A QUESTION FOR THE AGES IS AGE REALLY JUST A NUMBER WHEN IT COMES TO RELATIONSHIPS?

n online reports regarding newly out Olympic swimmer Tom Daley and his alleged relationship with Oscar-winning Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, a hefty chunk of comments seem to focus on their age difference—Daley is 19 and Black is 39. People seem really upset by it. But little—if anything—is said about the fact that we potentially have two fantastic role models paired together who, combined, can do more good things for our community. (Reminder: Black is one of the folks behind AFER, whose efforts successfully led to the Supreme Court striking down Prop. 8 last summer.) I personaly think that if Daley were 30, with a paunch belly and average looks, and Black were 50 and milquetoast, few would bat an eye or troll a comment thread about their age gap. Daley, however, is a seriously hot twink, and nothing gets a bitter, hateful queen in a jealous, venom-spewing twist like seeing someone accomplished—and aging gracefully to boot—succeed where they have failed. Is an “age discordant” relationship so shocking, though? Is a 10, 20, 30-year gap between partners “wrong” or “gross?” (Full disclosure: my partner is 11

Someone accomplished, settled, who already went through the hoops and bullshit of discovering themselves. Oh boy, did I badmouth a couple of those older men! Today, thanks to websites and apps, it’s even easier for younger/older men to connect. (SilverDaddies.com, anyone?) Sure, there will always be older predators seeking to exploit a naïve lad, but predators can also take the shape of someone “age-appropriate.” I know young guys who were trapped in abusive relationships or maliciously exposed to HIV by someone of their own age. There are good and bad people to be found at any age. Getting back to Daley, would he be better paired with a shrill, screeching 19year-old pretty-boy queen who wants to go to bars every night? Perhaps Daley decided against that option. Maybe age is more than just a number, and a wide gap is just right. N

AS FREQUENT READERS of Tom Fitzgerald and Lorenzo Marquez’s style and entertainment blog already know, the witty duo behindTomAndLorenzo.com have an incisive eye when it comes to celebrity fashion and pop culture style. From their (very) in-depth analyses of the fashion on Mad Men to calling out celebs for their lackluster red carpet looks, the Philly-based couple have a knack for spotting the little things that can make a big difference. WHEN Static Lounge (28-43 Steinway St, StaticLoungeNYC.com) in Astoria announced that it was re-opening as a gay bar, some wondered how exclusively gay the new place would actually be. The previously straight venue, which was recently bought by new partners, announced on its Facebook page that it would be a “new gay bar that’s not totally gay” and didn’t seem to be closing for that long in order to change sexual orientation. Well, it turns out that “not totally gay” actually means“still pretty darn gay.” “ThenewStaticLoungeisexclusivelygayseven nightsaweek,”explainsAndrewTsaousis, apartnerin thenewbar.“Thetaglinereferstoouruniqueteamof owners, both straight and gay, who believe that di-

versity is only an excuse for celebration!” The large, open space of Static Lounge features exposed brick, candles and atmospheric lighting, which lends itself to a laid-back, relaxing atmosphere. A bar runs across the main floor and there is also a small stage for performances and cabaret acts. In fact, with some Broadway producers now on the bar’s ownership team, another change that should be noticeable when the Steinway Sreet. venue re-opens this Friday is an increased focus on entertainment and live performances. “We wanted to offer a stage to showcase the talents of the very large community of performing artists residing in our neighborhood,” says Tsaousis. “Expect first class performances, talent

contests—with professional industry judges— guest performers from Broadway shows, celebrity appearances, prizes and giveaways, local filmmaker’s screenings, great DJs and lots of dancing!” At this weekend’s grand opening celebration, Tsaousis says you can expect drink specials, guest artists, a surprise celebrity appearance and DJ Adam Sikora laying down the beats. They’ll also be kicking off their Men of Astoria calendar contest, a search to find some of the hottest guys in the ‘hood. “We are, after all, the most ethnicallyrich community with the hottest guys from every corner of the globe waiting to be exposed and photographed,”says Tsaousis. Well, when you put it that way... —WP

Comment of the Week:

“Queer is gay with all the options.” —Gene Evangelist via Facebook on last week’s commentary examining the difference between gay and queer

BY SEBASTIAN SHARP

THE RAINBOW DISCONNECT WHAT DO LESBIANS REALLY THINK OF GAY MEN?

