really young my parents were crazy rich and had houses and boats all over the world. by the time i was 12 the cops had taken everything, my father was in jail and we were broke. i spent my whole teenage years with no money or good examples, getting in fights with my boyfriend, joining a cult and getting in trouble with the police. so Trouble exposes moments of defiance and repair that i’d never shown anyone before.” The video for the album’s current single,“Saturday Night,” dramatizes many of those struggles, juxtaposing the party anthem title with more reflective and gritty content. “You know that feeling when you’ve been having a shitty week and everything’s fucked up? somehow life just keeps going and saturday night rolls around and everyone’s having the time of their lives going out drinking and dancing,” Kills says. “i wanted to make a song about that feeling and a song that is like a soundtrack to my whole life. When i sing along to the lyrics i can suddenly feel like everything’s ok even when it’s not. and then i’m happy that i can just say ‘oh, fuck it! i’ll put on my dancing shoes’—and escape for a moment.” There are definitely what she calls“hair whipping, hip grinding, cunty songs”on Trouble, songs perfect for a Saturday night. Or any night, really. “i love going to Westgay on a tuesday,” Kills says. “it’s wild! it always feels like a saturday night at Westgay!” —Trouble is out now on Cherry Tree Records. THE GREAT DRAG can bushwig and miss Fire island coexist on the drag spectrum?

ith two of the summer’s biggest drag events capping off the season on the same day, the contrast between Fire Island’s polished pageant drag and the chaotic genderbending performance art that’s taken over the Bushwick scene has never been more apparent. But is the divide between Bushwig and Miss Fire Island really that wide? Here’s what some of the queens in both camps had to say on the topic. —JR

•UN

“I think to be a successful drag queen in the Brooklyn scene just takes the courage to be unique and true to what you’re interested in, even if it means you’re into something more traditional or seemingly mainstream. Not every queen out here is a circus act.”

“Not to be super gay, but it is truly a rainbow of performers. I feel people like Bushwig because they get to see everyone from burlesque, drag kings/queens and queer artists. We are a little more raw here. Very rarely do I ever hear, ‘You can’t do that!’”

“I feel like Bushwig is more inviting than the other scenes. We’re more welcoming here in Brooklyn if you’re not exactly what everyone thinks drag ought to be.”

Iggy Azalea

The Right Track

MUSIC

NEXTMAGAZINE.COM

Iggy Azalea Can Change Your Life, But Not Gaga’s Flop By Keo Nozari anelle Monáe‘s new album title, The Electric Lady, makes us think of an electric razor for women, so we guess it’s fitting that the album’s latest single premiere, “Prime Time,” a duet with R&B crooner Miguel, is totally smooth. The song has definite Prince influences. From its sparse R&B production to its electric guitar solo to its fiery vocal delivery and unusual harmonies, we’re enjoying that it’s a different side of Monáe than we’ve heard before. Here’s hoping the album is just as smooth and silky! You might recognize Sabi from her appearances on Britney Spears’ “(Drop Dead) Beautiful” and the on Cobra Starship’s hit “You Make Me Feel.” In October she drops her EP, Cali Love. Its eponymous first single, a delicious sun-soaked, urban-pop jam, finds Sabi declaring her undying love for The Golden State and features a rap by Tyga. The track might have served better as a summer single, but we’re sure this will keep us warm with California dreamin’ in the colder months to come. Just in time for the October release of her debut album The New Classic, Iggy Azalea releases her most commercial, radio-friendly single to date, “Change Your Life.” It might indeed be a game changer for Azalea. Sure it’s not as edgy—or as wellwritten—as previous singles “Work” and “Bounce,” but featuring T.I. it’s bound to garner Azalea some newfound mainstream attention. Switching gears slightly, in last week’s column we pre-

