“I did read more than the headline & I was still a curious mix of bored & appalled,” Clean Bandit’s Neil Amin-Smith wrote in response to Olly Murs ‘20%’ gay reveal.

Did Adam Lambert get dumped by his boyfriend for coming out as Kylie Minogue?

Carol may have been snubbed at the Golden Globes and Oscars this year, but it’s picked up one major accolade as experts voted it the best LGBT film ever made. The Cate Blanchett-starring lesbian drama topped a list of 30 films voted for by over 100 critics, and filmmakers.

Grindr founder Joel Simkhai has denied that the app is driving business away from gay bars. “Even before Grindr, I think, sometimes you wouldn’t go out,” Simkhai told Time Out Hong Kong. “But today if you go to any gay bar or club, you’ll see many people are using Grindr. I think our users are still socializing in bars and clubs very well.” They are just doing it on their phones.

Two divas for the price of one. Madonna performed in Australia for the first time in 23 years, and to reward her Down Under fans she gave them a present. During her show in Brisbane, Madge performed Aussie diva Kylie Minogue’s “Cant Get You Out of My Head.”

Adam Lambert made his

GROWING PAINS Jim Andralis’s solo album marks a sharp detour from his gay post-punk quartet The Isotoners

“ PHOTOS COURTESY OF ALLISON MICHAEL ORENSTEIN

My friends and I meet once a month and we each show up with a song we’ve written,” says Jim Andralis, best known for singing in New York’s gay post-punk quartet The Isotoners. “Around 2012, 2013, I found myself writing songs to help myself process losses that seemed to just keep coming.” The result is Your Dying Wish Come True, Andralis’s poignant, country-tinged debut solo album, out March 25. Over the course of ten stripped-down tracks, Andralis grapples with the gradual death of his pit-bull Niko, the sudden death of his childhood friend Anastasia, and the end of a toxic friendship. The album was named after a song that Andralis wrote for his friend Jim Bentley, a studio engineer in Bushwick who committed suicide in 2013. Needless to say the record is a far cry from the playfully anarchist tone of The Isotoners—whose discography includes cuts like “Leather Daddy” and “Manboobs”—though Andralis says sensitivity has always brewed beneath his humor. “What blossomed over time was the courage to not be funny all the time,” he says. Another influence was starting his own psychotherapy practice (he bartended at Phoenix, the gay East Village dive, to pay for graduate school), which opened Andralis up as a songwriter. “With both [psychotherapy and songwriting], there’s a serious commitment to turning toward the stuff we usually try to exile from ourselves,” he says. “I have an innate appreciation for the darker shit that I believe exists within us all… and I believe it can be what connects us. So I hope with both my therapy practice and my songwriting there’s connection, beauty, and compassion, even when there’s pain, and even when you’re being an asshole.” Andralis will celebrate the release of Your Dying Wish Come True with a performance at Joe’s Pub March 30. Despite the record’s heavy subject matter, he promises there will still be moments of humor and levity at the show. “People cry at my shows now, and that somehow weirdly validates whatever feeling was there when I wrote them in my room,” he says. “And then, you know, I give the children ‘Hit the Ground Fuckin’’ as an encore. It’s basically a joyful version of my life where I fuck everything and everyone from the cradle to the grave and beyond.” – Mitchell Kuga

BRIEF ENCOUNTER

STRANGER

THAN FICTION Mel England talks to us about his political mockumentary Ron & Laura Take Back America BY MITCHELL KUGA

A

midst the circus of the current election season, even a mockumentary as ridiculous as Ron and Laura Take Back America can seem oddly pedestrian. Mel England and Janice Markham co-wrote and star in the political send-up as Ron and Laura, a hapless suburban couple navigating a post-Obama landscape rife with illegals, gays, and Kombucha-swigging liberals. As England puts it: “The sort of rule during any scene was: what’s the worst possible thing that could go wrong?” We spoke to the actor and HIV/AIDS advocate about the film, which makes its New York premiere March 25 at Cinema Village. How are you? I’m literally on a freeway right now, nothing more Los Angeles than that. But don’t worry—I’m not driving.

