Ingrid and Roberto married and focused on raising their kids, Renato and twins Isabella and Ingrid, but coping with Ingrid’s stardom remained a challenge. Stepdad Jock (with Sally and brother Rick) was “both cruel and loving,” the actress says, but her relationship with mom Margaret was solid. “She was always my best friend.”

Stronger Than Ever THE ACTRESS OPENS UP ABOUT OVERCOMING HER TROUBLED PAST AND HOW SHE FINALLY FOUND HAPPINESS By RON KELLY

S

ince she turned 70 last year, Sally Field earned a Tony nomination for The Glass Menagerie and started filming Maniac, a new Netflix series co-starring Emma Stone. But away from the spotlight, Sally’s been working on her most personal project ever: a memoir, In Pieces, due next fall. It’s about “the little girl I was, about the teenager who backed into becoming a celebrity,” Sally says, “and about the craft that taught me to stand on my feet, a craft that helped me find my way out

at

of a complicated childhood.” Though she’s won two Oscars (for 1979’s Norma Rae and 1984’s Places in the Heart) and three Emmys, Sally has endured her share of difficulties. In the book, she’ll open up about her parents’ painful divorce, her menacing stepdad, a debilitating depression and her lifelong search for love. Writing In Pieces for more than five years has been cathartic. “She used to look back at her life and think she was weak but she now realizes, ‘Wow! I was stronger than I thought,’ ” a friend of the actress tells Closer. “Sally’s had so

many ups and downs, and now people are going to be reading about them in her own words.”

CHILDHOOD FEARS

Sally’s first big challenge came at age 4, when her parents divorced in 1950. “I felt I had to make everybody happy,” she recalls of the pain shared by mom Margaret, an actress, and father Richard, an army officer. “I remember my father’s crying. That was devastating to me. I thought it was my fault and if I could be real, real cute and funny, I could make it better.” CLOSERWEEKLY.COM 17

CO “She is talented and sexy,” Burt Reynolds tells Closer of his girlfriend of five years. “We [had] a really good time.” “Those were good years for me,” Sally says of her time with first husband Steven Craig, “but we were certainly not the right people to stay married.”

“Obviously, I’m not very good at marriage,” Sally, here with second husband Alan Greisman, quips.

She couldn’t, of course, and it was jarring when Margaret married Hollywood stunt man Jock Mahoney in 1952. Jock’s temper was volatile and when Sally suffered horrific nightmares, he “thought the way to handle my fears was to tell me to shut up. I never did find anybody to help me, to turn on all the lights and make that fear go away.” The burly, 6-foot-4 Jock also got physical. “[He] threw me across the yard, something humiliating,” Sally confesses. “I was always aware of my lack of size and my powerless position. I’d have given anything had I been able to pick him up and throw him.” Later, Sally did start to stand up for herself and older brother 18 January 1, 2018 CLOSER

Richard. “I was the one that wouldn’t take it,” she says. “Then, for other reasons that will go in the book, I became a focus of [Jock’s] tyranny. I was terrified all the time. Terrified that I would be forced to fight, and yet I did. Something in me wouldn’t be quieted.” That feisty spirit would later serve her well in her career. “Oddly enough, I think I owe a great deal to how difficult [my stepdad] was,” says the actress, who landed her first TV series, Gidget, at the age of 17 and was offered the lead on The Flying Nun two years later, though she initially turned it down. Due to pressure from Jock, she reluctantly took it, sinking into a deep despair because she longed for more respected roles. “I was so depressed — that kind of depression [where] you gain

20 pounds in two seconds,” Sally, who developed an eating disorder for three years, recalls. “One of the things that saved me was therapy,” Sally admits, and she became laser-focused on finally pursuing her acting dreams and the meatier roles she desired. The confidence she’d built from standing up to Jock also kicked in, and she refused to cower to casting agents who didn’t take her seriously. Her growing confidence led to her winning an Emmy for the 1976 TV miniseries Sybil and an Oscar for 1979’s Norma Rae, though her lingering childhood pain continued to affect her personal life. “I never saw a relationship with any longevity that wasn’t horrible,” says Sally, who had wed her high school sweetheart, Steven Craig, when she was still on The Flying Nun. “We were never destined to have an adult relationship,” she reflects. They divorced in 1975 after having two sons, Peter, now 48, and Eli, 45.

