New York’s Hottest (smartest?) Joke ADULT STARS WHO GET MFAS WHEN THE BUTT PLUG ISN’T ENOUGH JUST MIGHT BE THE HOTTEST TICKET IN TOWN.

’m a fan of gay porn star Colby Keller, and I’ve not really seen any of his movies. Okay, let me qualify that: I’ve not seen his full-length films or pay-towatch videos online from his body of porn work, which involves Keller (who’s strappingly buff, sometimes bearded, a bit hairy-chested and very handsome in a slightly Germanic, dirty blond, jocknext-door sort of way) topping or bottoming enthusiastically, or just getting into some festive man-sex. I’m not a prude. But I can never make it through a full-on porno. Usually, I can make do with a two-minute preview or some short clip found online. Hey…I’m easy. That said, Colby Keller charms the hell out of me because in a world where what you see of many porn stars are only shiny, hard schlongs, jacked muscles, questionable tattoos and aggro Zoolander-esque stares, Keller is funny. He’s into weird contemporary art, wiener jokes and the writings of Karl Marx, he’s got an MFA and he likes wearing goofy costumes and springtime flowers. And last week he became the resident sex advice columnist

NYPD DETECTIVE Carl Locke didn’t always want to be a cop. In fact, he first came to New York to study acting. But Locke soon found himself front and center at protests against anti-gay bias and homophobic panic. “I felt that if I really wanted to make a difference I could do more inside of the police department than outside looking in.” So eleven years ago, at age 34, Locke joined the NYPD. And on April 20, he’ll be front and center helping honor Governor Andrew Cuomo, Posh owner John Greco and fellow officers at the annual dinner of LGBT police advocacy group Gay Office Action League (GOALNY.org), of which the Park Slope resident is president. “I wish all gay police officers would live fully out lives, but unfortunately we are not there yet. Without [GOAL], I never would have been a police officer or even considered it.”

for Manhunt.com blog, ManhuntDaily. I know all of this about Keller thanks to his popular blog, Big Shoe Diaries. There he posts videos of himself and his boyfriend singing Christmas carols in sombreros, publishes music playlists, videos of himself reading poems and novels (sometimes shirtless, sometimes not)—you know, the kind of stuff any of us might do on Facebook. It’s a mix of highbrow and silly. And yep, there are sometime dick shots and there’s the all popular “I See Penis” series where Keller’s

fans or friends send him photos of phallic imagery manifested in real life: a cockshaped vegetable, a phallic spot on a dog’s back, a silo in a landscape. I think Keller’s on to something. Many of today’s celebs make it by appealing to the “they’re just like us” mode of celebdom. Kathy Griffin hit it big by telling showbiz jokes and stories as a dorky outsider looking in. Ross Mathews became a celebrity as an intern on The Tonight Show, being that hyper-giddy funny guy we’ve all worked with before. And I think Keller’s real hotness and appeal lies in his relaxed affability and freedom to share his own interests and goofy/hip “likes” in an industry that’s largely about veneer and fantasy. And the fact that in his day job he’s hot and seems to really enjoy having sex doesn’t hurt either. I’m not the only one who thinks Keller is on to something. Thomas Rogers at brainy Salon.com chimed in about Keller’s smarty-pants appeal. Ya hear that, porn-makers? Sometimes we like a little brains with our big dicks. N

“IT IS EASIER TO FORGET you’re in the city when you’re at Iris Café (20 Columbia Pl, Brooklyn Heights, IrisCafeNYC.com). It is nestled away on my street, an inconspicuous block in Brooklyn Heights, a charming little place to grab a bite or coffee before school, or to drop in for brunch on the weekends. The crowd is a mix of your standard Brooklyn Heights families and the 20-something set while the staff has that cool hipster vibe. While the place is not particularly gay, it’s a good mix. If anything, it has a trend of nice-looking people. I find it a great place to sit and read on weekday afternoons and the weekend brunch is great without getting really busy. Plus, I am addicted to their iced coffee—it’s made with espresso and I can’t find a better iced coffee around.” —Matthew Paluch, 26, law student living in Brooklyn Heights

FINDING THE FIGHT AFTER 25 YEARS OF ACT UP, WHY AREN’T GAYS ANGRY ABOUT THE HIV/AIDS EPIDEMIC ANYMORE?

