RISE - RAISING INDUSTRY STANDARDS EVERYDAY
R
A Chairman’s Task Now on our second instalment of our new training and competency quarterly newsletter, I am pleased to say that NDTG RISE will now be a permanent fixture for the industry. Issue 1 received a staggering 2543 views on our online version and 5500 hard copies went out with the Demolition & Dismantling magazine, giving us a total estimated readership of 14,500!
Feedback has been great with many of our members encouraged to see the progress taking place within the Group and throughout the whole of the demolition workforce.
Upcoming in Issue 2 you will find more informative training and competency news including an exclusive look behind the scenes of the first demolition plant simulator course; an interview with the Groups Centre Coordinator Kaila Francis; and a stack load of information on grants, funding and NVQ achievement figures.
A question asked following the release of RISE Issue 1 was: what audience is the newsletter is aimed at? To answer that, RISE was born out of NDTG HQ by the strong administration and management team we have in place. All articles are pulled together by the team and derive from what they believe to be of most interest to its readership. The newsletter is aimed at industry administration and management professionals and those in charge of ensuring they have a competent workforce.
Receiving approximately 750 incoming telephone calls to the training department per month equating to just under 2000 minutes in total, the team at HQ have their work cut out to ensure they offer a friendly and professional service to their members at all times. With this in mind, they were keen to look at new ways to assist the Group’s clients that they deal with on a day to day basis and felt that a newsletter would be a great resource!
As a demolition company director myself, I am as familiar as any with the ongoing (and often tiresome!) requirements in the world of training and competency. However, my team are without doubt the biggest asset to my company and I feel it is my duty to ensure they are safe at all times and have the opportunity to progress through qualifications whilst under my wing. As Chairman of the NDTG, the most valuable message I can offer my fellow members is to encourage a proactive approach to the competency within your workforce. It is all too often that the Group sees cards and certificates expiring and member companies being left with an overwhelming feeling of having to organise courses and qualifications in the nick of time! The NDTG, as a fully established Training Forum through CITB and working with a number of training providers and qualification centres throughout the UK would like to encourage a proactive approach to competency needs moving forward to ensure that collectively we can Raise Industry Standards Everyday (RISE).

Demolition Plant Simulator Foundation Training The NDTG made history at the start of September with their first training course on the world’s first demolition plant simulator. Monday 9th September saw the first session of the Demolition Plant Simulator Foundation Training, which is a two-day course adapted for novice demolition plant operatives. Eleven operatives joined us from five different NFDC member companies completing a classroom training session focusing on foundation knowledge and understanding when using a conventional demolition plant adapted excavator followed by a full day of one to one training on the simulator. The course has been developed for novice operators and for those who need to brush up on their skills as an operator if they have been out of the cab for a while. The training course was initially lead by trainers Ronnie Mould (NDTG) and Duncan Rudall (DCS Training) who have also helped develop this training course. Both trainers were on hand to start the first day of the course where all the operatives were sat down for the classroom based theory. During the classroom-based theory, the trainers covered key areas, which are vital for novice operators including:
• Health and Safety at Work Act • PUWER and LOLER • Safe operation and machine awareness • Machine terminology and safety • Machine maintenance and pre-start checks • Ground conditions
3
Continued After an in-depth day of knowledge, candidates were able to wind down slightly by each taking a few minutes to have a brief taster session on the simulator. This first introduction into the cab allowed them to prepare themselves for the second day of their intense training programme.
4
Continued
Candidates were then invited back in groups of three throughout the rest of the week for a full day’s training solely on the simulator. During each session candidates carried out various exercises on the simulator including – breaking, materials processing, machine movement, bucket exercises, high reach exercises and quick hitch training. All of these exercises were aimed specifically at novice operators to enable them to get used to being in a cab environment, get used to its controls and movement of the machine. 5

Testimonials
A very enlightening experience, having been in a cab many years ago, and the controls are very realistic. How the simulator works and reacts is exactly the same as a machine. Ivan Bingham – Walters Demolition
I found the Demolition Simulator course to be very beneficial in both the theory and practical. The simulator is an amazing bit of kit and is basically the same as being out on site on an actual digger.
I found the course very useful and learnt how an actual machine works. I know feel as though I have gained enough experience to go on site and be confident in operating a real machine.

