School is drool and people who peaked in it are tools. I didn’t peak in high school. How do I know this? Because I didn’t enjoy high school, and it is a known fact that people who didn’t enjoy high school, flourish once they’re out of it. To those of you who did enjoy high school, I have some news for you: You’re going to be the one in your 30s reminiscing on the “good ol’ days”, every day. You’re also going to be the one who lives in the same town your whole life and never considers moving. If you weren’t sure, here are some telltale signs you peaked in year 11: 1. Your high school friends are your only friends. You don’t like to test new waters and the thought of walking to campus by yourself makes you cringe. 2. You constantly look back at your school photo album to see yourself in your dashing sportswear playing rugby or hockey. Your athletic ability is long gone!

3. You attend more high school events now than you ever did when you were actually a student - like being asked to the ball even though you’re 21. 4. You still wear your leavers hoodie. 5. You still introduce yourself with the nickname you earnt in high school. We don’t care ‘bread bag’. 6. You constantly bring up your lead role in the school musical despite “never wanting it”. I pity the ones who peaked. I see those people in my town tell the same stories over and over and it makes me sad. Funnily enough, a lot of them are happy - ignorance is bliss I guess. Their lives are comfortable, stable, and that’s just not made for me. I should thank them though, because without them I wouldn’t have wanted to leave so badly and be where I am now.

To Teach or Not To Teach

With the recent announcement of the government's public sector pay freeze we asked two alumni, with a shared passion for teaching, for their personal experiences. Onyx has recently put her degree to use teaching secondary whilst Jak on the other hand, well, he’s one of our designers.

On Thursday between the hours of 1:00 and 2:00pm the Student Centre elevator was out of order. This elevator is typically used by students and professors and lifts passengers from the ground floor to the second, avoiding the 34 steps in the process. Without the elevator, this meant students were forced to take the stairs and accidentally get fit. This wasn’t the only issue - the elevator is also used for accessibility purposes. Not only did students unwillingly get fit but accessibility services were hindered also. Queues quickly formed in front of the Student Centres elevator doors as hundreds of students (slowly) walked up the stairs. Relic of a low-budget zombie movie, students were amiss for the rest of the afternoon. With the elevator broken, staff fell victim to tardiness. Dr. Kirstine Moffat arrived late for her ENGLI301 presentation. Mature management students missed the first 10 minutes of their compulsory MNMGT581 tutorial, with one commenting “Goodness, I haven’t moved like that since 1989!”

24

No one could explain why the elevator was broken and how long it would be out of service for. While investigating, we interviewed a campus security guard who wished to remain anonymous, who said, “A group of five males are to blame. I see them every morning and afternoon, they are like a pack of dogs. I think one of them goes by the name of Hamish Darn but I can’t recall.” The university still hasn’t cleaned our ponds and now our elevators are breaking and students are unknowingly exercising. Since last week’s publication Vice Chancellor Neil Quigley is yet to take up the role as head groundskeeper. Something must be done. For any serious solutions, please offer them to the editor here: editor@nexusmag.co.nz

If your biggest personality trait is that you haven’t downloaded TikTok then you must have more free time than the rest of us, who are still learning to dance to renegade. Spend the free time you have and give these candles a go. They might light up your life or they might not. Who gives a shit.

Materials: - Taper candles - Rolling pin - Heat-proof container

Method: 1. Fill a heat-proof container with warm water (if you use boiling water it will simply melt the wax). 2. Submerge your candle and leave to soften in the water for 15 to 20 minutes. 3. Carefully remove your candle and at this stage it should be soft enough to manipulate. Using a rolling pin (or jam jar) carefully flatten your candle, remembering to leave 2 inches at the bottom unflattened so you can put your candle in a holder once finished. 4. Once you’ve flattened it, slowly twist the candle. You need to move quite quickly because the candle will start to harden again. If it does begin to harden before you’ve finished, then place it back in the warm water for a few minutes. 5. Lie your candle down flat on a paper towel to harden. Voilà!
