Good Breeding vs. Bad Breeding With PrEP in thE PicturE, should gay Porn loosEn uP about barEbacking?

hile the FDA was considering approving Truvada as a method for preventing new HIV infections, it’s doubtful that anyone argued, “Think of all the awesome-sauce bareback porn that could be made again!” Still, that’s exactly what seems to be happening. The demand for condom-free porn has grown so overwhelmingly that at least one studio, Falcon, is spending time and money to digitally erase any visible signs of latex, and big-name producers like Michael Lucas, a formerly outspoken advocate for safer sex onscreen, are now making bareback videos. “Porn customers have been clear that they prefer bareback,” says rawTop, a New Yorker who maintains several websites that feature bareback porn and that also chronicle his own condom-less exploits. “I honestly don’t understand why some studios use condoms. To me, it just seems to be some sort of respect for the people who they knew who died of AIDS back in the day. I get that, but between the rapid tests available at local pharmacies and PrEP, there’s practically zero risk of HIV transmission in bareback porn these days if either the studio or the models follow a few simple steps.”

WORKING NIGHTLIFE’S TOTEM POLE CONT.

In fact, Lucas, who has been on PrEP since 2013, did an interview with Queerty.com in March discussing his decision to begin shooting bareback scenes. He felt that between HIV-negative models’ PrEP regimen, and effective treatments for positive performers, the danger of transmission has been lowered significantly. Plus, demand is up. “Like every business, we have to listen to our

“Porn customers have been clear that they prefer bareback.” customers,” he noted. “No one has unsubscribed from our site because we moved to condom-less sex; on the contrary, we immediately gained customers.” Asked whether he felt that men learn sexual behaviors from porn, Lucas replied: “I don’t think that men go to porn for life lessons. They just want to get off. And we want to help them [with that].” That answer doesn’t sit so well with me. Bareback porn does encourage some people to ditch condoms in their actual sex lives. Several HIV-positive men under the age of 24 attest that a steady flow of bareback porn helped shape their erotic lives to the point that it proved irresistible. “Hey, if a party’s going on, why am I missing out?” says one. Last year, U.S. News and World Report reported that, according to the CDC, half of today’s college-age gay males will be HIV-positive by the time they are 50 if new infections continue at their current trajectory. Bareback porn has to be a contributing factor. “A fair number of guys told me back in the day that Treasure Island’s Dawson was their role model,” rawTop says, “and they went from being casual bareback bottoms to ‘cumdumps’ who seek out bathhouses and sex parties where they can take multiple loads in a night.” Yet some argue that images of bareback sex hold no more influence over individuals’ behaviors than horror movies or violent video games, which have been blamed for school shootings. However, bareback sex is pleasurable, not inher-

Got Gay-tention Deficit Disorder? Did Madonna bring a gingerbread Downton Abbey to Lincoln Center for New York Fashion Week? Read on…

1

Televangelist Pat Robertson doesn’t seem to get that gays come from heterosexual parents, insisting that we homos will “die out” because we can’t reproduce.

2

Father Christmas has been good to the gays this year! In December alone we got full-frontals from Ben Affleck, Most Valuable Gay™ NeIL PaTrIcK harrIs, and the Warwick Rowers!

Whenever you’re feeling blue, whenever life gets you down, remember: at least you’re not that guys who spent $150,000 to look like a KIm KardashIaN doll that got damaged in a fire.

which we’re assuming is some kind of magical STI—is totally safe for the gays.

New York Fashion Week is on the move again. This February’s Fall/Winter 2015 shows will be the last at Lincoln Center.

6

Because anti-vaccination nut jobs were worried they weren’t a big enough joke, the group Vacutruth recently suggested on its Facebook page that vaccines could turn your kids into homos.

Maybe if we’re really good, next year Martha will bring her Downton Abbey gingerbread house to our office Christmas party! Obviously madoNNa wasn’t overreacting at all when she compared the leak of 13 unreleased tracks to rape and terrorism via Instagram. Did anyone else momentarily wonder if the whole North Korea / The Interview thing was some kind of elaborate James FraNco “art” stunt?

According to HARRY POTTER author J.K. Rowling, Hogwarts—

ently sociopathic. Taking HIV and other STIs out of the equation, sex without condoms is perfectly natural. Sadly, HIV and other STIs like Hepatitis C and drug-resistant gonorrhea are a reality. When AIDS amounted to a death sentence, most porn producers made condoms mandatory in their films in an effort to eroticize safer sex, to make it more enticing. Isn’t it reasonable to assume that bareback scenes do the opposite?

Most in need of a drink: Your Gay DD editor! We’re taking the holidays off. See you January 9!!

All that said, medical evidence shows that PrEP, if taken daily, offers a whole new layer of protection against HIV, as does successful treatment for HIVpositive individuals. For myself and for others, the priority is reducing new HIV infections. Instead of an industry ban on bareback sex and mass return to the eroticization of latex, having performers on PrEP and speaking about it may be the way to go. N

HARD TIMES, HARD RAIN A Hard Rain probes the state of Greenwich Village leading up to the Stonewall Riots.