The course was really good, I learnt a lot about how to drive the machine and how to maintain it. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to get experience driving a digger as you cannot get this experience on site. Dean Morgan – Walters Demolition
This course really gave me an idea into how technical driving machines is. It also gave me the confidence to jump into a machine and have a go, not only for the practical side but also the general knowledge for maintaining a cab. Great course.

Let’s have a natter with Kaila Francis, NDTG Centre Coordinator Newly promoted, Kaila Francis NDTG Centre Coordinater, gives us an insight into the day-to-day running and organising of the training group along with advice to anyone taking on or thinking about training in the demolition industry. RISE: What is the most common question you get on a day to day basis?
KAILA: We experience high volumes of calls through the Group and the most common is about expiring cards and how to renew them. Usually there will be a requirement for an NVQ to upgrade the card and this is still commonly being left to the last possible moment. I cannot emphasise enough how important it is to ensure that candidates are registered for qualifications earlier on.
RISE: I hear you were promoted last year. How has your role changed?
KAILA: I am now Centre Coordinator for the Group and much of my daily duties include overseeing training administration processes in the office, helping to raise quality standards within our competency schemes and working closely with our approved providers, trainers and members. This was certainly a challenge when I took it on, however the support offered by Sophie and the Management Committee has really helped me settle into a role that I absolutely love.
RISE: Can the NDTG offer advice on CITB Grants and funding?
KAILA: There has been some great support offered through the CITB this year where the NDTG have been in a position to offer many free training courses to our members. It is not surprising that there is often confusion when companies claim grant as some are claimed direct from us and others require forms completing through CITB. Having said that, please do give me a call if you are unsure. Furthermore, CITB has recently updated their website to ensure a user friendly experience with grant claims. The NDTG can of course offer advice to support the CITB service however the most up to date information can always be found by visiting www.citb.co.uk/levy-grant/about-grant/
RISE: What resources are available to help member company’s administration staff understand the demolition competency schemes in place?
KAILA: This is an area that the NDTG training team are really passionate about. We fully understand how difficult it is to keep abreast of training and competency requirements and therefore we recently updated our CCDO Scheme Booklet which offers a clear step by step guide on how to obtain any of the cards within the CCDO scheme. We produced this using our Ricky Rightway & Basher Bob characters to make it much more user friendly. The website is also a great resource with clear step by step processes and we are finding that traffic to the site is continually increasing. Finally, if you are really finding it difficult to put your training house in order, either myself or one of the team would be happy to come and visit your premises free of charge to go through your training needs.
RISE: Is there anything else you would like to say to the readers?
KAILA: I would like to highlight that the NDTG team is here to support our members training and competency needs. Any questions, queries or concerns, please do fire them through to us. The very professional training administrators and I are always at the other end of the phone or email. The Training Group is far from just taking bookings for training courses, we are here to deliver quality Information, Advice & Guidance (IAG) to the whole of the industry to ultimately ensure we are Raising Industry Standards Everyday. 8
North of the Border - NDTG Scotland NDTG (Scotland)’s main objective of qualifying the demolition workforce continues to pick up momentum. Since the first edition of the Rise magazine, the following initiatives have taken place in Scotland: Apprenticeship Programmes
The training programme for our Modern Apprenticeship Programme No. 3 has now completed and we are now ready to move to the SVQ assessment process. We have 10 candidates on this programme and it is hoped that this will complete in April 2014, with all qualified at Level 2 and achieving their full CCDO Topman card. Our specialist apprenticeship programme (no. 4) which kick started in May 2013 continues to move to programme, with 9 candidates enrolled.
Due to demand, NDTG (Scotland) are excited to be able to report that we are due to commence another specialist apprenticeship programme on the 28th October 2013 with a further 12 candidates. We have also been working closely with Jenny MacIver our Specialist Support Manager (NSAC Scotland) in regards to the possibility of undertaking a further programme at a facility up north, so we can offer this opportunity to our northern members, and are happy to announce that we have a further 9 candidates put forward for this northern course and are in the process of identifying a suitable NDTG (Scotland) satellite training centre, at a location up north, where the training for this programme would be able to be facilitated. We are hoping to commence this programme in December 2013 and watch this space for updates on this!
Specialist UpSkilling Programme – Demolition Supervision
Our specialist upskilling programme did commence on the 21st August 2013 and is now half way through the 12-week distance learning training programme, with 8 candidates on board. The Level 3 NVQ qualifications will follow in the new year.
CCDO Manager Course
Our 5-day CCDO Manager course commenced on the 19th September 2013 with 14 candidates enrolled and John Woodward the NDTG approved trainer. Allan Lock, Level 6 NVQ assessor, will be attending day three of this course to give the candidates an overview of the manager qualification and Allan continues to work with us on the manager qualifications from our previous course which completed in May 2012. Out of the 12 candidates who completed this course, 9 have undertaken the VQ assessment process with – so far - 8 qualifying in the Level 6 NVQ.
Future Initiatives – Watch this space!
NDTG (Scotland) is currently in the throes of developing a demolition small plant pre-assessment centre with a practical small plant training area. In the near future we will be offering our members pre-assessment training for plant operatives who are looking to undertake CPCS technical tests in small demolition plant. This pre-assessment centre will also be used for the 2 days allocated training under the new Specialists Apprenticeship Programmes in regards to training on the Demolition Skid Steer. The pre-assessment training is still being developed and members will be updated shortly. 9