FINDING HER WAY

As a single mom with two young children, “I was hell-bent on giving my boys the kind of childhood they [deserved] regardless of a man,” Sally insists. Adds her friend, “Even though she was busy with her career when Peter and Eli were young, she never shortchanged them.” The same goes

for the actress’ third son, Samuel, now 30, who was born during Sally’s second marriage to producer Alan Greisman from 1984 to 1993. Her highest-profile romance, however, was with Burt Reynolds, in the ’70s. “Burt was the most important influence that came into my life other than my children at the time,” she says of the actor, who chose her as his co-star in 1977’s Smokey and the Bandit. Having been self-conscious about her looks for years (“I could definitely be ugly at the drop of a hat,” she once said), the call from Hollywood’s top hunk was thrilling. “I thought even if the film didn’t work, if he thinks I’m attractive in it, other people will think so, too,” she explains. Their ensuing romance caught her off guard, but she fell hard. “He gave me a feeling that I was sexy, and I wanted to be everything he ever want ed,” she says. “[But] that was ble, because what happened i stopped existing. I dressed fo looked for him, walked for him. Burt was equally smitte “He asked me to marry many times,” Sally reveals, “[but] I knew his heart wasn’t in it. We’d have ended up just feeling terrible.” Burt disagrees. “I think we would have been very happy,” he says, and he called Sally “the love of my 1 life” while promoting his 2015 autobiography, But Enoug About Me. “If anybody asks ab that period of my life, it was a derful time,” Burt says. “I and still am — very proud of h tells Closer. These days, Sally jokes “her door is open to romance, but no one’s been knocking,” her friend shares. “People try to fix her up, but she’s doubtful love’s going to come into her life again. It’s not big priority, and it doesn’t keep her up at night. She’s content with her own company.” After the 2011 death of her mother, Sally bought an apartment in New York near her youngest son, Sam. “Sally always wanted to have that true New York City experience, and

she’s had that for several years now,” her friend says. She splits her time between Manhattan and LA, where her two older sons and her five grandchildren live. “For her, it’s the best of both worlds.” In her downtime, Sally “has a love of needlepoint that can eat up hours a day,” the friend adds. She’s also passionate about current events and putting the finishing touches on her memoir. “She’s a beautiful writer, and she wants to put something out there that can serve as an inspiration for others,” the friend says. “She knows she’s far from being the only one with a difficult childhood, and she wants to show how she became the person she’d hoped to be with the career she always dreamed of having.” Sally credits her ever-growing belief in herself as the secret to her

HER HAPPY BALANCE 1. Sally (with co-star Joe Mantello) won a Tony nod for The Glass Menagerie. The stage is where “I’m most me,” she says. 2. “The three things I’m most proud of in my life are my sons,” says Sally, here with Sam in 2013. 3. “To raise children who go on to be great parents — that’s the Oscar moment in life,” says Sally, here with son Eli, his wife, Sasha, and her grandson Noah.

success. “In my late 50s, I began to embrace myself in a way that I hadn’t been able to before,” she shares. “I’m not as worried about what other people think. That’s a comfortable place to be.” She’s also stopped doing things she doesn’t want to do, an impulse that formerly was “linked to the feeling that I’m not enough.” Once she silenced the negative voices from her past — agents and managers who told her, “You’re not pretty enough; you’re not good enough” to make it — nothing was impossible. “I had to fight like holy hell,” she proudly says of her journey to this happy time in her life. “I found my own voice,” she insists. And to paraphrase her now infamous 1985 Oscar acceptance speech, she likes herself. Right now, Sally Field really likes herself.