he relationship between gay men and lesbians has always been a complicated one. Though the two groups have often been lumped together due to a variety of factors over the years (struggle against homophobia, gay media, mutual love of Tegan and Sara), it sometimes seems that it’s a rather tenuous alliance. I know some gays who hang out exclusively with lesbians and others who have no lesbian friends at all. When it comes to the latter group, they can be downright hostile when they talk about our Sapphic sisters. But what do lesbians think of us gays? To find out, I chatted with a number of my lady-loving lady friends about the topic. If there were an overarching theme from our conversations, it was that many envy the options and the spirit of freedom that gay men in New York enjoy. But the gals also find that their interactions with gay men can be shallower than with straight acquaintances or other lesbians. “I wish I was a gay man!” said one woman I chatted with at a bar before she bought me a shot of tequila. “I was here last night and half these guys were making out with each other by 3am.” “I love gay men, especially in comparison to straight people. I think being a gay man in New York seems to be a fabulous bastion of sex and possibility and I am constantly so jealous,” added a friend of mine from Prospect Heights.“Gay men generally love me although sometimes I feel like they think they should prefer straight women.” Others mentioned similar, slightly awkward encounters they’ve had with gay men in the past. “Generally, whenever I meet a gay man, they love when they learn I'm a lesbian. But then the conversation goes to either saying that they have this one les-

Chartreuse COCKTAIL RECIPES FEATURING FIVE DELICIOUS LIQUEURS DESIGNED odka, gin, whiskey, rum and tequila are the essential components of every well-stocked bar. But they’re certainly not the end of the line where cocktails are concerned. Aperitifs and digestifs have long played a role in drinking culture, and these days, as an emphasis on sophistication and good taste sweeps the drinking world, they’re back in fashion. Here are five worth a try—complete with tasting notes and a sample cocktail.

inding great new cocktail recipes can be an arduous task—and many gays, in an effort to keep those gym-toned abs up to snuff, often wind up in the tasteless rut that is the vodka soda. But as tried and true as that low calorie combo may be, a sense of adventure is crucial to finding a delicious drink. So this year, we’re throwing the narrow “cocktail”restriction of our winter cocktail guide out the window and focusing on tasty adult beverages—whether they’re traditionally thought of as a“cocktail”or not—that you and your friends should try. Learn about aperitifs and the cocktails you can make with them on the opposite page. And find local beer and wine you can serve as replacements to the usual imported fare at your next dinner party on p.12. Cheers! N

SUPER POPULAR AMONGST restaurant industry people, Fernet-Branca (better known as simply Fernet) is a dark, bitter spirit with a strong licorice flavor that was actually invented in 1845 as a stomach medicine. Drink it straight, on the rocks or in a delicious cocktail.

MADE FROM A PROPRIETARY blend of 130 herbs and spices by Carthusian monks in the French Alps, Chartreuse comes in yellow and green varieties and has seen an enormous increase in popularity recently.

SAMPLE COCKTAIL:

CHAMPS-ÉLYSÉES COCKTAIL SAMPLE COCKTAIL:

POPULAR IN FRANCE, Pastis is often confused with its historical predecessor Absinthe, but the two are very different. (Absinthe is a liquor, Pastis a liqueur; absinthe is made with green anise, Pastis is made with star anise, etc.) It is generally served with five measures of water per one measure of liqueur.

THIS APPLE BRANDY from Lower Normandy— where apples grow better than grapes—is generally regarded as the world’s best; France has even given it the coveted AOC status, which puts it in a league with Cognac and Armagnac.

MORE TRADITIONAL THAN Lillet Blanc, this Swiss version of the French aperitif wine quinquina was originally used as a vehicle to deliver malaria medicine in the early 20th century and is typically served super cold, but without ice.

REMEMBERING CODIE

WEEK

SHOUT OUT

NEW YORK’S DOWNTOWN ICONS SAY GOODBYE TO THE LATE CODIE LEONE.

hen Codie Leone—a.k.a. Codie Ravioli—died of a heart attack on October 23, NewYork lost one of its downtown stars. The stylist and transgender advocate was a beloved fixture of the city’s club scene, and she’ll be remembered fondly by many nightlife luminaries at a special memorial event on December 15 at XL Nightclub. — JR

W

“Known to the world as Sister Codie Ravioli, she was a performer, It girl and hairstylist extraordinaire. And to me she was my sister. Our relationship went beyond blood; I am grateful for the gift of my sister’s love.” —Connie girl

