Nextsense as a Symantec Gold Partner and holder of the Enterprise Security specialization was part of the Symantec Security Roadshow that took place in Budapest, on 1st March 2011. Georgian ICT Development and Cyber Security Event GITI 2010 Igor Andonovski, Nextsense COO was a speaker at the Georgian ICT Development and Cyber Security Event GITI 2010. The event took place in Tbilisi, Georgia, from the in November 2010. The major topics of the Conference were IT-Solutions for the public sector and Cyber Security. Mr. Andonovski with his presentation “ICT a Driver for Improving Democracy”” presented the Nextsense experience in developing e-Democracy solutions as well as the success stories of the Macedonian e-Parliament solution and the Albanian e-cabinet solution.

Nextsense presentation at e-Society.mk Conference The topic of the Sixth International Conference e-Society.Mk was “e-Government for Increased Efficiency and Transparency”. The conference, held in December, attended by 200 participants from Macedonia and abroad, addressed the role of e-Government systems in increasing efficiency and transparency of the public administration. Nextsense participated in the second working session “Local e-Government: Opportunities and Challenges” with the presentation “e-Municipality – challenges and obstacles” by Igor Andonovski, Nextsense COO.

Driven by the successful implementation of IT Mark and being aware of the importance of implementation of various standards, Nextsense takes part in various seminars, workshops and conferences concerning this subject. We are proud to announce that our colleague Miss Daniela Gavrilovska, Support Account Manager was part of The 5th itSMF SEE Regional Event in Belgrade, with a presentation on How to implement a valuable ITSM System with effective Service Desk? The 2011 Moldova ICT Summit gathered together industry stakeholders from Government, the Moldovan business community, multinational companies, and academia to discuss international and national trends and challenges facing the ICT industry.

Mr. Kronevski visits Symantec’s Executive Business Centre Mr. Vasko Kronevski, as a CEO of one of the biggest Symantec partners in the South East Europe region, had a great honour to be part of the visit to Symantec’s Executive Business Centre (EBC), based in USA, Mountain View – Silicon Valley. Symantec executives and experts were gathered there from 15th to 22th October 2010 on a conference for the most valuable customers and partners from Hungary, Romania and South-Eastern Europe. With this exclusive program the attendees learned about the dynamics of worldwide security and availability markets, the new developments and trends and the best practices at Symantec’s global clients. On this exclusive event, the attendees had an opportunity to meet Mr Enrique Salem, CEO and chairman of Symantec, who held one hour session and hosted the roundtable discussion about the future of IT.

THESE ARE THE MAIN CONCLUSIONS THAT WERE BROUGHT AT THE E-DEMOCRACY CONFERENCE 2010: • Macedonia has a very big advantage in implementing ICT in the public institutions compared to the countries in the region. The Macedonian positive experiences regarding the implementation of e-government solutions should be used as an example for the other countries in the region. • New ICT technologies, especially social networking should be used for empowering citizens to take action in representative democracy. Capitalize on the benefits of ICT to function effectively, to interact with the public, and to collaborate with other public institutions around the world.

BACKGROUND The e-Democracy Conference 2010 addressed from both the policy and technical perspectives, how the use of ICT can help improve democracy, transparency, accountability and effectiveness in the public institutions. The event was co-organized by Nextsense and the Centre for e-Governance Development for South East Europe (CeGD).

STRUCTURE AND TOPICS OF THE CONFERENCE The program of the conference was structured around three core work-streams: • ICT in legislative knowledge management

THE E-DEMOCRACY CONFERENCE 2010 ADDRESSED FROM BOTH THE POLICY AND TECHNICAL PERSPECTIVES, HOW THE USE OF ICT CAN HELP IMPROVE DEMOCRACY, TRANSPARENCY, ACCOUNTABILITY AND EFFECTIVENESS IN THE PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS.