dicted that Katy Perry would triumph as both she and Lady Gaga dropped lead singles from their forthcoming new albums. Sure enough, Perry’s “Roar” soared to digital sales success selling an extraordinary 557,000 copies (the sixth largest sales week for a digital song ever), nearly tripling Gaga’s “Applause,” which scored 218,000 downloads. However, since the Hot 100 is determined by a host of factors including sales, radio airplay and online streaming like YouTube views, Perry got shut out of a Billboard Hot 100 Number One debut by Robin Thicke’s 11th consecutive week one top with bona fide Song of the Summer “Blurred Lines” (see p.16 And YouTube views got Gaga in serious trouble with the editorial director of Billboard, Bill Werde. Gaga had taken to Twitter and Facebook attempting to inflate her numbers by offering to fly the two fans who purchased the most copies of “Applause” out to meet her in person and sending a link out to millions of followers that gave fans the ability to play the video 150 times in a row on YouTube, essentially allowing them to walk away from their computer for nine hours while the song racked up views. Werde was not having it, though, and took to Twitter to call out Gaga’s attempts to “game the charts,” as he put it. While diplomatically maintaining that he is indeed a Gaga fan, he noted that the trick wasn’t cool: “It’s not in the spirit of what we do, celebrating success.” N

RESORTS CASINO’S PRO BAR CELEBRATED ITS SECOND ANNIVERSARY AS THE ONLY GAY BAR IN AN ATLANTIC CITY CASINO.

ere’s something that only a few of my nearest and dearest know about me: I love casinos. I’m not really a gambler—I’m way too high-strung to just throw money at a game of chance—but I love casinos’ over-the-top glitz, their louche glamor. They’re big and loud and flashy and, yeah, maybe a little bit tacky, but that’s their appeal. (When you think about it, they’re a lot like drag queens, actually.) Whether you arrived in a limo packed with your bachelor party or via a Greyhound from Port Authority with a $25 voucher clutched in your hand, it’s kind of impossible not to feel like a Champagne sippin’ high roller when you walk onto a casino floor. My one beef with casinos, though, is that amid all that sparkle and kitsch, in environments that are ripe for camp and excess, there’s rarely anything even remotely gay to do. I remember ditching my parents in an Atlantic City casino a few years ago after a Stevie Nicks concert, hopping in a cab and telling the driver to take me to the nearest gay bar. It was a dingy little hole in the wall in a sketchy part of town far from the twinkling lights of the boardwalk. That was 2010. The following year, Resorts Casino Hotel (1133 Boardwalk, Atlantic City, NJ) opened Pro Bar, making it the only casino in Atlantic City to house a gay nightclub. Along with the long-run-

ning Divas Do AC drag show in the hotel’s Screening Room theater and the quiet refinement of the adjacent Piano Bar, the 13th floor of Resorts’ original Ocean Tower is entirely devoted to LGBT entertainment. This summer marked another milestone for Pro Bar: the club’s second anniversary. Atlantic City’s premier gay hot spot celebrated with a weekend of fabulous special events in May, including a live appearance by Snap! singer Thea Austin. The weekend’s festivities kicked off with Friday night’s Divas Do AC. The drag revue featured old-school female impersonators turning it out as Liza Minnelli, Dolly Parton, Madonna, Patti LaBelle and even Prince, with a wickedly funny and razor-sharp ersatz Joan Rivers working the crowd as emcee. I spent my Saturday in Atlantic City exploring Resorts. After lunch at the casual Breadstix Café and Grill on the dining level, I headed down to the casino floor where my innate gaydar lead me to both Wizard of Ozand Sex and the City-themed slot machines. Dinner that night was at Capriccio, the hotel’s gorgeous Italian restaurant, with Resorts’ director of LGBT marketing Joel Ballesteros, Divas Do AC artistic director Mark Dahl and ex-Snap! singer Thea Austin. As we all dug into one decadent antipasto after another, I chatted with Austin about the staggering longevity of her biggest hit.

“I could not have fathomed it! It is seriously the most phenomenal gift ever. When I wrote ‘Rhythm Is a Dancer’ I was doing it in a dark corner in the studio in Germany, crying,” she said. “So no, I couldn’t have imagined it. We didn’t even rehearse that for the tour! But as the song gained momentum, there was no choice but to add it to the show. The world just showed us.” Later that night, Austin showed Pro Bar, performing “Rhythm Is a Dancer” along with more of her ’90s hits and a few new tracks for the packed club. With the anniversary party in full swing I shared a toast with Danielle Gomes, daughter of the late Dennis Gomes, the casino executive who purchased and revitalized Resorts in 2010. I asked Gomes what it meant to her that her father opened the only gay club in an Atlantic City casino. “[My dad] felt that everybody should have a place where they felt comfortable and could have fun. So he thought that this was just a fun, smart thing to do. He loved Joel [Ballesteros] and it turned out to be a wonderful place.” “Props to Mr. Dennis Gomes, for making a way for it to happen here,” Austin told us after her set—and after tearing up the dance floor with her fans. “It is joyful to be here.” N Visit ResortsAC.com for more info.