PHOTO: LINA KROGH

cclaimed British drama A Hard Rain makes its American debut at the Theater for the New City on January 6. Set in Manhattan during the summer of 1969, the play portrays the days leading up to the June 28 Stonewall Riots that sparked the modern gay rights movement. Unlike most Stonewall-era period pieces, however, A Hard Rain is set a few doors down from the historic bar in an unnamed Mafia-run dive. Stocked with a colorful cast of quick-witted queers, corrupt cops, and nefarious “businessmen,” the drama is as much about the rising tensions within the Village’s LGBT community as it is about Nixon-era Manhattan and the personal journeys and struggles of its residents. “We wanted to look at what life was like for the LGBT community at that time and how everything was pushed underground with Mafia-run bars,” says British playwright Martin Hooper. “The idea of writing a play that had a strong drag queen at its heart was also appealing,” adds co-writer Jon Bradfield. “There’s an inherent sense of fun there.” The drag queen in question is Ruby. Played with high heels and heartbreaking charisma by Carson Alexander, Ruby is a Vietnam War vet who was discharged for homosexual proclivities. Still a soldier at heart, he takes his anger to Christopher

Street and acts as one of the many to kindle equality’s flame. “He came here, and he did not give up,” says director Michael Luggio. “He would fight. He would stand up to the police. He would stand up to the mob.” “Ruby is volatile and funny. He gets into fights, he performs, he takes risks, and he is enormously flawed,” says Bradfield. “I love seeing big, memorable characters on stage. You want to see someone bigger than yourself.” A bar regular, Ruby befriends other patrons like a single mother named Angie (Xandra Leigh Parker) and a 16-year-old gay hustler named Jimmy (Teo Rapp-Olsson). Luggio says that it’s the characters’ loneliness that ties them together and fuels their desire for community and connection. Together, they make an alternative family under the dive’s rust-orange lights. “Everybody wants something better. They’re all lost and they’re all alone, and they’re trying to find their way,” Luggio says. Their way ends in tragedy, but A Hard Rain’s plot is not overly moralizing or sentimental. Rather, it’s an grounded depiction of these characters and their truth. The production impresses as a unique and intimate take on an incredible time in our collective history. —Benjamin Lindsay

STEPHEN SHORE’S REVITALIzATION OF COLOR PHOTOGRAPHY MADE HIM A REFERENCE POINT FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS THE WORLD OVER. A NEW COLLECTION HIGHLIGHTS HIS bEST WORKS OF THE LAST 50 YEARS.

tephen Shore is among the most influential photographers of his generation, and with Survey, he finally gets the career-spanning retrospective he deserves. Shore is known best for utilizing rich, tasteful colors while documenting mid-to-late 20th century Americana. Capturing sedate moments of the everyday, famed collections like American Surfaces (1973) and Uncommon Places (1981) sizzle with a Warholian vibrancy previously unseen outside the realm of pop art. The comparison is not misplaced. At an impressionable 17, Shore began frequenting Andy Warhol’s Factory to document the space and its creators. “I was attracted to [Warhol’s] vision or attitude because there

S

8 DECEMBER 26, 2014

was some similarity,” Shore says. “[Warhol] took pleasure in the culture. He was just amazed at how things just are. It struck a chord that may have already existed in me.” It was Shore’s own amazement in the surrounding world that led him to photography in the first place. His sober, formal depictions of American life, all its walks of life and colors of collar, expose not just a keen eye for beautifying the ordinary, but a dedicated one. Survey’s content spans from the American heartland to the heart of Manhattan, but its nucleus is the commercialized domesticity that makes our culture tick. Comprising six decades’ worth of images, Survey makes a triumphant addition to the American coffee table. —BL

3.HOMBRES LOUNGE 5. LUCHO’S CLUB 38-19 69th St (@ 38th St), Woodside, 718-424-9181. ”Lucho’s is for the more adventurous, as it is a walk to Woodside and potentially more intimidating. When I lived in the area this bar was the butchest of the lot. The last time I was there it seemed to have ‘trans’itioned. So it is anyone’s guess what will be happening when you get there, but I guarantee whatever it is is real and worth checking out.”

85-28 37th Ave (btwn 85th/86th Sts), Jackson Heights, hombreslounge.com. “When I met Gio, the owner, he was bartending at Friends Tavern. He’s been running Hombres for years now. It is a bit out of the way, but worth the trek. Hombres raises the stakes. It has the high-energy feeling of a big club in a smaller space. There’s a dance floor at the back with a smoke machine and light show and go-go dancers on the bar.”

4. CLUB EVOLUTION 76-19 Roosevelt Ave (btwn 76th/77th Sts), Jackson Heights, eclubnyc.com. “Previously called Club Atlantis—and Atlantis 2010 before that—Club Evolution is the ‘club’ in the neighborhood, and all that that implies, located right in the center of the bar crawl. The children line up on the weekends, and there is a cover. I generally prefer the smaller bars, but if it beckons to you, you should check it out. Best late.”

78-11 Roosevelt Ave (btwn 78th/79th Sts), Jackson Heights, 718-397-7256. “‘There’s Always Time for Friends’ reads the awning—and it’s true! It’s similar to Music Box but farther from the train, so it has more of a neighborhood bar feel. Unlike Music Box, there is a small dance floor at the back of the bar, which is utilized more as the night goes on. You may catch a drag show, or you may not. But either way it will be friendly and fun.”

6. TAQUERIA COATZINGO is the best Mexican restaurant in the area, serving tacos, tortas, as well as full dinners, well into late night. So good you want to punch someone in the face! But don’t.
