This week we slapped on our thinking caps and set forth into the world to find young men and women of various faiths on campus.

RELIGION PART 2 Credits:

Earlier in the year, we covered the major “Western” faiths, atheism and humanism.

We sought out the men and women who make up your fellow students and we grilled them. I feel everyone got their learn on for a little bit.

This time around, we went East. We tried our best to hunt down a Muslim, a Hindu, a Sikh and a Buddhist. No dice. We found a nice Hare Krishna gentleman and an incredibly friendly Muslim chap. We spoke with them and we have their stories on pages 24 and 25 of this week’s magazine.

Religion is always a touchy subject. For the past forty years of Nexus, there has been no avoiding religious debate in the pages of the magazine reserved for Lettuce to the Editor. We have moved away from our parents clutches and we can believe what we want, without our parents clucking their tongues. We can believe nothing at all if we want. The world is your oyster. Parents grow old and die. We hope there’s something else, or we hope there’s nothing else. We hope for an end to suffering.

Sometimes we come to our faith in times of great joy. We see a child come into the world and we thank whatever powers that be that the child is healthy and the mother is well. We fall in love and wonder how something as mechanical as evolution or natural selection could have created someone as beautiful, ripped, handsome, smart, and cute as our One and Only. We want to say thank you to someone or something.

We want to dance around in celebration of the divine and let the whole world know that we’re putting all of eggs in that one basket and we’re not ashamed of it.

Dear Nexus, Why is it that after over four thousand years of human existence that we still feel the need to debate simple religious beliefs? The eternal want for equality coinciding with a globally shared vision of how the past occurred and how the future should be laid down? Or a need to feel psychologically superior to any infidel who cannot share the same beliefs?

Now I can understand that your lettuce page encourages debate on contentious topics but is it not time we agree to disagree and raise new subject which may actually be of some use?

E.g. abortion, sending our troops overseas or the upcoming referendum on parliamentary systems.

Forgive me for wading into the shallows of this debate but I have been to church, spent numerous nights in youth groups and sang hymns at funerals and gatherings. I’m positive that many people have partaken in activities like that and they fall on both sides of the fence as either religious follower or not. I myself have no religious beliefs and through a background in earth/biological sciences, have established my own sequence of events that comprise my idea of how things went down. There would have been a time where I would dispute any religious belief that had the misfortune of falling out of the convinced mouth of a friend but we all grow up eventually.

The question you have to ask yourself is what right do you have to enforce what beliefs you do have on that person sitting next to you?

They believe in a form of god whether it is Allah, “God” or Opera Winfrey. The thing that most people fail to realise is that society today is built on the fundamentals of a religious ruling and that by following generic laws, you are “acting in god’s will”. These laws are extremely diverse and change in extremities from culture to culture but at the end of the day, they had

Someone buggered up the wordfind Dear Nexus, I have a terrible grievance with the puzzle page of issue 16. On line 10 of the word find, clearly printed, were the words ‘ANAL FUCK’ going from left to right. I found this incredibly annoying, and the editing to be horribly lacking. That your staff could let this slip is appalling and reflects horribly on your professionalism. People with a similar disposition to my own would be adversely affected by this to a very large extent.

Okay, I lied, but anyone who’s ever read a copy of Nexus already knows that. The reason I am writing is because atheism seems to be synonymous with arrogance these days.

Seems to be. As an atheist, I am annoyed by this stereotype, and also in reaction to the engaging letter in last week’s edition from ‘Saplonormative’. I am not currently holding The God Delusion. I have never set a Bible on fire. I have never at any point in my life had Richard Dawkins’ penis in my mouth.

Furthermore, the writer instructs us to ‘go to church once in a while, sing a hymn or two, get involved with the whole spirit of the thing’. Are you under the impression that all Christians attend church, and all atheists avoid it? I’m sure you’ve heard the quote about churches and Christians and cars and garages, to rewrite it here would be a cliché. I am an atheist, but I was also raised in a European household. I love Christmas, I sing Silent Night, I even attended midnight mass once. And I did it without clutching The God Delusion praying that the almighty Dawkins wouldn’t punish me for it.

The point is, atheism is a belief, or lack of, not a lifestyle. It doesn’t dominate every aspect of my life. When I’m in my Tirohanga Māori class I don’t remain silent during the karakia because I don’t believe in it, I go along with it out of respect. Not all atheists are arrogant pricks, just like not all Muslims are terrorists and not all Jews are cheap and not all Christians are biblebashers. Someone finds out I’m an atheist, its automatically assumed that I’m ‘pro-abortion’, that I love embryonic stem cell research and I’m unbearable in general conversation. It’s high time everyone stopped generalising everyone else and just chilled out.

LOCAL MAN DOES GOOD

Screen and Media Studies graduate Sash Nixon has taken out the Best Acting award in the Lucasfilms Star Wars film competition at the recent Comic-Con International in San Diego.

Studying at the Academy of Performing Arts?

Along with 22 other finalists, Nixon hit geek gold and was given the opportunity to put his work in front of sci-fi legend George Lucas.

All work and no play make the University of Waikato a dull place but Activities Manager Dave Garden wants to see students bringing our campus to life;

‘Star Wars: Hunter’ was inspired by a number of 80’s films, paying tribute to science fiction and other notable adventure flicks.

Play a classical instrument or even the guitar?

“What I am endeavouring to create is a twofold opportunity for musicians, firstly an income and secondly a stage to showcase their skills. This campus has a diverse array of performers and the university is providing a shop window for them to be seen.”

“Hunter was inspired by sci-fi of the 80’s. Not just Star Wars, but other films like Blade Runner and Robocop. There are Indiana Jones nods and James Bond nods in there too.”

Shot on Waikato Campus and near the Waikato River, the film follows the adventure of wanted man Rek Daggard, played by Nixon.

Daggard is a bounty hunter who sets a trap to capture a Jedi in order to gain a pardon by the Empire.

Converting Hamilton to a “Galaxy Far, Far Away” was faced with minor problems as Nixon put careful thought into creating an authentic fan-fiction film. The authenticity of set and actors, including Sir Edmund Hilary Scholars Shoshana Sachi and Jeremy Mayall, caught the attention of fellow film makers and talent scouts in LA. “One of the guys was a previous winner, he said the actors were really good, and I got handed a card from a film maker in LA who was scouting for talent.”

Nixon says the biggest thrill of the award ceremony however, was watching his film as part of the audience.

“The biggest treat was sitting in the audience with all the other Star Wars geeks. The film was really made for them.”

Can I vote?

Piripi is turning 18 on November 20th. He would like to vote in the election on 26th November and would like to know how he can do that.

Piripi can cast a Special Vote at any Polling Booth, but must take ID and confirmation of date of birth to the Polling Booth.

People have until mid October to get onto the Electoral Roll – if you haven’t registered to vote there are registration forms at the CAB offices. Our democracy depends upon every citizen and permanent resident casting their vote.

If the Hurricanes were a movie they’d be something mediocre like Soul Plane, because their players are walking out the door faster than an audience that couldn’t comprehend Snoop Dogg flying a plane. The recent restructuring of the Wellington Super 15 franchise has met with disastrous consequences, with new coach

Let’s face it. New coaches can be an absolute bitch. Most of us have grown up playing sport, and if you stuck with one code for several years’ chances are you experienced the introduction of a new teacher, and the associated differences that come with him or her. Sometimes, you are lucky, and you get a mentor both wise and the maddest bloke out. Case in point being Hamilton Boys High’s very own Mr. Kuggerlein, as any student who has met him will concur.

Whereas, other times you get Mark Hammett.

Life can be a cruel son of a bitch. Since his introduction he has jettisoned both Hore and Nonu, and copped a butt load of criticism for it.

Rumours emerged along the lines of Hore and Hammett trading blows, but both men shrugged it off. Now it seems the problem may lie in the possibility of Hore enjoying the occasional drink during the week. Who doesn’t? He hasn’t crashed his car and got stuck under Nige after a few too many Carters, so if anything he’s doing well. Ma’a Nonu’s axing was rumoured to be about his problem with authority. I’d have a problem with authority too if I looked like the Predator. I’d never listen to anyone ever again, because anyone ordering me around would get three red dots followed by a swift energy blast

Former Black Cap Stephen Fleming was arguably one of the most respected captains of world cricket. In the form of his life at the twilight of his career, he was slapping cuts and molesting gumby drives with the grace only a giant left hander could, yet when he asked to continue as captain of New Zealand’s test side, he was refused.

