Welcome to the ASB Orientation ‘07! It’s the start of a new year and Waikato University is about to take off!
that will have your mates saying at your 40th birthdays ‘Do you remember when you did <insert hilarious debauched incident here> in O’week 07’.
The Waikato Students’ Union (WSU) is proud to bring you just a taste of things to come this year with the ASB Orientation 2007. A week of outlandish games, live performances, comedians, the Trolley Derby (with Miss Trolley Derby competition), Undy 500, theme parties, ZM Big Man on Campus, an orientation record attempt, Student Olympics, HUGE giveaways plus so much more, with big thanks to ASB. This is the week
All the daytime entertainment will take place at the WSU Village Green by the lakes, with the night time entertainment down at the Don Llewellyn on Campus, the student bar on campus. Then after the night’s entertainment you can be bussed in to the after parties, being held at the Bahama Hut on Alexandra Street where the party never ends. We have an Orientation Store at the
WSU Village Green next to STA Travel for the week before and of the ASB Orientation 07 with ALL the information you need in regards to times, prices, tickets, acts, bands, games, prizes, performances, competitions and gear for the social event of the year that is the ASB Orientation 07. You can also go to the WSU Office in the SUB building if you want to know more. There is entertainment for everyone to enjoy, so get out there and have the time of your life. We will see you all at ASB Orientation 2007.

www.nexusmag.co.nz

Fashionably early All Don Llewellyn’s gigs will start early, ie. about 7pm, and wrap up by 11pm. This is to make sure you get to go to everything you want to. So if you don’t want to miss out—and you don’t—get on down there on time. Free buses to town and the Bahama Hut will be available from 10.30 PM after gigs, so check out the music on campus then carry on into town and score more freebies. And there will be lots of freebies. Speaking of freebies There will be fun games around campus throughout the week, scheduled and unscheduled, so keep an eye out. Look out for the ZM Black Thunder for details. Heats are at 1:30 PM every day during ASB Orientation.

Monday 26th Feb
And so it begins. Welcome to Uni, or welcome back. Come along to the WSU Village Green (the lush grassy bit outside the banks/shops) and enjoy a live DJ, crazy games and giveaways. At some random point during the day there will also be a “Do stuff to Bart” where the unfortunate person called Bart will have something done to him. Look out for it. From 10.30 AM - DJ Koops Noon – First Years’ Initiation 1 PM – ASB Orientation Record Attempt 7-11 PM – Beach party at Don Llewellyn’s 11 PM onwards – Beach Party at Bahama Hut.
Noon - First Years’ Initiation
If you’re new to Waikato University, come along and get initiated. According to organisers, this Initiation will involve beer, prizes and a little athleticism – but nothing to be scared of. The number of clothing items worn is entirely up to participants. All initiates will get a free beer (or a non-alcoholic alternative for all you non-drinkers out there – all two of you).
1 PM - ASB Orientation Record Attempt
This is the inaugural Orientation Record Attempt, which is apparently set to become a hotly contested tradition in years to come. Think TV’s ‘Distraction’ and add Weet-bix. And hot stuff. And (possibly) nudity, if you fancy. Well, you never know. The challenges will be timed, with prizes and trophies awarded. Be a part of Waikato student history!
7-11 PM - Beach Party at Don Llewellyn’s Cover charge $2. Dress in your favourite beach styles then carry right on via the free bus to…
11pm – Beach Party at Bahama Hut

