It was announced that Barbra Streisand’s latest North American tour would begin on August 2 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and continue through August 23 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. The tour will come to Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where the 74-year-old singer was one of the arena’s opening attractions in October 2012. She will also release a new album, “Encore: Movie Partners Sing Broadway,” pairing Streisand with film actors and singers, scheduled for release before the end of the year. Blow my head off,” Anohni wallows, ”explode my crystal guts.” It’s the second single and album-opener, “Drone Bomb Me,” from her latest solo project titled Hopelessness. Indeed. In the song—composed with Ross Birchard, who under moniker Hudson Mohawke has Kanye and Tiga productions afoot this year—Anohni imagines herself an Afghani girl longing for an unmanned bomb to fall on her. Even more transgressive, in the video Anohni imagines herself as Naomi Campbell imagining herself as an Afghani girl looking to explode. If the political is personal, then the battlefield will always be the body. And the body is precisely what’s wrong with this collection. From start to finish, plucky synth lines and sharp beats propel one towards the dance floor, but then phrases like “North Koreans,” “child molesters” and “Guantanamo” let the air out of one’s Reebok Pumps. I’ve never been more envious of non-native speakers of English than when listening to Hopelessness. They at least have a fighting chance of kicking out the jams to tracks like “Execution.” With its insistent doorbell chime paired with throbbing bassline, “Evecution never realizes the “American dream” Anohni is so jauntily memorializing is actually state-sponsored capital punishment of the individual and mass genocidal variety. To employ that American Bandstand saw, this record is a good beat-down, but you can dance to it.

frenetic head drained of color hovering above the inverse of hope—seems like a rebuke to Shepard Fairey’s iconic, 2008 campaign poster wherein our 44th President’s head is banked, same angle, staring into the middle distance void. It’s an interesting image eight years on and, indeed, all Anohni sees of that stencil’s vibrant reds and blues is the color of jaundiced muck. Citing Snowden, the NSA and, natch, drones, Anohni asks Obama, “Do you recognize the yellow staring back at you?” “How did I become the mother of this son?” Anohni asks on the title track “Hopelessness.” And it’s where one would look for answers: how do we reverse the irreparable damage to our planet and our own bodies? I’ve received lengthy email blasts from Anohni laying out solutions to these very topics, but none of that faith is on display here. “I don’t give a sh*t what happens to you,” Anohni sings over Oneohtrix’s simple string plot that eventually disintegrates like the rest, “now we blew it all away.” I’ve been on-board with Anohni’s two-decades long main artery—Antony and the Johnsons—since Kevin Aviance barged into my office at this very magazine in 2001 waving a tape overhead, imploring, “This is everything!” And he was absolutely right. But while that vision was always dark, there was hope, something Hopelessness, despite its infectious dance tracks and almost universal acclaim, lacks. And that feels fatal. I fell in love with a dead boy, the EP title Aviance was waving overhead, but also a general statement of Johnsons’ torch-holding. But even that hero, cradling a dead lover, was able to “throw a bottle out to sea” and “whisper the secret in the ground.” There was action, no matter how ineffectual. A cure, no matter how much despair. On Hopelessness, Anohni reads The New York Times aloud on the dancefloor and the only remedy on offer is to buckle up for the apocalypse. WHAT’SHAPPENING INBOYSTOWN Writer Jake Biondi is at it again! The Chicagoan is set to release the fifth edition of his book series, Boystown.

he soap opera book is a captivating drama set in the gay heart of Chicago, Boystown. Everywhere depicted in the book are real life places and landmarks you would witness in the Chicago gayborhood. Even the situations, although embellished, are realistic occurrences that any given reader could relate to -- or at the least be glued to. Biondi, a native Chicagoan who grew up in a suburban town right outside of the city, first dreamed up the book idea from his love for television dramas. He just could never get enough of them. They always seem to provide him with the anticipation and excitement he graved. But there was just one thing lacking and he had the desire to add his take to it. “I’ve always been a fan of TV dramas,” Biondi explained. “And I’ve always wanted to create one with all that excitement but with a gay focus.”