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF RONANDLAURATAKEBACKAMERICA.COM

Your mockumentary, Ron and Laura Take Back America, made its festival premiere in 2014, before the fever pitch of the current election season. Did you ever imagine things would be this crazy? To be honest I don’t think Janice and I expected that at all. We actually started shooting this movie seven years ago, right after Obama got elected. I got worried that by the time we were finished with the movie these types of fanatical people would go away, but it’s just been the opposite. Truths became stranger than fiction. You would never wish for this craziness, but for the film it’s almost like the perfect fertile ground for us.

The movie tackles a lot of hot button issues, from Obamacare to gay rights and immigration reform. Was there a particular event that inspired the movie? The Whole Fruits story was based on an actual story with Whole Foods; Janice had called me after the CEO [John Mackey] called Obamacare fascist and liberals who shopped at Whole Foods decided to boycott. This made it onto Fox News so conservatives around the country started shopping at Whole Foods to protest Obamacare. It was just a funny concept, because you

usually think of health food stores as very liberal, granola-type spaces.

That was one thing I found so interesting about the film; while it obviously mocks the conservative right it also takes aim at the holistic obsessed left. Was that your intention going into the project? That was a big part of the conversation that Janice Markham and I had. On the outside most people will think we’re just making fun of right wing, tea party type, but the yoga lady is really a capitalist. The professor of psychology ends up having just as much of an anger problem as Ron. We had to figure out a way to make it funny and still somehow find a way to like Ron and Laura.

I imagine it must’ve been hard to keep a straight face while playing Ron. There were many times we had to edit because I cracked up. But for me the hardest part was Ron has his anger management problem and I would often feel bad after shooting, like everyone’s going to hate me, I’m awful. I would scream at people and apologize.

Have you been surprised by any of the responses to the film so far? I had one friend in particular who was in tears by the end because the storyline with Brian [Ron and Laura’s MARCH 23, 2016 17

Whenever things get too heavy there’s flamboyant fashion designer Bob Zackie (Jim J. Bullock) to the rescue, providing campy gay interludes. What inspired his storyline? We just thought it was really funny. Of course there’s the very real Bob Mackie, but it was sort of a fictional character. The CEO of Whole Fruits became John Zackie, and Laura mistakenly thinks his name is Bob Zackie, who happens to be a celebrity designer. So there’s all this confusion in the film about who’s who.

Not to open a can of worms but what did you make of Hillary Clinton’s recent remarks about Nancy Reagan starting a national conversation on AIDS? She obviously misspoke and it was very upsetting for those of us who’ve lived through that era and lost people. I literally lost count; I lost many dear friends and I almost died in 1997, right before the cocktail came out. It was a real blunder. And I actually think she showed everybody what a politician should do and she apologized. And I totally accept her apology and I know a lot of friends in the HIV/AIDS community feel the same way. I don’t know why she would misspeak that way except that I think she was at [Reagan’s] funeral, and the thing you do at people’s funeral is say nice things about people. The irony of the whole thing is Nancy Reagan did end up starting a national conversation on AIDS—it was just about thirty years later.

In what ways is your own story embedded into the film? I grew up in Texas to hippie parents in the conservative Bible Belt south. My first job was at a health food store. There were all these crazy people on the other side and a lot of those people were family. So the movie really became the exploration of the American family that was divided amongst itself by rhetoric, and yet we’re all still connected and we all still love each other. Well, how are we going to get along? That’s the question we’re asking. N

son] so mirrored his experience as a gay man trying to gain the acceptance of his parents. I don’t think Janice and I expected that people could see it and have such a visceral connection because we were just trying to make a funny film. But at its core this mockumentary has a very serious political underbelly, like when the Muslim America woman has to look in the camera and express how she feels about bigotry. Or when Ron and Laura take part in a political event where people are saying bigoted things about gay people when their son is gay. It’s all of that confusion that we’re in the middle of.

LANCE BASS

SPEAKS OUT BY JAMEER BAPTISTE PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF TED SUN

20 MARCH 23, 2016

W

hen we had the chance to ask the former NSYNC band member, Lance Bass, any questions we wanted, we asked them all. From how’s married life treating him to trending topics in news and a few other questions in between. And just like on the Meredith Show, the blond bombshell held nothing back and spilled the tea. How’s your marriage going? We got married a little over a year ago on December 20 and of course we thought our honeymoon stage would be great. We thought that we would get to travel and enjoy the first year of marriage. But all of a sudden, we had to move to New York for one year so that kind of ruined our chances of going on vacations but it’s still been nice. We’ve been keeping warm here in NYC and working a lot. However, we are excited to get back home to Los Angles next month.