I don’t go to coaching 101, but I’m assuming somewhere in those lectures its taught not to jettison your best player, and if you just so happen to have one of the best captains in the world, to let him keep doing that. Chris Cairns and Nathan Astle also got pushed out too early, because hitting one handed sixes and scoring the world’s test fastest double century respectively doesn’t count for much in this world. At least Netball treats its players with a bit more respect. Irene van Dyk is still going strong at the age of 39, although I have heard somewhere Netball isn’t as taxing on the body, so in turn, that might make her case irrelevant.

Hammett better hope he’s got some badass youth lined up to save the Hurricanes, because by the looks of things their line up is going to be more pathetic than Helen Keller in a running race. At this point in time, Rugby Union needs now so more than ever support, bigger crowds and healthier revenue flows to keep struggling unions in the game. By offloading some of their best players, the Hurricanes just consigned themselves to having smaller crowds than the Phoenix. I can feel the universe ripping itself apart due to the degree of such an anomaly.

WITH DENI 2011 – THE YEAR OF THE REFERENDUM ON MMP: IS IT FAIRER? 2011 will be the year that most New Zealanders will remember as the year we hosted the Rugby World Cup, for the second and most likely last time. Most will also remember where NZ placed in this WC. Some will even remember it as the year, judging from the most recent polls, that the National Government spanked Labour’s bottom – or if Labour wins, how the centre-left spoiled National’s tea party, stupendously!

But how many of you will remember that a referendum on MMP took place in 2011?

On Election Day, 26 November 2011, NZ voters will be asked to vote in a referendum on our electoral system. You will be asked two questions: 1) Do you want to keep MMP, or change to another voting system? And 2) Which of the four alternative voting systems would you prefer if New Zealand decided to change from MMP? The four alternative systems which will be listed for you to choose from are: 1) First Past the Post (FPP); 2) Preferential Vote (PV); Supplementary Member (SM); and 4) Single Transferable Vote (STV).

Now it pays to be informed, particularly if your vote may help determine the potential electoral system which will be perceived as NZ’s preferred choice in modern times, whether that be MMP or one of the four listed. In addition, referenda on electoral systems – even indicative ones, don’t come along that often. The last one happened in 1992 and signaled that an overwhelming 85% of votes cast were in favor of changing the current electoral system (which back then was FPP).

Do you really want to be one of those grumpy individuals walking around in 10yrs time complaining about the current electoral system and wishing you had the foresight to cast your vote when you had the chance to?

It amuses me that there generally seems to be a generational tilt to one’s perspective on preferred electoral systems. But MMP seems to cause robust debate no matter how old one is. It has been argued that proportionality will mean the end of majority governments and create a legislature composed of many parties preoccupied with

power-bargaining and gaining short-term advantage.

Conversely, supporters of MMP say that it is fairer because the system honors the core principles of democracy, representation for all and genuine majority rule. They say MMP provides more choice and provides a foundation for the election of more women and visible minorities.

It’s important to note that no electoral system is perfect and MMP is no exception, however, the question you must answer before you vote is whether you believe MMP is the best option on offer.

All eleven of these people have a seat (and a vote) on the WSU Board of Directors which governs the Waikato Students’ Union.

Any WSU member (ie: University of Waikato Student) is eligible to run for the board. So if you think that you have some good ideas to offer then put your hand up and run to be elected! Similarly, if you think that the WSU is going in entirely the wrong direction, put your hand up and run to change it! This is the best opportunity students have to affect how the WSU is run. CLUB CORNER: PICTURE LOG Waikato Young Labour

WAIKATO YOUNG LABOUR We’re about ideas, the big picture, the ‘game-changers’, and making a positive difference.

Let’s face it – politics can be boring. Those endless hours spent pondering whether John Key is going to be on the cover of Women’s Weekly again next week – aren’t they fantastic? But the relaunched Waikato Young Labour isn’t your usual group of political junkies – we’re about much more than this.

It’s set to be a fun, social group where we discuss a whole range of issues, go out to the pub, and even get involved in the community.

We’re about ideas, the big picture, the ‘gamechangers’, and making a positive difference.

Hell, this sounds like something students should be interested in. The permanently poor, permanently squeezed student should stand up and take note! Even if Labour’s policies aren’t really your cup of tea, then start learning about those of some other political party. At least figure out whose milking you for the smallest amount of your hard-earned cash so you have more to spend on... something else.

Anyway, Waikato University has a shiny new club. Waikato Young Labour, as part of the national Young Labour organisation, stands ready to give all students concerned about fairness and a good job after graduation a louder voice. Well, that’s the fancy way of putting it.

In reality it’s more like this – we are a group on young people interested in where New Zealand is heading, and think that Labour

has got the right kind of ideas. We want to support Labour get into government and make their policies become a reality. Along the way we will form some ideas of our own and put them forward: Young Labour plays a key role in actually debating the party’s own policies. We also want people to understand accurately what Labour is about (informed opinions are so much more fun than simple ignorance.)

We think that Labour has a history of standing up for students, and for the vulnerable who just need a leg up to help them be on their way. Our club is here if you are passionate about these values and want to join a dedicated bunch of people. These are exciting times – as we run up to the election we will be putting our views respectfully forward for all on campus to hear.

We’ll be the ones doing cool things such as public debates - on and off campus -, getting guest speakers ranging from prominent national leaders to people doing inspirational work in the community, getting out to local markets and community events to support our candidates, and, especially, ensuring that all the students on campus know the great policies Labour can is offering in terms of student loans, allowances and assistance.

Hello! We are the University’s only dance club! We offer a range of teachers and dance styles each week such as jazz, hip hop, ballet, contemporary and more.

We cater for all abilities so if you’re a professional or have never danced before, come along! We hold regular classes in the Academy of Performing Arts on campus in the dance studio. These classes are between 14

1-2pm (cultural hour), on a Wednesday. We encourage everyone to come along and bring friends!

There are also more advanced contemporary classes on a Monday and Friday taught by Dr Karen Barbour. The cost is only $20 per semester for students and you can come to which ever and as many classes as you want!

that we dance on the village green which we will be planning for the end of semester.

CAREERS AND EMPLOYMENT CENTRE (TE KAUNUKU TŪMOMO WHAKAWHIWHINGA MAHI) Many people are not aware of the excellent careers and employment centre located on the Hamilton Campus in the Chapel Building (by the medical centre and between the Gate 1 Car Park and the rec centre). The photos opposite show the two entrances into the building.

Since a lot of people don’t know about careers, we sent WSU Director Tammy in to see them to find out more. Consequently, in this article, we thought we’d have a look at some of the services on offer by the wonderful careers people, who you can email at careers@waikato.ac.nz.

Make sure you get in early and see the careers advisors before starting your final year of your degree so you are up to date and ready for recruitment rounds early in your final year! of people and we certainly see a number of dumb things, including the guy in today’s article who got himself stuck in a drain! This perspective isn’t helped by the mass amounts of reality TV shows that are streamed onto our TV sets day and night. Shows filled with loud, crazy, idiotic, obnoxious Americans who make for some pretty entertaining TV shows. It’s no wonder though that we have this view of Americans and as if to prove us right 21-year-old Jared Medeiros was found stuck in a drain. In his defence he probably really did want his phone back but I really think he could have found a better way to get it.

“Maud’s” was the third part of a cycle of work entitled “The Six Moral Tales”. Beginning with a short, “The Bakery Girl of Monceau”, in 1963, and concluding with “Chloe in the Afternoon”, released nine years later, the films all take their lead from the 1927 silent classic “Sunrise”. In each a man is caught between two women, one whom he either truly loves or is better suited to and another who is more a diversion, erotic or otherwise.

Of course reducing the cycle to such a simple formula does it a gross disservice. Delicately structured dramas, shot on location - usually the streets and cafes of Paris - the films are all about the complexity of human relationships. Packed with small but knowing incident, Rohmer sustains a brisk pace, usually keeping non-diegetic music to a minimum but often driving the narrative with voice-over narration supplied by his if not unreliable then at least highly subjective lead character.