Tuesday 27th February Another exciting day of activities beckons. Look out on the WSU Village Green for DJ Koops (10.30), live performances, a graffiti artist and wood sculpture. Not to mention the random event “Do stuff to Bart”. 11.15 AM – Wood sculpting kicks off 12.30 PM – Hell Of A Pizza Competition 2.10 PM – Live performance by GISH 7-11 PM – Comedy Gala at Don Llewellyn’s 11 PM onwards – Back to School Party at Bahama Hut.
12.30 PM - Hell Of A Pizza Competition
Want a year’s supply of Hell pizzas? Of course you do. Who wouldn’t? To get your saucy hands on them, you’ll have to enter the Hell Of A Pizza competition and eat your heart out. This is limited to 32 participants, so sign up early – at the very least, it’s a free lunch. There’ll be 4 heats, with the overall fastest 4 eaters going through to the final. If you don’t, you’ll be regretting it next week when your tummy’s rumbling.
2.10 PM – Live performance by GISH
JUSTIN HANSEN , better known as GISH is one of the most popular comedians on the NZ PRO COMEDY CIRCUIT with a wicked combination of original and popular song parodies and a healthy toke of comedy for the the bro’s. A 2006 BILLY T COMEDY AWARD NOMINEE, Gish has turned his song writing talents to comedy providing a unique alternative amongst his fellow standups. GISH made his PULP COMEDY debut last year and had continued to feature at The Classic and around the North Island. His songs ‘THE JOINT’, ‘STINK BRO’ and “NOTHING BETTER TO DO” have all held tops spots in the NZ COMEDY charts on mp3. For more Gishy goodness, check out www.comedy.co.nz.
7-11 PM - Comedy Gala at Don Llewellyn’s
Elmo, the organiser of all these fun events, reckons this is one of his top events for the week. “Bring the Bernina as your sides will need stitching!” He also personally guarantees that if any of the jokes are as bad as that one, you can hurl (frozen) tomatoes at him. Important – tickets for this show are limited, so buying an ASB Orientation Pack with entrance to everything is the best way to make sure of your place at the gala.
7–11 PM - Free Dance Party outside Don Llewellyn’s 11 PM – Back to School Party at Bahama Hut Bust out your uniforms and turn to page PARTY.

Let’s get NAKED! That’s right! Let’s get naked… Nakedbus that is! Thousands of people already have, and you should too. Nakedbus.com is a low cost city to city bus service that operates around New Zealand and fares start from $1 (plus 70c booking fee). How do they offer $1 fares, you ask? Not all fares are $1 - the earlier you book, the cheaper your ticket is. As you get closer to the time you travel, the fare rises slightly, but the top fare is modest compared to existing operators. OK, so I can go for a dollar… but where can I go? Nakedbus has services operating in most of New Zealand, hop onto the website, www.nakedbus.com, for detailed information on destinations and routes.
www.nexusmag.co.nz
There has to be a catch, what is it? There is no catch, it’s all booked online and you can either pay for it using a credit card online, internet banking or deposit money at any Westpac branch. Why nakedbus? Do I have to travel naked? No, it is recommended that you travel fully clothed. The name comes from stripping out the costs. There are no fancy terminals, or company cars for employees. Customers pay for the bus service they are using! No extra hidden costs. What else is in it for me? If you register on the site, you will get a reference number, and if you tell your mates about nakedbus.com and they use your reference number when they register, every time they travel, you earn nakedrewards points. Pretty sweet deal for doing nothing and them earning you free trips.

Wednesday 28th February Plenty going on this Wednesday, from clubs to pubs and drums to bums (in undies). It’s going to be busy one. Check it out: 10am-2pm – Clubs Day From 10:30 AM – DJ Koops 11.30 AM – The Wax Off with Bill and Ben 1.10 PM – Wai Taiko drummers 1.30 PM – 89.8 ZM Undy 500 7-11 PM – Toga Party and live band Late 80s Mercedes 7 PM – All ages party
10 AM–2 PM - Clubs Day
1.10 PM – Wai Taiko drummers
As usual, a variety of clubs will be out in force on Clubs Day. This is the best time to join the soccer team, take up rowing, get into battling while in crazy medieval clothes, or perhaps become part of the S+M Social Club. All an invaluable part of your student experience.
You’ll hear these guys whether or not you’re actually anywhere near them. Possibly the only Orientation event you can enjoy while several kilometres away. For the uninitiated, the Wai Taiko Drummers hit lots of big drums with big sticks, loudly, and very skilfully. Practice sessions have been credited with creating tsunamis and bringing down satellites. Possibly avoid if hung over. Otherwise, watch and marvel.
Just to make it a little more exciting, the Waikato Students’ Union has added some competitive spice. The WSU will be holding three competitions over clubs day. The aim is to encourage students to join a club, and to increase the profile of clubs on campus. Students will be able to drop their entries and votes in at the WSU Site and BBQ during Clubs Day. Winners will be emailed and results will be in Nexus the week after O’Week. Spot prizes will be awarded and announced throughout the day. Let the competitions begin! Clubs are encourage to start designing now.
11.30 AM – The Wax Off with Bill and Ben The famous Bill and Ben from TV’s Pulp Sport get out the wax for charity. Depending on the funds raised for The Special Children’s Christmas Party, some lucky person could be getting a full body wax. Come by to witness the pain and give to the cause. How often do you get to watch a good waxing?