• How ICT can transform the work of parliament and government • Parliament and Democracy in the Twenty-first century The conference included two panel sessions, one for the parliaments and Governments and one for the Official Journals as well as three case study presentations about e-government solutions successfully implemented by Nextsense: • The e-Parliament solution in the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia, • The e-cabinet system in the Government of Albania and • The legislative management system in the Official Journal of the Republic of Macedonia.

CONFERENCE CONCLUSIONS AND FINAL REMARKS The advancement of the Information Society calls for the involvement of diverse stakeholders, including international organizations; governments, parliaments and other public institutions; the private sector; academia and the civil society. Our aim is to integrate these stakeholders and develop a knowledge sharing platform that will enable us to continuously exchange experiences and thoughts about the e-Democracy enhancement in the region.

• Permanent regional cooperation and share of vision is essential for e-Democracy. The SEE region has a unique e-Participation potential in relation to the Western Europe. When we say that the public institutions should collaborate between themselves, we do not only mean collaboration between institutions in the same country, but also regional collaboration that would provide exchange of experiences and good practices. This e-Democracy Conference is an example of how public institutions, politicians, policy makers, experts from international organizations, academia and business can be gathered in order to engage in dialog on the role that ICT can play in improving democracy. • Institutions shall build social trust, transparency and accountability. All public institutions should be transparent and accountable in their work by providing to citizens not just general information about the institution but also more specific documents and information concerning legislation, budget, activities of members etc. • Transformational government (citizen-centricity, skills). e-Participation is not a choice: e participation will happen whether you like it or not. A government’s only choice is whether to react defensively to it, or to engage pro-actively in ways which create public value. • Planning and management are very important for successful implementation of e-Democracy. The public institutions should have a long term vision about their development and based on that vision they should develop a strategic plan with included schedules, milestones and resource allocation (human, financial, internal, external etc.) • Having the necessary political will and commitment is crucial for the successful implementation of e-Democracy. Democracy and ICT themselves are not enough to realize the vision about making public institutions transparent, accountable and accessible unless there is somebody that can carry out that vision and provide the necessary support and leadership for the implementation of that vision.

2011 Inspiring: It was an honour for me to speak in the name of Microsoft before such a distinguished group of leaders from governments, national assemblies, international groups and nongovernmental organizations. The most advanced level of an e-government strategy is to put in place popular, efficient and visible and better online services for citizens. E-Governance initiatives such as the e-Democracy Conference, have a particularly significant impact, as they have the effect of enhancing the democratic process and show how ICT can transform the work of parliaments and governments, and are the basis for effective participatory governance.

Purpose: Strengthen the administrative capacity of MEI to:

• Manage the SAA implementation • Perform the NIPAC’s responsibilities • Improve the legal coordination process • Ensure the sustainability of EU related reforms • Improve the inter-ministerial coordination mechanisms

The system for the Approximation of national legislation with EU Acquis is implemented in the Ministry for European Integration in Albania as part of the Support to the Ministry of European Integration of Albania II (SMEI II) project. The overall objective of the project is to support the Albania in implementing the Stabilisation and Association Agreement-SAA and in the preparation of the country for the accession to the European Union. The system for the allocation of the EU acquis to the responsible institutions manages the process of Approximation of the national legislation with European legislation (acquis communitere). This information system is based on the database of the EU legislation which is regularly updated with new and modified EU measures. One of the biggest advantages of the software solution for allocation of the EU legislative measures to the responsible line ministries is its interoperability and the same technology platform as the Nextsense e-Cabinet system.

The essential functions of the Law Approximation Database (LAD) are to: • Store up-to-date information on National and EU legislation; • Store up-to-date information on correlations and compatibility levels between EU and national legal acts; • Serve as a tool to assess, plan and monitor the process of approximation and harmonization of the National and EU legislation; • Have reporting features that would make the process of preparing the NPISAA more eﬃcient;

The core functionalities of the collaboration tool for preparation of the National Plan for Implementation of Stabilization and Association Agreement (NPISAA): • Support team work and collaboration in the process of preparation; • Powerful tool for the coordinators, which enables them to have an up-to-date overview of the process and document status in any given moment (reporting); • Support division and delegation of the work to working groups as well as automatic compilation of the document; • Support ﬂexible assignment and management of the working group members and their roles within the process.

