A young ad exec prepares for a blind date as CNN coverage of 9/11 plays in the background. The evening takes startling turns when she discovers that her twin sister may be a casualty of the attacks. Variety magazine describes as “…a poignant, thought-provoking, and, yes, essentially amusing piece on the subject [of 9/11]. Indeed, this play offers a lesson in how the theater can deal with such a momentous event without being trite, maudlin, trivial, or disrespectful.”

Riki Kölbl Nelson
painter
grew up in Austria, went to college and graduate school in North Carolina and Minnesota, traveled through the United States on a Greyhound Bus pass, spent months in the Far East and in Brittany, but lives mostly in Northfield where she maintains a studio on Fifth Street. Riki will be part of the Open Studio Tour in October. Riki says, “ I use a variety of mediums and styles. My underlying theme is the energy inherent in all things, animate and inanimate; I explore different manifestations of it.” In her recent work Riki circles back to a previous theme: images of clothing to convey moods, memories, stories. Rose-Marie James glass artist
is an experienced glass artist of 27 years and owner of Dream in Glass Studio of New Prague, Minnesota, and began kilnforming glass in the early 1990s. A European background and time spent in Africa enriched her creations with elements of vibrant colors and light saturation; moving to Minnesota pushed her interest to a larger scale. Stained glass, sandblast etching, fused-art glass and hand-painting glass now round out James’ repertory. Rose-Marie says, “Hot glass is mesmerizing when you see it melting, moving like a river of lava, and forming ribbons and shapes, creating its own design. So unpredictable but so awesome.” Her art can be found in many private collections in Europe, Florida and in the Twin Cities, as well as local galleries.

love of photography started as a young child. His primary focus revolves around landscapes and nature, and his fascination with colors, shadows and shapes empowers him to communicate an emotional connection through his photographs. He has traveled throughout the United States and the Caribbean. He also spent two weeks capturing Africa’s breathtaking sights in 2008 (Kenya and Egypt). His collection includes images that reflect his love of, and concern for, the earth and its relationship to our environment. Todd’s dream is to focus solely on photography as a career, and is at a point in his life where he can devote more time to his true passion. explains: “Photography helps me see everything around me with more tenderness, noticing beauty where I might otherwise overlook it. I’ve learned that each moment is distinct and unrepeatable. In a split second the light changes, the subject changes, I change. As a poet and photographer, I find words and images fluid – not quite interchangeable, but closely related, with arresting visual images giving rise to poems and poems coloring how I view the world through my camera lens. For the past decade, I have worked as a professional photographer, participating in annual art fairs, showing work in galleries, and selling work to corporate collections. I also continue to work, publish, and publicly read poetry, fiction and non-fiction.”

paints historical subjects, such as historical artifacts and natural history specimens, in a “still life” format or as “historical posters,” in which historical objects are showcased with an early to mid-20th Century style. Forty of his historical paintings were painted from life in the galleries of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, 2001-2008, and were exhibited there in a solo show in 2008. They were also seen in solo shows at the Northfield Arts Guild in 2010, at the Red Wing Art Association in 2011, and in several group shows at the Anderson Center for Interdisciplinary Studies, 2003-2009.

states: “I am a representational painter – I can’t help it. The beauty of this world doesn’t need my interpretation but I’m driven by each face, each tree, each rain cloud, to try my hand anyway. I thank God for this gift of obsession.” Largely a self-taught painter, Marsha honed her craft through workshops, courses, classes, and lots and lots of practice. “An accurate drawing is the foundation of a successful likeness” she says, “and the act of applying color requires atmospheric perspective (landscape) and warm vs. cool values (portraiture). Both convey realism. My ultimate goal for each painting is to be able to say, ‘I was there; I looked upon this field, this building, this fellow human being – and rejoiced!’” more info: MKMK Studios, 304 Washington St., #4, Northfield • 612/245-2339 www.mkmkstudios.com • mkmkpainter@gmail.com
Carla Thompson painter
says: “I am inspired by simple things in life. Bright colors are truly my friends! It is what makes me feel alive and energized. The use of an unexpected color combination brings a smile to my face. Painting on wood feels natural. I enjoy collecting, cutting, sanding and adding color to it. The texture, smell and weight are always unpredictable. Allowing the imperfections of the wood to speak to the viewer adds a sense of where the creative process originated, and might even be a gentle reminder to be content with the imperfections of life.”
TimLloyd potter
explains, “Coffee cups, flowerpots, spice jars, dinnerware – we spend our days surrounded by vessels. Appreciating their usefulness, we often fail to notice the aesthetic and meaningful nature of vessels. During recent trips to Japan, I became fascinated with the tea ceremony water kettles because they function not only as containers but as eloquent symbols. They’re a combination of the vessel form in utility, but they also embody a set of values. The message these metal forms communicate to me is a reverence for materials and a deep respect for process. I make my vessels in silver and copper.” Tim earned his BFA Degree from Kent State University in 1960, and an MFA Degree from RIT, School for American Craftsmen in 1964 before coming to Northfield to teach at Carleton College. His work is in collections at the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, Renwick Gallery and Air and Space Museum, Goldstein Museum of Design, University of Minnesota, and Grandhand Gallery, St. Paul.