THEATER

Peninsula By David Hurst irst Date, a forgettable new musical music and lyrics by Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner and book by Austin Winsberg, is notable for the Broadway debut of Zachary Levi, who’s made a name for himself on television in NBC’s Chuck and ABC’s Less Than Perfect, and on screen in Disney’s Tangled. Utterly charming, a superb comic actor and totally hot, Levi is a bona fide stage star! He and his costar, Krysta Rodriguez (Smash), spin straw into gold with their undeniable chemistry in a silly musical about a couple on a first date. The supporting cast works hard and has a couple of funny moments, but it’s Levi and Rodriguez’s show. It’s a guilty pleasure and painless fun. And Levi is putting all the other leading men on Broadway on notice—he’s arrived! If you don’t already know who Shlomo Carlebach is, then the new bio-musical about his life, Soul Doctor, probably isn’t for you. Carlebach, a rabbi who became a semi-recording star by mixing traditional Jewish folk tunes with a folk-rock beat, and who apparently carried on a long-term friendship with singer Nina Simone, actually has a fascinating story—especially the friendship with Simone. But Soul Doctor—with its rudderless book and flaccid direction by Daniel Wise, its stupefying choreography by Benoit-Swan Pouffer and its monotonous musical score courtesy of Carlebach—is a show on life support. Nathan Wright’s provocative new drama, Peninsula, has plenty of buff boys and innuendo. Written in a combination of poetic verse and conversational dialogue, it’s the story of Tiago (Josué Gutierrez Guerra), a Brazilian trying to pull himself out of the slums of Rio de Janeiro and better himself.

F

40 AUGUST 30, 2013

Tiago lives with his girlfriend, Lily (Vanessa Bartlett), but he finds himself sexually attracted to a drug dealer, Nelson (Marc Sinoway), whose plan to escape poverty proves tempting. This plot line in Rio alternates with a second one set in Michigan where wealthy summer vacationers like Tommy (Kellan Peavy) and his mother, Mrs. Vaughn (Angela Atwood), avoid mingling with locals like Mitch Bennett (John Zdrojeski) and the migrant workers Bennett supervises. Tiago is one such worker and Wright interweaves his story of despair in Brazil with his story of labor in Michigan, intercutting and overlapping the separate tales of Tiago in ways both interesting and frustrating. It’s a character study of a man struggling with demons and searching for his identity, but its clear Wright aspires to tell a broader story—one that touches on issues of class, culture and sexuality. He succeeds occasionally, and the play is a significant step up from the usual Fringe Festival fare, but Peninsula needs a tighter script, and a director! Nadia Foskolou’s inexplicable, highly stylized, pretentious directorial concept—which employs unnatural, jerky choreography and angular staging patterns reminiscent of Agnes de Mille or Martha Graham—doesn’t do it any favors—just the opposite, in fact. A directorial conceit should illuminate the text, not overshadow and detract from it. Much of the acting in Peninsula vacillates with Foskolou’s staging antics, but Peavy and Zdrojeski are the most consistent; the two women’s roles, grating to watch, are reduced to two-dimensional stereotypes. (There’s an important seduction scene between Mrs. Vaughn and Tiago that’s played for laughs when it should be a dramatic turning point in the show.) As Tiago, Guerra doesn’t yet have the magnetism or acting skill to carry Peninsula the way the script requires. It would be interesting to see Peninsula again with completely new direction. But since Wright and Foskolou are longtime collaborators, that’s not likely to happen. N First Date plays at the Longacre (220 W 48th St, FirstDateTheMusical.com). Soul Doctor plays at Circle in the Square (1633 Broadway @ 50th St, SoulDoctorBroadway.com). Peninsula encores Sep 6 through Oct 13 at The Players (115 MacDougal St, PeninsulaThePlay.com).