ver y parent and child have their own rules about how to get along over the holidays, and Jon Voight and Angelina Jolie are no different. “We don’t talk politics well,” Angelina says of her father, who has been outspoken about his conservative views. “We talk art very well. We’ve found it’s a common language.” And they can always bond over their love for Angelina’s six kids, who range in age from 9 to 16. “Jon and I have gotten to know each other over [his] grandchildren now,” Angelina says. “We’re finding a new relationship, and it’s very, very nice.” That hasn’t always been the case. “We’ve had some difficulties,” Angelina, 42, acknowledges of the long estrangement she felt from Jon, 78, who split with her mom, Marcheline, when she was a toddler. “I didn’t feel close to my father. I felt more my mother’s daughter when I was a child.” After Marcheline’s death in 2007, Angelina and Jon grew closer, and their connection strengthened following her traumatic divorce from Brad Pitt last year. Jon “has been very good at understanding they needed their grandfather at this

time,” Angelina says, adding that her dad has joined them for family therapy sessions. “He knows the rule — don’t make them play with you. Just be a cool grandpa who’s creative and hang out and tell stories and read a book in the library.” Jon is more than happy to do just that. “I love to play with my grandchildren,” he says. “I’m not an armchair grandfather — I’m interactive. The happiest sound for me is sitting in my house and hearing children and their laughter.”

Angelina’s older brother, James Haven, has also mended fences with their father. “It was really a trifecta, meaning she found peace with him, and I found peace,” James, 44, told

A big part of it is just coming to that point where you deal with and solve and rectify things. It’s nice.” It’s also a huge relief for Angelina. The tensions within the family “were a big deal for decades,” said James, noting he’d just gotten off the phone with Jon, who was shooting a film in Kentucky. “It’s a major weight off our shoulders.” Now Jon hopes to be directed in a movie by Angelina, who just earned a Golden Globe nomination for her foreign-language film First They Killed My Father. “I love my daughter, and I’m very impressed by her directing,” he says. “I’m crazy about her and my grandchildren.” For now, the kids remain Angelina’s top priority. “Very honestly, I’ve spent the last year and a half doing nothing but just really being a mom, and it’s the most important thing for me to do,” she says. “I’ll see what projects come, but I’ll see how much I need to balance that with my kids.” What’s the biggest challenge she faces in the year ahead? “Teenagers,” she says with a laugh. fter a 1985 gig, twins Gunnar and Matthew Nelson, then 18, had a meaningful talk with their father, Ricky Nelson. “He’d come to see our show,” Gunnar tells Closer of the 2 a.m. chat with the former Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet teen idol (“Travelin’ Man,” “Hello Mary Lou”). “Out of the blue, he said, ‘I not only love you as my sons, but I admire you as my peers.’ Coming from our dad and our musical hero, that was adefining moment.” Just a month later, Ricky, then 45, died in a New Year’s Eve plane crash on his way to a Dallas concert. “I don’t know if he had a premonition or what,” Gunnar says of that fateful heart-toheart, but he and Matthew, 50, still use their father’s words as motivation to pursue their dreams — and his. Along t touring in support of their own , the twins do special Ricky Nelemembered concert dates, perng his hits and honoring his y. “It’s an ongoing labor of love, an en letter to our dad, who was our est friend,” Matthew tells Closer.

While the twins hit it big on their own — their 1990 debut single, “(Can’t Live Without Your) Love and Affection,” went to No. 1 — matching Ricky’s career success is still a all order. “You’re talking about guy who sold 300 million singles

“Dad was very underrated as an artist,” Gunnar says of Rick, here with his Stone Canyon Band circa 1973.

It was much more than Rick’s music that the boys — who grew up with sister Tracy, 54, and brother Sam, 43 — admired. “He was a great provider. He loved his family,” Gunnar insists, though Rick’s music kept him on the road and away from home more than they would’ve liked. (Their mom, Kristin, divorced Rick in 1982.) The twins’ memories still make them smile, though. “There was a tradition he started that at some point on your birthday, you’d be hit with a whipped cream pie in your face,”

Gunnar reveals. After being on high alert the day they turned 13, the boys rushed over to Rick when he faked a shaving accident shortly before midnight. “He leaned down,” Gunnar continues, “and he had a pie hidden in the sink.Igotnailed—anditwasgreat!” Matthew, who named his son Ozzie, agrees. “Gosh, he was funny. And he was a sweet man. A nice man. I never saw him have a single celebrity moment,” he says, recalling how Rick always took his time with fans, telling his boys, “It’s people like that who make sure we have a home. Delicious Ways to

MELT BELLY FAT These superfoods are rich in nutrients that have been study-proven to flush fat-packing toxins and fire up metabolism to help you slim and energize in 2018!