Just recently 21 year old Jared Medeiros from Ceres, California was found stuck in a storm drain after he had wiggled in there to retrieve his cell phone. He had his upper torso wedged halfway in the open hole for approximately 40 minutes before a neighbour noticed his legs sticking out of the road. A sixteen-year-old girl, Brianna Mooney, found Jared in the drain after hearing him scream. Jared had to be rescued by fireman and luckily for him the only things he sustained were minor cuts and bruises and probably a pretty boring 40 minutes wait. He claimed his phone ended up down there not due to drinking but because he was attacked by gang members who threw his phone down the hole.

After the conclusion of “The Six Moral Tales” Rohmer produced a new cycle in the 1980s, “Comedies and Proverbs”, comprising a further half dozen film and then a third in the decade that followed, “Tales of the Four Seasons”. The fourth and concluding movie in the last series, “A Tale of Autumn”, made in 1998 as the director approached the age of 80, was a world wide popular and critical hit.

For a man in his eighth decade of life Rohmer showed uncanny insight into the emotional lives of teenagers and twenty-somethings, sustaining an accessibility and commercial appeal in his work far beyond that of any of his New Wave peers. Auteur House stocks “The Six Moral Tales” in its entirety and individual episodes from each of the subsequent cycles. Whilst Rohmer’s films would not appeal to everybody - the Gene Hackman character in the 1970s neo noir “Night Moves” infamously compares watching them to “watching paint dry” - they are warm, humanistic and universal in their inquiries into the mysteries of romance and friendship.

So after reading this, I thought I would do some research on stupid things Americans have done and I found this website with some funny things Americans have said to do with travel. http://strangeplaces.net/weirdthings/travel.html : ‘I had someone ask for an aisle seats so that his or her hair wouldn’t get messed up by being near the window.’

‘A client called in inquiring about a package to Hawaii. After going over all the cost info, she asked, “Would it be cheaper to fly to California and then take the train to Hawaii?”’

‘I got a call from a man who asked, “Is it possible to see England from Canada?” I said, “No.” He said “But they look so close on the map.”’

Whether these comments are true or not I don’t know, but they could be and they made me giggle so I thought I’d share them anyway.

Do you remember ever being forced into doing something at school that you didn’t want to? P.E., a speech competition or a communal sing-song? At the heart of “Mrs Carey’s Concert” there’s a battle of wills between a determined if well intentioned teacher and an obstinate student who at first seems sulky and hormonal.

“Captain America: The First Avenger” is the last superhero film we shall be laying our eyes upon this winter and it ended our run on a good note. Captain America is one of Marvel’s earliest heroes, a kickass superhero that would give Superman a run for his money.

guy that gets bullied by your typical meathead, but still he insists on attempting to enlist countless times with the US Army. After being rejected under various fake names, Steve gets recruited for a secret project run by Dr. Abraham Erskine and Howard Stark. That’s when he makes the dramatic transformation into a Nazi killing super soldier bound for Germany.

Carey’s nemesis is a rather fetching Asian student called Iris, a girl who puts no effort into the compulsory singing sessions. Seeing her as a disruptive influence, Mrs Carey attempts to win Iris over by talking about selfishness and stressing how much of a privilege the experience of making music in the most iconic of Australian venues is. Iris resists the arguments, articulating a philosophy of her own with surprising clarity. It is a great moment in a never less than compelling film.

I should point out that “Mrs Carey’s Concert” is not some lame brain teen comedy or angsty melodrama. It’s a fly-on-the-wall documentary, an exercise in cinema verite where the camera observes the action largely - though not entirely - unacknowledged by the subjects and where the narrative unfolds without recourse to voiceover narration.

The documentary’s title suggests a certain kind of “To Sir, With Love” formula at play, the well-worn cliche of charismatic teacher inspiring errant delinquents to reform. To an extent “Mrs Carey’s Concert” delivers that in it’s central story, that of gifted violinist Emily putting her rebel days behind her and taking a leading role in the school orchestra. Music is both Emily’s family legacy and her personal liberation. You would have to be mighty cynical not to be moved by her journey to maturity and self-belief.

What gives “Mrs Carey’s Concert” an added dimension is the time its makers decide to devote to Iris’ rebellion. That Emily will enjoy the climactic performance becomes a foregone conclusion. Iris’ reaction to the concert is where the drama - and the glory - of the concert lies.

Amidst all the euphoric faces at the end hers is the most difficult and ambiguous to read, the true test of Carey’s belief in the transcendent power of music.

I have to admit I was excited to see “Captain America”, as most Marvel films have been top-notch. Captain America lived up to that from the fan boy point of view, but there were some things about the film I felt I had seen before. The way Chris Evans becomes Captain America seems rather familiar as it’s replicated in most super hero films. It follows the same story; weak good-hearted guy wants to be hero, he somehow becomes powerful, then saves the day and gets the girl. The worst part about this is that it’s a reminder of the first Spiderman movie; Peter Parker in particular. Toby Maguire and Chris Evan’s character are rather similar; both wanted to be heroes, both found power then became heroes, both got bullied and both got made by Marvel. I’m not saying the director made a mistake in doing it this way, because the Spiderman films are being re-made, but it stood out.

Enough of the negative. “Captain America” looked and sounded amazing, the crisp picture, CGI intense fight scenes and the super Nazi Soldiers. Apart from the beginning of the film, the story was excellent playing on WWII, Hitler and Nazis. The director did an awesome job of re creating a 1940 New York City; it looked like it was filmed in NYC in the 40’s. Some of the fight scenes were a little un-realistic but were justified on the grounds of it being an American film. When there are 200 US soldiers going against an army of Nazi super soldiers with death rays who do you thinks going to win?

Captain America delivered to its audience and prepped Marvel fans for the 2012 Avengers film, which was mainly why Captain America sort of snuck up on us so fast. I had procured a spot up on the mezzanine floor overlooking the crowd and stage and it was the perfect place in my opinion as I got to see the show in its entire spectacle and not just the tops of people’s heads.

JULY 29TH, ALTITUDE

Six60 is one of New Zealand’s most successful bands.

Altitude Bar and Nightclub was host to two ‘live and massive’ shows last Thursday and Friday and I was fortunate to get given a free ticket to their sold out Friday Show.

The night began with Six60’s supporting act, some unknown DJ who played a mash-up of tunes, from Michael Jackson’s Thriller, to Nero’s most recent release Innocence. I thought that the DJ was terrible, couldn’t mix and picked a strange assortment of songs and I wasn’t the only one with this opinion; the crowd appeared to be quite restless waiting for Six60 to perform and chanted ‘Six60’ through his set at numerous points.

The song ‘It’s bigger than hip hop’ saw the entire band jumping about on stage crazily, followed by ‘Choice of the chosen’ where the set begin to slow down. Next up was my favourite song from Six60, ‘Someone to be around’ with the lead singer Matiu melting the hearts of every girl in the crowd with his amazing voice and encouraging the crowd to sing-a-long to the chorus of the song. Announced as their last song for the night, ‘Rise Up’ got the crowd pumping, but being the fan that I am, I knew that there would be an encore as they had yet to play their most popular song.

As predicted the band came back on stage to play to an eager crowd ‘Don’t forget your roots’. It was the perfect end to the night as there was not one person in the crowd who did not know the lyrics to the song and everyone sung as loud as their voices allowed.

Six60’s songs are songs that evoke thoughts of family, friends and those you love. They help you realise who and what is important in life and these messages that they bring through their music can been seen in the passion and energy that they bring to the stage. This was the third time I had seen Six60 live and they definitely did not disappoint.

If you haven’t seen them live, I don’t know why, they are amazing musicians and even better live.

-R.J. Boris have been going strong for almost twenty years, they’ve released 17 studio albums crossing the faded lines of ambient, drone, stoner doom and rock & roll – and boy do they rock! Boris have an incredible style; an energy and vibe that no other band can even hope of reaching – aside from perhaps the Melvins who interestingly Boris named themselves off a song from the album ‘Bullhead’ by the Melvins.