“Big heart. Badass. Smart cookie. Diamond in the rough. That’s what Codie means to me.”—Patricia Field

“From the day I met her till the end Codie was always sweet, and kind, a true sister. They broke the mold and there will never be another. New York just won’t be the same without her.” —Jojo Americo

“Codie was a dynamo who was just as loveable and funny as she could be. Her work was terrific and I will be wearing the wigs she made me for a long time. She will be missed very much.”—Debbie Harry

“Codie came to New York, reinvented herself, then went on to live her life the way she wanted, becoming a legend along the way. And that is what New York is all about!”—Mao Padilha

“Codie was one of those special personalities that I came to New York to surround myself with. While she was one of the fiercest of the‘legendary children,’ it will be her warmth and humor that I will ultimately always remember. Those of us who knew her lost a friend but hopefully her influence will continue to inspire many more to come in the future.” —Roger Padilha

“Since she passed, several people have told me that Codie was the first person to welcome them to New York. She was lovely to look at but also a true sweetheart. People imagine most drag queens and transsexuals to be bitchy or diva-ish, but Codie was a perfect example of a sisterly queen who we all bonded with.” —Lady Bunny

BIANCA DEL RIO, THORGY THOR

hen Cherry Jubilee’s annual awards show honoring the best and brightest of New York’s gay nightlife scene takes over Providence on December 20, it’ll be one hell of a glitzy and—dare we say it—glammy night. The 15th annual event may bring the city’s party people together to toast their own, but competition for the coveted awards is sure to be fierce. With 22 categories—including two new “people’s choice” awards that anyone can vote on regardless of whether they work in nightlife—it’s anyone’s game. Still, hosts Bianca Del Rio, Thorgy Thor and Michael Musto have some opinions to share about who will likely win the Glam Awards’ top five categories—as chosen by Cherry Jubilee herself— and who should win. —JR

DIVAS LIVE

WEEK

DECEMBER 22

BRIEF ENCOUNTER

SHERRY VINE AND RAVEN O ON THIS YEAR’S BAR D’O REUNION.

Sherry Vine, Flotilla DeBarge, Joey Arias & the late Sade Pendavis; (inset) Raven O

hey’re back! Well, to be fair, Joey Arias, Raven O and Sherry Vine never really went anywhere. They’re all, of course, perennial fixtures of New York’s nightlife scene. But the trio of drag divas is reuniting for the ninth year running to celebrate their fabled cabaret act, Bar d’O. This year’s reunion show marks Raven O’s return to the fold as well as a return to the act’s roots at a venue that recalls the original Bar d’O. If all goes well at Acme on December 22, according to Sherry and Raven, it could also mean more frequent Bar d’O performances in the future. —JR

T

For those who never got the opportunity to see the original show, how would you describe Bar d’O? RAVEN: A place where highbrow and lowbrow came to get a taste of real live New York. A no-holds-barred place where [we] ruled and gave [our] heart and soul and talent to every motherfucker who walked through the doors—with a little bit of drugs, booze, sex and high doses of

attitude and amazing live singing. SHERRY: There really is nothing like it. Nowhere else could you see three live singing drag artists singing their asses off, comedy and glamour. It was packed every night with celebs, downtown denizens— and very sexy straight men! What is your fondest—or most scandalous—memory from doing the show? SHERRY: I don’t even know where to begin. Maybe dancing on the sofa, drunk, with Meg Ryan. Or maybe the two Argentinian soccer players I entertained before the show. Every night was it’s own story! RAVEN: Doing blow, blowing many cocks and then sucking ’em before going out to sing. Oh wait, that was Joey and Sherry! I guess reading many celebs and teaching the children how to be a real diva. How has Bar d’O influenced New York’s contemporary drag scene? RAVEN: Have you noticed how many

queens now sing live? Well, guess who started that? Bar d’O, bitches! Bar d’O was the beginning and the spark that started the new cabaret scene around the world. And if you didn’t know that, consider yourself schooled. SHERRY:I think it raised the bar, along with the other amazing nightlife of that era— Squeezebox, Jackie 60, Boy Bar. The queens were more interested in turning it out than being cunty or dressing up for free drinks. What keeps you coming back to do these reunions every year? SHERRY: Coin! No, of course it’s the chance to perform with the legendary Joey and Raven! People who don’t go out a lot come and go crazy. It’s one of the highlights of my entire year. RAVEN:I haven’t done it for a few years. I’ve been really busy with other projects. But there are five reasons why I do it: Joey,Sherry, Ivan, Jean Marc and our supporters.

