Rugby Union
(Waitomo) Chiefs Manawa
Home: FMG Stadium Waikato
The Chiefs Manawa is the professional female rugby union team based in Hamilton. They compete in the Sky Super Rugby Aupiki competition. Founded in 2021, this team has an impressive short record winning the inaugural title of the 2022 season where they defeated the Blues Women 35-0 in the final round.
Unfortunately, I have to say that I don’t watch this team play as much as I could (I don’t watch rugby much at all to be honest), however, with a track record like theirs it’s safe to say that they are a force to be reckoned with. Best of luck to the women of our Waikato team!
Football
Hamilton Wanderers FC
Netball
Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic
Home: Globox Arena Hamilton
Formed in 1998 following the merger of Waikato Wildcats and Bay of Plenty Magic, this Netball team represents both regions in the ANZ Premiership (formally the ANZ Championship). The Magic were the most successful New Zealand team in the ANZ Championship; they were the only team in the competition's history to contest in the finals series every year.
I never understood the hype around netball, but in my first year I watched a game and I’ll admit it was quite intense. I would suggest catching a game at least once in your life, especially considering how big netball is here.
Home: Porritt Stadium
While football in New Zealand may sometimes be overshadowed by rugby union, the Hamilton Wanderers Association Football Club is a semi-professional team home to Hamilton. They currently compete in the Northern league which consists of teams from the Northland, Auckland, Waikato, and Bay of Plenty regions. These teams compete to qualify for the New Zealand National League.
Football is the greatest sport in the world, but football in New Zealand is… okay. Sure, Chris Wood is a Premier League player, but he’s a one in a million chance. If you’re still keen to catch a local game, head to Porritt Stadium when the season starts to watch the Wanderers at their home grounds.

STUDENT SUPPORT
Like we said, Student Support is probably the most important thing we do around here. It is however a little niche. It has the largest impact on the smallest group of students but rather than waste 6 paragraphs boring you with the facts, we thought we would do them in a quick list.
HERE ARE 7 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT OUR STUDENT SUPPORT TEAM:
1.
WE ARE NOT THE UNIVERSITY:
This one feels like an easy win but when we are managing your case we are just looking out for you.
2.
WE ARE NOT SUPER OLD:
OK, one or two in the WSU are old and getting older by the day, but the people helping you still know what it is like to be a student. Some are still students.
3.
4. IT IS FREE AND CONFIDENTIAL
SUPPORT IS THERE TO MAKE SURE YOUR VOICE IS HEARD BUT NOT ALWAYS THAT YOU GET WHAT YOU WANT:
We will be your advocates we will make sure you get every opportunity, but sometimes we can’t make you right or what you want a reality.
Heya, my name is Sage. I’m currently working toward a Bachelor of Environmental Planning in Science and the Environment. I’ve been part of the voice team since mid 2022.
STERLING
Chur e te whānau, I’m Sterling and I am the student support manager for the WSU. I am always happy to support students but respectfully I’d rather not, not because I don’t want to do my job, but because I wish nothing but the best for students.
5.
IF WE DON’T KNOW, WE WILL FIND OUT:
Sometimes, the best thing we can do is find the right people and make sure they help you.
6.
OUR WEBSITE WILL GET BETTER!
This one we are working on. We want to make sure that when you need help in Hamilton or Tauranga, you get it. So throughout the year, we will build better tools so you can book appointments, fill out paperwork, and know who is handling your case.
7.
SUPPORT ISN'T MYOPIC:
While our primary goal is helping individual students succeed, that isn’t where the story ends. Everything from helping with international orientations to cooking classes and especially training and delivering our Class Rep trainings.
THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE IS, IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHO TO ASK, ASK US!
Kia ora, my name is Sara. I’ve recently finished my studies and will be graduating in April of this year. I have been part of the student voice team at WSU since 2022.
Two years ago the WSU took a long hard look at what was happening in Tauranga and we realised it was time to step things up. Tauranga wasn’t your mum and dad’s campus anymore but a vibrant and thriving student spot.
We started with what we called an Iconic Events Strategy. In that first year, it meant a Tauranga Ball, then a slightly bigger Orientation, then a Toga Party, Comedians, Bigger Prizes, and eventually Lani and Logan.
2024 is going to be big for our Tauranga tauira and with Sophie already on board as the new Tauranga director, the three of them have already started to figure out how they can make the WSU a bigger part of life by the beach instead of just the people bringing you Mario Kart and Red Bull. Don’t get us wrong, there will still be Red Bull, so much Red Bull.
Year three of our new approach in Tauranga will also include an increased focus on advocacy and student support as well as continually raising the bar on events and making sure we give people as much notice as possible to shop for the Tauranga Ball. No one wants a repeat of last year’s near apocalypse.
The WSU has a supreme amount of confidence in Lani, Logan and Sophie to really deliver the Student Experience Tauranga deserves in 2024.
