The Role of the Gay Teacher GLSEN SAYS LGBT MENTORS IN HIGH SCHOOL ARE ESSENTIAL. ONE GAY HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER REFLECTS ON THE ROLE HE PLAYS IN HIS STUDENTS’ LIVES.

was in my first year of teaching in rural Massachusetts the first time it happened. Chris, a 15-year-old sophomore in my class, asked if he could speak with me after school. He wasn’t a great student, so I figured his parents had finally gotten on his case about the missing work affecting his grade. When he came into my classroom later that afternoon, he sat in silence at the desk across from me. I asked if everything was okay. He said it wasn’t. He stared at me for another minute or so, his mouth opening and closing silently. I told him that he could tell me anything he needed to. Finally, he said it: “I’m gay.” “Oh,” I said. “Do you want to talk about it?” For the next hour, Chris filled me in on what he was struggling with: coming out to his strict Irish Catholic parents and deciding how to ask a boy he liked out on a date. At the end of our talk, I asked Chris why he chose to come to me—after all, he didn’t seem to particularly enjoy English and we’d never spoken outside of class before. “You’re just the only gay guy I know,” he said and walked out. While I’ve never made a point of coming out to my students, I’ve never re-

ally hid the fact that I’m gay either. I’ve seen other LGBT colleagues go to great lengths to “mask” (or rather, “masc”) even the most mundane details of their personal lives by using genderneutral pronouns and the like, but I’ve never felt any shame in my students’ knowing I’m gay. In the same way that straight teachers don’t hesitate in wearing their wedding bands or placing pictures of their families on their desks, I’ve never hesitated from referencing old boyfriends or loving Mean Girls and Taylor Swift. The more intuitive students tend to pick up on these indicators immediately, and it generally makes the gossip rounds from there. In October, the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network recently released their biennial report detailing a questionnaire completed by American LGBT students on the state of school culture in the U.S. The results showed that in some instances, life for LGBT students has improved, particularly in regards to the use of homophobic slurs and phrases like, “That’s so gay.” While GLSEN’s results are somewhat encouraging, they also report that 85 percent of LGBT students were verbally harassed in the 2013–2014 school year and that 30 percent missed at least one school day in the past month because they felt unsafe or uncomfortable. GLSEN also indicates that students in these hostile school environments are more likely to suffer from lower self-esteem and lower GPAs. They are also less likely to go to college. As an openly gay educator, I find those statistics sobering. However, the lives of LGBT students can be drastically improved when they recognize supportive staff in their schools, the survey says. Over 96 percent of students were able to identify at least one staff member supportive of LGBT students. Nearly 39 percent were able to identify 11 or more supportive

staff members. It’s a pool that I’m proud to be a part of. Those students with a supportive adult network are nearly twice as likely to feel safe at school, are less likely to miss school, are more likely feel connected to their school community, and are more likely to attend college. Although it’s not always easy to be the “gay” teacher at school, the fact is, my visibility is important. To be an effective

The GLSEN survey certainly reflects that. Although Chris was the first student to seek me out, he hasn’t been the last. This year, I moved to a new school where I coadvise the Gay-Straight Alliance, a group of about 30 students that gather weekly to eat cookies and argue about topics relevant to today’s LGBT youth and its larger community. High school is a time to learn about yourself as much as math and science, and I’m proud to have a hand in both educations. At 24, the concerns my LGBT students have already make me feel ancient and dated, but I go home happy with the knowledge that rather than panicking about being found out for being gay, students like Chris are instead drafting texts and quelling crush-induced butterflies for the cute boy from class. As a Minneapolis sex worker from 2005– 2010, Fredrickson documented his experiences, capturing Polaroids of clients, colleagues, and himself. It is ultimately not an exploration of sexual titillation, but human connection. —BL

ew York’s gay nightlife scene has always been a breeding ground for new talent, from designers like Jeremy Scott and the Blondes to bands like Scissor Sisters and artists like Keith Haring. And let’s not forget the super star queens. Covergirl Dusty Ray Bottoms (p.12) is the kind of performer who just might have what it takes to rival major drag talents like RuPaul and Bianca Del Rio. Meanwhile, 22-year-old theater wunderkind Srda Vasiljevic (p.15) is already making his mark on Broadway. For this year’s Who’s Next issue, we’re also venturing beyond the usual Manhattan hangs to the wilds of Bushwick to profile a fierce new band (Bottoms, p.14) and an up-and-coming designer with a particular point of view (Bcalla, p.16). And we’re even heading as far afield as rural Maryland to introduce you to an accessories designer (Stevie Boi, p.13) who’s already gotten the attention of Lady Gaga and Rihanna. These are the names to know in 2015.