And that is just what the English major did in his first Boystown Book in 2013. As a lifelong proud Chicagoan and gay man, Biondi relocated to the enticing Chicago gayborhood over 20 years ago. So when it came time for him to fulfill his desire, his surroundings made for the perfect setting. At first, Biondi wrote the book for himself. But it quickly gained in popularity and before the bewildered writer knew it, fans were asking for more. In the past three years Biondi, who describes the book as a cross between Queer as Folk and Revenge, has written five books in the series with the fifth book set to be released June 1. “It’s exciting that they keep asking for more,” the enthusiastic author commented. “It’s a very good type of stress.” Boystown is Biondi’s only published book. However, the sensational series does keep the writer busy with juicey plot twist and turns of main characters from the age of 19 to 45 encountering each other in peculiar and life-changing ways. Not to mention, the sensual and vivid sex scenes that line the pages of the book. Whether it’s a hot gay guy being nefarious, a straight couple thrown into the mix, a lesbian fighting for equality or a dreamy Asian appearing on the page, Biondi makes sure the characters are diverse in orientation and ethnicities - - practically every way possible. The conscious writer has been known to incorporate current issues and situations going so far as to do his due diligence and investigate situations so his written accounts are realistic, accurate and respectful. He is currently working to add some mentions of the current trans issues in his future books. He also likes to include real characters in his book when appropriate -- cameos made by approved artist, celebrities and public figures. It’s all just a dramatized version of real life. “I feel like there are bits and pieces of myself and my friends in some of the characters,” offered up Biondi. “I think that is true of any author, but there is no one-to-one correlation of a real person to any character.” Biondi encourages his readers to reach out to him with their commits and suggestions. He actually made a promise to himself to answer every readers who has reached out to him. Currently, he is working with Hollywood producers to bring the book series to life on the television screen. My audience wants to hear about Cher, Anderson Cooper that stuff. I can tell you about this amazing run-in I just had with Sean Penn. I also just saw Barbra Streisand recently, that’s always incredible. I can talk about an amazing run-in with Leonardo DiCaprio. But you know, I have to tell these Trump stories because they are fucking jaw-droppers! When you’re a fifty-five year old female standup comic with no network support, no studio support, let me tell you, the cheese stands alone. I have been fighting sexism and ageism in particular, in stand up, that I just don’t give a fu*k. Even though he’s the Republican front runner, I will be telling these Donald Trump stories that I’ve been keeping in the coffer because

Everyone knows he’s fucking nuts and that was that. Since there is so much in the world to talk about now, how do you decide what to deliver to the audience? Believe it or now, I’m actually thoughtful about what I choose to put into the act and what I don’t. I change it every night and I change it every city. We always start with local material, that’s what makes it fun. But this Donald Trump material, nobody’s got anything on me. No one has these Donald Trump stories. Maybe Melania. God knows how else she gets through the night, if you know what I’m saying. I have a story about spending a day with The Donald and Liza Minnelli at his golf course in Connecticut. It’s unreal. In addition to that, we will be discussing the news of the day, the stories of the day, the political landscape, the pop culture landscape, it’s all changing so fast. I think I started the tour with forty cities and now it’s eighty. Everything is really so cyclical in this world now, because Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was part of the political landscape as the Governor of California, is now the host of the new Celebrity Apprentice. Ok, let me tell you something. Don’t even start me on that my friend. People are cavalier about recalls, but I lived through that. I saw my poor Gray Davis, who was railroaded. If you ever see the Enron documentary, The Smartest Guy in the Room, they really lay out how Ken Lay and all those crooks really helped unseat Gray Davis and had a recall. Now being a California resident, even though I am a Chicago girl, hearing