TURNIPS FLUSH EXCESS FLUIDS

To shed up to 4 pounds this month, enjoy more turnips. According to Yale University scientists, plant compounds in the root vegetable improve the ability of kidney cells to flush excess fluids by up to 22 percent. Tip: Pick the smallest turnips you can find — they become sweet when roasted and make an excellent addition to longsimmering soups.

1

WINE STEADIES BLOOD SUGAR

Unwinding with 4 oz. of wine daily can help shrink your waistline by 3 inches, research from New York’s University at Buffalo suggests. The reason? Alcohol makes muscle cells more sensitive to insulin, the hormone that helps cells absorb and burn excess blood sugar before it can be turned into fat. Looking for a low-cal option? Try an Australian dry white Riesling or a red Barbera.

BEEF REVS METABOLISM

Rich stores of amino acids and zinc in beef work synergistically to activate the breakdown of stored body fat. The effect is so powerful that science from the University of Oklahoma suggests it can help women burn 100 additional calories per day and triple belly-fat loss in a month. Another benefit: Iron and folic acid in beef provide an instant shot of energy.

HAPPY & HEALTHY J

ust in time to ring in the New Year comes research we can toast to: Light to moderate drinking reduces women’s risk of death from heart disease, cancer and stroke by up to 34 percent — and the benefits are greatest for women over 50. Add this to findings that moderate consumption can cut the risk of weight gainby70percent,easechronicaches by 30 percent and boost memory by 27 percent and there’s even more reason to toss back a tipple. “Still, it’s important to keep intake to a moderate level since drinking to excess negatesalcohol’shealthbenefits,”says Cindy Geyer, M.D., medical director of the Canyon Ranch health resort in Lenox, Mass. The good news: Scientistshaveidentifiedwaystohelp maximize the long-term health benefits of alcohol while minimizing thechanceofnext-daymisery(bloat, headaches, fatigue)—evenwhen the drinks are flowing at parties.

POUR WINE THIS WAY Aservingofwineis5ounces,Dr.Geyer notes. “But unwary wine drinkers 40 January 1, 2018 CLOSER

can easily pour more, and depending on the size of the glass, you could end up with a double serving.” Her advice: Fill wineglasses halfway to cut down on overpouring (and over-imbibing). A recent study found that wine drinkers who use the half-glass rule automatically serve themselves 18 percent less than those who don’t.

BE WARY OF LIGHT BREWS You’d think a paler beer would be weaker than a dark one, but that’s not always the case: While a bottle of Guinness Draught contains 4.2 percent alcohol, a Bud Light Platinum contains 6 percent. “That might not sound like a big difference, but the 6 percent beer delivers 44 percent more alcohol,” says Mark Leavey, M.D., a primary care doctor at Mercy Personal Physicians in Lutherville, Md. That makes it easier to cross the

line into intoxication faster. Your best bet? Sip a beer with 5 percent or less alcohol per 12 oz. serving — the amount the body can metabolize in an hour. Hint: The free Beer Buddy app provides alcohol percentages for thousands of beers.

SWAP YOUR MIXER Consider mixing alcohol with juice instead of soda or other caffeinated drinks. “Since caffeine is a stimulant, it can lessen alcohol’s sedating effects — but that sedate feeling can be a valuable cue to how alcohol is affecting you,” notes Dr. Leavey. “Plus, caffeine is dehydrating, so mixers that have it may increase your risk of a hangover.” What’s more, carbonation can accelerate the absorption of alcohol in the bloodstream by nearly 300 percent — an effect that can make you tipsy much faster.