Would you ever consider doing the show on a more regular basis again? SHERRY: I hope so. We’re doing it at Acme this year to see if it could work there as a monthly event. RAVEN: Fuck yes! I think once a month would be amazing. How are you going “back to your roots” with this year’s show? RAVEN: Doing classic songs and serving Raven O in full diva mode! No one is safe. SHERRY: I’m not shaving my upper lip. It’s the first time in several years that we have all three been together and the space is very much like the original Bar d’O. Maybe it’s too soon to even ask, but do you have any plans for next year’s 10th annual reunion? SHERRY: Not yet, but the wheels are turning. RAVEN: You’re right! It’s too soon to ask.

The Ninth Annual Bar d’O Reunion at Acme, 9 Great Jones St (@ Lafayette), Dec 22 at 10pm, 11pm and midnight; $20. Visit acmenyc.com for more info.

Kelly Clarkson

The Right Track Keep Christmas Coming!

MUSIC

NEXTMAGAZINE.COM

By Keo Nozari fter reviewing Kelly Clarkson’s beautiful Christmas album Wrapped in Red and Ariana Grande’s “Last Christmas” single a few weeks back, our Christmas stocking just keeps getting stuffed with so many holiday tunes, we realized we needed to deck the halls once again. Our spirits were lifted when we learned Ariana Grande wasn’t just releasing one single, but a single every week for four weeks! The tracks will comprise Christmas Kisses, an EP of four festive numbers. As of press time she’s released two more singles, including the uplifting ditty “Love is Everything” and beautiful soulful holiday ballad “Snow in California.” Speaking of holiday soul, the amazing Mary J. Blige throws down a yuletide all her own on A Mary Christmas. The dilemma for Blige is that while Christmas albums are usually pretty cheesy, the invocation of “Mary” on the songs isn’t so much clever as awkwardly self-referential (“Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, “Mary, Did You Know” etc.). As to be expected, Blige’s vocals are beautiful—but her surprising restraint makes us long for her to belt it out more. The album also has a surprising, shining duet with Barbra Streisand on “When You Wish Upon a Star.” Overall, we wish the arrangements here weren’t so traditional and staid, but it’s nice to hear Blige getting in the holiday spirit. In contrast, Tamar Braxton’s Winter Loversland does an unexpectedly good job at keeping a playlist of traditional holiday songs fresh while adding a more modern twist of R&B and jazz swing. It’s slinky and sparse at times, but very well exe-

cuted. Braxton’s vocals are beautifully delivered throughout and she slays her a cappella version of “Away In a Manger / Little Drummer Boy.” Plus, “The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late)” has never sounded so magical! The surprise success this week, however, has come from NBC’s The Sing-Off 2011 champions Pentatonix. The outstanding a cappella group’s Christmas album PTXmas (released on November 19) includes a traditional collection of songs that they’ve imaginatively recreated. Our favorites include “Carol of Bells” and an artfully arranged “Little Drummer Boy.” PTXmas was selling so well at press time it bumped Britney Spears’ Britney Jean out of the top spot of the iTunes Top Album chart within a single day of Spears’ release! That’s no small feat! They also topped another holiday winner: Kelly Clarkson’s Wrapped in Red (which was stationed at No. 3). N

2013YEARINREVIEW

By Jameson Fitzpatrick

2013 Book Review READING IS FUNDAMENTAL. DON’T MISS OUT ON THESE QUEER FAVORITES FROM THE PAST YEAR.

for Lost Children 10 Fairytales by Diriye Osman (Team Angelica Press) This debut collection of short fiction offers glimpses into the lives of LGBT Somalis across the globe, touching on issues of displacement, mental illness and familial homophobia—while celebrating the resilience of the queer spirit. RECOMMENDED FOR: fans of international literature and the just-out-of-the-closet.

Alex Dimitrov’s first book of poems is sexy, playful and romantic, proving that poetry can be hip and relevant without being droll or ironic. RECOMMENDED FOR: impressing an artsy, well-read crush.

A Memoir of My Father 9 Fairyland: by Alysia Abbott (W.W. Norton)

Just released in November, The New Yorker critic’s latest collection of essays is already one of the most lauded and talked about books of the year. Als’ incisive, multivalent readings of various cultural figures aren’t to be missed. RECOMMENDED FOR: the intellectual gentleman.