Jeanne Miller
painter
Gertude Jeanne Ingraham was born in Oklahoma City in 1921. As one of five children growing up during the Great Depression, she needed to rely on her imagination and ingenuity to create “the good times.” After marrying returning serviceman Ralph Miller in 1945, Jeanne lived in Oklahoma and Nevada before spending 43 years in Montana. During this time she raised two children, funneling much of her creativity into sewing, quilting, cooking and baking for others. She has always loved nature and gardening, which is reflected in many of her paintings. Widowed nine years ago, Jeanne moved to Northfield to be closer to her children and grandchildren. She took a painting class offered through the Northfield Arts Guild and, at the age of 83, discovered a talent that had been covered for too many years. Now 90, she has been exhibited at the Northfield Manor and various other places.
David Perez photographer
A long-time lover of photography, David converted to digital photography six years ago. An experienced software engineer and database designer, digital photography was the perfect blend of art and technology for David, who has developed his expertise in photography and the digital darkroom, and often teaches seminars and workshops on a variety of photographic subjects. Most of David’s work comes from the natural world around Minnesota. His interests, however, are wide ranging, and he can often be found photographing events from air shows and motorsports, to rodeos and the soap box derby during this year’s DJJD. David says, “I try to capture the beauty of the world around us, and evoke happiness, harmony, and restfulness in the viewers of my work.” David’s work has been shown in galleries in Minneapolis and his prints will be part of the October showing at the Northfield Arts Guild.

Lucky Rimpila stained glass artist
explains: “I have been creating stained glass art since 2002. Stained glass to me is poetry in a visual perspective. The interpreter takes from each piece something that is relevant to them and they can visualize their own verses from each piece and color. I like to create pieces that represent the outdoors as well as historical landmarks. I also like to do pieces that represent my faith journey. Stained glass to me is my escape into another realm where I can be creative as well as expressive and each person who views it can take from it their own story.”

Field (‘Plein Air’) paintings are impressionistic, with thick application and sometimes fantastic color imaginings. Florals, waterfalls, older buildings are favored subjects. My vision is informed by a deep desire to explore and express the spiritual energy and intent that animates all things. This life force is the underlying subject matter of all my work. Making art is visiting the inner worlds and painting what I see. It is a visual tightrope, bringing back pieces of an alternate reality in tangible visible form.
painter
is a watercolor artist and teacher living in Northfield. Her paintings express in shape, color and value her love for nature; Kathy looks to the beauty of the world around her and is always attracted to subject matter that exhibits a strong essence of light. Although painting in a realistic manner, she sees the composition as an abstract arrangement. She is most inspired when there is a dramatic contrast between the values within the composition, the lightest lights placed in juxtaposition to the darkest darks for this is what turns the ordinary into the extraordinary. This powerful use of light, along with the application of deeply saturated colors and rich texture are the common threads seen in all of her artwork.
I am always experimenting and new subject matter and forms of expression are coming through at this time. Change is the constant.”