DUSTY RAY BOTTOMS f I can look like a lollipop with a nice big head and a stick body, that is the perfect goal of the night,” says Dusty Ray Bottoms. “[My look is] different each night, but as long as it falls under the umbrella of ‘Dusty,’ I’m pretty experimental.” Sitting for a Thursday evening chat at Next Magazine‘s Soho offices, 27-year-old Dustin Rayburn is in full “Dusty” mode, his face painted a porcelain white and heavily contoured with icy blue—think Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride meets Snow Miser. When she first started doing drag last January, Dusty says she was clueless when it came to makeup. But thanks to YouTube tutorials by the late Maddox Madison, she’s cut her prep time from four hours to 90 minutes. That’s perhaps what’s most surprising about Dusty: the speed with which her drag career has taken off. In less than a year, she’s gone from out-of-work musical theater performer to fulltime, self-sustaining New York City queen. Her success in the last year is thanks in no small part to Paige Turner and Justin Luke’s So You Think You Can Drag. Dusty went into this fall’s competition hoping to launch a full time drag career, and although she ultimately placed second, it seems she’s living that dream, after all. Her background in musical theater allows her to blow audiences away with a mix of live vocals and electrifying lip sync performances at regular gigs around the city including Drag Brunch at

Shadowboxers with Sir Honey Davenport, and she’s been nominated for Breakthrough Artist in the 16th Annual Glam Awards. Dusty’s overnight success hasn’t been limited to New York nightlife either. She was recently cast in a walk-on role in Martin Scorsese’s still-untitled rock ’n’ roll drama for HBO. Details about the upcoming series are hushed, but Dusty says her scene has her in full drag, smoking a cig, and watching one guy suck another guy off. “Making mom proud, y’know?” she quips. “It’s not porn, it’s HBO!” On set, Dusty met Brooklyn queen Daphne Sumtimez and soon after the pair partnered up for the December 18 launch of Dusty’s first weekly solo show, Dusted at Bar-tini. “I really wanted to try to bring the Brooklyn crowd up to Hell’s Kitchen,” she says. “I have my hand in a lot of things, so I wanted to take this opportunity to maybe pull some groups together and bring something new.” That “something new” is featured in the Bar-ini show’s second act, when newbie queens are invited to get on the Dusted stage for impromptu performances. It’s Dusty’s way of looking out for newcomers wanting more exposure. “I wouldn’t have been as successful as I am now if I didn’t have people looking out for me,” Dusty says. “You’ve gotta look out for each other.” —Benjamin Lindsay

STEVIE BOI tevie Boi’s sunglasses are not for the timid: larger-thanlife mesh visors, beaded specs, geometric shades embellished with all kinds of spikes, studs, and chains. “My motto is ‘live life fearlessly,’ and that’s the way I look at my aesthetic,” the 25-year-old designer says. “I have stuff someone’s grandmother can wear, but I want to appeal to the person who wants to be seen, especially being a gay man. I want to appeal to people who want to be bold.” And, true to his word, Stevie Boi’s shades have been worn by boldface names like Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, and Elton John—the sort of celebrities who aren’t afraid to take risks when it comes to their work as well as their fashion. The quintessential military brat, Steven Cordell Casablanca Strawder—named for his father’s favorite movie (Casablanca) and his mother’s favorite actor (Steven Seagal)—grew up all over the world: from a farm in Georgia to Germany, Paris, and London. But he considers Maryland home. As an artistically inclined gay African-American teen in a predominantly white high school in Bel Air, Md., Strawder made a name for himself on MySpace with his youthful experiments in music and fashion. “I was desperate to be a celebrity,” he says. But it wasn’t until he started making his own custom sunglasses that his talent as a designer really began to take

shape. “People started to buy them off of my face,” Strawder says. “Literally, just walking down the street to the club. It became a thing locally in Baltimore where people wanted to wear my sunglasses.” In 2009 he officially launched his label, SB Shades, catching the attention of his future mentor, Vogue Japan editor-atlarge and creative consultant Anna Dello Russo. His 2013 World AIDS Day sunglasses for Macy’s sold out within a week. This year, Strawder is poised for even bigger success. He’ll be launching an exclusive collaboration with H&M later this year, a collection of eyewear, accessories, T-shirts and sweaters. In February, he’ll show his “Fall/Winter/Summer/Spring 2016” collection at New York Fashion Week. And on January 19, his reality series, All Eyes on Stevie, which documents the creation of both collections, premieres on Dream Nation TV. The 2016 collection, which he’s titled “Cr3am,” also marks a transition for Stevie Boi. “It’s going to be very different for me,” Strawder says. “This is actually going to be a challenge.” The allwhite range of sunglasses and clothing is his attempt to allow the brand to mature. Strawder says he’d eventually like to design red-carpet gowns for an elite clientele of celebrities. But that doesn’t mean he’s forsaking his bold aesthetic. “The eyewear is always gonna be out there!” —John Russell