Do you two live in LA and New York? We don’t have a residence in New York anymore. Our prime residence is in Los Angles. But we’ve been here in New York since August doing a nine-month stint for the Meredith Vieira Talk Show.

Do you see any babies in the future? Yea, I think both of us are very family oriented and always had that dream of having children. And once the honeymoon phase starts going away, we are definitely going to look into having kids. For one, my husband Michael is going to be an amazing dad so I think having that experience of raising an outstanding kid is going to be a great challenge.

What are signs that the honeymoon stage is dying down? Once you stop celebrating that amazing night of your wedding and you kind of start coming down from that high, I think the next logical step to the relationship is looking at a family and being able to share the love that we have to give.

What does a family with you and Michael look like? I just want to have healthy children of course, be it a son or daughter. I see us definitely having two or three kids that’s like the perfect picture in our heads right now but that can certainly change very easily in the next couple years. We also love the idea of adopting so one day in our lives having a kid from an orphanage will be a big thing for us.

What are you doing for the Meredith Vieira Talk Show? I’m part of her Hot Topics panel everyday. We talk about whatever is happening in the news whether it’s

pop culture or politics. It’s basically a bunch of friends sitting around the coffee table in the morning drinking coffee and dishing the sh*t that everyone is talking about while trying to pretend you’re the experts.

What’s the latest dish on the tip of everyone’s tongue at the moment? The ‘it person’ of the hour of course is Donald Trump. You can’t do a show without Donald Trump coming up and of course it’s not for any positive reasons. It’s always for negative reasons. He’s the gift that just keeps on giving. Everybody loves the hot mess.

How do you feel about Adidas publicly supporting the LGBT community? I think it’s great! When a corporation makes a stand like that and contractually supports and protects any LGBT person, that’s huge. We’re not going to see athletes coming out tomorrow and making this big reveal but nonetheless this is really big for future athletes. A lot of gay athletes opt out of starting their careers because of discrimination. Teenagers out there right now that are just absolutely amazing at sports and know that this is what they want to do and just so happen to be LGBT, this will help them make the decision about their future.

Last question, what is one question that you wish us journalists would ask you that you rarely ever get asked? I love that question! My favorite question to be asked is what charities do I love working with because so many don’t get enough attention out there. One of my favorite ones is the Trevor Project. It saved so many children lives out there that have nobody to talk to. It’s a hotline I wish more people knew about because I think it could save more peoples lives. So any chance I get, I love to give them a shout out. Mingle with Lance Bass and his former Sirius XM Dirty Pop Crew before they start their new televised game shows. Cruise Planners, All Out Vacations has planned a weeklong voyage on the Royal Caribbean cruise ship complete with musical acts, special nightly parties and shore excursions all hosted by Lance Bass and his Dirty Pop family. The cruise departs from Fort Lauderdale on April 10. Availability is limited so book today at dirtypopatsea.com. MARCH 23, 2016 21

AME RIC AN PSY CHO THE MUSICAL

24 MARCH 23, 2016

Patrick Bateman is still here. 25 years after Bret Easton Ellis’s novelBYhitALEXANDER bookshelves,KACALA American Psycho prepares to make its Broadway debut – as a musical. After a successful run at London’S Almeida Theatre, the gory musical will begin previews on March 24 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. Benjamin Walker WILL portray wealthy young investment banker Patrick Bateman. We had the opportunity to chat with Ellis about his work, whose infamous anti-hero still holds an important place in pop culture – especially after Christian Bale’s portrayal in the 2000 film adaptation. From the corporate blanding of gay culture to why Psycho was initially deemed not commercially viable, Ellis opened up on ALL things Psycho and all topics gay.

