foreward National Federation of Demolition Contractors The National Federation of Demolition Contractors (NFDC) is represented on the British Standards subcommittee which prepares the code of practice for demolition (BS6187) and is, along with the Institute of Demolition Engineers (IDE), The Voice of the Global Demolition Industry. Founded in 1941 to help spearhead London’s post-Blitz clean-up campaign, the NFDC’s members are responsible for more than 90% of all demolition that takes place in the UK. Today, the NFDC is committed to establishing safe working practices for its members and to represent their interests in areas such as training, safety, the environment, waste management, industry guidance, legislative changes and codes of practice. introduction Demolition and Refurbishment Information Data Sheets (DRIDS) The DRIDS have been developed to provide the demolition and refurbishment industry with relevant knowledge and practicable information on materials and products that they currently manage, or will be required to manage in the future. With growing legislation and tighter regulation in the design and construction of buildings, structures and infrastructure, the demolition and refurbishment industry has to be better informed on the types of materials and products they will encounter and how best to maximise environmental and economic gain. Our industry has been very successful in the development of plant, equipment, attachments and robotics to maximise potential from the wastes generated. However, the increasing complexity of buildings and composite materials will create increasingly greater challenges if we are not competent in the use of tools and techniques to deconstruct, segregate and pre-treat materials and products before they leave site. The DRIDS provide relevant information on the product, where it might be found, standard to best practice in waste management, guidance on removal, segregation and storage, an indication of the tools required, personal protection equipment health & safety, fixings that may be encountered, further reading and training required.

DRIDS GROUPS The Groups of DRIDS There are twelve groups of DRIDS, each with its own distinct shape, colour and code to ease recognition and be inclusive. In each group, there are a number of DRIDS depending on their material or product make-up. For example the Wood group includes DRIDS that are generally one product such as plywood, chipboard or dimensional timbers. Whereas wood furniture or wood framed glass panel systems may be in the Composites group. The colours have been chosen to reflect those used by BRE, WRAP, ICE and Zero Waste Scotland.

waste streams DRIDS and Materials Resource Efficiency (MRE) Materials Resource Efficiency is the process by which industry adopts the waste hierarchy to maximise the economic and environmental value of materials that are reused, recycled or recovered rather than sent to landfill. The demolition and refurbishment industry’s role is to ensure the maximum amount of materials are recovered during the demolition or refurbishment process so that the reclamation, recycling, recovery and manufacturing industries can maximise their MRE. Utilising the waste stream hierarchy can decrease your carbon foot print for each project. The waste stream is broken down into four available options Disposal, Recovery, Recycling, Reclaim & Reuse. These waste streams range from bad practise to best practise. Outlets are available for each division and can effectively manage demolition arisings from site.

NFDC Drids app is now available to download from the app store. The app features all the content you can find on the DRIDS, but it also includes easy to find outlets and contact details to manage waste from your site. www.nfdc-drids.com

OUTLETS Waste management companies at your finger tips The management of waste from any project can be a huge task. The DRIDS app can help with organising various materials that need to be dealt with professionally. The outlets section of the app and website provides details of waste management companies for specific materials and their contact information. These companies can be easily contacted via the app with links to their phone number and email address at the touch of a screen, alternatively the same information is available through the DRIDS website. This can significantly reduce time spent searching for companies through the current conventional means.

Integrated Project Management The app and the website have an end-user account facility where you can utilise a dedicated project management tool. Within this project management tool you can identify and label the project you are working on, select specific DRIDS for your project, select the outlets that you would like to contact or have contacted for demolition arisings on the project and add notes about the project which can be shared with colleagues within your management team. This function allows unlimited project creation, so all jobs you are either working on or have completed can be accessed at any time for reference. This feature is completely free and available to try for yourself today: www.nfdc-drids.com.