ORIENTATION ‘07 GUIDE
1.30 PM – ZM Undy 500 Competitive chess players unite for the nation’s largest tournament! Nah, not really. If you want to know what this event’s all about, it’s all in the name. Look out for the ZM Black Thunder crew and stay tuned to 89.8 ZM for more details. The first 150 people to sign up for the famous event will receive a free pair of Bonds undies. This event is sponsored by Burger Fuel, with the proceeds going to charity. Good on ya.
7-11 PM – Toga Party and Late 80s Mercedes at Don Llewellyn’s Toga parties during O-Week are a great student tradition, and this one should be wicked. Continuing the timehonoured traditions of decadent Rome, the toga party is all about dressing up in sheets and getting drunk. $10 entry.
7 PM – All ages party, free entry If you’re under 18 or short on $$$, check out the all-ages alcohol-free (no, not ‘free alcohol’) party at the Student Union Building (from 7pm). DJ Jade will be in action and it should be a blast. Don’t forget your student ID.
www.nexusmag.co.nz
Late 80s Mercedes is an eight piece swing-funk band from Hamilton. With their own swing flavour on some classic numbers and some brand new Late80s pop, they often have the crowds packing the dance floor. With a four piece brass section (two trumpets, two saxophones) and your standard guitar, bass and drums, these guys are ready to get Don Lewellyn’s pumping. Nexus emailed gat-man James Hannah for some more details.
There was no Late 80s Mercedes - I just liked the sound of it, and it stuck! Actually I heard Puff daddy/P diddy sing “take hits from the 80s, Puff drives Mercedes” and I liked the rhyme, and there it was...
same day... if we had more time in the day we could suss something, I’m sure. Like Sam could write more, I reckon, but with all the time he spends sponsoring 57 World Vision children, he finds it taxing.
What are your ultimate musical dreams? Ultimate musical dream would be to get to a level where we could do Late 80s full time and be able to live off the music and make it our lifestyle. Boring, eh? Blah blah blah, good times, tour buses, TVs out of hotel minibars, pools and crap like that.
What student prank would you pull if nobody was going to find out? Toilet rolling the entire S block! Or guerilla advertising - defacing billboards and stuff so they say opposite things than the advertiser wants.
The bio you sent us has a lot of exclamation marks! You guys must be exciting! Yes?! We are very exciting!!!! Plus I get ‘Exclamation mark-happy’ sometimes!
Tell us about your original music – is that something you guys are keen to pursue further, or will you stick with the classic/new combo? We like the idea of writing our own stuff, just find it hard to find time between jobs. I mean, it’s kinda hard working at McDonalds, Pizza Hut and KFC all in the
Was there really a Late 80s Mercedes, or did you just like the way it sounds?
In your opinion, what would make the perfect O-Week? The perfect O-week... mmmmm. A band every night at my flat, like Shihad or Late80smercedes, a small vineyard, and a huge bucket of Hot and Spicy!!! Oh yeah... Visit these funky chaps at: www.late80smercedes.com