BOTTOMS nly in 2015 could a band on the rise consist of “two shitty drag queens, a 303, and a drummer,” as Brooklyn trio Bottoms so elegantly describe themselves. The band—comprised of lead singer Jake Dibeler, 26; keyboardist and sound effects man Simon Leahy, “30something”; and drummer Michael Prommasit, 28—are poised to take their New York hype global this year. Bottoms formed either out of Bushwick art space Secret Project Robot—home to the annual drag festival Bushwig, which Leahy co-founded—or out of Brooklyn’s alternative queer art scene, depending on which member you ask. “We came directly out of the drag/queer scene,” says Leahy. “I wrote ‘Boring’ about the drag scene and about people being boring.” On the track in question, Dibeler screeches about all the things he finds boring: your makeup, sex appeal, Los Angeles, your penis. It’s a song that could easily come off as whiny, but Dibeler’s anger and Bottoms’ riotous electroclash soundscape turn it into pure punk defiance. The band’s stage presence helps fuel that fire, with Dibeler and Leahy donning wigs, makeup, dresses, and blackout contact lenses for shows. “I’m not really interested in being a drag queen,” explains Dibeler, sponging clown-white onto his face and squeezing his feet into a pair of nude pumps. “I’m

O

more interested in playing with gender, maintaining my masculinity while being feminine.” Bottoms’ sound is rooted in gay disco, with elements of punk, metal, and electronica. Their songs hit you like a line of ketamine blown by a drag queen at a renegade party. The lyrics are dark, as Bottoms—and primary lyricist Dibeler in particular—are interested in the more shadowy aspects of gay life: disease, sex, soured relationships. Dibeler finds the contrast between the lyrical intensity and the music itself hilarious. “I’m really into that,” he says. “People dancing to my suicide note.” The new year will see Bottoms release an E.P., play shows at South by Southwest, premiere their first music video, tour Europe, and potentially release a full-length album—and it all happened by chance. With a free space to perform at Secret Project Robot and a sound engineer friend, they decided to record their E.P. Goodbye on a whim. “We recorded it, and then we didn’t have any plans to do anything with it, and then JD Samson messages us and is like, ‘Hey, let’s talk,’” Dibeler says. Soon the band was signed to Samson’s fledgling label, Atlas Chair Records, and Goodbye is on its way to a January 20 release. It’s what anyone would consider an exciting time for Bottoms. But even in a flaxen wig and taupe skirt, Dibeler’s delivery is deadpan. “It’s going to be a whirlwind of sad gay music.” —Mark Dommu

SRDA VASILJEVIC rda Vasiljevic is a director to the stars while his own star is rising. A handsome 22-year-old, Vasiljevic has been reaping the fruits of New York City since his winter 2013 move here, landing work on Broadway alongside some of the industry’s biggest names. His road to the Great White Way was a long one, but now that he’s there, you can bet he’s never turning back. Born in Sarajevo in December 1991, mere months before the Bosnian War ravaged the nation, Vasiljevic spent his early childhood with his family in refugee camps. After applying for housing in the U.S., they were placed in Des Moines, Iowa— “the metropolis of the Midwest!” he jokes. “Coming from a refugee background, I grew up with this sense that the only way to preserve and maintain your stories is to tell them,” Vasiljevic says. “Because my family lost everything material, those stories were all we had.” In December 2012, renowned theater director Sheryl Kaller attended a production of Spring Awakening that Vasiljevic directed while at Boston’s Emerson College and immediately scooped him up, telling him he had to leave school early to pursue directing in New York. Time moved quickly for Vasiljevic— he left Emerson to direct The Laramie Project Cycle at BAM earlier in the fall of 2012, returned for the spring and fall 2013 semes-

S

ters, and signed his first Broadway contract to assistant direct Mothers and Sons at the Golden Theater that November. Vasiljevic has gone on to work with theater heavyweights like Terrence McNally and Moisés Kaufman. He’s also the youngest member of the Lincoln Center Theater Directors Lab and was named an up-and-coming theater artist by SpeakEasy Stage Company. Currently, he is assisting Tony-winner Billy Porter in directing Ham: A Musical Memoir, which stars Tonynominee Sam Harris and opens January 12. And later this year he’s remounting an industry reading of his wildly successful Boston workshop of Holding the Man. Through his work, Vasiljevic hopes to strengthen the power of the millennial voice in New York theater while further exploring sexuality and gender in his work. “These subjects are such pertinent issues in our current social consciousness,” he says. “Sexuality is a gradient we don’t fully understand, and theater is a way to explore this incredible unknown.” With work on the Broadway-bound production of The Visit and a new musical workshop based on Brave New World, Vasiljevic isn’t slowing down. “Theater is a way to start so many different conversations,” he says. “In my work I want to ask questions and show a different slice of every confusing, multifaceted realm.” —Cameron Keady