So let’s talk about the sound: Heavy Rocks is exactly that – it’s HEAVY and it ROCKS, though it was recorded in 2002 it feels like it was

written in the 80s. It’s a groovy, heavy collaboration of sheer funk and rock and roll. Heavy Rocks is like having a leather jacket wearing, eleven tonne elephant made out of noise and static drop on your head.

It’s like drowning in sound so heavy it’s thicker than air -in a good way. It’s like slamming your head into a brick wall made of feedback.

You know the picture of a guy in a chair being blown back by speakers (used on Hitachi Maxell products back in the days of cassettes – go wiki it)? That is the Heavy Rocks experience.

The first thing one should say about Boris is that they’re Japanese. The second is that they’re Japanese. For those unfamiliar with Japanese music it’s crazy, it’s brilliant and it blows the minds of the “round eyes” that listen to it. Boris are a particular crazier vein of Japanese music that lays waste to all that we’ve ever know about music. The Japanese have always had a nack for taking certain themes or aspects from Western music and pushing them to the limit –other examples include Maximum the Hormone, Guitar Vader, Cibo Matto and all Japanese Power Metal.

Heavy Rocks will have you head banging and mispronouncing Japanese in no time, It’s not just all Rock and Roll with a tonne of fuzz, it also has a great lot of juxtaposition pumped into it, to make the awesome more well timed and AWESOME. It will blow your mind and take you on a psychedelic journey of funk. Follow up this album up with a Malt shake and some aviator sun glasses, highly recommended songs include – Akuma No Uta, Korosu, PINK and Naki Kyoku.

THE PATH TO GOD WITH JIMMY AND ART

Nexus loves religion.

That might seem bizarre to some of you, with some previous editors being “staunch atheists” (as in, some asshole read a wiki page on Charles Darwin and bought a copy of The God Delusion but never made it past the first page), humanists and generally not too fussed about what you are and what you believe.

The Nexus of 2011, however, loves the pomp and circumstance that surrounds religion. Sweet cloaks, awesome hats, great stage shows.

Religion makes life interesting.

Earlier in the year, Nexus went out and spoke with an atheist, a humanist, a crazy-hot Wicca girl, a Polish Catholic and a few born again Christians. This time around, we scrambled to try and find some brothers from Islam, some friends from the Hindu faith, a Sikh or two and a Buddhist. We ended up with a brother from Islam and a Hare Krishna dude.

Here are their stories.

Hare Krishna with James: “It’s like mathematics. Not everyone can or wants to study calculus.

Some study statistics, some arithmetic. There are different gradations of spiritual knowledge, and the ancient yoga text of India provides the most comprehensive and incisive knowledge into spirituality.”

Hriman Krsna-Das has been studying this spiritual science for almost ten years, has travelled to India and back, a student of the ancient Vedic culture, all in the name of reaching a higher platform of spiritual consciousness.

His path to Krishna started on a different religious note, coming form a Catholic background. While studying Philosophy in Wellington, it was his “curiosity and sincerity to understand what this world is” that attracted him to Krishna Consciousness. Crossing from one polar opposite of religion to another wasn’t as difficult as you’d think though, gaining a lot of support from his family.

“After realizing its positive results, mum has been very supportive of Krishna Consciousness; she donates generously to the movement.”

Hare Krishna’s don’t eat meat, fish or egg, they’re abstinent and aren’t allowed to gamble or drink alcohol nor any other illicit substance. Turning his back on what some perceive as the necessities to survive the everyday stresses of life was not all too hard, Hriman 24

explains, as they were all replaced with a more positive life style and a higher taste.

The noticeable clothing commonly associated with Hare Krishna’s are merely external.

“The clothes are just a cultural traditional thing, just like Christians wear crucifixes. The chanting is more than just a tradition. The public display of chanting is the easiest way by which we can elevate our consciousness to a higher level, and provoke auspiciousness in the atmosphere, to get everyone off the mundane bodily platform.

We chant both individually and congregationally.”

Hriman has had his fair share of intolerance, what with the clothes and music that some refuse to relate with, though says it’s almost expected in a society that breeds ignorance.

“It’s not shocking, [it’s] just plain right ignorance. Society is very secular, it doesn’t promote spiritual education, so ignorance is predominating. It’s really a by-product of society’s miss-focus. ‘How to make money’ – that’s today’s religion.” Work, buy, consume and die...

Unlike the exclusive religions of Catholicism and Christianity, Hare Krishna welcomes all to their spiritual movement. No matter what you look like or what you believe, they see all as equal.

“You’re not this body. The soul is not black, white, Muslim, or Christian. These are bodily identifications we impose on ourselves.

The soul is transcendental to all bodily forms of identification.”

The talk of spirituality may seem foreign to many in western society, which probably has its thanks to a differing view of the term ‘science’. In eastern religion, religion means science, while consciousness is the energy of the soul, just as light and heat is the energy of the sun.

If you’re herping your derp, don’t fret, the degree of which you immerse yourself in Krishna Consciousness is completely up to the individual and their desire to learn. Some only study certain aspects - the yoga, the vegetarianism, meditation – while others sign up for the full course.

“The knowledge is there, you have to want it and look for it. It depends on how much you can take, how sincere you are and how much you want to learn about spirituality.”

Islam with Art: Samuel grew up in a Christian home. His father had been the pastor of a church in Rotorua before he moved to Hamilton. Samuel, now known to his brothers in Islam as Abdullah (meaning servant of God), came to his faith on his own terms, through reading the Quran, the sacred scriptures of Islam, as revealed by Allah to his prophet Mohammed.

The purpose of Ramadan, Abdullah told me, is to help us become pious. “Prophets in the Bible fasted, Jesus fasted. It builds selfdiscipline. If you can avoid eating and drinking while you are hungry and thirsty and avoid getting angry while you are hungry and thirsty, it helps you have a better control over your emotions and your desires. If you can abstain from food and drink, you can abstain from sin.

I met with Abdullah on campus and we walked and talked to his car, then drove to the Mosque on Heaphy Terrace, right across the road from the Claudelands Park. A Mosque (Masjid in Arabic) is a teaching space, a space for fellowship and a worship space.

“It also builds empathy. There’s a huge famine happening in the Horn of Africa right now. How many people are actually moved by these images? How can someone who has never had to go hungry or thirsty in their life empathise with those who struggle to find enough food to eat?”

“My first exposure to ‘real live’ Muslims was in Indonesia, where I was visiting family members working for an aid agency. The Muslims I met were really nice and that made me more inclined to find out more. At the time, however, my Arabic was limited. It wouldn’t have been appropriate to

“Most Muslims choose to pay their charity at the end of Ramadan.

“Later on that year, after returning to university in New Zealand, I got quite sick. My father gave me a book written by Karen Armstrong, who was once a Catholic nun. It was an academic examination of the life of the Prophet. The amount of documentation is immense, as is the work which has gone into authenticating and preserving it in its unadulterated form.

Islam is an Abrahamic faith and a monotheistic faith. Many coming from a Christian background see Islam as a pagan religion.

Allah, believe it or not, is simply the Arabic word for God. “When Arabic Christians pray to God, they too use the word Allah”. Allah, Abdullah told me, cannot be feminised, nor can it be pluralised.

“Allah is the same who created Adam and who spoke with Abraham and Moses and Jesus”.

The Arabian Peninsula at the time of the Prophet was a region of constant war, with tribal vendettas carving a path of destruction across the region. Within his lifetime, however, the Prophet Muhammad

Sam’s family, with its Christian background, reacted with traditional Kiwi ease at his discovery of Islam and his acceptance into his life.

“They all reacted in different ways. There was a bit of ‘Well, can’t really understand that, but you’re free to do whatever you feel like doing’. The good old Kiwi attitude of ‘it’s your life’. I was a little surprised that they didn’t spend more time trying to understand.

“I thought perhaps that they might have been interested in finding out what their son was up to exactly, but I guess it’s a natural human thing: humans are really only comfortable looking for supportive research, things which agree with their world view. When they have so much baggage, whether it’s from the media, whether it’s been taught from the church, it’s probably quite hard to take a view which is quite different.

“There’s certainly time in my life where I wouldn’t have come anywhere near this stuff. I wouldn’t have had the ability to open my heart to Islam”.

A translation is only considered “man’s translation”. Arabic, the natural and unadulterated language in which the Quran was passed to man, is the only way to truly read the Quran How does one become a Muslim?