Thursday 1st March It just keeps getting busier this ASB Orientation. Thursday dishes up body painting, lake dipping, pizza eating, DJing, fluorescent fashion and a feast of funky music. We’re not sure when you’ll fit the classes in, but hey, it’s only week one. From 10:30 AM – DJ Koops 11.15 AM - Burger Fuel Body Painting Competition 12 PM - Spacifix perform live for free! 1 PM - Waikato Draught Student Olympics 1:30 PM - ZM Big Man on Campus Heat 7–11 PM - dDub, OdESSA and The Aviators at Don Llewellyn’s.
11.15 AM – Burger Fuel Body Painting Competition
has been released to TV and radio and was selected by C4’s Select audience on its first day on the show.
Team up into pairs for this colourful event, with one person painting the other. There are huge prizes on offer, with $500 for first, $400 for second and $300 for third prize. Hint – the amount of skin covered may well earn extra points. Paint provided. If you’re too scared or artistically-challenged to enter, come down and watch the art unfold. Big cheers to Burger Fuel for their support of this event.
If you just can’t wait until the gig, stock up on Spacifix love at www.spacifix.com, or get friendly with them on Bebo, Myspace and Youtube.
Noon – SPACIFIX Spacifix are quickly building a reputation as one of the most exciting live acts in the country. Their vibrant, funky, theatrical show has had critics raving and the punters dancing, and this noon show on the WSU Village Green should be no exception. Spacifix’ unusual combination of soul, funk, R&B, hip hop, reggae and pop adds up to a unique sound they like to call ‘world fresh’. After forming in 2003 and winning the 2003 Smoke Free Pacifica Beats competition, the young band has moved from strength to strength. Highlights last year included supporting UB40 in Tonga and performing at The Roxy in Los Angeles to an enthusiastic crowd. In May 2006 the band released their debut single ‘Sunshine Day’. The song sat on the Top 20 for six weeks and in the Top 40 for three months. TV2 broadcast Spacifix’ own highly acclaimed TV series in September/ October ‘06 and in October their debut album much love was launched. Spacifix’ new single ‘Gotta Get Like This’

1 PM – Waikato Draught Student Olympics It’s back – the traditional Waikato Draught Student Olympics, quite a rite of passage at Waikato Uni. Get together a team and test your skills. Will everyone survive the putrid lake water? Will last year’s renowned winners be back to meet the challengers? Will someone’s finger get lost in the pizza-eating? Who will be the champions? Be prepared for an afternoon of action-packed excitement. If you’re keen to enter, check out the form in this issue or ask at WSU reception. Sign up early to make sure of your spot.
7-11 PM – dDub, OdESSA and The Aviators At the Don Llewellyn’s. Door sales $15 while seats last.
11 PM - Fluoro Party at Bahama Hut Get out your fluorescent ‘80s leggings or sexy orange safety vest and join the party. Specially recommended for stoners who like shiny stuff. But admit it, you all love fluorescence really.
www.nexusmag.co.nz
OdESSA dDub dDub are one of Aotearoa’s best loved live acts. The highenergy Auckland-based 6-piece draw their musical influences from the heart of rock, roots, reggae, and dub, resulting in a fusion of flavours distinctly dDub in sound and style which is sure to have the Orientation crowd moshing, swaying and jumping. Their unique sound never fails to capture an audience’s attention and they have become firm crowd favourites at many nationwide outdoor festivals, including Splore, Queenstown Winter Festival, Soundsplash and Rhythm & Vines. The debut long player from dDub, Awake at Dawn, is the culmination of years of hard work and the realisation of a long-held dream. “This album is a milestone in the dDub journey” says band guitarist and lead vocalist Derek Browne. “To finally have the songs recorded for people to actually take away with them is fantastic.” With several nationwide tours under their belt, dDub’s live performance repertoire is impressive. In the past 12 months, dDub has shared the stage with other high profile acts including Fat Freddy’s Drop, Salmonella Dub, Cornerstone Roots, The Black Seeds, Katchafire and Kora, and performed to thousands of New Zealanders, including an 8000 strong crowd at Queenstown’s Winter Festival where they were brought back on stage for three pumping encores! The band assures fans and newcomers to dDub’s sound that they can expect a similarly awesome show this Orientation.
If you caught them at last year’s Orientation, you’ll certainly be looking forward to seeing OdESSA this time round. OdESSA have a solid reputation as one of New Zealand’s most exciting live bands. Their addictive rock/RnB electrifying groove sensation delivers a phenomenal energy to the stage which audiences can’t get enough of. OdESSA kick along the dusty centre-line where rock’n’roll and R’n’B first cross-mutated with memorable songs played inside out. OdESSA is a fluid and inventive rhythm section, with searing licks and dirty guitar grooves, polished off with strong, soulful vocals – playing wild to hot, sweaty crowds going crazy in a heady swirl of streetlights and hormones, exactly the way it’s supposed to be. The heat and excitement that OdESSA generates has been the source of inspiration for an awesome fan base across the New Zealand, and the band will be looking forward to returning this affection with the release of their eagerly anticipated second album during 2007. See page 22 for an interview with OdESSA singer Matt Pender. “Funk and soul jazzed out and souped up with the right dose of grrrrock” – Nexus, Orientation ’06. “You’ve got to be made of stone not to lose control when Odessa lets loose” - The package, May 2005
The Aviators 8 piece band The Aviators (with horn section) are apparently “a funky bunch of souls from Wellington who play a hot mix of soulful funk” and are influenced by all time greats James Brown, Stevie Wonder and Jamiroquai. If you’d like to know more, check out their website at www.theaviators.co.nz