LIGHT ME UP christine lahti and tobias segal in Petunia

Reel Love Afternoon Delight

Petunia Time Investment: 112 min. Return on Investment: 30 min. ex is revolting in Ash Christian’s new dark comedy Petunia (Wolfe Releasing). His Upper East Side-ish family of obsessive compulsives and neurotics, the Petunias, can tie all of their problems to their sex lives. For mumbling introvert Charlie (Tobias Segal) that means swearing off sex completely, despite advances from his downstairs neighbor (Michael Urie). For his older brother Michael (Eddie Kaye Thomas), it means a tentative, cautious marriage to the sex-starved Vivian (Thora Birch), who has no problem getting what she needs from Michael and Charlie’s hot sexaholic brother Adrian (Jimmy Heck). And the boys’ nosey therapist parents are at each other’s throats after years of sexless marriage. Director and co-writer Christian, best known for his 2006 breakthrough Fat Girls, has written a great script full of clever dialogue and wonderfully awkward moments of familial angst and bonding. But somewhere in its translation to the screen Petunia loses all of its momentum. The result is an incredibly flat ensemble piece that drags under the weight of its own ambition. It doesn’t help that the cast of largely composed of 2000s teen stars fails to bring the right energy to the flick—while onetime Oscar nominee Christine Lahti overpowers everyone. Christian’s talent has always been creating real world characters, but Petunia’s feel like leftovers; half-baked ideas that when thrust together fail to support his progressive musings about love and family. —Benjamin Solomon

Time Investment: 102 min. Return on Investment: 45 min. or a movie so sad, Afternoon Delight (Film Arcade) has a truly funny sounding premise. A bored Jewish housewife Rachel (Kathryn Hahn) tries to spice up her non-existent sex life by dragging her tech-entrepreneur husband (Josh Radnor) to a strip club, where she impulsively hires her sex kitten lap dancer McKenna (Juno Temple) to be the family’s new nanny. But instead of farcical situations arising from the kids being taken care of by a sex worker (“Mommy, what’s dill-dough?”), Afternoon Delight keeps its melancholy shades firmly pulled over its eyes. Hahn, who was marvelous as the cutthroat big-city campaign manager on Parks and Recreation, channels her inner

F

Woody Allen for Rachel who struggles to deal with her inner neurosis. It is never clear why Rachel is drawn to McKenna. Is she questioning her sexuality following months of sexless marriage? Or is she liberated by the presence of a girl who is empowered by her life choices? First-time director Jill Soloway seems to be struggling, too, with some early mid-life crisis questions about idealism, happiness and all around #whitepeopleproblems. It’s all mixed up with an awkward sprinkling of paper-thin Jewishness that never accomplishes the dark comedic honesty Soloway probably aspires to emulate from Allen. But Hahn is determined to showcase her comedic and dramatic chops, her drunken breakdowns over “the cloud” and the oversharing of her perfect lesbian therapist (Jane Lynch) bring light to this extreme downer of a film. —BS

By Peter Sherwood hat was once known as a no-man’s-land is now known as NoMad. It’s still kind of a strange neighborhood, and where we were adventurously venturing was somewhere in between NoMad and Kips Bay to boot. (Someone told us Musto lives in Murray Hill, so to hell with these neighborhood classifications!) On 29th Street, you’ll find Resto, a respectable respite featuring an amalgam of cultural influences that incorporates bites from Belgium, bits of buon Italia and down home dishes from the South on the menu—throw about the widely used and apparently all-encompassing term “gastropub” if you will. When we stopped in for brunch, a host of Bloody Marys on the cocktail list just stared at us. We stared back and ordered the Bloody Grazer as an eye-opener. It listed beef as one of the ingredients! However, we discovered it was

W

really just beef bouillon that was used, much like a classic Bloody Bull, with roasted garlic and horseradish. We skipped the gin and asked for vodka instead. The Bird on Bird with chicken broth, togarashi and a pickled quail egg was also up for consideration. The Grapefruit Collins with bitters was fine but a straightforward grapefruit and vodka was better. We discussed the Brunch Punch, an apparently powerful concoction, but nobody could explain what it actually was so we left it behind as it was only about 2:30 in the afternoon. Deviled eggs indeed had a bit of heat to them and were delightful. Served with squishy toasts made from breaded pork, they seemed a bizarre assemblage at first but ultimately did make sense. Picture a late-night dive into a Denny’s for a helping of sausage and eggs. The breakfeast is not to be taken lightly. This bad boy boasts a dry-aged rib eye that