The redesigned inner pages, sub sites and microportals Here we implemented the new branding standards given from the Deutsche Telecom which effect on new user interface, layout and design. Beside that the client decide to integrate all existing portals, mini sites, separate controls and other elements in single portal that will have the possibility to be administrated through web based CMS solution - webBuilder. In the next 3 years Nextsense will work tightly with the customer in order to implement new intuitive e-solutions, promptly update the portal content and bring it to the higher level. The result is that this portal is now the first in the -T- group that combines all services and is completely customer oriented with the same consistent look & feel.

Virtualization story Virtualization has become a very hot topic between the managers of all types, shapes and sizes. Not only IT managers talk about it but all of the “(SELECT*Manager )” population, putting all kinds of tags to it like cutting costs, optimizing services, downsizing the IT, consolidating hardware, achieving dynamic IT etc. This just proves that the techy guys have really successfully sold the virtualization story. Now, as you may all expect, there are a lots of tips’n tricks + “things to be considered & done” for a story to become a true story, especially to become a successful one.

The Ferrari anology

The real question is do you really need a Ferrari or you just need a better vehicle? – Although it’s an icon, not everybody needs it. If you’re into car racing, than you really need one and you will get the

most out of it, cover the costs, multiply on the benefits and bless your choice. But If you only want to have one, just to have it, or because everybody else wants to have it, and use it just to go to work with it, with all of its perfection and performance, be ready to get some serious spending that can be justified only through your public image. Now wait a minute, am I just saying that possessing a Ferrari is a bad thing? NOOO! – actually, it can be one of the best things that can happen to you. I am just saying that if you’ re not cautious and aware enough upfront, it can certainly drain your budget, make your neighbors (your husband/wife included) envy, get you a lot of speeding tickets and certainly implant few sin-full thoughts in your head.

Test driving virtualization The good news is that finally, people start thinking about the virtualization like actually buying a Ferrari. The slight difference between the Ferrari story and the virtualization is that with the virtualization – more or less, everybody can, if not already has, tried one. That’s the top selling point, you can try some of it, on your lap-top, on your home computer, at your lab environment and usually it’s what you see that gets you hot. Imagine – to be able to try a Ferrari in the same way ? So everybody says – Let’s virtualize, let’s virtualize everything, let’s do it today!! Yeah, right!

When talking about virtualization the emotions are like talking about Ferrari – it’s an icon at it least, everybody has heard about it, everybody wants one, and suddenly everybody desperately needs one. You see, possessing a Ferrari is not only about speed, prestige and high adrenaline – it’s a lifestyle. It’s not only the money (well for most of us that’s the first obstacle :)) or image in question but it’s the ability to safely drive it and properly maintain it. The factory in Maranello has its own sports track where potential buyers of their TOP models are brought for drive skills training before they become eligible to buy a Ferrari.

Virtualization – blessing or curse? Although the virtualization may seem quite tempting and straight forward just a scratch under the surface will discover the billion vortexes waiting under the surface.

Successful virtualization story relies on some heavy planning, adequate investment and real dedication. Just like a Ferrari, Virtualization relies on overall quality - quality of the hardware, quality of the virtualization platform, quality of the monitoring & management software, quality of the implementation, quality of everything and just like Ferrari – it won’t take any compromises; serious performance requires seriousness all the way. An intro example, when you lose a virtual Host, you actually lose all of the virtual servers running on it, most likely with all of the services those servers were offering, leading the way to a potential disaster scenario.