New Zealand Maori are one of the largest growing sectors of converts in Islam in Aotearoa, along with educated, single white females.

After a great afternoon, in the sun at the Mosque with Abdullah, he drove me back to campus and I felt strangely at peace.

You have to testify with your tongue and your heart that there is none worthy of worship except for Allah, and Muhammad is his Prophet”.

When I met with Abdullah, it was Ramadan, a month long religious festival of fasting.

“The Islamic calendar is lunar. One of these months is Ramadan.

During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from food, drink, and sexual relations, from sunrise to sunset.”

There you have it. In Issue 2 of Nexus 2011 we covered a bunch of religions and this time around we tried our dandiest to get to the rest. But we’re not the Gestapo. We’re not going to start kicking in doors if people don’t want to talk to us.

We hope we busted some misconceptions and everybody learned a little bit. We sure did.

HOUSES OF WORSHIP

others will wander down a path of faith later in life. Wherever you fit, Houses of Worship are pretty fundamental to our community, so here’s a brief run down of some Churches in the University area.

by, it’s a fully serviced ball of religious joy! Like the others, they have multiple gathering times on Sunday (10am and 6.30pm). Their young adults group is entitled ‘Pursue’, helping those aged 18-30 pursue a relationship with God and their peers and wider community. Keeping up to date with modern times, all sermons are recorded and available in MP3 format on their website for future listening and possible epiphany-like pleasures.

Hillcrest Chapel: The Hillcrest Chapel is located on the corner of Masters Ave and Morris Road. Priding itself on its contributions to the community, this church was very friendly to speak to. They have two worship times: 9.30am and 10.30am each Sunday, which is nice for those that enjoy a longer sleep before saying hi to the big guy upstairs. It’s a Chapel that really knows how to take care of their attendees, with weekly Woman Coffee Mornings, Divorce Recovery Workshops, a Community Creche, and a large youth group that meets every Tuesday and Wednesday night. Very much a Chapel that caters to all their members!

Arise Church Hamilton: Members of the Arise Church have a large presence on campus, volunteering at many events at both Waikato Uni (they were the ones trudging through the cold and rain of Disorientation Week) and Wintec. Their Sunday Services are performed at the Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts Centre, while they also offer the real dedicated the opportunity of Huge Prayers on a fortnightly basis Friday 7am.

Vision Eastside Church: Located at 112 East Street, this Church offers the widest range of activity of all the Churches in the Hamilton East and University area.

They offer 3 Sunday services: the ‘classic’ 9am, the ‘contemporary’ 10.30 am, and the ‘young at heart’ 6.30pm. With social groups for all ages, along with separate Business and Music programmes, this Church literally has a place for everyone. The Eastside Young Adults group is for those aged 18-30, and is aimed towards taking the stress out of work and study. This anti-stress group puts on social events that include but are not restricted to sports and hang times, whatever it takes to enjoy life.

Gateway Christian Centre: Right in the heart of Hamilton City at 950 Victoria, this Pentecostal church wouldn’t speak to us without the permission of their Pastor 26

Hillcrest Baptist: While they don’t see the largest group of young adults, the Hillcrest Baptist prides itself on a wide range of entertainment-based activities, and even features themed months to keep things interesting.

They commonly arrange dancing and music performances, hymn afternoons and magical nights for great illusionary fun! September will be reborn as Chinese Month, while each Tuesday is a social night of study for the young. On August 14th they’re holding a shared meal from 4.30pm-6.30pm, so if you’re equipped in the art of sandwich creation, get on down and share with the community. At the moment the Church is between Pastors, and their Sunday Service is at 10am.

Krishna House: Located on Sheridan Street, the Krishna House is a communal environment and cultural sensor for all interested in eastern mysticism. At the moment they have 5 Hare Krishna’s living there and have had students stay too. It’s a centre that teaches everything from yoga, musical instruments, veganism, vegetarianism etc. Brahnacharis Monks run the house, and are hoping to spread their message into Waikato University in the near future with a Yoga Club, and a website is on its way soon. Many students attend every Tuesday night for workshops of the philosophical nature featuring guest speakers, which in the past have included a Travelling Monk from Yale University.

Lady Goodfellow Chapel: The Lady Goodfellow Chapel is located on the University, opposite the Rec Centre. Their mass times are Sunday at 5pm, and Monday and Wednesday at 12.10pm. Every Tuesday they hold a Guided Christian Meditation at 12.30-1.10pm led by Brother Simone Schiaratua from the Anglican Society of St. Francis along with University Chaplain Sue Burns.

The Lady Goodfellow Chapel is a reasonably recognisable building, sitting as it does next to one of the lakes on campus. High on its roof sits a crucifix, a stern reminder to Christians and Jews that they’d better behave, or the Romans will get them. Inside, a spacious room is available to all denominations: Quakers, Anglicans, Presbyterians, and the whole spectrum of the Protestant.

As Nexus 1974 points out:

“Although the University Council has formally sanctioned the establishment of religious sectarianism and intolerance on this campus, the members of this university community could still compel it to reconsider its decision. The University Council must accept for once that it is responsible, not just to itself, but to those over whom it has jurisdiction”

What’s that? No Popery in the Lady Goodfellow Chapel? You heard that right friend, but first, we’ll go back to the beginning.

Sir William Goodfellow, a well known “benefactor and bigot”, as Nexus 1974 described him, offered the University a donation of $100,000 for the construction of a chapel on the University chapel.

Some students and faculty members wanted our campus to remain completely religion free. The Lettuce (oddly called Letters) section of the 1974 Nexus is filled with voices both for and against the chapel.

During 1974 Nexus, for some unknown reason, suddenly dropped the story, around about the time that they received (in the mail) some super secret documents. These documents detailed the chapel committees plan to claim it was a multidenominational chapel and then be all: haha, no Popery.

It was around this time that it came to light that the donation for the construction of the chapel had a few strings attached. Other faiths could do their business in the chapel. Jews and Catholics could get married in the LGC, but only if a Protestant minister was also in attendance.

A document Nexus 2011 received this week also supported a creepily late date at which Roman Catholic worship was only available under Protestant supervision. Dated from the 27th of November 1991, it lists Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist and Church of Christ members of the Lady Goodfellow Chapel Trust.

What?

Still no Roman Catholics.

It turns out that Sir Goodfellow, a Christian gentleman, thought that all other religions were just pretend, and having them do their thing in ‘his’ church would make it less churchy.

So there you have it. Go and enjoy a Mass with your Catholic friends at the Lady Goodfellow Chapel and reflect on the rocky road of religion at the University of Waikato.

Ai is an outspoken political activist critical of the Chinese government’s policies, “economic crimes” abound.

In other news, I have been sick lately and have had to resort to ‘sick person games.’ These include; but are not exclusive to; Tissue Hoops, Stair Sledding, Guess-what-dinner-tastes-like and Creative Ear Popping. It was during my most recent sledding incident (turns out if you make the sled too perfect it will not stop; it will throw you at the wall) that I started to ponder the big questions. Questions like, if I can’t taste food, does that mean I can eat foods I hate and save money/ time for the delicious foods after I stop being ill? If I blow my nose too hard will I go deaf? And last; but definitely not least; if a perfectly healthy cat hangs around at your house even though you have never fed it, only to have it then meow persistently to get your home-alone flat mates attention after the front door was left wide open at 10pm and subsequently save her from potential rape and/or murder; is it then, a Guardian Cat?

I have the freedom to write this column about a subject which many find offensive. You have the freedom of expression to write letters to the editor, sparking discussion and debate. This is the exact reason that I write this column, to get people to speak about the issues of religion.

That brings me to my point; freedom of expression is great until religious expression infringes upon the legal rights of the nonreligious. Religious discrimination against homosexuals is infringing upon their rights. Pushes to introduce intelligent design to public schooling is infringing upon the rights of our children.

Religious discrimination against atheists infringes upon our rights to free expression. I can believe or not believe in what I wish, and I am fine by you doing the same.

This is in reference to the recent ‘Slutwalk’ campaigns going on around the world. In case you didn’t know, a senior Canadian police officer was thrown into the media recently for stating that “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized” at a crime prevention safety forum in New York. The comment sparked a huge media interest and inspired two women to start the ‘Slutwalk’ protests which campaign against explaining or excusing rape by referring to aspects of a woman’s appearance.