sk an ACT UP member why so few people seem to feel the intense anger and outrage associated with late-80s/early-90s HIV/AIDS demonstrations and you’ll probably get a variation on the same answer: drugs. “When Antiretroviral treatment became widely available—of course always out of reach for some people—people turned their attention to other social justice issues,” says Jennifer Flynn, an ACT UP member since 1994. Flynn, who is the Managing Director for Health Global Access Project, says that after years of struggle the life saving drugs made the fight for a cure less urgent, but that for those without access to treatment the future is still scary. “I don’t think that people who have AIDS are past the angry stage,” she points out. On April 25 ACT UP will stage a protest on Wall Street that couples their 25-year-old organization with another, more recent protest movement, Occupy. “There are a number of similarities,” says ACT UP founding member Eric Sawyer. “Both of our movements are rooted in social justice. Both of our movements are rooted in equality.” Not to mention that both movements got their start taking aim at moneyed financial sector elites unwilling to respond to the needs of “the 99%” in lower Manhattan. The protest also comes on the heels of two films about ACT UP’s struggle, How to Survive a Plague and United In Anger: A History of ACT, which both have received screenings at MoMA this year. “I would hate for people to get the idea that there isn’t an urgency anymore,” says Brandon Cuicchi, a media technician, who recently joined ACT UP in February. He says that there is still a sense of magnitude surrounding the HIV/AIDS epidemic, but that it’s not as widely, or as loudly discussed as it

once was. “If it’s not there now it’s about to bubble over again.” Since the introduction and widespread use of antiretroviral medications the epidemic has morphed in many ways. Flynn points out that the trajectory of the HIV/AIDS epidemic is such that it could literally become a thing of the past within 30 years. “And that’s not rhetoric,” she says. Last year a study called HPTN 052 illustrated something that HIV/AIDS researchers had long suspected. “It

In peering into the trailblazing lesbian musician’s wild ride towards eventual happiness (she’s now married to one of the doc’s producers, a touching scene toward the end of the film), we also get one of the most intimate, voyeuristic peeks into the family life of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love ever recorded via the home videos Schemel made during her time with the band. “Our mantra going through the movie and making the movie was that anything can be in the movie as long as it relates back to Patty,” Ebersole explains. “That really beautiful, amazing footage of Kurt and Courtney has a moment where it takes over the movie,” he says. And it’s not without merit. “For us, one of the key moments of the movie was seeing that…Kurt is sort of funny and a goofball, which we would have never known. It’s easy to get caught up in all of the glitz and glamour of the fundraising gala and forget that Point Foundation is so much more to the students who become Point Scholars than a check to get them through school—which probably accounts in part for its meteoric growth from a small organization founded by Bruce Lindstrom and Carl Strickland in 2001, to the slick operation it is today—an organization that

DAN HECHING INVESTIGATES THE GAY OFFERINGS AT THIS YEAR’S TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL. pringtime is abloom around us, and once again the Tribeca Film Festival unveils its impossibly huge roster, this year with over 40 feature-length entries and 60 shorts all set to screen between April 18 and 29. One notable departure from the routine— surely a stunt to gain as much press (and make as much money?) as possible—is the inclusion of a not-so-small film as the closing-night spectacle: Joss Whedon’s Marvel powerhouse The Avengers. As for entries of a lighter touch, here’s the list of this year’s gay films. —Dan Heching

Jack & Diane An awkward but sweet tale about überyoung lesbian love in summertime New York, featuring the excellent Riley Keough (Elvis’s granddaughter!) as sexy tomboy Jack, Adaptation’s Cara Seymour and—get this—a super-sexual cameo by Kylie Minogue.

Keep the Lights On A Grand Jury Prize contender at Sundance, this urban love story based on a relationship from director Ira Sachs’ own experience is a striking and sexually charged portrait of a passionate affair between a filmmaker and a closeted lawyer in late-’90s New York.

Mansome The latest from Super Size Me director Morgan Spurlock, this documentary poses the completely overblown question, “What does it mean to be a man?” and takes on pressing themes such as manscaping, metrosexuals and male grooming products, with Arrested Development stars Will Arnett and Jason Bateman in tow as executive producers.

Any Day Now Co-hosted by NewFest, this Alan Cumming vehicle takes on gay adoption rights in 1970s Los Angeles, and features a performance already creating considerable buzz from Isaac Leyva. Newcomer

Eytan Fox (Israeli auteur of the brilliant Walk on Water) returns with this unlikely sequel to the acclaimed Yossi & Jagger, again starring Ohad Knoller in the role that won him TFF’s Best Actor award.