Northfield Living Treasures Aware – Nomination Wanted The Arts and Culture Commission of Northfield is once again seeking nominees for its annual Northfield Living Treasures Award. Inaugurated in 2010, Northfield’s Living Treasure’s Award, sponsored by the Northfield News, honors those individuals who, over a period of time, have made significant contributions to Northfield in, through, or on behalf of arts and culture, so as to enhance the reputation of the city and the quality of life of its citizens. The first two recipients of the award, last year, were sculptor and visual artist Ray Jacobson who contributed the Bridge Square Fountain sculpture and the Harvest sculpture along the river walk to enhance the city; and actress and theatre director, Myrna Johnson, founder and long-time artistic director of the Northfield Arts Guild theatre. Normally, one recipient will be named by the ACC each year: either a practitioner in one of the arts or a supporter/advocate/arts or cultural leader. The award is one of recognition and has no financial value. The recipient’s photo and biographical information are displayed at City Hall along with his or her name engraved on a permanent plaque.
Awards will be made in person by the ACC, the Mayor, and a representative of the Northfield News at a public ceremony early in the new year. Criteria for nomination are adapted from the United Nations guidelines to countries, states and cities who also offer such awards: • The nominee must have amassed a body of work that demonstrates consistency of excellence. • The nominee must be an inspiration to others. • Personal admirable attributes that the nominee may possess include: kindness, courage, wisdom, grace, authenticity, humor, humility, respectfulness and generosity. • The nominee must be a Northfield-area resident. • The nominee is encouraged to serve the community and share their expertise for a period of no less than 12 months from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31 during the year after receiving the award, to the extent they are able. Nomination forms must be co-signed by three persons without family ties to the nominee. The nominee must also sign the form, indicating his/her willingness to be considered. The ACC invites Northfielders to submit the name of anyone whom they feel is deserving of the award by Oct. 31. Nomination forms can be picked up at the Northfield News, the Library, the Northfield Arts Guild, the Historical Society and at City Hall.

HISTORIC
HAPPENINGS
NORTHFIELD STYLE By Susan Hvistendahl
Sutton’s Artfulness Conquers NYC (and Beyond)
And now Sutton is being featured in “Historic Happenings” for our special October visual arts issue. Well, perhaps this honor is far down on the list of his achievements this year, but Sutton does have a fondness for Northfield and for St. Olaf as the “launching pad” of his successful career. Sutton, an art major, took a Manhattan Interim course in January of his sophomore year, visiting artists and exploring art galleries and the city. Now, Sutton says, he is “one of the artists St. Olaf students visit” for this course. Sutton is glad he went to a good liberal arts college and not a school specializing in art, as is often the case with East Coast artists he has met. Says Sutton: “I feel lucky I went to St. Olaf and got a well-rounded education. I am grateful for classes such as writing, religion and philosophy which inform my work.”
It’s been a good year for New York City artist Sutton appreciated the outlets St. Olaf provided for showcasing artistic work on campus. Sutton set up exhibitions for Ward Sutton, St. Olaf Class of 1989. Four of his cartoons were published in the New York- his art, designed T-shirts for dorms and posters for a campus band (which flowered into his making distinctive rock concert er. In April he drew cover art for a special posters in the 1990s). Sutton had also devoted a lot of time to comics issue of the Village Voice (described in the Washington Post as a “glorious menagerie of mashups inspired by cartooning greats”). In May he was awarded a Gold Medal by the Society of Publication Designers for “Tea Party Comics” created for the Boston Globe last fall. These parodies of comics, drawn in the guise of a Tea Party artist, also won Sutton two prizes from the Society of Newspaper Designers. His 1997 illustration of the band Prodigy has been on display since September at the Museum of American Illustration in NYC in an exhibit of artwork which has appeared in Rolling Stone Magazine “Superhero: Semi-Self-Portrait of the Artist Sutton’s Award-winning 1987 Manitou MesCourtesy of Ward Sutton senger cartoon. the Manitou Messenger paper as graphics and back page editor, creating editorial cartoons, a humor column and a weekly comic strip “Ole Road.” (See box.) During Sutton’s junior year at St. Olaf, he received a first place prize for best editorial cartoon in a collegiate newspaper at the Minnesota Newspaper Association convention for his cartoon about the Twins’ World Series victory in 1987.
Sutton had been distinguishing himself in the world of poster art, creating limited edition silk-screened brightly colored posters of bands such as Beck, Blues Traveler, Pearl Jam and Phish through the San Francisco company ArtRock. But it was a poster for a Broadway show that “completely changed my career,” Sutton says.
Sutton, a 1985 graduate of Edina High School, had been encouraged in his drawing talents at an early age by his teachers. A sixth grade teacher even took comic strips he and a friend had drawn, laminated them and made them into a bound book. Another teacher put a caricature he had done in a display case which, Sutton says, “got me excited and made an impact.” An avid comic book reader and collector, Sutton was inspired particularly by the comic strip “Bloom County” which he talked about with friends every day and emulated in his drawing. Sutton’s poster for the Broadway show
The break came when Sutton did a drawing of John Leguizamo for the Broadway show “Freak” in late 1997. The poster, in bright Day-Glo colors, was seen all over the city. Innovative, not photo-based, “It just jumped off the wall, raised my profile and got the attention of art directors,” says Sutton. In February of 1998, Sutton had his first poster art exhibition in New York. This exhibit toured to Minneapolis, Seattle, Boulder and Austin, Texas, in 1999.
Sutton’s art was bringing him increased recognition in other avenues. His portrait of Prince Charles was on the cover of New York Times Magazine in November of 1998. In May of 1999, the New York “Freak” was a career-changer in 1997. After graduation from St. Olaf, Sutton had Courtesy Ward Sutton. Times published his first of many “Opa weekly comic strip “Ward’s Cleaver” in Art” cartoons on the Op-Ed page. Sutton the Twin Cities Reader. He moved to Seattle contributed a bi-weekly cartoon “That’s in 1991, married his college classmate Sue Unkenholz in 1994 Entertoonment!” to TV Guide from 2000-03. He produced art and designed and illustrated concert posters for bands in the Historic Happenings continued on next page. emerging Seattle music scene. Sutton had just initiated a comic strip “Schlock ‘n’ Roll” in which he was skewering trends in popular music for a Seattle music newspaper, The Rocket, when he and his wife moved to New York in 1995. This strip was picked up by the Village Voice in 1998. Sutton broadened the scope of the strip beyond music, renamed it “Sutton Impact” in 2002 and it ran until 2007. A book, Sutton Impact: The Political Cartoons of Ward Sutton, was published in 2005. Sutton continues as a frequent contributor to the Voice.