ON THE COVER Alexander Kacala: In 1991, did you ever imagine American Psycho becoming a musical? Bret Easton Ellis: No, and I don’t think anyone else did either. I think if we had seen that far ahead in ’91 the contracts would have been much different. Patrick Bateman has become this ubiquitous figure in pop culture. In ‘91, no one wanted to option the book. There was one person. No one thought it had any commercial potential. So we were basically for about three years dealing with one production-company who was very interested because no one else was. They kept trying to find writers for the movie. At that point, not until the movie came out and even afterwards, because the movie wasn’t like huge. It wasn’t like a blockbuster. It did OK. But no one really knew that the book or that character was going to end up becoming a part of the pop culture consciousness. And certainly, not a musical. AK: When I hear you saying is that the film became a cult favorite and became popular after its initial release.

BEE: Pretty much. I think that two things happened. I think the movie streamlined the book for mainstream audiences and then made the book more popular. More people went to the book. Not that the book wasn’t doing OK. I think a lot of people see the movie and then buy the book. I think a lot of people see the movie and don’t even know that there is a book. I mean the book has been around for so long. I have definitely run into young people where I am introduced as the writer of American Psycho and they say, “Oh. I love that movie!” And the person introducing us clarifies, “No. He is the writer of the book.” And they respond, “Oh. There is a book?” That’s just what you have to deal with when a novel you have written is still out and around after 25 years. AK: Why do you think it wasn’t classified as commercially viable in 1991? Continued on next page. Benjamin Walker as Patrick Bateman

MARCH 23, 2016 25

BEE: I think it’s because it was non-narrative. It was very violent and pornographic and it really came from a literary place. It didn’t come from a place where I thought to myself, “This should be a movie.” I was really writing this in the interior headspace of a character and I was really thinking about style, stream of consciousness. I was thinking of pages and pages of lists. As I said in a Town and Country piece that I published, it really is Patrick Bateman’s selfies. The entire book are the selfies of his Instagram account; every piece of clothing, all of the food he eats, everything that he wants to exhibit. I think that when people saw the book they just saw it go on and on. That there was no story and it’s just this yuppie moving around Manhattan for hundreds of pages. Where is the girl? Where is the detective? Why isn’t he captured in the end? The book came out the same year as the move Silence of the Lambs. There was a lot of discussion in culture about violence. Is it good? Is it bad? Does it promote more violence? Silence of the Lambs gets away with some pretty gruesome stuff but there is a kind of idea of order restored. Buffalo Bill is killed. The girl is set free. There is some sort of order laid down. American Psycho doesn’t have that. This guy is still on the loose. The book is very ambiguous. There is a highly unreliable narrator and it just doesn’t lend itself to film. I think all of those reasons are why it wasn’t considered filmable back then. But I don’t know why he is still around. I don’t know why Patrick Bateman is still here. AK: Do you think Christian Bale, giving it this embodiment, helped people? BEE: Of course. You are completely correct. Yes. Christian Bale helped people put a face to Patrick Bateman and his performance definitely gave the book a new life. Where people could grasp onto something. So if they picked up the book after seeing the movie they 26 MARCH 23, 2016

could read the book with Bale in mind. I bet that made the book a lot easier for people who get stuck in it. Who aren’t able to move through it with as much ease as others because of the lists. Because of how “boring” it is at times. AK: What do you think are some of the challenges Benjamin Walker has to face playing a character so strongly associated with Christian Bale? BEE: Yeah. But what I think they are doing with the show is very different from what they are doing with the film. A theatrical experience is much different than a cinematic experience. I think because of what Benjamin Walker has to do on stage, he has to give a very different performance. You can’t do the subtle and confused stuff that Bale was doing in the movie. You have to create a new Bateman because you are in a completely different venue. I think part of what they are doing in American Psycho on stage is a different approach. Patrick Bateman starts off as a king in a way and then as the musical begins its dissent he begins to crack up more and more wildly. Where there was a strange subtlety to Bale’s performance, it was very, very cinematic. It was in his tiny vocal inflictions. It was much truer to the Bateman of the book. It’s going to have to be very different in what I hate to say is this “big Broadway musical.” AK: Were your struggles with sexual identity part of writing American Psycho? Well you know that’s interesting. I was having a conversation with a group of guys, and one of them asked, “Why don’t you write about being gay?” I thought, “Well I kind of have in a way.” And then someone else said, “What are you talking about? American Psycho is the gayest novel ever written.” When I was writing, Patrick Bateman was the definition to me of this new male dandy that had appeared in culture. That started somewhere in the mid-80s. Where