Firstly I dislike the word ‘slut’. It’s a degrading word and it’s used far too often than what it should be, i.e. not at all. I see no need to shame each other and allow men to shame us by calling us sluts, especially in this age of ‘equality’.

It seems to me that we’ve achieved equality with men in nearly every aspect of life, bar sexuality. I think instead of us girls trying to make the word our own we should be removing it from use altogether.

Rape and sexual assault are both pretty big deals and it’s not ok to blame a woman for bringing it on herself for what she was wearing.

Girls like to dress up, we like to go out and most of the time we choose outfits not just so a whole bunch of guys can gawk at us and use it as an excuse to sleaze their way over to our table.

I do however have some concerns about the way you’ve been dressing, I honestly think that if you wear see through clothes, lingerie, and belts as skirts (I have seen these combinations) you’re going to attract some creepy comments or some creepy guys are going to try to dance with you. And I will have little sympathy when you complain.

Whatever you want to show off, stay classy with it. If you have a short dress; cover up your cleavage, if you’re rocking a strapless or a backless dress; wear some stockings so it’s not a free for all skin show.

We can still dress up, look nice and stay safe girls.

And don’t take the word slut from anyone.

I love foreigners. I love the word foreigner. I like the music of the band Foreigner. Foreigners are okay in my book. You might be thinking “Leg, why do you like foreigners so much? They come over here and steal our jobs, and our women!” Of course they do, you simpleton. Not only are they gorgeous, but they are presumably worldly, and most of them are really nice people. It’s hard not to be charming when you’re a nice person. It is the primary reason I am not charming.

Face it: Everyone in New Zealand either knows each other, or is related to one another. Foreigners fix the ubiquitous hazard of chatting up your cousin when you’re drunk on a Saturday night.

Foreigners have stories about Kuala Lumpur, and New York City, and Paris. Foreigners have accents, which range from annoying to alluring.

Basically, they’re more interesting than we are.

Then, you have to consider the fact that these foreign folk are here to learn/work/have fun. You’re only here because your dad got your mother knocked up on the local soil. Most of the international students I’ve met in my time here at university have seen more of the country in six months than I have in twenty-odd years. When you’re forced to accept that your time here isn’t granted, you’ll actually start to appreciate it, and do something with it.

Imagine your boss tells you about a party being held by one of his/her friends. It’s an open invitation, one night only, and you’re fine if you go. Nobody will ask you questions afterwards, and the security is lax.

There are a bunch of people you don’t know, probably lots of chances to get in trouble, and alcohol. Why not go crazy?

This is why I like foreigners. They have the opportunity to possess a complete, unbound freedom that very few of the untraveled will ever experience. The smart ones take advantage of this fact, and I can’t begrudge a person who knows how to have a good time.

Punching hookers, stabbing kittens, starting revolutions. Everything’s easier when you’re not the one who has to clean the metaphorical vomit from the figurative carpet in the hypothetical morning.

Life’s not always about going out and raging, sometimes it’s about relaxing to a nice glass of pinot gris with some melodic jazz playing in the background. With that in mind, this week I thought I would try and prevent the onslaught of hate mail you all seem to love to send about me and what I write; and discuss a topic that should be somewhat ‘safe’, my favourite places in Hamilton that are perfect for those regular catch-up with friends.

House bar, the first on my list, is a bar that specializes in craft beers from New Zealand. Every Wednesday night they have ‘Skint student night’ with $5 pizzas, beers and sauvs. Not only is it cheap, but the food, beer and atmosphere is amazing. You’ll find the Fevah FM DJ’s on the decks the first Wednesday of every month, or often lounging on the couches that are reminiscent of your grandmother’s house, sipping on a nice brew or two.

The thing I love most about House however is how they do a great job of making you truly feel like you are at home.

Limestone aka the old HSL on Hood Street is great if you are looking for somewhere a bit smaller, less crowded and is a great place to grab a drink with your best mate. Wednesday Theory is a night made especially for those catch-ups, with all the music you listen to at home that isn’t played in public like James Blake, Onra, Homebrew and Flying Lotus.

Nitro Cocktail Bar perhaps my favourite of them all is the only liquid nitrogen bar in New Zealand. They make Nitro cocktails using liquid nitrogen that rapidly freeze your cocktail at -196° and turn it into an alcoholic sorbet. The manager Karai is always smiling, it’s always warm and inviting; and the Sangria is to die for. The big leather couches outside provide a good posé to watch the passersby as they venture into town and the giant Jenga set is great at reawakening your inner child. Willie G and Bevan Nichols are Nitro’s resident Thursday and Friday night DJ’s, playing a mix oftunes, from a distinctive underground sound to a jacked’ up groovy sound.

So if you are down for a quiet night, or a catch-up with friends, make sure you head to one of the above mentioned places and grab your beverage of choice, be that a sauv, an epic pale ale, or a Juicy Fruit Cocktail; and enjoy.

Bogans have been described collectively in various ways. I like community, but others have used words like: scene, sub-culture, and tribes. But perhaps the most interesting term I’ve seen is religion. In the 1980s a child psychiatrist called King published findings from his research that described Heavy Metal as a new religion amongst American teenagers. He decided this was a bad thing, and that this form of music was corrupting “our youth” and leading them down the path to drug abuse, sexual promiscuity, and poor mental health.

Obviously this is rubbish. However, the prospect of Heavy Metal being a religion appealed to me, hell I bet it’d even appeal to resident Atheist Sam. With that and my own preference towards blasphemy in mind, I present to you the Bogan religion.

In this religion, God would have to be Ozzy Osbourne. While describing himself as the Prince of Darkness, with so many contemporary bands attributing him as a key influence he is most definitely the top of this religion’s food chain. In Christianity, the second in command is Jesus. If Ozzy is God, then the son would technically be Jack Osbourne. So instead let’s say Dimebag Darrell.

He definitely revered Ozzy in a paternal sense and he died for our sins, betrayed by another Bogan. Once you establish Metal as an overarching religion, much like Christianity you have to account for differing denominations based on varying interpretations of the overall philosophy. Hence why last week’s column was about genre.

The differing genres are analogous to denominations of Christianity (e.g., Catholicism or Protestant). In relation to disciples it is very difficult to narrow to just 13 like Christianity. In an attempt to limit the field I’m going with the Big Four of Metal: Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax. With a total of 17 members across the bands, and most band members attributing inspiration to Ozzy, this would seem appropriate.

Lastly, a prayer: Our father who art in Metal, Ozzy be thy name. Thy records spun, mosh pits to come, in Hamilton as it is in Wacken. Give us this day our daily Deicide and forgive us our Steel Panthers, as we forgive those sampling our music. Lead us not into Dub Step and deliver us from Justin Bieber. For thine is Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax. Slayer Forever. Fuck yeah.

So there you go Mr King, the Church of Metal. Stay Bogan \m/

A few days on we meet our contact at 3838 Lucas Valley Rd; its George’s other ranch, adjacent to the Skywalker one. We swap cars and head back up the main road soon arriving at the Skywalker Ranch gates, which open to the theme music from Star Wars (obviously). We pass by cabins and streams, all in a wondrous forest, before a huge white weatherboard mansion, where Lucas’s office is located, comes into view.

The inside is layered in beautiful dark wood and leather furniture illuminated in low amber light, original artworks hang, and there’s first-edition everything all around us. A vintage Steinway grand takes centre floor as movie props lay behind glass and there’s library that is a sight to behold. A coat rests over a chair back by a research table, brown with elbow patches. It’s definitely His. We walk through the glass Atrium to the west-wing; four people serve behind tables layered with food as the chef carves up meat. He tells us that this place is a fully self-sufficient eco ranch and today is the Summer Barbeque. We picked a good day to visit. Needless to say lunch was amazing.

The employees here have luxury that not many get to experience.

For example, the employee building down the hill is complete with a restaurant, basketball court, gift shop, gymnasium, swimming pool, baseball diamond, lake - Ewok Lake to be precise - for boating on, and accommodation if they decide to stay late as they often do.