So when you jump to conclusion that you should choose virtualization as a solution, take a step back, sit, relax and think again. No! - I don’t say you shouldn’t virtualize, I just say don’t jump to it, cause it will bounce you off. Just be sure to carefully consider all of the aspects of it: pros, cons, partners, consultants, suppliers, SLA’s etc. before you enter the virtualization adventure. Virtualization may be a blessing. If properly planned, implemented, tested, monitored and backed up, it can present unbeatable ROI and become irreplaceable resource of asset consolidation thus multiplying IT benefits. But, if you just “virtualize”, skipping only one of those required steps mentioned above, you’re getting yourself a potential time bomb, simply waiting to go off and get you your nightmares.

Key Factors to be considered HW - servers & blades

Be sure to properly plan the CPU & RAM workloads of your virtual environment. Don’t forget to include the predicted growth. The HW will (most likely) perform as stated in the product sheets, leaving the possibility for mistakes at your own planning side. If You plan to virtualize consider: not having a spare part or taking it eternity to be obtained DOES leave you with not just one failed physical sever, but all of the virtual servers running on that host. So now, the efficiency of the SLA’s with your hardware vendors REALLY gets into play. Just like with the spare parts for your Ferrari, don’t make compromises with the hardware used for virtualization.

Virtualization platform - Hypervisor We are all witnesses of the Hyper-V vs. VMWare battle. There is a thin line that differentiates them one from another. Both of them have their pros and cons. It’s a fact that VMWare has a longer history in the virtualization arena but, Microsoft Hyper-V on the other hand beats it with price and integration with its monitoring and management software. The verdict ? We always go with something that has proved to be invaluable – availability of local experts knowledge and support – that is. In our case Microsoft’s Hyper-V wins the battle.

Storage vendors also evangelize virtualization. Understandingly, the logical choice for the location of all those virtual machines will be – “The storage”. Storage level de-duplication and especially inter storage asynchronous replication usually is the selling tip! Be careful, de-duplication and replication are usually Storage-Vendor proprietary which can be tying in choices making you go all the way with a single storage vendor, and than, once you’re tied to it you find out that their proprietary virtualization High Availability vendor specific software that comes into play besides being priced sky-high doesn’t meet your requirements or has some limitations that were not stated in the selling brochure. Tip- Be sure to know the exact de-duplication and replication capabilities of the storage product you’re about to purchase lined up with your own virtualization de-duplication and replication requirements. One thing that you will find out just as you deploy your first pure Hyper-V host is that it does not provide you with a GUI. What about managing multiple Hyper-V/VMWare hosts or Highly Available Hyper-V/ESX host Farm? The answer to that is deployment of adequate monitoring & management tools, and if they are optimized for Virtual environments the better. One logical answer can be the Microsoft System Center portfolio products (SC Configuration Manager, SC Operations Manager, SC Virtual Machine Manager). In this way you get yourself a unified set of integrated tools for deployment, monitoring, change, control and management of your overall environment. In particular, SCVMM is the management tool that enables you to establish and control all of the aspects of your virtual environment including the live migration of the virtual hosts together with the high availability.

Virtualization – Getting there!

There are many things that should be considered during the planning process and unlike anything until now, virtualization and it’s related technologies take us one step higher in the planning process. With virtualization we can get over the concept of high available hosts and really deep dive into service high availability. The freedom to automatically provision and deploy virtual machines and seamlessly move them over from one host to another make “The server” no longer unit of High Availability measurement, now it’s “The service”. This approach also changes the complete concept of High Availability, Disaster Recovery & Backup strategies. The advanced HA possibilities for host and services, Live migration and performance scalability are just a drop in the sea of possibilities which just work fantastic in “PowerPoint”. Getting them properly configured and working in real life is a “slightly” different story. It takes some real world knowledge and extensive hands-on and experience to get them sidelined with the business requirements and expectations, properly planed and implemented.