Struck by Lightning Starring Chris Colfer in an only slightly less glammed-out role than he plays on Glee, this high school comedy seems a little bit Election, a little bit Kurt and a generous helping of Allison Janney mixed in for good measure.

Hysteria A period romance revolving around the birth of the vibrator, with the positively delightful Hugh Dancy and Maggie Gyllenhaal, not to mention a hairy-faced (and still enticing) Rupert Everett. Let’s hope it’s at least as good as everyone said the play In The Next Room (or the vibrator play) was.

“QUOTED” For straight ally JUSTIN LONG, who took over the role of Martin from Hamish Linklater in Theresa Rebeck’s literary-themed Broadway play Seminar on April 3, there isn’t much difference in how he preps for comedy versus drama—both of which pervade his new character’s onstage interactions. “They both require the same sort of skill set, I think,” he says. “As long as the writing is funny and the situation is funny enough, as long as you’re committing to the intention of the scene, you have to trust that it’s going to be funny, or it’s going to be dramatic, whatever the scene is.” For a second he seems to get turned around in his explanation. “I think the thing to avoid is thinking about it in terms of [being] one way or another… Does that make sense?” he asks cutely. An example helps the boyish 33-year-old clarify his meaning: “You see a lot of great comedic actors easily doing drama and vice versa, too. I just saw Johnny Depp in an episode of Life’s Too Short. He was doing this scene where he was mad at Warwick Davis and at Ricky Gervais and he was so funny, but it was only funny because he had committed to playing a kind of douchier version of himself.”

FRIDAY APRIL 20 SPOTLIGHT

COMEBACK KIDDING

HOW OUT ACTOR GEORGE TAKEI HAS BECOME AN UNLIKELY VOICE FOR THE FACEBOOK GENERATION.

W

hen I spoke to George Takei over the phone, he was just returning to his Los Angeles home after a weekend in Seattle at the Emerald City Comicon with his husband, Brad. “You’re not getting me at my best I must tell you,” he apologizes. I was ecstatic to speak to him at all. “[The Comicon] was totally exhausting and last night we celebrated by going to a seafood restaurant and having a bottle of Pinot Gris,” he said. Was George Takei implying he was a little hungover? So what. I couldn’t help but be delighted by his pronunciation of “Gris.” He followed through to the end of the word in a beautiful, almost arcane way. His voice is that of a generation that prized masculinity—and I’m not ashamed to say it’s pretty hot. The best part is that it’s clear that the eloquent, polished way he speaks on camera is just his natural speaking voice. After years of relative obscurity, the spry septuagenarian has made a ravishing comeback thanks in part to his 2005 coming out, much to the delight of nerds everywhere—especially those of the Star Trek-viewing variety. Tonight, gay nerd group Geeks Out will celebrate Takei’s return to our cultural Zeitgeist with their annual fundraising effort—in the form of their party, aptly named “Takei Back the Night”—that gives fanboys a chance to show off some of their own Takei-inspired artwork. “Well, actually I’ve been out informally, you know to family and friends [for some time],” he’s quick to point out. “I was a member of a running club called the Front Runners and that’s where I met Brad,” Takei explains. In 2005, when then-governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed the California marriage equality bill that had passed both the State Senate and Legislature, Takei knew it was time to make his voice heard. “I was stunned,” he tells me. “Arnold Schwarzenegger…had campaigned saying, ‘I’m from Hollywood. I’ve worked with gays and lesbians. I’m comfortable with gays and lesbians. Some of my best friends are [gay].’ All the cliché things, and I thought, surely he’s going to sign it,” says the former Trek actor, who, as a member of the board of directors of the Southern California Transit District, helped shape the Los Angeles subway system. “That night I was watching the news and here I saw all these young people pouring out on Santa Monica Boulevard protesting [the veto] and I felt that anger as well—my blood was boiling.” That’s when he went to the press. In October of that year he officially came out to Frontiers Magazine, unintentionally opening the floodgates of renewed interest in the quiet man who once played the