Near 7000 acres, this place is a testament to just how big an independent filmmaker can get, away from an unscrupulous studio system. It’s a huge inspiration. Unfortunately, we didn’t meet ‘The Bearded One’ this time, but we do have an invitation to go back and visit whenever we’re in the area.

Cheryl Reynolds is a creative entrepreneur and business leader with over twenty years experience at national and international levels across the creative digital and technology sectors. Before making New Zealand her home, Cheryl was Managing Director of Antenna Audio UK, the global leader in digital interpretation for museums and cultural institutions worldwide. Prior to that she started-up and led a wide range of commercial and non-profit cultural organisations including Impressions Gallery York and Camberley Theatre Surrey. Cheryl came to New Zealand in 2003 to take up the role of Creative Industries Director at Wintec where she led the development of a range of innovative projects including SPARK and SODA Inc. When SODA Inc opened its doors in 2009, Cheryl was invited to become its founding CEO, which she says has to be one of the best jobs in the world. Cheryl holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management and a Masters in Fine Arts. She is an artist and aviator in her spare time.

MAKING LIVING CHEAPER WITH HONEST MATT Well once again I have failed to think of a money saving tip but never fear because I have thought of a way you can make a bit of extra dosh, possibly even ‘millions’ (said in a Dr. Evil voice).

You may remember a couple of weeks back, when 60 Minutes interviewed New Zealand’s “king of legal highs”, Matt Bowden.

Bowden is the man responsible for bringing party pills and Kronic (a.k.a Dairy Dack) to NZ. 60 minutes was allowed inside his exclusive $140,000 40th birthday party. This was an extravagant affair. It wasn’t your typical 40th involving 50 drunk tradesmen gaily huddled under a failing tarp. This was extravagant affair involving rock music, dancers, dry ice and possibly a tiger (probably not, but maybe).

This guy is making a killing selling legal highs. So it got me thinking about gaps in the legal high market. We have Party Pills. Check.

Dairy Dack. Check. It then occurred to me! Dairy P! Kiwis love their methamphetamine! Every year some silly bugger causes some kind of national outrage and blames it on the P. Why not make a legal alternative and sell it? Media reports indicate the demand is there.

Imagine the convenience Dairy Meth would be for your average P Fry Pete. No more waiting in a car scratching your face at 4am on a Tuesday morning outside some gang HQ. Old Pete could just pop into his local corner shop and continue the party for another couple of days. Everyone wins. Dairy owners could charge a fraction of the cost the real stuff sells for and make a killing. It would be highly addictive so you know you’re always good for repeat sales. It would be legal which would be good for the police (less arrests on the real stuff), bad for the gangs (sales of the real stuff would go down) and great for the end user (they wont get so paranoid because “It’s legal bro”).

Anyway like I said earlier this isn’t really a saving tip it’s a way you can make money. This idea is on the house (I want nothing to do with it).

If you are morally bankrupt enough to put all your time, knowledge and energy into making and selling dairy P you’re not the kind of person Honest Matt wants to be associated with. Could be a good money-spinner though.

As winter approaches sick leave may become more relevant to you, hence I have dedicated this week’s column to sick leave.

A common misconception young people have is that; there is no paid sick leave. I have found that young people will take unpaid days off work when they are sick, because they did not know they are entitled to sick leave. In one case a student was told they could have the day off and when they were feeling better they had to go into work and make up the time they were away for, as well as their usual hours of work.

So your entitlements to sick leave are as follows: after six months continuous employment with the same employer you are entitled to a minimum of five days paid sick leave per year. You can use your sick leave to look after yourself, or a dependent such as your child, parent and or spouse.

True Story: One young worker worked for the same employer for three years and every year the employer would wipe the unused sick leave.

This is illegal; the Employment Relations Act (2000) states sick leave can accumulate up to a minimum of 20 days. So if you have worked for the same employer for 4.5 years and have not taken a sick day you could have 20 days sick leave to use if required.

New legislation now enables your employer to request a doctor’s note to confirm you are unfit for work. If your employer requests that you provide a doctor’s note it is their responsibility to pay the associated costs on the first and second day you are too sick to work. On the third consecutive day of sick leave it is your responsibility to pay the associated costs.

PLEASE NOTE: •3 consecutive days off can be counted as Friday and a Monday, even if you don’t usually work the weekend.

•These are just legal minimums, you can ask for more sick leave •Unlike annual leave, sick leave does not get paid out to you when you leave your employment

We came here because it was walking distance from my fellow Uni friend’s house and it was a beautiful day, so we decided to walk rather than drive anywhere. We’ve been here plenty of times before and it can be rather entertaining if you go on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon and giggle at the middle aged woman, with their identical Rodd-andGunn-check shirt-and-beige slacks wearing husbands and ridiculous ‘fashion’ handbags, like the transparent Marc Jacobs bag covered in tacky plastic daisies. Anywho, I just remembered this is not a fashion column so I better get back to cafe reviewing.

Taitua Arboretum – 26/7/11 First off, welcome to this column, The Beauty of Hamilton; I was inspired to write it by the often cited opinion that Hamilton is a hole, as well as the article in the Waikato Times a little while back, about Aucklanders telling tourists to give the city a miss.

The truth is, Hamilton is actually a beautiful city, with no shortage of things to see and do in it. Just to be clear, I am not a Hamiltonian; I moved here last year, and I’m now a second year student. So, if an outof-towner can appreciate the city, you can too! I’ll post this column with a picture of somewhere or something around the city, and give you a brief explanation of it. It could be something you didn’t know existed, or simply don’t stop and appreciate often.

Upon entering I am always struck with the awesomeness of the wallpaper, with its cute little gold laced monkeys and tropical palm trees, and the fact that they have the same wallpaper in three different colours in different parts of the cafe. I ordered a piece of delicious looking chocolate mudcake and my friend a salmon tremizzino.

My mudcake came slightly warmed, as I had requested by me, and with a little dollop of cream. It was so many kinds of melty, gooey deliciousness I can’t even begin to explain it. My friend’s tramizzino came with capers, pesto and relish and she kept making strange moaning noises while she ate so I can only imagine that she found it

First up is Taitua Arboretum. I know of 5 Hamilton-born and bred students who had no idea this beautiful park existed, so it’s a safe bet you probably don’t either! Taitua is an awesome park 5 minutes beyond the west edge of town, down Taitua Rd (Google maps has the directions; they’re very simple!) As you can see, it’s very scenic place, with ponds, pagodas, trees, as well as board walks, lots of chickens, ducks and swans, and walking tracks and picnic spots. Dogs are allowed on leashes, and there are stacks of bamboo, which I can say from experience, provide excellent poles to duel your friends with!

We both ordered iced coffees which come with a dollop of ice cream and topped with a little cream, for a superior iced coffee experience it is best to stir these completely into the beverage before drinking.

Perfection. Jack’s are pretty consistent with their good coffee; I haven’t had a bad one yet. Occasionally we are so inspired by the iced coffee’s deliciousness that we indulge in a second one. Although at $6 it’s a wee bit steep for a shot of espresso, sugar, milk and ice cream, that isn’t even blended.

Jack’s staff are all pretty nice people; they are friendly and especially personable. The cafe is set out really well considering that it is a little on the small side, the table aren’t smushed together like you might find in some smaller places and yet there is usually plenty of places to sit unless they are super busy. I like to sit in the comfy arm chairs by the window if someone hasn’t beaten me to it.

ARMENIAN LENTIL AND APRICOT SOUP This is an unusual combination of flavours that makes a great soup on a winter evening.

SautĂŠ : 3 tbsp olive oil Large onion finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, chopped 1/3 cup dried apricots, chopped Bring 1 1/2 cups of red lentils (rinsed) to the boil in 5 cups of chicken stock, cover and simmer for 30 minutes, until tender.

Add 3 medium tomatoes (or a can of chopped tomatoes), 1/2 tsp ground cumin, thyme, salt and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes.

Puree all the ingredients together.

Reheat and add 2 tbsp of lemon juice just before serving. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley.

COW PAT COOKIES 1 cup melted butter 1 cup brown sugar 1 sugar Add 2 eggs 1 tsp vanilla essence 1 cups rolled oats 2 cup cornflakes Add 2 cups flour 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp baking soda Chocolate chips, chopped nuts or whatever else you fancy!