OdESSA
More than you expect? Nexus chatted to Matt Pender (singer) from OdESSA, based in Wellington. You’re playing with dDub in O-week. What’s the deal with the small ‘d’ thing? Is it a massive conspiracy? Yes, well done! It IS a conspiracy. A riddle. A clue. Both OdESSA and dDub are anagrams of two words beginning with ‘D’ - or rather, ‘d’. The Truth is within your grasp. You are closer than you think. The OdESSA bio stresses that the audience may not be able to control themselves upon hearing your music. Has this lack of control ever taken particularly interesting forms? Nothing sacrificial or hardly ever involving chicken-blood or blue-painted skulls. However, on too many occasions to list here, patrons at OdESSA ceremonies have started shaking uncontrollably from head to foot. Drenched in sweat; shouting, screaming. Howling. Frothing at the mouth. The males often create this distinctive semi-circle around the stage and stand around stock-still while the women-folk writhe and twist and purge themselves at the foot of the stage. It can be quite frightening actually. It really is something you just have to see for yourself. If you could be completely anonymous (and then blame Nexus), what student prank would you pull? I once read how Keith Moon (drummer from The Who) was alleged to have - with the help of several roadies - nailed all the furniture from his hotel room upside-down to the ceiling in exact relation to how it had been on the ground. Our prank would be to do that to the entire campus. Including the students.

ORIENTATION ‘07 GUIDE
Got any plans for your time in Htown? Of course. It has everything to do with question one. Can’t wait! What’s coming up for OdESSA in terms of releases, videos, etc? We just recorded a new album 3 weeks ago which is in the mixing stage now and will be out in June. By the time your readership catches this conversation, OdESSA’s brand new single ‘Motel Machine’ will have been released to radio – you can check it at our MySpace page: www.myspace.com/ odessamusic I just heard some strange guy exclaim excitedly that the dDub/OdESSA gig will be “such a funky night”. Can you confirm or deny these allegations? Oh, bless him. Well lemme tell you this - you will be engaged and rearranged in every spiritual cavity. You’ll betray yourself with noises that science won’t recognise. You’ll transcend transcendence till your transcendental discombobulation discombobulates. You will dance, you will shout, you will be drunk, you will remember sketchy details when you awake the next morning, half-dressed, smeared in chicken blood, nailed to the ceiling of student hall with a smile on your face. Sounds pretty awesome, huh? OdESSA are playing with dDub and The Aviators at Don Llewellyn’s, Thursday March 1st. There’s a $15 cover charge while tickets last. Go have a look at www.odessamusic.net if you’re keen to find out more in the meantime.

Nexus Magazine is always on the look out for more contributors to add to its dedicated team. If you have a willingness to either write, draw, paint, investigate, proofread, design, interview, review, talk some smack, quiz, challenge, hang out, play loads of Puzzle Bobble and put in a worthwhile and valuable contribution to your student culture, then you’re just the person we want on our team! Student culture on campus is the responsibility of the students. Nobody knows what students want better than students themselves. It’s our mission to help facilitate that culture by bringing the means to express student life and opinion in a popular and well-read publication available for everyone to read. It’s also our mission to boldly go seeking out new life and new civilisations, but we only have time for that on weekends. We encourage everyone and anyone to contribute to the magazine. Looks, talents, age, place of education or technical prowess come second to initiative and energy. If you have the passion to do your best you will be a valuable addition to the team. Nexus is dedicated to entertaining and informing the student populace. If you would like to join us in our worthy cause then swing on by the Nexus office located in the Students’ Union Building (Waikato Uni) and talk to us. Blindspott are familiar faces on New Zealand’s music scene, and the nu metal/alternative metal band from Waitakare have now been going strong for almost 10 years. Their self-titled 2001 debut album has now gone triple platinum, and End The Silence went straight to number one on its release last year. This made Blindspott the first New Zealand music act to have both their albums debut in the charts at Number 1. In August 2006, Blindspott played at the massive SummerSonic music festival in Tokyo, Japan, alongside major international acts such as Metallica, Deftones, Linkin Park and Tool. Upcoming gigs include the 2007 South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas, and playing this Friday night at
Don Llewellyn’s (much more prestigious, naturally). Blindspott were voted NZ’s favourite band by the public as part of an Air New Zealand competition in 2003. Songs such as ‘Nil By Mouth’, ‘Room to Breathe’, ‘Phlex’ and ‘Drown’ have also been hits in Australia and in Asia. If you’re a Blindspott fan, you’ll already know all this and be lining up ahead of time for your ticket. Again, the best way to make sure of entry is to get the $60 ASB Orientation Pack which includes entrance to everything. This should be a huge night.
Aether