“I thought surely when I started adding other people who were cast, like Gilbert Gottfried or, you know, Lisa Lampanelli as a Bajoran security chief, I thought they might get it.” Enterprise’s swashbuckling helmsman. Takei accepted a request from Howard Stern to appear on his satellite radio show as a quarterly guest host (“Howard is a good guy and he basically is gay-friendly,” he says) and was fielding requests for guest roles left and right almost immediately after his first appearance on the show. “Howard influences so many unexpected people, a lot being producers of TV shows, and I got a lot of guest gigs and series, particularly shows like Will and Grace,”Takei expounds. Of course, he’s too humble to bring up another major reason most people under 30 have fallen in love with him recently. Not surprisingly, it has something to do with social media. Takei updates his Facebook status more regularly than I do (which is saying a lot, considering he turns 75 April 20), and on April 1 he posted a goof about a new Star Trek movie being in the works. People freaked out (the post has more than 17,500 comments), and those who didn’t immediately pick up on the joke were pissed. “I thought surely when I started adding other people who were cast, like Gilbert Gottfried or, you know, Lisa Lampanelli as a Bajoran security chief, I thought they might get it,” he chuckles. A lot of his posts are politically motivated. In many ways Takei’s political motivations—based heavily on his experiences in Japanese internment camps during World War II and as a closeted gay man in 1960s Hollywood— define him. Currently, he is working on a musical called Allegiance about his experiences in the internment camps that he hopes will move to Broadway sometime early next year. He reminds me that one of the most decorated units of the Second World War was the all-Japanese-American segregated unit. “I owe the America I know today in large

part to the incredible bravery and patriotism of those crazy guys that went from behind those barbed fences [in the camps] to put on the very same uniform as the sentinels that guarded over us,” he says. But for all the seriousness of his causes, almost all of Takei’s remarks have a cutting wit not expected of a man who remembers when being out meant giving up any hope of personal success. “Humor can be a potent weapon in exposing the stupidity of some of these hateful people,” he says of anti-gay politicians. “Some of these homophobic politicians are so ridiculous that they lend themselves so easily to lampooning,” he says, and there again I can’t help but notice his perfect pronunciation of that last, flawlessly chosen word. Really that’s what’s so fascinating, so definitive, about Takei: his voice. It’s one that bridges his generation to ours. It calls for peace among nerds quibbling about which star-inspired super series is better, Trek or Wars. It amuses millions via his gut-busting Facebook and Twitter posts. It insists on sanity and civility in an insane, impolite world. And it booms (literally) for both marriage equality and gay rights. The same man who says semi-stodgy things like “the cell phone has become a nuisance in our society” and pronounces words with a reverence that suggests he has selected them only after much consideration also calls homophobic politicians “douche bags.” His has become the unlikely voice of this generation. —Alex Erikson Takei Back the Night at CFAN, 417 W 57th St (btwn Ninth/10th Aves), April 20 from 7pm–10pm; free. FROM PARIS WITH LOVE Lizzie Brocheré and Pierre Perrier in American Translation

Reel Love Hit So Hard

American Translation

Time Investment: 103 min. Return on Investment: 90 min.

Time Investment: 109 min. Return on Investment: 50 min. ive minutes into American Translation (On DVD from TLA Releasing) and swarthy lead Pierre Perrier is already shirtless. Over the next two hours his character, Chris, will fuck girls—and boys—perform striptease in a Laundromat and seduce you with his stare and his chilling smile. He’s like a French Jonathan Groff with better abs and an unstoppable bi-sexual appetite. It’s no wonder rich and damaged Frenchspeaking American Aurore (Lizzie Brocheré) falls madly in love with him despite his tendency to fuck gay prostitutes so hard he kills them. Hell, she’ll even help him dispose of the bodies in the woods so long as he caresses her breasts and whispers philosophically in her ear. Parisian directors Pascal Arnold and Jean-Marc Barr capture that Dreamers-esque seduction that only French men, language and culture can achieve. Less Bonnie and Clyde and more Natural Born Killers, American Translation is a Cronenberg-esque take on sex and violence so captivating you root for the two leads and their devilish sex games. But the last act of Translation is murky, dropping its fantastical magic and indie soundtrack for a directionless narrative that ends in a silly bit of closure. And then there is that title: though a few moments of the film are bilingual, very little if anything has to do with culture clash—beyond its appeal to American audiences on purely superficial reasons, that is. —Benjamin Solomon

f you liked to rock out in the ‘90s, Hole was the real thing. Back in the era when Courtney Love had some salvageable talent, lesbian drummer Patty Schemel embarked with the influential band on a whirlwind of fame, parties, scandal and— oooh yeah!—drugs. P. David Ebersole’s intimate documentary Hit So Hard (Variance Films) follows Schemel from Hole’s Live Through This and Kurt Cobain’s suicide to Hole bassist Kristen Pfaff’s fatal overdose, and onward along her own self-destructive path, ultimately hitting rock bottom and coming out the other side. What could have been yet another documentary in this thoroughly mined category feels new and engaging, largely thanks to Schemel’s disarming ability to re-