In this loving, graceful memoir, Abbott pays tribute to her late gay father, writer and activist Steve Abbott, and the world of 1980s San Francisco in which she grew up. RECOMMENDED FOR: California boys, to keep queer history alive.

American Honor Killings: 8 Desire and Rage Among Men by David McConnell (Akashic Books) Novelist David McConnell’s nonfiction debut is a chilling true crime collection detailing six hatedriven murders of gay American men in recent decades. RECOMMENDED FOR: guys with a scholarly interest in masculinity—and not for the faint of heart.

for It 4 Begging by Alex Dimitrov (Four Way Books)

Girls 3 White by Hilton Als (McSweeney’s)

Mundo Cruel: Stories by Luis Negrón, 2 trans. by Suzanne Jill Levine (Seven Stories Press) Puerto Rican writer Negrón’s first book of short stories captures moments of queer life in the Santurce neighborhood of San Juan with plenty of camp, grit and heart. A short and fast-paced read that’s hard to put down. RECOMMENDED FOR: a fun and authentic glimpse into San Juan’s gay periphery.

1980s and Other Essays 7 My by Wayne Koestenbaum (Farrar, Straus and Giroux) The cultural commentator lets loose writing on his passions and obsessions in his latest book of essays. Wild, tangential and whip-smart, Koestenbaum is in fine form here. RECOMMENDED FOR: nostalgic types, and those who like a smart spin on pop culture.

Among the Bloodpeople: Politics

BOOKS

6 and Flesh by Thomas Glave (Akashic Books)

Glave’s inter-genre examination of LGBT people in the Caribbean is as emotionally gripping as it is erudite. With lyric, beautifully crafted language, this book trains its critical eye on the intersection of race, sexuality and cultural legacy. RECOMMENDED FOR: queers interested in social justice.

Impossible Lives of Greta Wells 5 The by Andrew Sean Greer (Ecco/HarperCollins) In 1985, a course of electroshock treatment sends Greta Wells, still reeling from losing her brother to AIDS and her lover to another woman, back in time—twice—to 1918 and 1941. Out author Greer crafts a novel so compelling Madonna has now optioned the film rights. RECOMMENDED FOR: fans of complex, time-jumping fiction.

1 Very Recent History: An Entirely Factual Account of a Year (c. AD 2009) in a Large City by Choire Sicha (Harper) Choire Sicha’s rendering of a year in the lives of a group of gay friends, lovers and acquaintances in New York is a shining example of nonfiction polished to its very literary best. In prose that is clean, yet startlingly strange, Sicha has written a triumphant debut. RECOMMENDED FOR: millennials and the people who love (or love to hate) them.

DREAMS COME TRUE Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson in Saving Mr. Banks

Saving Mr. Banks Time Investment: 126 min. Return on Investment: 115 min. t first, Saving Mr. Banks, a new film about Walt Disney (Tom Hanks) and his struggle to get P.L. Travers (Emma Thompson) to approve his studio’s film version of her book Mary Poppins, seems like The Devil Wrote Poppins: a sharp comedy about a woman who devastates with quick-witted comments and a take no prisoners attitude. The flashbacks to Travers’ childhood with her father (Colin Farrell) as a young girl in Australia initially seem like an unwelcome distraction from Thompson’s scenes. But ultimately Banks resembles The Devil Wears Prada insomuch as it emulates and expands on one of that film’s better qualities: the humanizing of an unsympathetic lead. The movie, anchored by an absolutely terrific performance by Thompson, goes right to the heart of why Travers created the character and what transpired in her life to harden her into the woman who makes Poppins’ creative team so miserable. Banks’s script indulges in some sentimentality, but it’s earned and affecting, legitimized by the film’s very real moments of darkness. Farrell’s sweet, dreamy dad grapples with demons and alcohol, and Travers’ long suffering mother nearly drowns herself. Even Disney, brought to vivid, authentically charming life by Hanks, reveals the less sunny side of his dreams. The movie is an assured, gripping character study filled with terrific performances, including the underrated Farrell, Paul Giamatti and Bradley Whitford. It’s a Hollywood tale with humanity to spare. —Justin Lockwood