In a landlocked town, ingeniously built on a swamp, boasting rampant methamphetamine use and the highest rate of chlamydia in New Zealand comes the violently grand four-piece ‘aether’. Formed in April 2004 from two old high school friends, a stray vocalist and a guitarist crudely pinched from another band, aether have fast assembled a palette of progressive songs mixing dark, clean runs interwoven with searing distortions and sonic excess, alongside the expected musical augmentation, pivot turns, multiple climaxes and denouements.
large have been exposed to aether’s first studio recording, Swearing In, which showcases some beautiful movements through monster riffs and contemplative periods. Spotted by a promoter at a Tauranga gig, this single will be headed out to a 47,000 strong audience in the UK, and be receiving coverage on C4 and The Rock FM.

they’ve been praised for their radio live-to-air sessions and slots in larger local events Vampire’s Ball, the Pagan Festival and the recent Nightbreed Festival. With the single out now, and the Falling Tree EP due in February to follow, wider New Zealand will have a shot at consuming and elevating a rhythmically solid, aurally exciting and emotionally expressive new band. Concord Dawn
State of Mind
State Of Mind is a drum and bass duo consisting of Patrick Hawkins and Stu Maxwell. You might have caught them hosting the show ‘Next Level’ on BFM or heard their tracks on high rotate within a Concord Dawn set. A chance meeting in 1999 kicked things off for State of Mind and their popularity grew from there. Upon hearing State of Mind’s work, prolific Oxford-based drum and bass duo Total Science sought to work with them and label signings galore followed.
Concord Dawn are Matt Harvey (aka Matty C) and Evan Short (aka Kiljoy). The Kiwi duo have been making waves in the world of electronic music for years, and have been dubbed “NZ’s pioneers of Drum and Bass.” Concord Dawn have earnt a fearsome reputation for their chaotic live performances, with extensive touring all over the world. They return to The Land of the Long White Cloud armed with their latest album, Chaos By Design, and are playing Orientation gigs throughout the country.
State Of Mind’s debut full length album Take Control is now available with in NZ through Uprising Records. Smoke CDs on Take Control - “Providing a refreshing break from the current wave of soulful live dnb circulating N.Z. airwaves at the moment, State Of Mind take their energetic dance floor D’n’B killers, drape them with a glorious ambience of bright percussive loops, sparkling synths and driving bass lines to generate an album with a full and cinematic headspace, which is as wonderful when listening in headphones on the way to work as it is when turned up louder than the old hoover at home - not to mention being a fantastic companion on those up and coming long summer road trips! Recommended.”
Matty C and Killjoy have been musicians and friends since they met at school at the young age of 11. Once they discovered their mutual love for music, they formed a band together and started jamming every afternoon, playing tunes from Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones. Ahh. A few years later they fell in love with the rave culture. The pair were instantly drawn to this new sound, and began experimenting with creating their own. Since their first album Disturbance, Concord Dawn have been riding high both at home and internationally. On the heels of the success of their new album, the duo will be primed to put on a live show that will keep the ASB Orientation punters frantically dancing the night away.
Keep an eye out for Nexus photographers throughout all the ASB Orientation events. They’ll be roaming about all Orientation, ready to catch fun-loving – and stupid – students and clap them in the pages of everyone’s favourite student mag the following week.
It’s nearly all over (sniff), but you might want to check out…