Sutton has done illustrations for Esquire, Time, Entertainment Weekly, Sports Illustrated, The Nation, Onion and many other publications. Sutton has also been involved in the field of animation. Sutton advised young artists to head for New York, be persistent and give publishers or directors “something to remember you by.” Sutton said at one time he had bleached his hair, and people knew him years later as “that guy with the really blond hair.” When Sutton comes to Northfield, there is one person he is always sure to reconnect with, St. Olaf art professor Wendell Arneson. Sutton says, “I cannot overstate the positive influence Wendell has had on me and my work. As my professor, my adviser at St. Olaf, and now my friend, he is a model of integrity as an artist and as a person. With his great talent, his keen eye, and his intuitive sensibilities, he was an incredible mentor to me and his work is engaging and inspiring. In short, Wendell rocks.”
Sutton does monthly reviews of books in both words and cartoons called “Drawn to Read” for Barnes & Noble online (bnreview. Sutton’s animation art is featured on barnesandnoble.com). In it, Sutton had written about his career goal: to work as a successful artist in New York City. Turns out Arneson was right. Sutton has been given accolades by his peers, publishers and the public for his uncanny ability to parody drawing styles of many other cartoonists. He displayed this talent in the Manitou Messengers in the December issues of 1987 and 1988, treating fellow Oles to comic parodies of “Scarfield” (“Garfield”), “Gloom County” (“Bloom County”), “Deniss the Homicidal Menace,” and so on. Sutton parodied 20 comics, giving them a rightward slant, for his award-winning “Tea Party” comics for the Boston Globe last fall. These included Hagar (“Horribly Misrepresented by the Liberally-Biased Media”) saying, “I’m fed up with big government over-regulating our raping and pillaging!” and “The Family (Not a Circus, a Sacred Institution)” showing the children wailing, after watching Fox News: “Pres’dent Osama is gonna kill Gran-ma with Death Panels.” Sutton told the Globe his favorite parody was “Family Circus” because the “fearful hysteria embodied by Tea Partiers seems a natural fit coming from the mouths of irrational little children.” Sutton added that the best response he has gotten from the Tea Party comics was a message of “resounding praise” from the “Usual Gang of Idiots” at Mad Magazine.
Flaten Art Museum
Sutton’s cover art in the Village Voice of April 6 of this year takes his talent a step further, as he draws traditional comic book characters as they might be portrayed by other comic artists. For example, a surprisingly curvaceous Olive Oyl is drawn in the style of R. Crumb, Charlie Brown in the action comic style of Jack Kirby.