WHAT’S NEW

This New Year’s Eve, top florists are elevating supermarket roses to sophisticated celebration-ready status by showcasing blooms in lush beds of foliage. “Here, the verdant greens allow the velvety red roses to pop,” says floral pro Eileen Johnson. “And scarlet berried sprigs echo the bright blossoms while offering a natural nod to the spirited season. Plus, the arrangement is an ideal height for cross-table conversation.”

42 January 1, 2018 CLOSER

GET THE LOOK

Start by filling a 6-inch cachepot with soaked floral foam. Then to create a base of greens, cut about two dozen 7-inch sprigs of holly and laurel. Insert the foliage into the foam to create a soft, full mound. Next, cut 1 dozen red roses and about 6 assorted berry sprigs to 8 inches. Insert the rose stems, evenly spacing throughout the arrangement. Finish by filling in any empty spaces with berry sprigs.

FLORIST’S SECRET

The simple trick to keeping your rose dome fresh for a week (or more!): Swap your watering can for a turkey baster! Its nozzle makes it easy to get in between the roses while its bulb offers precise control over how much water you dole out. Another expert tip: Since the roses will fade before the foliage, you can save the dome of greens and add in fresh blooms to keep the floral joy going into the new year.

Did The Howdy Doody Show really begin… without Howdy!? And how! As it was rushed from its radio roots to TV on Dec. 27, 1947, the folks on the show (originally called Puppet Playhouse) didn’t have time to make a puppet! So Buffalo Bob Smith pretended Howdy was hiding in a desk drawer for three weeks, voicing his sidekick from there.

Is it true the first use of the word “pregnant” on TV was on Star Trek? It didn’t go boldly there. While Kevin got his wish and made his family disappear, Mac, 37, desired to retreat from the spotlight after turns in My Girl, Home Alone 2 and Richie Rich. He’d eventually appear in pics à la Party Monster and Saved! and on episodes of TV’s The Jim Gaffigan Show, but Mac has seemed content writing, painting, playing with his band, The Pizza Underground, and living in Paris.

Devin Ratray

Bully brother Buzz wanted to feed Kevin to his tarantula. Yet Devin, 40, ate up the chance to appear in pics such as Nebraska and Surrogates, as well as on TV shows from SVU and Girls to The Tick and Mosaic. He’s also a musician and was the focus of the doc Courting Condi — wherein he tries to woo Condoleezza Rice.

Hillary Wolf

Angela Goethals

Whereas snobby sister Linnie thought Kevin was “what the French call les incompetents,” Angela, 40, has been quite adept when called upon to do a variety of parts in theater, TV shows from Phenom to 24 or movies such as Jerry Maguire and Spanglish. She’s even found success narrating audio books.

Michael C. Maronna

Brother Jeff regarded Kevin as “a disease.” But Michael, 40, had a much healthier attitude about siblings from starring as Big Pete on Nickelodeon’s hit ’90s series The Adventures of Pete & Pete. He then moved behind the scenes as an electrician doing lighting on a slew of TV shows from Ugly Betty to Elementary.

ULTIMATE PARTY

Kenneth Branagh’s 50th birthday in 2010 made all of his wishes come true. “I’d just finished [directing] Thor and flew back [to England] from Los Angeles,” the British actor, 57, reminisced to Closer recently at the AMD Britannia Awards. “My Mrs. made a cake. We had the biggest ‘50’ balloon I’ve ever seen.” They also dined at The Fat Duck before watching Derek Jacobi in a performance of King Lear.

A Heartfelt Proposal Kadie Bumpus never thought she’d live to see her wedding day. At age 4, she was given less than a year to live after doctors diagnosed her with a massive brain tumor. The 29-year-old widow was having a hard time facing her first holiday season as a single mom when she found out a Secret Santa paid for the $600 worth of toys she had put on layaway at a local Walmart for her two children. “I can’t explain the burden this takes off of me,” Williams says. “It’s the best gift I could have ever had and is going to make this Christmas a lot easier to bear.”