BCALLA n a brightly lit Brooklyn studio, designer Bradley Callahan, a.k.a. Bcalla, is shooting the shit with his airbrush artist, CJ Cureton. His most recent collection is full of pieces with his signature creatures scrawled all over them, either in blackand-white or airbrushed in vibrant colors. The collection has already become incredibly popular with the more stylistically adventurous names in New York nightlife, who were some of Callahan’s earliest and most dedicated customers and muses. It also has a more notorious fan: Lady Gaga. Gaga’s former stylist Hayley Pisaturo started pulling Bcalla looks for the pop star’s ArtRave tour, and soon Callahan met the “Applause” singer’s current stylist, Brandon Maxwell. In November, a string of paparazzi photos of Gaga in the most recent Bcalla collection, along with a video of her rehearsing in a black-and-white piece, surfaced online. “It’s really surreal,” says Callahan. “Especially because most of the time [with celebrities] it’ll be custom-ordered stuff, so they need it and I’m making something that’s not really in relation to my brand. But then [Gaga] wore this current collection, these really personal things. It’s really weird.” That collection is “Drawing Is Fun,” which debuted on Bcalla’s Instagram this fall. “It was all about drawing, and how everything starts from me doing a really simple line drawing

and then gets made into this crazy Technicolor thing. Everything was hand drawn in the collection with Sharpies.” Callahan had started doing hand-drawn T-shirts as prizes for a Drag Race screening he hosts in Brooklyn, and the collection grew out of that. This kind of creativity rooted in his community exemplifies Callahan’s career. As a student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, he began designing looks for his friends. When Callahan moved to New York in 2010, the emerging underground queer scene downtown and in Brooklyn began to heavily influence him, as he designed for performers and personalities like Big Dipper, La’Fem Ladosha, and Contessa Stuto of Cunt Mafia. It was Stuto who chose Bcalla pieces when she was styling Azealia Banks’ Japanese tour, and Banks has been a supporter ever since, wearing custom looks in two of her recent videos, “Heavy Metal and Reflective” and “Chasing Time.” Bcalla is characterized by outrageous, cartoonish sexiness. That means bodies on display, loud colors power-clashing in the same pieces, sexy cutouts, and spandex galore. Bcalla looks are designed for “attention seekers,” according to the designer. Callahan is looking to expand his brand in 2015 with bigger production runs and more accessibility. “Growth is the key word.” In February, he’ll debut a new collection, and while he’s very secretive about it, he can reveal one thing. “It’s definitely sexy.” —MD

am really interested in performativity and the construction of personality and persona and character and how that [may] be used to create and call attention to identity,” says American Realness curator and producer Ben Pryor. The festival’s sixth season kicks off January 8, and Pryor promises a lineup that includes plenty of experimental queer art. And while the works and artists featured in the annual performance festival are each unique, there are some underlying themes this year, like “this meta-administration thing,” says Pryor. “There are a few works that all focus on the administrative realities of making work as subject matter and content in the piece.” Check out our picks for some of the festival’s can’t-miss queer performances, including pieces that look at queer ritual and spectacle, and explorations of the self in relationship to others. —MD

PHOTO: STEVEN DE LA CRUZ

WITTI REPARTEE’s second annual “Broads, Bawds, and Bachelorettes,” presented by the Imperial Court of New York, will be a royal affair. “Last year, I was the Dowager Empress of New York and about to get married, so I threw the Dowager’s bachelorette Party, which raised over $3,000 for women living with HIV at Iris House,” Repartee explains. “It’s going to be a fun night of live singing, storytelling, burlesque, and more, and once again, is a fundraiser for the women at Iris House.” Repartee has a fabulous cast of guest stars joining her onstage, including co-host Cherry Pitz, Ermine Muff, Dandy Darkly, and the current Mr. Eagle, Boy Laney, among others. At the show, each performer is “carefully curating their own material around the broads, bawds, and bachelorette themes,” Repartee says. The show will be opening with a number from The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. What’s more, “Dandy Darkly will be bringing one of his stories of bawdy love from his latest show, ‘Pussy Panic!’, which will be returning to New York in the Frigid Festival later this winter. We’ve got an upbeat and campy list of performers. There’s sure to be some broadway. There’s almost certainly going to be some rock, some twists on old favorites, and some classics of cabaret.” Repartee’s show will help launch audiences into 2015 “in a feelgood celebration of those things we all love best: lusty lasses, buxom babes, and classy courtesans! My shows have always had a great blend of material and a great flow, and I am so excited about this talented cast of performers. For those people who do need to come down from the holidays, I can promise that there won’t be a single goddamned Christmas carol on the stage! 2015 is the middle of a decade, and we’re going to ring it in with sequins and songs!”