Inside Llewyn Davis Time Investment: 105 min. Return on Investment: 100 min. fter the runaway success of the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack—which not only went platinum eight times but won a Grammy for Album of the Year—the Coen Brothers owed it to American folk music to honor its true, non-commercial origins. That tribute is Inside Llewyn Davis (CBS Films), a beautiful portrait of the Greenwich Village folk scene of the ’50s and early ’60s. Using Dave Van Ronk’s memoir The Mayor of MacDougal Street for major guidance, the Coens’ film follows Llewyn (Oscar Issac), a nomadic folk musician, searching for his way after the death of his music partner in the days leading up to Bob

A

A MAN AND HIS CAT Oscar Issac in Inside Llewyn Davis

Dylan’s big break. Llewyn has an uncanny ability to piss off everyone he knows, surfing from couch to couch as he struggles to turn his passion for folk into a career. It’s no coincidence Llewyn sets off on an Odyssey-like journey considering the film’s major connections to O Brother (they also share music producer T-Bone Burnett). Except there is more of a message in this journey: The Coens want their audience to know why musicians were willing to lose everything for a chance to share an oral tradition with others who would understand their passion. Whether the legions of Mumford & Sons fans will respect the Coens’ history lesson is unclear. It helps that the film has a devilish sense of humor—their funniest since The Big Lebowski—and a dynamite ensemble led by the charismatic Isaac. —Benjamin Solomon

What’s It all about? Bacharach Reimagined By David Hurst ew Yorkers have the rare treat of seeing acting titans Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart performing in repertory as they essay Harold Pinter’s No Man’s Land and Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. Directed by Sean Mathias with a distinct eye on humor in these existentialist black comedies, both productions are a feast for the eye and ear if audiences pay attention and don’t have too many cocktails at dinner beforehand. Leave the drinking to the stars, which they do in abundance in Pinter’s No Man’s Land, a battle of wits between two aging British poets who spend an evening engaging in verbal and psychological jousting. Last seen in New York in 1994 at the Roundabout starring Christopher Plummer and Jason Robards, No Man’s Land is perhaps one of Pinter’s most diabolical plays in that the audience is never quite sure what’s going on between the down and out Spooner (McKellen) and the well-heeled Hirst (Stewart). But it matters not in these stars’ capable hands—just go with it. Similarly, their production of Beckett’s Godot, last seen in New York in Roundabout’s acclaimed 2009 production starring Nathan Lane and Bill Irwin as Estragon and Vladimir, respectively, puts the emphasis squarely on McKellen and Stewart’s undeniable chemistry as a “couple,” if you will, in Beckett’s dark meditation on the futility of life and the inevitability of death. This changes the tone of the play in surprising ways, but often to its detriment. And, though I preferred the current leads to Lane and Irwin, I did not approve as much of Shuler Hensley

N

and Billy Crudup playing Pozzo and Lucky as I did the brutal interpretations of John Goodman and John Glover in the same supporting roles in the 2009 production. Hensley seems too broad and Crudup too young and not menacing enough as these characters who help Estragon and Vladimir (and the audience) “pass the time” while awaiting “the end.” The fresh-faced cast of New York Theater Workshop’s latest offering keep intoning the lyrical phrase, “What’s it all about” in their new homage to Burt Bacharach and, after 20 or 30 minutes of entrapment, audiences are likely to wonder, too. The reason the Workshop programmed What’s It All About? Bacharach Reimagined is anyone’s guess, but there’s little doubt that its primary function is to serve as a showcase for its conceiver, musical director and handsome star, Kyle Riabko. Unfortunately, there’s little else to recommend this pretentious, self-indulgent revue that’s essentially a cabaret show on steroids. The problem with Riabko’s conceit of arranging some of Bacharach’s greatest songs in a 20-something style is that those songs are perfect the way they are and Riabko’s arrangements, which consist mainly of slowing down songs to excruciating tempos with soulful guitar strumming, don’t illuminate them in any meaningful way. The result is a show that doesn’t go anywhere emotionally or musically. There’s no rhyme or reason as to why songs were chosen or grouped together in medleys, but that hasn’t stopped director Steven Hoggett (who did the “movement” for NYTW’s Once) from choreographing every beat and moment with tics, footwork and gestures. In short, What’s It All About is exhausting in its generic banality and its youthful, attractive performers are “emoting” the songs instead of inhabiting them. But back to the very ambitious Riabko, who’s certainly a major talent and not easily dismissed, no matter how misguided this venture. Riabko sings like a dream, plays the guitar like a demon and looks like an Abercrombie & Fitch model. It’s not hard to imagine that if this show doesn’t make him a star, his next one will. N No Man’s Land and Waiting for Godot play through March 2 at the Cort (138 W 48th St, TwoPlaysInRep.com). What’s It All About? plays through January 5 at New York Theater Workshop (79 E Fourth St, NYTW.org).