people say, “You know what would be cool? if we had the Governator man!” Then we were stuck with that moron for eight years. Now we have a drought that was never addressed, and we are in debt. It’s not so cool to have a celebrity act like they know how to run anything. I think that Schwarzenegger should just go away; he should go away from television. And in terms of sexism, I am a fifty-five year old female. It’s like, “Boston Globe here Kris, and how do you really feel about Blac Chyna’? Howard Stern likes to tease me. eth Fornea is everywhere these days – including our Instagram feeds. The hunky Ginger is followed by 160,000 gawkers on the social app and we are one of his dedicated followers. From party pics to selfies in bed, his feed is constantly delivering big muscles, lots of scruff, and that delicious ass he shakes at events all over the world. We caught up with Fornea as he prepared for a jam-packed summer on his weekly party at G lounge, how he meets men, and what turns him on. Tell us about your party at G Lounge and how that’s been going. We started a weekly party at G lounge called House. The party is super cute and from 9 pm to 2 am. We have DJs who play happy house, tribal house, circuit house and/or pop house. The vibe is fun, flirty, fancy, and high energy. Each week, it’s filled with variety of Uber cute fellas from all parts of NYC. I would highly recommend checking it out. House is every Thursday at G Lounge, no cover, GoGo dancers, and $5 well vodka drinks. Bottle service is available. Any other events you’re preparing for? Most of my work happens on the weekend. I fly every weekend for parties until after July 4th week. Sorta living life one airport at a time. I’m in Memphis, Chicago, San Juan Puerto Rico, Orlando, Puerto Vallarta Mexico, Sonoma, and Provincetown just to name a few. If I had to pick one to chat about, it would be a weekend I am organizing in Puerto Vallarta Mexico. Jared and I are hosting “Hot Summer Weekend” at the Casa Cupula Gay Boutique Resort June 10-13. I did not see the article but no matter what the NY Times says I think that’s open for debate and opinion. I prefer naturally smooth or pleasantly hairy. The absolutely worst is rubbing up against someone and feeling like sand paper from prickly shaved hair. I think on some guys’ body hair that’s trimmed to a length that leaves it noticeable but still soft is perfect. I don’t think anyone should take a razor to their chest… the result is an awful feeling chest. Are you dating anybody and if you are, how is that going? How did you two meet? I have been partners with Jared Bradford (@jbradfordinc) for over 4 years now. We met while GoGo dancing in New Orleans for Mardi Gras back in the spring of 2012. Life with Jared is amazing. He’s my best friend and my family. If I want to meet men, I simply go to the Starbucks (I have affectionately dubbed it Starfucks) on 49th Street between 8th and 9th Avenues (almost the heart of Hell’s Kitchen) and sit on Scruff. Usually takes about 30 minutes and voila, sex is ordered! Kidding (well, sort of ). I meet men in a variety of ways from online apps like Grindr or Scruff, Instagram (my DM box looks line Instagrindr) or Facebook. But I also meet them in real life at parties, the gym, and sometimes just passing on the street. Turn-ons? Juicy lips, a curvy body, a confident but friendly attitude, high self-esteem but not cocky, a guy who smiles, someone with genuinely good intentions. Turn-offs? Flakes, people that only text or respond when it benefits them, shady people, monogamy, jealousy, puritanical behavior, and beliefs not backed up by evidence. What’s your relationship with social media and your followers? Well, I have a personal Facebook and I try to genuinely interact with my friends on that platform. As far as my Facebook dancer page and my Instagram... I can’t possibly respond to or interact with every comment. So I simply post out to the social sphere and hope for the best. Strangest or funniest fan sighting? Jared and I went to the beach in Mexico last fall for a boyfriend vacation. I was literally on the beach for a good five minutes and started getting surrounded by people wanting to chat and take pics. Was a lot of fun but also took me by surprise. ON P R O E T T T A NO M WHAT L ast spring, I was sitting outside with some friends enjoying a happy hour seltzer on the corner of Locust and 12th Streets in Philadelphia. I saw my good friend Matt Beierschmitt down the street, so I waved. He had wanted me to DJ a drag show at the gay sports bar Tabu later that evening, so I wanted to find out the details. As I waved, a tall, bald headed, gay, black man with a septum piercing thought I was waving to him. I awkwardly corrected the mistake, and he continued to shake off the blunder with a hilarious facial expression I probably won’t ever forget. When I went upstairs to meet the cast of the show later that night, that same person was busy finishing his nails at the vanity. He was quiet, unassuming and soft spoken. I recently realized who he was; Bob The Drag Queen. I already sort of became a fan from afar, seeing posts about the comedy queen on social media and hearing only great things about the performer. I fanned girl out, and instantly re-

alized my dumb ass gaff earlier that day, recognizing I was in the presence of a true gay great.

Who was mild mannered and unassuming in the dressing room became larger than life on stage. Her performances only superseded my high expectations. With about 15 people in the audience, a lower turn out than usual, she performed an incredible show that you would think was being delivered to a sold out house at Carnegie Hall.