ON THE COVER straight dudes were appropriating gay male culture and Patrick Bateman became the personification of that. So in that respect I guess I was thinking about gay culture at that time. So look. I grew up in a bubble. I never had a struggle with my sexuality. I never had an anguished coming out moment. I realized society was wrong about its attitudes toward homosexBret uality but I just decided to Easton move through it on my own. Ellis It wasn’t that big of a deal with me. We were lucky in a way because even though you know society at a certain point is against you, you can pass. You aren’t black. You can pass. You can move around with it as much as you wanted to. If I go over here, they aren’t going to like it so I’m not going to go there. I am going to go over here where it is more acceptable. I found a way to navigate through it.

American Psycho was an investigation of what was going on with straight male society appropriating gay male culture. To me my sexuality was always there– I just never had an interest to write a novel about, “Oh, I’m so upset about society not accepting me.” Of course those stores are out there and I am not denying that experience at all. I just had a weird rare experience. AK: I remember you spoke about a “gentrification of gayness” during your interview with Passion Pit singer Michael Angelakos when he came out. How the gay male has been so accepted by society that

we as a community have lost our queerness or uniqueness. Can you expand upon that because I think it’s really interesting? BEE: I think it’s in all places of culture. The corporate culture blanding everyone out is a crime. I think group think ideology is a crime. I think that this idea of inclusivity for everybody is a crime. I really am a believer in individuality. In being your individual self and not going with the group and that means resisting inclusivity. That means being on your own and being true to yourself. Your messy, contradictory fucked up self. Not blanding yourself out to follow the status quo. I have always felt that way. I have always felt that rebels are interesting. Outsiders are more interesting than insiders. I feel that way about gay culture. Now of course equality is vital and marriage equality has to happen. But I do miss what we sacrificed. We are no long “the other” in a way. We are part of a bland corporate culture that for the most part completely accepts us and something is missing. There is a gay individuality that I found very exciting. There is a resistance with us that caused very interesting art to be made, that caused really interesting dialogue, novels, and an attitude. Now I see that gay people are allowed to get married and be as boring as everyone else. Great on one level, but let’s realize that something is lost with that. I miss the gay art that was created post World War II, whether it was Gore Vidal, Truman Capote. Robert Mapplethorpe, James Baldwin, whoever it is. That is gone and it’s not coming back. If you think Tyler Oakley is going to be our savior, great.

I really am a believer in individuality. In being your individual self and not going with the group and that means resisting inclusivity. That means being on your own and being true to yourself. Your messy, contradictory f*cked up self. MARCH 23, 2016 27

TRAVEL:

FOUR APPS YOU NEED TO DOWNLOAD NOW Make your journey much more enjoyable – and affordable. BY ALEXANDER KACALA

MARCH 23, 2016 29

TRAVEL

B

efore venturing up in the sky, download these four travel apps to make your journey much more enjoyable and affordable. 1. MisterBnB

After a slightly uncomfortable and homophobic experience, Matthieu Jost decided there was a need for a short-term rental service by and for gay men. So misterbnb was born. Connecting the global gay community, misterbnb was named the “gay Airbnb” by Forbes. The site serves as a catalyst for the gay community to connect in real life, becoming a response for the strong demand for collaborative tourism in the booming industry of LGBT travel. Gay couple and bloggers ‘Two Bad Tourists’ love the site that also has a well-designed mobile app available for download. On their informative blog, they write, “Understanding a city’s gay scene is much more easily done with the help of a local and apartment sharing is one of the best ways to meet someone living in the city who knows the best insider advice. misterbnb has become the #1 gay hotelier in the world with more than 30,000 hosts in over 130 countries.”