HEART toheart It’s an exciting time for you. Your movie A Question of Faith opened in theaters…

She’s great and ready to get back to work! Like I’ve said, she’s grace wrapped in giggles.

I wanted to challenge myself as an actor. It’s heavy and dramatic — I play a woman whose life gets flipped upside down.

Was it tough when the show ended?

And you’re in a fun Lifetime film, Wrapped Up in Christmas, as well. I also have a brand called Holiday Love, and we’ve done specials on our channel (holidaylove365.com). My family loves the holidays, just the shift in atmosphere.

Were the holidays fun growing up?

The thing that was hard was that we held our own in the ratings, but didn’t feel we got a proper send-off, given all the show meant to the fans. But I was starting college,Lisa was getting married…we were all moving on.

Was it another tough transition ending your 1995–2001 marriage to producer Johnathon Freeman?

My parents divorced when I was about 5, and when we still lived in New York I told my mom, dad and aunt I wanted a Big Wheel…and ended up with three!

I didn’t take it as a personal failure. It was simply a huge disappointment, compounded by other things that led me into what I call the Dark Ages — this isn’t what I planned for, this isn’t the work I’ve done.

How is your memoir surprising?

Did you think you’d get a second chance?

I’m insanely private, so some may say, “I didn’t knowshewasdivorcedandhadmiscarriages!” I was in a car crash where my friend who was driving was killed, my high school sweetheart cheated on me and I didn’t have a prom date…

I definitely felt that a happy-ever-after ending must not be happening for me. I wanted children, so I thought maybe I was supposed to adopt. I went through a couple other relationships prior to meeting my husband.

You have been through some things...

Do you think you made smarter decisions?

There are fun surprises, too: I did Battle of the Network Stars [in 1984] because I thought, “I’ll get to make Mark Harmon proud and have a hug, so I’m going to run my heart out in the relay race!”

It was important for me to bring wisdom, not baggage. At the same time, you have to have an open mind that everything’s going to be different and what might’ve worked before may not work now.

You talked about making lifelong friends. How’s your Facts of Life co-star Mindy Cohn doing with her cancer battle?

Having two kids is different!

“You can’t get to the peak of a mountain without climbing up it!” — Kim

When I became a mom, I learned that I had more love inside me than I could imagine —

KIM’S JOURNEY TO STARDOM LADIES’ CHOICE Playing Regine on 1993– ’98’s Living Single (with Erika Alexander, Queen Latifah and Kim Coles) “was immensely fun, because she was nothing like me or anything that I’d experienced portraying before.”

BRIGHT EYES “This little girl would grow up to be thankful for everyone and everything that’s been a part of her journey,” said Kim, seen in 1969.

50 January 1, 2018 CLOSER

SPIN CITY After a guest role on Good Times, Kim auditioned for The Facts of Life, a spinoff of the hit Diff’rent Strokes (above). The problem? “Tootie was 12 and I was only 9.” Yet when a producer had a “brilliant, silly” idea for her to roller skate, she won applause. “I also got the job.”

BY GEORGE

and I have a pretty good imagination!

Kim still has fond memories How’s motherhood been for you? of her Facts of Life co-star Raising children can be challenging George Clooney. “As a human and thankless at times. It’s putting being, he’s wonderful. He’s everything and everyone before always been so kind and yourself. But it’s glorious, wonderful very funny, and he did great and amazing! They’re two princes. impressions [of people], like Christopher Sebastian has always been very Lloyd!” helpful and loving, and his brother,

Quincy, is just his favorite person on the planet. They are super, super close.

Is it easy to juggle it all and have a successful career? Not! I stand right there with everybody who’s constantly reinventing their work/life balance. For me, the big revelation was to realize and embrace the fact that balance is not giving equal parts of yourself to everything. I use the example of someone walking a tightrope and holding on to something. I hold on to my faith, my family and my village.

Any benefits to this stage of your life? Age comes with awareness. You stop thinking the world revolves around you!