Sutton’s mentor at St. Olaf, Wendell Arneson, admires the inspired versatility of Sutton and says, “It is always magical to see what he comes up with in his art.”

As an artist and writer I’ve found that you may have all the talent in the world, but without the drive and motivation it will not get you far. I credit my years as an IllustratorDraftsman in the Navy, my ‘live out loud” nature, and creative energy for my being able to make a living doing what I love! I may not have a huge mansion or a fancy car, but I am thankful for and love and enjoy everything and everyone that I have in my life. I find inspiration for my various projects and passions in both every day life and the surreal (also known as my imagination). I meet some fascinating people and have much joy in my everyday life. I have lived in Uptown for just over a month and I already have 2 mural jobs here! It’s amazing how you can manifest exactly what you need when you are following your legitimate path. Just Curious about
in the beginning there was the doodle:
Carla Thompson By Felicia Crosby
Carla Thompson’s colorful, exuberant art is as fresh and heartwarming as a hug from your best friend. It comforts you when you’re down, celebrates your good times, and reminds you that there is the potential for joy in every moment of every day. Kind of like the artist herself. Here’s Carla on color, wood’s beguiling imperfections, and why you’ll never see her on Glee:
I was always doodling when I was a kid, but the true passion struck when I finished college, started my very first full time job and ALL I thought about was what I would create when I got home.
bet ween geometry and gym: I was in a few musicals (seriously, I can NOT sing) and tried to take as many art classes as possible. I remember designing a few of logos for different organizations.
college pursuits? I did! It was the only thing that ever appealed to me at the time. I ended up with a degree in Graphic Design/Industrial Technology. I wish now that I would have stayed awake during my art history courses. I get kind of sleepy just thinking about it.
which came first: the love of line, or the love of color? The love of line came first. I was always afraid of the rules that applied with color. Now that I stopped following rules I love color!

why wood? The short answer is that I love the imperfections of wood. I mostly use scraps that would be tossed, and that makes me feel good. The end product does not have to be framed or covered in glass. This keeps the cost down and makes an original painting affordable.
…..and on the iPod? I’m inspired by all music! Lately I andora with Brett Dennen, Adele, P Never Shout Never, Missy Higgins, Mumford and Sons, A Fine Frenzy, Grace Potter, Regina Spektor...
a most unusual project:
That would have to be a custom mural I painted. The husband handed me several nude photos of him, his wife, and a few other people and I recreated a nude beach scene from their favorite vacation spot. It was tasteful, but I really, REALLY don’t want to do that again.
a natural fit with kids: For the past few years I have been a guest artist at Sibley Elementary and Artech in Northfield. It’s very sweet when a group of fourth graders surrounded me, asking for an autograph!
the marriage of lively art and great words: sometimes poignant, sometimes laugh-out-loud funny and always thoughtful…. That’s a generous compliment. Thank you! I write about half of the sayings. They turn out the best when I’m exhausted and I don’t have time to re-think the thoughts. It still surprises me how many people relate to my weird sense of humor. Continued on next page

If you could only use three colors from now on, what three couldn’t you live without? Red, Blue and Green! (that’s cheating). I guess today it would be Black, Red and Turquoise.
but your kids could be on Glee:
Samara and Jorja have quickly passed me with their creative talents. They both share a love for photography, music (THEY can sing) and too many crafty projects to mention.
Proudest accomplishment, |and what’s on deck:
Raising two amazing girls with a LOT of laughter and love. I’m currently producing product (painting on wood) for fall shows and Christmas boutiques. Hopefully some travel in there somewhere?

what famous person should we send one of your pieces to?
Shakespeare...as a thank you since I use his quotes often (…and I probably owe him some money).
what’s the dream project? Being able to support myself financially as an artist is my dream project. Continuing to inspire others and have fun while doing this will be a dream come true!
tea or coffee when you’re working....?
Coffee in the morning. I can’t wait!