The CPCS Scheme changes are now in force! As many of you will be aware, CPCS have recently introduced a revised renewal process for blue competent operator cards. Sophie Cox (Group Manager) answers your questions: How is the test delivered?
Taking the delivery form of the recognised CITB Health, Safety & Environment tests, the renewal process will require an operator to carry out CPCS plant specific modules through a touch screen test to renew the categories on a competent operator card.
Why have CPCS made these changes?
CPCS claims that the new renewal test helps to ensure that key knowledge of each plant category or group of categories is maintained.
So how will this work if an operator has more than one item of plant on their card? Will they need to take more than one test? CPCS are fully aware that many operators are multi-skilled on a variety of plant and this is certainly no different for our demolition plant operators out there, with many operating more than 5 items of kit. CPCS have worked tirelessly to ensure that operators with a number of categories are not penalised through the revised renewal test process. Therefore, the renewal test is split into test modules. Each module has 15 randomly selected multiple choice questions, which needs to be answered within 15 minutes.
CPCS have grouped many similar categories of plant together into a module so that you may only need to take one test for a number of items of plant. For example, if you are due to renew a Crusher category and Screener category, these have been grouped into one 15 question module. Cardholders will need to pass each relevant module in order to retain each category when renewing their Blue Cards.
How do I know which renewal modules I need to book?
You can find out which modules your operator needs to take by visiting: www.citb.co.uk/cards-testing/cpcs-renewal-test and clicking on the Module Matcher.
12
The CPCS Renewal Process
Are the renewal tests going to incur a cost?
In life nothing comes for free, however, CPCS have found ways to keep the costs to a minimum. If you book between 1 and 5 modules, the cost will be ÂŁ25. More importantly, this includes the normal cost of the card anyway. Every 1-5 modules thereafter will incur a further cost of ÂŁ25.
How do I book the test?
You can book online through the CPCS step by step booking process or by contacting them by telephone 0344 994 4488. Lines are open between 8am and 8pm Monday to Friday, and 8am to midday on Saturdays.
Is there revision material for the operators?
CPCS have developed some very handy and informative module specific factsheets. They are available to view, download and print free of charge through the CPCS website www.citb.co.uk/cards-testing/cpcs-renewal-test/preparing-for-cpcs-test
Do I still need to take the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test? Yes. This can be taken at the same time as your CPCS renewal test.
Is there still a requirement for a logbook to renew the card? Yes. This criteria must be met in addition to the renewal test.
Where can I find further information?
I encourage all personnel and operators involved in the renewal of CPCS competent operator categories to visit the user-friendly CPCS website today. These changes are now in full swing and it is important you meet the criteria of the scheme to renew your cards. 13
Driver CPC – Don’t leave it too late! Professional drivers of lorries over 3.5 tonnes (licences C, C+E, C1, C1+E ) have less than 12 months left until the first deadline for Driver CPC training in September 2014. It is vitally important for all lorry drivers not to leave it too late to complete their 35 hours of Driver CPC Training as this will increase demand for courses and create a last minute panic. RISE Reports. If the deadline arrives and you drive professionally without a Driver CPC you will be committing an offence. If you’re an operator and you cause or allow your drivers to drive without Driver CPC – you’ll also be committing an offence. Employers and drivers each face a £1,000 fine if they are found to be driving without their Driver Qualification Card (DQC). Driver CPC which stands for ‘Certificate of Professional Competence’ was introduced across the EU to maintain high driving standards and improve road safety. Once the first deadline has passed drivers enter the next 5 year cycle of continuing professional development during which they must complete a further 35 hours of training. Driver CPC is here to stay and will carry on throughout a lorry driver’s career – so let’s embrace it. The National Demolition Training Group has been contacted by experienced and professional provider Focale Training who are now able to arrange Demolition Industry specific Driver CPC Training courses to complete your 35 hour requirement, including the Demolition Driver CPC Safety course. Call us today for further information.
Qualifying the Workforce Together The NDTG both sides of the border are now pleased to see competency taking the lead throughout the demolition workforce. With individuals at all levels on site now being given the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications, the demolition industry has come a long way over the last few years. Jim Caldwell (NDTG Past Chairman) reports. With NVQ/VQ’s (QCF’s) now firmly in place for the Demolition Topman, Demolition Supervisor, Demolition Manager and the Demolition Plant Operator, we now have robust and recognised competency schemes in place to ensure a fully skilled workforce on our demolition sites across the UK.
Having built on our improved NVQ/VQ infrastructure in Issue 1 of RISE and highlighting our recent commitment to offering a quarterly ‘Qualifying the Workforce’ news bulletin on the NDTG website, I would once again like to inform members that the NDTG both sides of the border and our approved centres, Northern Safety and Practical Consulting are fully functional to deliver your NVQ needs.
The delivery of the NVQ/VQ’s is a moving beast with continued standardisation and development taking place amongst the centres by working with the National Specialist Accredited Centre (NSAC). With competency now firmly in place for the roles outlined above, our focus now turns to competency for our demolition asbestos removal operatives. With the NFDC now a key stakeholder within the Asbestos Removal Management Institute (ARMI) and holding positions on many asbestos related committees, the industry is in a prime position to ensure competency amongst our asbestos removal workforce.