I

flect on some pretty dark times (not to mention cliché strung-out-rocker moments) with lightness and poise. Her sound effects when imitating herself as a junkie are irresistibly funny, revealing just how far she’s come, and the decision to interview her annually as she remains sober is particularly effective. Also in there is one of the most heartfelt coming-out stories ever recounted, by Patty’s mother, as well as a fascinating (if brief ) overview of the history of female drummers and the odds they’ve had to face, featuring interviews with favorites like Beastie Boys drummer Kate Schellenbach. The doc alludes to the particular influence lesbians have had over music, specifically the grunge movement, which, according to famed folksinger Phranc, is entirely owed to lesbian fashion: “The flannels? …It came right from lesbians.” —Dan Heching

Paul Nolan and company in Jesus Christ Superstar

Curtain Up Jesus Christ superstar End of the Rainbow

THEATER

NEXTMAGAZINE.COM

By David Hurst esus Christ Superstar was originally produced as a “rock opera” concept album in 1970, before being fashioned into a stage musical. It’s always been an uneasy fit of religious proselytizing and anachronistic dogma, but those of us who grew up loving musicals in the ’70s fell in love with its songs, reveling in the exuberant melodies, rhythmic tempo changes and kaleidoscopic use of electric guitars in its sensational score. Surprisingly, it’s always been a better show to listen to rather than see and this new revival does little to change that fact. Directed with crass ineptitude by Des McAnuff, this Superstar’s best news is that much of the singing is exceptional, including the stentorian Caiaphas of Marcus Nance, the highflying Annas of Aaron Walpole, the urgent Judas Iscariot of Josh Young and, most certainly, the Herculean vocalizing of Jesus Christ as portrayed by Paul Nolan. A well-rehearsed, skillful 14-piece orchestra supports them with panache. Sadly, that is where the panache ends. The acting in this Superstar is quite dreadful. Though the handsome Paul Nolan couldn’t look more like the classic stock image of Jesus that has hung in religious homes across America for decades, there is nothing going on behind those eyes and under those tresses. Gliding about the stage as if on some kind of barbiturate (did someone start making Tuinal again?) in white linen hostess pants with matching bathrobe that Donna Karan might have whipped up for a garden party in the Hamptons, Nolan seldom seems to move from the neck down. Christ is supposed to be in a rage when he drives the people out of the temple, but the go-go boys in leather harnesses merely sneer when Nolan dumps a couple trays of shot glasses on the stage. Later, when Christ is supposed to be set upon by lepers begging to be

healed, Nolan lays on the floor shouting “There’s too many of you!” but there’s no one near him thanks to the genius of McAnuff’s headscratching staging. For his part, Josh Young as Judas looks like Josh Groban’s little brother and acts like a petulant schoolboy just returned from Oxford with an axe to grind about social reform. All the while he keeps one eye on Nolan’s nipple, which keeps sneaking out from behind his peek-a-boo bathrobe. As for the woefully miscast Chilina Kennedy as Mary Magdalene, her acting consists of lots of furtive head-snapping and angry glares that recall Anne Baxter in, well, almost anything. Kennedy has a pretty good voice, but she’s saddled with what is perhaps one of the worst costumes in the history of American musical theater—a bizarre spaghetti-strap high-school prom formal with yards of extra fabric pulled up and attached round her skirt. Every time Kennedy came on stage, the Selma Diamondesque woman from Teaneck behind me said loudly, “…what is she wearing?” to which I could only sigh, nod and whisper under my breath, “what indeed?” The best costumes, and performances, are reserved for Tom Hewitt as a calculatingly cold Pontius Pilate, and an unleashed Bruce Dow as a King Herod, who’s channeling equal parts Nathan Lane and Joan Crawford. Fans of Judy Garland will be sharply divided by Peter Quilter’s new play, End of the Rainbow, which portrays Garland (played by the gifted Tracie Bennett) six months before she died, trying for one more comeback at London’s “Talk of the Town” with accompanist Anthony (a beautifully understated Michael Cumpsty) while wrangling her addictions and fifth-husband-to-be, Mickey Deans (the handsome Tom Pelphrey). Quilter’s vile and odious script, which combines contrived tabloid dialogue with scenes of Judy in concert, isn’t really worth discussing. It’s the acting by the company, which also includes the versatile Jay Russell in three different roles, that’s the draw, particularly Bennett, whose energy and commitment to the role—however misguided and over-thetop they become during Rainbow—are extraordinary. N Jesus Christ Superstar plays at the Neil Simon (250 W 52nd St, SuperstarOnBroadway.com). End of the Rainbow plays at the Belasco (111 W 44th St, EndOfTheRainbowBroadway.com).