By Peter Sherwood ver the years, I’ve come to believe that the mark of a really good meal can be registered as much by the discussion it enables at the table as it can by the food itself. And just so, as we feasted at Parker & Quinn, our foodie appetites were fueled by the earnest, honest fare we found there—and the wonderful conversation it fostered. The whole setup was immediately, wonderfully arresting and transporting—we may just as well have sidled up to a slightly suggestive situation via madam Belle Watling in Gone With the Wind, outfitted with burnished gold sprays of filigree on the stark, slate-colored wallpaper illumined by amber hobnail lamps that evoked gaslights from a century ago. But Parker & Quinn is quite new, even as it winks at hallowed halls from New York’s history. A reasonable dip into a glass of velvety Hirsch Ken-

tucky bourbon whiskey seemed prudent, if only to stave off the chill from the elements outside. A blood orange margarita wasn’t a bad idea either, crafted with Avion silver tequila, ginger beer and lime—and several rounds confirmed their excellence! Oysters encrusted with cornmeal were lightly fried and served with a perfect cocktail sauce that miraculously incorporated Hendrick’s gin. The tomato bisque with smoky bacon was utterly sublime, presented in a charming mini copper casserole that we coveted—and we discovered our soup benefitted from goat cheese and Parmesan for a full-bodied flavor. We tore through the tartare that was keenly paired with a fine lace of bright mustard, a sharp redonion bite and salty chopped cornichons. The eggplant dip with a drizzle of sweet honey, grilled pita bread and za’atar spiced crisps was most distracting. We took a delicate pause into some sheep’s milk

ricotta enlivened by a cautious usage of orange zest. A pale, crisp and tangy Caesar provided some roughage. Eggy, slight ribbons of peppery tagliatelle pasta with slowly simmered lamb devoid of any gaminess was somewhat salty, but we conquered it nonetheless. While we considered our mains, we wondered if we should indulge in a rotisserie chicken or delight in a duck leg fashioned as a hearty French cassoulet? The hefty pork chop won out, laden with tender apples and perhaps a bit too sweet—but we matched this up with a bowl of savory cheddarbacon grits and dug in just the same. The huge, 16 oz medium rare boneless rib eye was worthy of several commendations, resting in a lovely, shallow pool of rich juices. We found the buttery, roasted gems of Brussels sprouts that naturally would accommodate the meat to be entirely satisfactory. As we shook our heads

somewhat guiltily, gazing at the dessert menu, it was obvious the pumpkin mousse with gingered pecans and a dollop of whipped cream had to be next. A fluffy, light finish to our meal with unexpected reminiscences of so many holidays spent at home! N

nline Buddies, Manhunt’s parent company and the daddy of online hookup sites, recently announced a hookup of their own: the acquisition of Jack’d, one of the top location-based gay dating apps. The merger makes Online Buddies the largest company in the world to connect men seeking men. Jack’d, Manhunt and the Manhunt Daily blog receive a combined two million unique visits daily. I chatted with Jonathan Crutchley, cofounder and Chairman of Online Buddies’ Board about how this international deal came about. He explained that Manhunt started in 1987 with a phone chat service. Remember those? In 2001, they moved online and about four years ago—when they realized that Grindr wasn’t just a gimmick and was not going away—they got into the app biz. Yosuke Matsuda of Lucid Dreams, LLC, who created Jack’d, was working his full time job in Japan while also running his app. As it increased in popularity, Jack’d came to be too much for him. After

Oh to be a fly on the wall at a meeting of the Internet dating businesses that included the likes of eHarmony, Farmers Only, Christian Mingle, JDate and Manhunt. Jack’d gets one million unique views each day, half in North America and the other in such major demographics as China, Japan and Korea. Manhunt has users in almost every country in the world—half in English and almost half read in Spanish. One hookup and suddenly they’re exploring the world one dick at a time! Surprisingly, it’s not all about sex. There’s also Manhunt Cares, which is the company’s foundation for AIDS research where they give back to the community.