weighs in at 36oz and in all fairness is meant for two. The Flintstones-worthy meat comes with four eggs, hollandaise sauce, toast and home fries—all for just a scaletipping $110. We chose a lighter course and instead traipsed through the Tuscan kale salad, which reminded us of Greek spanakopita, as it featured feta cheese, dill and slices of cool cucumber in liplicking lemon vinaigrette. We fled from The Fat Cat with fried eggs, cheddar and sausage, moved past the moules, electing instead the clever, amusing Belgian Hangover Pasta, which was more a twist on an Italian carbonara suited up for brunch. Vermont ham, Gruyère cheese and lots of black pepper mingled with sturdy coils of pasta and came together with the inclusion of an egg, sunny side up and suitable for dipping. A medium rare burger was also very satisfying with Gruyère and a topping of sliced red onions. The simple pickle that

came with it was divine and I loved the homemade mayo. The accompanying frites were stiff, however, and landed overly cooked and overly salted. While we questioned whether or not we should order dessert (we didn’t, although lemon poppy scones with sweet cream did seem like a good idea, and Southern biscuits with smoked maple butter did beckon, too), we feasted our eyes on the foot-

SHORT ORDER: A homey gastropub is housed in the odd block between NoMad and Kips Bay.

SAN FRAN MAN Austin Wilde in Golden Gate S.5: The Cover Up

By Manuel Hung & Rod Steely

Golden Gate S.5: The Cover up naked sword, nakedsword.com olden Gate’s fifth season uses San Francisco’s recent nudity ban as a backdrop for some activist-style man-sex.

ROD: I’ve seen the three nudists who walk around the Castro, and it’s no surprise to me that people there are complaining. If San Francisco’s naked protesters looked more like the guys in The Cover Up, nobody would be screaming “cover up!” MANUEL: Naked Sword has done a brilliant job of combining actual footage of protests with their own film to create a very believable montage of story and sex. Bravo to their post-production team! ROD: Caleb Colton arrests a naked Logan Stevens, telling him, “You’ve earned yourself a ride with Officer Dick— my dick! All you nudists are just sex freaks.” I love Stevens’ response: “In my

case, that just happens to be true.” Then these two go to a deserted warehouse and prove they’re both sex freaks. MANUEL: My favorite was the six-way in the iconic Nob Hill Theatre’s darkroom. The scene is supposed to belong to Tommy Defendi and Logan Vaughn, but I couldn’t take my eyes off my dream boyfriend, Leo Forte. ROD: Constituent JD Phoenix makes District Supervisor Cox (Dale Cooper) kneel and suck dick to prove he’s not afraid of penis. The way Cooper eats Phoenix’s booty, he’s not afraid of ass either! And don’t miss Christian Wilde learning how to bottom for the first time. MANUEL: Austin Wilde, looking unusually hung, takes Christian Wilde’s cherry in a wild blackmail flip-fuck. “You’ll be back,” Austin says afterwards. Indeed we will, Austin!

you say when you’re spotting someone at the gym and what you say when you’re fucking someone at the gym aren’t very different? “Yeah, don’t stop. Harder. C’mon, push.” That’s good news to porn stars who don’t like learning dialogue. ROD: When Ryan Rose presented his sweet ass for gym buddy Trenton Ducati to eat, I wanted to work out with them. Once they started flip-fucking, I wanted to work in with them! These are two of the most perfect men ever. MANUEL: Rose, whose “fuck face” is basically an Elvis sneer, is a better bottom.

Ducati is the rare model who tops as well as he bottoms, especially head-overheels on a decline bench. But it’s the bent-over dumbbell row that’s the favorite exercise at this gym. Little Angel just wants to work on his lats when tall JR Bronson gives him an unsolicited spot. Angel ends up working on his back. ROD: Angel Rock went to town on Donnie Dean’s ass (cheeks and hole) like it was his last meal. The rimming was great, but the fucking was even better! Then Jimmy Durano did one long squat on Mike Anders’ face, pausing only to let Anders catch his breath before going right back to his next squat. Falcon has turned ass-eating into an Olympic sport! MANUEL: Which is sure to piss off the Russians even more than a vodka boycott!