Michael Montlack

Out Words By Jameson Fitzpatrick

Bowing Down and Queening Out ufus Wainwright once said that a fascination with Stevie Nicks is the true mark of an interesting gay man. By that standard, Michael Montlack is one of the most interesting gay men writing today—his love for the witchy woman of Fleetwood Mac fame has inspired him to edit not one, but two anthologies: 2009’s My Diva, a collection of essays by gay men on the women who inspire them, and now, Divining Divas: 100 Gay Men on Their Muses (Lethe Press), a new companion collection of poetry out this month. Alongside Montlack’s own tribute to Ms. Nicks, a host of other spellbinding women get the poetic treatment in Divining Divas, including “actresses, politicians, artists, athletes, chefs, dancers, writers, cartoon characters and even Amy Sedaris’ Strangers with Candy character Jerri Blank,” he explains. Some of the divas are living, some dead, some fictional, some real—but they have at least two things in common: a gay cult following and plenty of personality. Two of my favorite poems in the anthology happen to be by former Next Magazine writers Angelo Nikolopoulos and Jerome Murphy. Nikolopoulos’ “Going Garbo” is just as fun as the title suggests—and a bit darker—while Murphy’s poem “Go Tell Alice” cleverly reimagines Alice in Wonderland in contemporary New York. Other standouts include literary it-boy Alex Dimitrov’s “Self Portrait as Brigitte Bardot in Contempt” and Billy Merrell’s timely “National Anthem, 1991,” in which he recalls watching Whitney Houston’s nowlegendary performance of “The Star Spangled Banner” before Super Bowl XXV. The lengthy contributor list also features big names such as Mark Doty and Frank Bidart, whose 18-line poem “Marilyn Monroe” is better than every episode of Smash put together. That said, even diehard Smash fans should enjoy this book. You don’t need to be a regular reader of poetry “to appreciate the music, humor, power and style in these poems,” Montlack explains, “because they come from a place of love and admiration, and anyone can tap into that.” If you’ve ever gotten into a heated debate while defending the honor of your favorite female singer, literary character or reality TV star (and girl, I know you have), there’s sure to

be something in Divining Divas that will resonate with you. Plus, April is National Poetry Month—what better time to expand your mind and secure your standing as an “interesting gay man”? As the consummate Stevie Nicks fan, Montlack has nothing to worry about, of course. He describes his loyalty as “not only strong, but unwavering,” and says he still feels the same “joy and awe” he felt for her at 10. This sense of “joy and awe” for the women written about in Divining Divas—even when tempered by exasperation or a bit of light-hearted teasing—makes it a pleasure from cover to cover. N We also recommend: Cool Limbo and My Diva (ed.) by Michael Montlack.

Bookmark ainstakingly researched and beautifully imagined, Paul Russell’s The Unreal Life of Sergey Nabokov (Cleis Press) reanimates the life of Vladimir Nabokov’s gay brother, a real historical figure. The Nabokovs and their friends lived in uncertain but exciting times, and Russell richly textures his masterful novel with some of the most dynamic people and places of the first half of the 20th century. Acclaimed writer Colm Tóibín lives up to his reputation with his newest collection of short stories, The Empty Family (Scribner). Set primarily in his native Ireland, Tóibín’s sensitive, delicately rendered stories look to various characters’ experiences of displacement and the often-painful act of returning home. In The Great Night (FSG), author and doctor Chris Adrian—named by The New Yorker as one of their “20 under 40”—conjures a fresh, fantastical version of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream set in a San Francisco park. Funny, wacky and yet extraordinarily tender, The Great Night is an engrossing and truly transporting read.