An Ode to Temporary Works To TWC or to TWS that is the question, whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer? NDTG Lead Trainer/ Assessor Iain Kirk reports Not exactly Shakespeare I know, but it’s the very question being asked by most demolition companies today. Contractors must be able to demonstrate that they have in place effective arrangements for controlling risks arising from temporary works.
The Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) is responsible for ensuring that the company’s procedures for the control of temporary works are implemented on site. It is essential that those selected to act as TWC are competent with relevant up-to date formal TWC training, in addition to having experience of the relevant types of temporary works and formal academic qualifications to HND level or similar appropriate to the complexity of the project at hand.
Although not normally the designer, the TWC is responsible for ensuring suitable designs are prepared, checked and implemented on site in accordance with the relevant drawings and specifications. They will create and maintain a register of temporary works for each project and ensure all parties are consulted and informed on changes to make as a project proceeds. On larger sites, or where a number of sub-contractors are being used, such as scaffolder’s, steel erectors etc. it is often appropriate to appoint one or more Temporary Works Supervisors (TWS). A TWS is responsible to the TWC and assists them in the day to day supervision of temporary works. Again it is essential that those selected to act as TWS are competent with formal TWS training, and also having experience of the relevant types of temporary works.
The NDTG has worked alongside several stakeholders and training partners in the development of both TWC and TWS training, and can arrange courses to suit your requirements.
The NDTG offer courses for Temporary Works Supervisor and a Temporary Works Coordinator 2 Day Course. For more information on these courses please visit: www.ndtg.org/courses/uk 17

The Demolition Plant Simulators head to The NEC! The NFDC and NDTG will be showcasing the Demolition Plant Simulator from Thursday 14th November to Saturday 16th November to a brand new generation of future operatives... Working with CITB at this year’s 'The Skills Show' held at The NEC, Birmingham we aim to use this opportunity to promote the demolition industry as a career path for the younger generation. The event will be packed with young people from up and down the country who will be thinking about their future career, possible apprenticeships and what skills they require to take on their chosen career. At the event, we will be holding supervised taster sessions on the simulator to those who have an interest in the demolition industry. The NFDC and NDTG will be on hand to provide them with all the information and advice they need on the industry, from training through to the various employment levels within a demolition company. We are thrilled to be able to use this opportunity as the voice of the global demolition industry and to make an impact on those choosing demolition as a career.
If you know any young person wanting to start a career in demolition, come along to The Skills Show – best of all it’s free of charge! This really will be a fantastic event to encourage young people into deciding their future career and we cannot wait to be a part of it.
You will be able to find us in the CITB area.