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

Too bad her husband of 28 years, Cars musician Ric Ocasek, isn’t much help decorating their giant tree. “He just sits around and throws a comment once in a while, going, ‘Watch out so you don’t fall off that 20-foot ladder,’” she shared with a laugh. Once Christmas is over, Paulina, 52, doesn’t need to make New Year’s resolutions to remind herself to show Ric, 68, her affection. “Why make resolutions?” she asks. “It’s like Valentine’s Day — one day where you tell people you love them? “Praise doesn’t mean anything to me. I don’t judge myself,” Chuck once said, but the rock guitarist with the signature duck walk was idolized by every generation of music fans. The day after he passed away on March 18 at 90, “Johnny B. Goode” was the most downloaded of his songs, and artists from Paul McCartney (“He was one of

1926–2017

He insulted us, and we loved it. Only a standup comedian as skilled and endearing as Don, who died at 90 on April 6, could’ve gotten away with calling people “hockey pucks” (and less politically correct terms) and still scored huge laughs. “Johnny Carson came up with ‘Mr. Warmth’ and I just loved it,” Don told Closer of his nickname. “It stuck with me.” And it fit. “He was one of the kindest, most considerate and caring human beings I’ve ever met,” Don’s best friend, Bob Newhart, tells Closer. And he won over a whole new generation of fans as the voice of Mr. Potato Head in the Toy Story films. “Don was a teddy bear,” Bob says. “There will never be another one like him.”

When the former teen idol died at age 67 on Nov. 21, millions of fans were heartbroken — Marcia Brady included. “Deep down I dreamt of being a Partridge,” actress Maureen McCormick admitted of her TV family’s rival brood. “He was always so kind and sweet to me. His memory and love will live on in my heart forever.” Though David worked hard to put his highly publicized drinking battles behind him (“Alcohol does not define me. Mary could, as plucky housewife Laura Petrie on The Dick Van Dyke Show and spunky career gal Mary Richards on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. “You could not ask for a better star,” MTM co-star Ed Asner tells Closer. “She made everyone happy.” But Mary, who died at 80 on Jan. 25, could also get serious, earning an Oscar nod for her

Over a 60-plus-year career, Martin “embraced every role with fire and fierce dedication,” his Mission: Impossible costar and ex-wife Barbara Bain tells Closer. From Crimes and Misdemeanors to Ed Wood and beyond, “his work was his joy,” she says.

Monty’s witty banter with the colorfully dressed contestants on Let’s Make a Deal made the game show host a household name, and he put his fame to good use. “As I got more successful,” he said, “it was incumbent upon me to help other people.”

“I don’t want to spend my life on the road,” Tom said shortly before his 40th anniversary tour with his band the Heartbreakers wrapped up in the fall. Though the rocker looked forward to spending more time with wife Dana York, his daughters and his granddaughter, the “Refugee,” “Breakdown” and “American Girl” singer gave it his all through every single show of that tour, which sadly became his last: He died of a cardiac arrest on Oct. 2 at age 66, having made a career out of doing what he loved best.

Alana had all the doors heightened (including ones at the front entrance, right). “That small touch really opened the space up.”

Alana reunited with ex-hubby George Hamilton and their blended family on the 2015 E! reality show Stewarts & Hamiltons.

“I tend to cook big Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for family,” she says, and serves them in this dining room, which boasts an original Farrah Fawcett painting (right).

“I’ve been in that pool once, but I really like the way it looks!” she says. “I love the fountains. There’s something so peaceful and healing about them.” Alana’s bed is her favorite place to eat and watch TV. “I know they say you’re only supposed to use it for sleeping, but I call baloney on that!”