By Peter Sherwood ho’da thunk it? Right in the heart of Penn Plaza, what my dining companion has dubbed as “Ugly Town,” is a delicious plunge amidst the raucous, hurried bunch primed to hop on their respective commuter trains. One might not expect well-executed food a stone’s throw away from a TGI Fridays or a Payless Shoes—but how delicious to be surrounded by a diorama of iconic shots from Fellini’s masterpiece, La Dolce Vita, in tribute to the restaurant‘s home-style Italian cuisine. At first, while considering wines, I wondered if the roaming map was a warning of things to come. The Vernaccia white from Siena stalled a little but eventually succumbed to the evening as it opened up. My next glass turned toward a cleaner Gavi from the Piemonte region, resonating with a bright melon body. Reds involved an easy drinking Sangiovese with a soft

start and luxuriated into a sharper, leathery finish. The Sicilian Nero d’Avola was a robust match for the meal. The housemade, amazing mozzarella was the marqueeworthy star of the platter we were presented with in a vibrant display. The dish featured a field of yellow and red vine-fresh tomatoes in quite a collaborative effort, with extra virgin olive oil showered over scorched peppers, purple olives, tonguey folds of sopressata and invigorating, aromatic basil fronds—it would be disrespectful to suggest that these huge leaves were a mere garnish. We passed on pizza that appeared on neighboring tables and seemed to be rather pedestrian, venturing instead toward a pasta course that commenced with crescents of semolina gnocchi that were really more like a subtle pyramid of polenta soaking in a buttery truffle fonduta with wild mushrooms and little frills of shredded Parmesan. Cavatelli “malloreddus” repre-

sented tradition and arrived perfectly al dente with gentle, homemade sausage, porcini mushrooms and ricotta cheese that further ridiculed us, daring us to devour. Crispy artichokes found a wonderful balance with a pert lemon aioli. Enormously engorged, moist meatballs in tangy pomodoro sauce stunned us, incorporating caramelized onions for sweetness. Elegantly slinking past dessert cocktails that utilized a lot of gruesome, throat-thickening components such as vanilla vodka, Kahlúa, milk and amaretto, we settled down with a glass of grappa and a cup of mint tea served in an organza purse suitably attired for steeping. Desserts seemed boring in comparison, although we might have sampled the raspberried chocolate truffle mousse. Instead we dabbled with a pleasantly light lemon custard with almonds and wine-poached pears as well as a ricotta cheesecake with a musky balsamic reduc-

tion. Had we been merely awaiting a train to take us home, we surely would have stayed and boarded a conveyance later. N

PRICES: Appetizers: $5-15; Entrées: $18-$40; Alcohol: wine, full bar, dessert cocktails.

SHORT ORDER: Lugo Caffe is an unexpected experience in the heart of Penn Plaza, offering up well-executed, home-style Italian fare in a cavernous setting.

APRIL 13, 2012 45

Aries (MARCH 21–APRIL 20) Conquerors and rulers throughout history were born sharing your sign. Their ideas became realities that changed the world. Use that natural ability not only to your advantage but for the benefit of everyone.

Taurus (APRIL 21–MAY 21) A want is sometimes disguised as a need. Most people, situations and things in your life could use some organizing into those two piles of what’s needed and what’s desired. Then let one pile go.

Gemini (MAY 22–JUNE 21) Your lot is naturally “I” centered. Putting your wants first is a good goal, but don’t forget about those around you who care about the deeper you. Hush your topical personality for a bit.

Cancer (JUNE 22–JULY 23) They’ll keep taking as long as you give. Express needs to appropriate channels to receive necessary support. Then explore differences between others’ needs and wants; those with needs are easier to satisfy.

Leo (JULY 24–AUGUST 23) “Wanting it all” was a popular personality trait pushed in the 1980s to get the greedy masses to buy more stuff. Campaign for the return to need and life will paradoxically get fuller.

Virgo (AUGUST 24–SEPTEMBER 23)

NEXTMAGAZINE.COM

Luckily your type absolutely knows the difference between things you want compared to what is needed, and is honest about it. The practical needs list has standards but the want list can be pretty expensive.

Libra (SEPTEMBER 24–OCTOBER 23) The mind insists on desires to fuel the creative fires. Meanwhile the heart needs the emotional connection that sentiment and people provide. Things are just tools—don’t confuse them with the real prize!