hardware and software technologies. Building the right understanding of the HW/SW possibilities is the key to successful virtualization project. So, have your service layout planned upfront which will dictate the required server/service disposition, which will bring you to your HA requirement plan. Clearly state this plan as a requirement in front of your HW, Storage, Software, Service vendors, and ask: Can You do it? Can You guarantee? Most of them will state themselves as “Virtualization Ready” but are they really? Are there things written at the bottom of the page with unreadable small font, usually marked with an asterisk, stating i.e. that you need to buy proprietary monitoring and management software specially priced (read “skyhigh”) if used with virtualization ? Can they provide You with the whole service/server/HA/DR/Backup picture? Have they ever implemented it? Our advice: Just like implementing any technology - It’s always better to consult someone who has already done it, the more the better. Choosing the right virtualization Partner proves to be the most important step in any major virtualization project. Any Questions ?

Can we prevent WikiLeak type of information leakage from our organizations? First WikiLeaks spilled the guts of government. According to Julian Assange, founder of WikiLeaks, now is the turn for the private sector, starting with one major American bank.

WikiLeaks recent priority has clearly been the publication of hundreds of thousands of government documents. Since October WikiLeaks has closed its submissions channel because the site was receiving more documents than it could find resources to publish. Half of those unpublished submissions relate to the private sector. According to Julian Assange, founder of WikiLeaks, they had received damaging, unpublished material from pharmaceutical companies, finance firms, banks and energy companies, just to name a few industries. Can these types of information and data leakage be prevented? Let’s analyze one method used by US Army Private First Class Manning for transferring data to external parties. He walked out the door with bogus Lady GAG CD-RW filled with government secrets. The good news is that there is a straightforward regimen to help stop these kinds of risks. Symantec in its broad portfolio of security solutions offers several solutions that can help in preventing these types of data leakages. In this article we will focus only solutions that would prevent US Army Private First Class Manning from stilling and transferring those documents outside US Army premises. These solutions are only small subset of security solutions and technologies that you can implement in your organization to protect sensitive data leakage.

Control how users use devices attached to their computers Device control, as its name suggests, controls what devices can be used on a given computer. So if you want to disallow CD burning by a government security analyst with access to secret documents, you can do so. Symantec Endpoint Encryption (SEE) Device Control allows this to be done by policy, across the organization. Permissions can be set by group or per individual user. SEE Device Control could even have allowed Pfc. Manning to listen to Lady Gaga MP3 files, but prevented him from copying files of any type to the CD. Here’s how a security administrator could have done that: With SEE Device Control, a security administrator can make the

decision that the use of USB sticks by field engineers who need to download software for clients is okay, but not by customer service agents with access to lots of personal customer information, who never take work home. SEE Device Control policy can be set so prevent any type of Bluetooth or WiFi data transfer, so data cannot be transferred to mobile phones, or other types of storage devices. SEE Device Control also offers some capabilities to facilitate audits and forensics, like creating a log of all files copied or even creating a “shadow copy” in case you want to see what was actually copied down to the device. This would allow investigators to quickly and clearly see the extent of breach perpetrated by an actor like Manning.

Restrict copying documents based on content Some may find device control too coarse grained and want to only restrict copy operations based on content. A great way to do this is with Symantec Data Loss Prevention Endpoint Protect. It also prevents employees from copying confidential data to removable devices, transferring it over the network, or trying to copy or paste, or print it – but with the added ability to do so based on content. The advantage is that employees can, for example, copy pictures of their kids to and from a USB stick, but not anything marked confidential or that matches the fingerprint of a product design document or that contains confidential customer information. Endpoint Prevent leverages the Symantec Data Loss Prevention suite for deep content inspection, so policies on the endpoint can leverage those used for inspection of email traffic