Now, more than a year later, Bob The Drag Queen is on top. She seemingly swiftly sashayed through the competition on RuPaul’s Drag Race with ease and finesse - similar to Bianca Del Rio two seasons ago. Whether or not she claims the title this season is yet to be determined, as we go to print the day of the finale’s airing. But regardless, Bob has established herself as the best – something the New York community already knew before the airing of the season’s premiere. Continued on next page g

We had the opportunity to ask Bob a few questions and find out what she learned this season on RuPaul’s Drag Race. Your favorite memory from this season? My favorite memory this season was during the episode of “Untucked” when Chi Chi finds out Derrick Barry has two boyfriends. She was just like, “Oh that’s amazing, that really is.” Ha! I say that all the time now, “Oh that’s amazing, that really is.” Looking back, do you regret anything you said on camera? No no no, I think I hold myself to a great level of integrity. I may have spoken incorrectly when I said, “I hate Lorde.” That wasn’t true. I do not hate Lorde (the singer).

Most of us were performers before we did drag, and we were already performing when we discovered drag. So we already had a leg up. We already knew how to be a performer, you know? My favorite quote of yours all season was, “Everything works out in the end. If it’s not working out, it’s not the end.” Who inspired that and looking back, what does that mean to you now that you are here at the end? It’s something I read back when I was in high school, I think I first read it on a magnet. I just immediately thought the meaning is so important. It’s so important to remember that your life will always work out in the end, and that’s still how I feel now. Everything will work out in the end.

Tell our readers about your new single “Purse First.” My single is available on iTunes now! “Purse First” is inspired by Purse First – she was born on the first episode of Drag Race (season 8). And she stars in nearly every episode.

What do you want your fans to know if you lose? If I lose, it’s not going to change my trajectory or my path. It will only change how I am introduced when I go on stage.

n order to build quality mass and increase overall strength, you must subject your muscles progressively to more and heavier weight training. In addition, you need a periodized training schedule whereby muscle groups are worked to exhaustion using different and varying movements. All this requires effort, sweat and hopefully, for the most part, a degree of excitement. There’s nothing like seeing and feeling those results to spur you on to greater success!

FITNESS While there are loads of “ups” that go with weight training (bigger muscles, that endorphin pump, super- man strength, improved self-esteem, etc.), there is also a downside. There are those occasional pesky plateaus, where you just can’t seem to grow no matter how hard you work. There is the delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) that kicks your butt when you tackle a new training regime. All these are common complaints of those who work out religiously, and all can be overcome with time, patience and diligence in the gym. If you’re always sore, your joints ache, you can’t sleep at night, and you feel an overall malaise about going to the gym, you may be over training. This can prove to be a more serious matter than the issues discussed above. Overdoing it to the point of severe exhaustion, even risking injuries, is a common and serious problem which all fitness enthusiasts and bodybuilders must address when it occurs, before it beats them. There are some common symptoms that indicate that you just may be overtraining: 1.) Muscle and joint pain which persists for more than two or three days without showing improvement 2.) Elevated heart rate that continues and causes you agitation even after you have finished working out 3.) Loss of appetite 4.) Difficulty being able to fall asleep and or interrupted, poor sleep patterns 5.) A compromised immune system that causes you to suffer from, headaches, catch colds and other infections, loss of weight and even depression which causes you to withdraw from the gym and other social situations that you used to enjoy 6.) Weakened and compromised tendons and reduced muscle strength, all of which make you a prime candidate for muscle sprains and strains Exercise is supposed to enhance your quality of life. When it controls your thought processes, causing you to over-train or train foolishly disregarding the need for rest and proper exercise form, then you need to take a break. There are some important measures you should take if you feel like you may be overtraining. First, take an exercise break, allowing your body to rest and heal for a few days or even weeks. Secondly, seek medical attention for any muscle or joint pain that has persisted over time. Never ignore pain; it is your body’s way of telling you something is wrong. Finally, if you can’t take a complete break, pull back on your exercise routine by varying your intensity, taking time to warm up, stretch, drink water and cool down after your session. Exercise is beneficial to your health and longevity. Enjoy the results and the attention it garners you. Just be sure not to overdo it, Big Guy, by risking illness and injury which are counter-productive to your goals and dreams!