While she admits “it was not love at first sight,” recalling the “awful” army green paint job, she nevertheless “saw the potential.” And the glass-walled entryway and windows make it feel larger than its 1,841 square feet, as do the lush garden and large pool on her quarter-acre lot. She stripped and restained the tall living room beams, added a skylight in her office and extended the hardwood floors in the living and dining rooms throughout the house. “I’m not sure why — I had three dogs who mutilated them with their nails,” she says. “George would laugh because I made everyone take off their shoes, and then the dogs made mincemeat of the floors!” A decorator pal helped her find modern pieces to mix in with antiques and English traditional items from her home in LA’s Brentwood. With some added Buddhas and Chinese urns, the resulting style is something she calls “contemporary with a Zen feel…maybe Zen-temporary?” she adds with a laugh. In recent years, Alana has redone the kitchen counters and master bath, but the one area she

And though she doesn’t have famous pals over often, she does entertain her famous ex and family. “George was here on Thanksgiving with his son GT, who calls me Auntie Alana,” she smiles. “Ashley is a father now, so I’ll do my grandmother’s Christmas dinner for about 20 people with homemade pies. he won a Golden Globe for 1955’s Picnic and rose to fame in 1958’s classic Alfred Hitchcock thriller Vertigo, and as Kim Novak’s star soared, so did her sleek style. In fact, known as “The Smart Man’s Marilyn Monroe,” Kim’s chic fashion choices helped her rise above the stigmas attached to being a blond bombshell. And at the age of 84, she still wows on red carpets! “Kim uses feminine fabrics and curve-carving silhouettes to her advantage without the need to overshare,” says stylist Ali Levine, who has worked with stars like Rita Wilson and Holly Robinson Peete. “And that really resonates with women of all generations.” And so it’s such a treat to see today’s stars strutting in sultry yet elegant slip dresses — just like Kim did! What she knew: With the right fit (a nipped-in waist, floor-grazing hem and bust-boosting bodice) the style is as slimming as it is sexy. 62 January 1, 2018 CLOSER

YOUNGER IN SECONDS

WHAT’S HER SECRET? Donna Mills

Avocado Oil Restores Shine Thinning hair isn’t an aging woe the Knots Landing alum deals with (just look at those thick tresses!), but straw-like strands added decades to her look in 2014. “Years of color-treating and heat-styling can sap hair of its moisture, leaving it looking dull and dry,” says hairstylist Daniel Koye, who’s worked with Vanessa Williams and Patti LaBelle. For lustrous locks like Donna’s now, he tips to treat hair with an avocado oil–infused mask (like Redken All Soft Heavy Cream Super Treatment Mask, $18, ulta.com). The oil’s moisturizing fatty acids penetrate the hair shaft to rehydrate parched strands from within. To do: In place of conditioner, apply a quarter-sized amount of the mask to damp hair from roots to ends. Let sit 10 minutes; rinse. Use twice a week for results in two weeks.

Sheryl Lee Ralph

This Combo Brightens Teeth A lipstick similar in tone to the Designing Women alum’s skin, coupled with its golden undertones, brought her dull, yellowing teeth into harsh focus in 2013, says makeup artist Amy Zdunowski-Roeder, who has worked with Kristin Wiig and Malin Akerman. While brushing with a mix of 2 tbsp. of hydrogen peroxide and 1 tbsp. of baking soda can help lift stains off teeth, says Zdunowski-Roeder, a swipe of a neutral lipcolor like Sheryl Lee’s now, can help boost the whitening effects. For best results, she tips to look for a shade that’s two to three shades darker than your skin (we like Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Mink, $9, walgreens.com). “The contras helps teeth look instantly brighter in comparison.”

At age 56

Julie Walters Droopy jowls left the Mamma Mia! star looking older at 66 than she does at 67. To blame: “As we age, gravity, along with a loss of elastin — the protein that helps skin retain its shape — causes skin to get lax and sag along the jawline,” says dermatologist Rachel Nazarian, M.D., who treats stars in her New York City office. Her secret to firmer skin like Julie’s now? Birchwood extract. When applied topically, the antioxidant plant extrac has been shown to support elastin, so skin snaps back for a tauter-looking complexion. To do: Apply a dime-sized amount of a serum containing birchwood extract (like L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Triple Power Concentrated Serum, $18, target.com) to the face and neck, using upward motions. Use twice a day for results in under a month.

1991 TALL TALE She was excited to be in Disney’s The Rocketeer since “some of my movies, you blinked and you missed them.” And a romance with co-star Billy Campbell added to the excitement. “[People] want to know if, when he walked into the room, I was immediately smitten.