Scorpio (OCTOBER 24–NOVEMBER 22) Constantly reminding lovers or friends of what you want puts on a good show of having ambition. But hiding your personal needs and classifying them as vulnerabilities requires reconsideration.

Sagittarius (NOVEMBER 23 –DECEMBER 22)

HOROSCOPE

Wanting everything from the right career to perfect school, lovers and place to live can be all consuming. Let fate work and instead of being a control freak, you’ll see your wants and needs go hand in hand.

Capricorn (DECEMBER 23 –JANUARY 20) Owning inner needs can get too sentimental; getting what you want only requires working hard and knowing the right people. Take some time to hear—and seek—what your heart and body need.

Aquarius (JANUARY 21–FEBRUARY 19) You just need people to see everything from your point of view and then you’d get what you want: freedom, ease and better television programming. Until then keep filling our heads with your dreams!

Pisces (FEBRUARY 20–MARCH 20) Don’t be ashamed to go after what you want. Exploring the physical/material balances the spiritual and emotional needs; then you’ll know what to pursue with all your energy and heart. © 2012 James Jacob Pierri. All rights reserved. NO MAN LEFT BEHIND

SHOOTING BLANKS

BETTER OFF BLUE-BALLED

By Manuel Hung & Rod Steely THAT KID FROM THE 7 TRAIN Kennedy Carter in Name of the Game

Name of the Game (CockyBoys, 1-877-315-2922, CockyBoys.com) n New York City, the name of the game is survival. And Cocky Boys always come out on top.

I

MANUEL: Rod, this movie was shot al-

most entirely in my neighborhood, Long Island City, which I like to call LIC NYC (pronounced “lick nice”). After Cocky Boys, I might have to redub it “lick nasty.” Kennedy Carter and Phenix Saint got very nasty, fucking in front of a window in plain view of passing Flushing line trains. Riding the 7 was never so much fun, but still not as enjoyable as watching Carter riding the 8½. ROD: I recently met Carter in the flesh, first at the Hookies and then at a private party where he was the present (nice package, I must say!). So I was excited to compare this sexy redhead’s on-screen

performance with the real thing. Carter definitely measures up! MANUEL: NOTG gets lots of bonus points for concept, variety, good performances (Tommy Defendi is a natural with dialogue), using two cameras and cum-play. These Cocky Boys are Bukkake Boys! Plus the final six-way, where Defendi fulfills sexy power bottom Marc Dylan’s fantasy (“to be tag-teamed by a group of big-dicked tops like the little bitch boy” that he is) was creative and really well staged. ROD: The individual scenes were hot, but the final orgy didn’t quite come together for me. I’d expect six hot guys in one room to generate more heat. Carter more than makes up for some of the bottoms’ lack of enthusiasm, but then again, I have a personal bias.

MANUEL:

DYSTOPIAN DICK Marc Dylan in Cockwork

Cockwork (Raging Stallion, 1-877-327-0707, RagingStallion.com) t seems like Raging Stallion turns out a new, hot porn movie each week, like clockwork.

I

ROD: Put seven gay porn studs in bowler hats, jockstraps and garters, and you could wind up with something that looks like the third bus and truck company of Fosse. But in Tony DiMarco’s capable hands, you have a hot movie that reminds you of A Clockwork Orange without ripping it off. MANUEL: Rod, as a fan of DiMarco and a huge devotee of Stanley Kubrick, I couldn’t wait to see how Raging Stallion would adapt Anthony Burgess’s dystopian story of morality and sociopathic sadists—the perfect subjects for a porn satire! Sadly, the only real creativity here was the title Cockwork. But with a cast this fantastic, even the for-

50 APRIL 13, 2012

mulaic sex will have you breaking into “Singin’ in the Rain” as you get your jollies. ROD: I went over to the “hairy side layer” to watch furry Tom Wolfe and Heath Jordan have at each other. Dressed exactly alike, these guys look like they’re fucking themselves. My favorites would have been flip-floppers Jesse Santana (crowned Mr. International Escort and Best Body 2012 at the Hookies last month) and Cavin Knight if Marc Dylan hadn’t been so fucking hot getting his ass spanked and eaten by D.O. MANUEL: Dylan is a sweet Southern boy with a killer body and impressive deep-throating skills. I wouldn’t mind being strapped into a chair with my eyes held forcibly open by wire contraptions and subjected to hours of watching him get fucked.