Encrypt Sensitive Documents Obviously, preventing those without a need to know is one of the best ways to protect secrets. The problem, however, is that access control lists on file shares are not vigorously maintained. That means people who should not see documents can do so. Also there is problem when laptops that have sensitive data on them are lost or stolen. The answer is to encrypt those files, so if someone has access to a directory it won’t matter because they won’t be able to read the file. This is exactly what PGP NetShare and Endpoint Encryption from Symantec does. And the user experience really doesn’t change at all. Having a lock on the file or folder is intuitive and likely sends a warning to those looking to steal. The file opens as normal for those with access, and is unreadable by those without. PGP NetShare also protects against mistakes made by those with permissions, for example, by copying top secret documents to the wrong folder. Encryption solves this problem - even if a file is moved to the wrong place, only those with keys can read it. PGP NetShare can also encrypt files by file type. This makes it easy to protect Word docs, Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations, but not MP3 files. We will no doubt be hearing more from WikiLeaks. With such well understood defenses available, CISOs really have no excuse for not putting them in place. Perhaps we’ve been putting too much focus on the criminal syndicates and not enough on the malicious insider.

The ICT market in Macedonia has continuously grown in the past years. Last year the number of employees in the ICT market for the first time was bigger than the number of employees in the communications market.

The results from the research made by MASIT, the Macedonian ICT Chamber of Commerce showed that the IT market in Macedonia, in the period 2009-2011 had a lack of skilled IT professionals trained in Microsoft, Linux, Java and Oracle technologies.

Nextsense is proud to be part of a very important project supported by the Ministry of Information Society and Administration of the Republic of Macedonia and the Employment Service Agency. 80 unemployed people were given the opportunity to receive professional trainings in the most popular IT technologies.

As a certified Microsoft learning provider, Nextsense was among the three chosen companies to deliver the Microsoft trainings for the following packages: MCITP: Server Administrator and MCITP: Microsoft SQL Server 2008, Database Developer 2008. Out of 180 interested candidates, 80 candidates were selected to attend the IT courses based on the preliminary testing. The Microsoft courses were among the most wanted and more than 100 candidates took the preliminary test in order to be part of the 20 trainees for the official Microsoft courses. After the Microsoft trainings finished at the end of January, the candidates took the necessary certification exams that will give them a great chance to become recognized as experts in the market. Nextsense is proud that the candidates showed great interest during the trainings and that most of them successfully passed the certification exams. We hope that with their knowledge, they will be able to find a job in the Macedonian IT market.

Corporate Social Responsibility During the past years Nextsense has significantly broadened and deepened its understanding of the many faces of the Corporate and Social Responsibility. This year we support a very big project that will improve the lives of people with handicap and dysfunctions. The Association “Dajte ni krilja” is formed to support the people with handicap and dysfunctions and provide them better future. The association has started spreading its worthy cause to all people in Macedonia, trying to change the view on the people with handicap and dysfunctions. The aim of the whole project is to make people aware that people with handicap and dysfunctions are not different; they can have social life as normal as it can be to them; they can be equally part of the society; they can work and contribute to themselves and to the people around them.

Nextsense is part of this project by William Ford Jr., Chairman, providing the Ford Motor Co. n e c e s s a r y support to the Association through the design of the web page and social network profiles that will serve as be information pages to all people who are willing to share helpful information to the association members, give advice to the people with handicap and dysfunctions; support them and provide better future for them.

Implementing the children with dysfunctions into the schools is very slow process without special education programs suitable for them. There are few employers who are willing and want to employ people with dysfunctions. Those who do not have anyone close to them, or a caring family, end up in institutions not suitable for their needs, not to speak for those who end up on streets with little or no chance to survive because they have no place to stay nor basic livelihood. The people with handicap should be put on pedestal, cared, respected, loved, accepted and understood. They are here between us and we should not be afraid of them nor avoid them. They are our responsibility, to each of us a bit, and not just to the state; they are the mirror of our social responsibility and solidarity. The sadness, the burden they have is bigger than the fact that we cannot look at them and help because it’s difficult for us to grief over their destiny. We need to give