2. Hopper Hopper is the award-winning mobile app that doesn’t just let you book flights from your phone: it also tells you when is the best time to buy. Hopper has been named one of the best apps of 2015 by Apple, Buzzfeed, Vogue, Tech Insider, New York Times, and TIME. Booking with Hopper is quick, easy, and secure. With Hopper, the idea is that you can monitor a particular route continuously using its “Watch a Trip” feature, which gives you a better chance at catching a better fare. When the fare drops, Hopper alerts you with a push notification, which can also inform you if the price isn’t likely to fall further. It can notify you if fares are about to increase, too. Giving you an opportunity to book that flight to Dubai before it gets too steep. For the service that can end up saving you a bundle on a ticket, Hopper just charges $5 per booking. Totally worth it. The design is sleek, sophisticated and user friendly – making this app a must. 30 MARCH 23, 2016

3. Scruff Ok. So maybe it’s not solely a travel app. But since they added their new Venture feature, Scruff has totally changed the game when it comes to gay travel. “The biggest new feature of Scruff 5 is Scruff Venture,” Scruff founder Johnny Skandros told us late last year. “We’ve known for some time that our members use Scruff to get advice on where to go and what to do while traveling. Scruff Venture reinvents gay travel by making it easier than ever to connect with locals and fellow travelers in destinations around the world. In addition to viewing who is local to and who is (or will be) visiting a given city, you’ll also be able to see what events are coming up (and who’ll be there), as well as Airbnb and VRBO room listings by other Scruff members.” Scruff also struck a partnership with ILGA – International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association – the world federation of national and local organizations dedicated to achieving equal rights for LGBTI people. With their support and resources, Scruff implemented a new Travel Alert feature for members who visit countries where same-sex acts are criminalized, notifying of them of these laws when they sign on to get off.

4. HotelTonight Missed your flight and need to stay an extra night? Or stressed at work and need to take a staycation? Hotel Tonight offers you last-minute discounts for rooms that hotels would not otherwise be able to fill - well, um, tonight. Or tomorrow, but that prior planning will cost you. Hotel Tonight allows for spontaneity, but you can also find rooms in a variety of hotels – from basic to bougie – for reasonable rates. It also makes it easy to cope with the unexpected, such as flight cancelations, or missing the last ferry to Fire Island. Not that that’s ever happened of course. The app is also really trying to court us gays, popping up every time I try to sign-in to Grindr. Makes sense. There is no better way to ‘host’ than at a ritzy hotel with clean sheets and a cleaner bathroom. N

MUST-HAVE

GYM ESSENTIALS Six Accessories You Can’t Workout Without

BY DAN WELDEN

T

here is no better time to accessorize than at the gym. Here are some of my favorite essentials to fill your gym bunny’s basket.

1. LIFTING SHOES When it comes to shoes, there is a major difference between lifting and running. Both are designed to enhance your performance, but both are designed completely different. Lifting shoes normally have a slightly elevated heal with less cushion. This has to do with proper form and energy transfer. The elevated heal helps with your form while limited cushion gives you a more stable footing allowing you to exert power into the lift rather than stabilizing yourself.

NIKE ROMALEOS 2 VOLT WEIGHTLIFTING SHOES roguefitness.com - $169.00

2. COMFORTABLE UNDERWEAR Although going commando is hot in certain scenarios, the gym is not the place. People of all genders, ages and sexual orientations go to the gym. It should be a comfortable place for everyone to attend and pursue a healthy lifestyle. So keep your dragon in its cage with this pair of (BRAND) boxer briefs.

UNDER ARMOUR HEATGEAR 6’’ BOXERJOCK

FITNESS 3. RUNNER SHOES Runner shoes usually focus more on arch support, provide extra cushion in the sole and are more flexible. They are often lightweight and more mainstream than lifting shoes.

MEN’S SAUCONY GUIDE 9 roadrunnersports.com - $119.95

4. SOCKS In general, I prefer low-cut or no-show socks. I don’t like sock lines and only some people can pull off high socks at the gym. I’m definitely not one of those people, and I’m good with that. Regardless, you’ll want comfortable socks and not ones that are bunching in your shoe or ones that you have to keep pulling up.

CLIMACOOL 2.0 NO-SHOW SOCKS adidas.com - $12.00

5. SHAKER You want to keep your water bottle and shaker bottle separate. From experience, water bottles do not mix proteins powders well, and who likes the taste of supplement residue in their water bottle? You also need something that is leak proof for both shakers and water bottles. The MixFit Shaker Bottle’s unique rounded-bottom is engineered for easier mixing and cleaning.

MIXFIT SHAKER BOTTLE bodybuilding.com - $9.99

6. GYM BAG Gym bags or backpacks are great for carrying all your gym supplies. I have had the best luck with Under Armour gym bags. They last a long time and many are water resistant.