Put small ice-cream scoops of the mixture on baking trays with lots of distance between, and bake for 13-15 minutes at 180 C.

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 Sonic was Sega’s coming of age into the video game world, with it bringing it ongoing success not just with various popular titles and competing with Nintendo’s Mario but success for one of the best consoles for its time, the Sega Mega drive. Sonic swept the world at super-sonic, ring collecting proportions, sweeping aside the competition and into the hearts of all console gamers alike.

Then came arguable the best complete Sonic title, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, taking the same base as the first game it and amplifying it up to 16-bits of 2D side-scrolling epicenes. The reason I say the best as it combines all the features that make Sonic well Sonic, with his ball-curling, supersonic propelling and enemy crushing nature to new levels. This title also introduces a new character in Tails the fox, adding the feature of multiplayer into the game, with extra levels dedicated to this.

The story follows Sonic the Hedgehog and his new partner, Tails the Fox, on their mission to stop the evil Dr. Robotnik from stealing the Chaos Emeralds to power the Death Egg. Sonic and Tails must defeat Robotnik’s army and free their friends. The structure of the levels in Sonic 2 also become a lot simpler and easy to follow with the levels being split into 2 different parts, with the first level about collecting as much rings as you can to gain extra lives and reaching the end of the level with the 2nd part also about collecting rings but mainly facing off with Dr. Robotnik, with the target of defeating him, freeing your trapped friends and remaining alive.

The added benefit in the 2nd game is Tails assistance in battling Dr. Robotnik with having a second player taking control of Tails and helping you beat each level and collect rings more efficiently. Another added benefit is the Special Stages where if Sonic collects 50 rings before the check point he and Tails can be warped to a Special Stage.

Special Stages track Sonic from behind while he runs through a 3D half-pipe course filled with rings and bombs. A set amount of rings must be collected to pass through three checkpoints and eventually obtain the emerald itself. If Sonic collides with a bomb, he will lose some rings and will be immobilized for a few seconds.. After finishing, Sonic is transported back to the last star post he hit in the zone when the special stage is over and has zero rings.

In “2P VS” mode, players compete against each other to the finish line, either as Sonic or Tails, in a split-screen race through three regular levels; Emerald Hill, Casino Night, and Mystic Cave, and a special stage. After one player finishes one of the regular levels, the other player must finish the zone within 60 seconds. There are two unique items in versus-mode: a teleport monitor that instantly switches positions between players in the zone, and a Robotnik item that damages the player.

Overall, the high-paced and crazy environments in which you travel in completely changed the platform and elevated the impact of console games for a generation that were just discovering gaming. We see the birth of a gaming icon that shows us the potential any game can have on an individual, whether it inspires to travel at high speeds and crush your enemies then go for it.

THE REALM OF INFINITE CHAOS AND COMICS WITH SQUIDY

CAPTAIN AMERICA: AN OVERVIEW By all accounts the Captain America movie is awesome. If our reviews say so then it must be true. Because of that comics will be sold, toys will fly off shelves and Captain America will undoubtedly go through yet another revival amongst a generation too young to remember the 1990 Captain America movie and all its sins against humanity.

The problem is that Captain America is boring.

I confess I have never been a regular reader and there will be someone reading this getting ready to jump to Steve Rogers defence. It isn’t even Captain America’s fault that he’s boring, it’s Superman’s. See when Stan Lee wrote his “Just Imagine” series for DC re-writing all the characters origins to make them his he really didn’t need to write Superman because Jack Kirby had done it for him in 1940. It’s a simple recipe: 1. Take one premade, near invincible, alien superhero with an unquestioned sense of right and wrong and patriotism.

2. Change alien to genetically enhanced “Super Soldier”.

3. Give him the weakest sidekick in comic book history (next to Aqualad perhaps) Leave to marinate till the outbreak of conflict and you have Captain America. To really get Steve Rogers you need to understand that he was first created at a time when Japan was starting to look at Pearl Harbour wondering just how pissed off America would be. The problem is that Cap’ just doesn’t fit in when he’s not killing Nazi’s or smashing commies (in the 1950’s the title of the comic was changed to Captain America Commie Smashers!!) hence all the changes.

In 71 years Captain America has been killed and brought back, trapped in a block of ice, rebelled against super power registration, resigned as a superhero, become a mall cop, met a gay man and mentored Bucky to replace him

He has also led or co-led the Avengers, battled the Red Skull and other bad guys numerous times and even made guest appearances all over the Marvel Universe but none of that is interesting enough to write about.

If you do want to read some good Cap’ titles go back to the early 80’s.

Like the Green Lantern had done a decade earlier Captain America was introduced to the darker side of society and it shook him hard.

He did everything from fight an anti-nationalist terrorist called Flag Smasher, to busting meth labs, and becoming an advocate for social change after realising a childhood friend was now gay.

Captain America: Not the world’s most entertaining or captivating superhero but what are you going to do instead, study?

KEVIN PRYOR GOES DOWN ON BOOKS DEGREES FOR EVERYONE - BOB JONES Bob Jones once beeped his horn at me when I walked in front of his BMW in Queenstown.

Despite this hostile gesture, he is one of the only rich businessmen in the world I have some admiration for. This is due to the fact that he seems to be one of the few who has interests outside of making stacks of money. Like writing novels for instance. He also ran an essay writing competition when I was at Victoria, where the best essay won $1000 for arguing ‘Why management students should not be flogged.’ Truly impressive stuff.

‘Degrees for Everyone’ is a novel written in his usual satirical style. The target of the satire being the increasing commercialization of Universities.

The fictional University of Ralston is famous for its Medieval Philosophy Department and Library.

But in an effort to ‘move forward,’ the new Vice Chancellor wants to embrace a more commercial model. He wants to shut down the Medieval Library and become the first bookless University in Britain. He also starts initiating courses based on the criteria of popularity rather than traditional scholarship.

As a result Ralston starts offering papers in Rastafarian Studies, Grief Counselling, Applied Paedophilia, and the Astronomy Department is replaced with Astrology. The Vice Chancellor decides that by increasing pass rates to 100%, courses attract more students, and more funding from the Government. Soon Ralston is one of the most popular Universities in Britain, offering Hamburger Studies in the new McDonalds Centre. The traditional Humanities disciplines are shut down as they are no longer popular, and are not considered part of the real world. The ending is farcical, Ralston’s traditional Coat of Arms being replaced with a Hamburger, a laptop, and the motto ‘Degrees for Everyone.’

Aside from the obvious shots at post-modern trends, Jones has a keen grasp on the intellectual degradation that commercial tertiary models have entailed. I wager that a few of the lecturers at Waikato have had more than a passing glance at this book.

A PAINTED HOUSE - BY JOHN GRISHAM A Painted House is something I’ve been reading slowly. A chapter or two at a time in between reading things that were melting my brain. It’s not the kind of novel that I’d normally read by John Grisham, A Painted House is definitely not a legal thriller.

Set in 1952, A Painted House is a story told through the eyes of 7 year old Luke Chandler who lives with his parents and grandparents in rural Arkansas.

It’s the summer and his family and workers are struggling to bring in the cotton harvest and hoping to earn enough to settle their debts while everyone is worrying about his Uncle Ricky who is fighting in Korea. They bring in the Spruill family, who are hill people, and some Mexican migrant workers to help them to harvest the crop. In the beginning life seems hard, but still kind of idyllic for Luke. His long days in the fields are started with breakfasts of ham, eggs, and biscuits and the one cup of coffee he is allowed a day. And at the end of the day his family comes together to sit on the porch and wait out the heat while listening to baseballs games on the radio.

However Luke experiences some things which make him feels like the world actually isn’t such a good place. He is threatened so he won’t talk to his parents or the sheriff about the things he has seen. And learns that his family members might not always do the right thing even though he hero worships them.

The things I’ve read online tell me that A Painted House is based on Grisham’s own life; he was born in Arkansas and was the youngest of five children. His father was a cotton farmer and a construction worker and he, like Luke, wanted to be a baseball player when he grew up.

I enjoyed A Painted House. The story itself is really strong, with well developed characters and all the different threads of the story come together well. I wanted to expand a little more on the plot but was scared that if I did I would be giving too much away: I wanted to avoid this because A Painted House was really good and I want other people to read it and enjoy it as much as I did.
