They Came for No Good – and Got it Handed Right Back to Them

By Felicia Crosby

The Entertainment Guide is drawn to you. Won’t you return the compliment?

Since 1948, Northfield has celebrated the courage of ordinary townsfolk in the face of evil with the internationally renowned Defeat of Jesse James Days. A five-day event that runs from Sept. 4 to 8, it features something for everyone, as the tens of thousands who attend annually will attest, and includes heart-stopping regular reenactments of what’s come to be called “The Northfield Raid.” Come for the fine arts fair, the rodeo, the parades and food, carnival, car show or just to see Jesse and the boys get whupped – this is a weekend full of Northfield past and present, all at its best. For more information and a full listing of all the goings-on, see their ad on page 48 or go to djjd.org.

…and on getting Shot All to Hell

The 6th annual Visual Arts Issue of The Entertainment Guide is coming in October, and we want you in it. This beautiful and popular issue is jam-packed with regional art and artists and a trusted resource for people looking to see who’s who in the regional art scene – which means it’s not complete without you. How to do it? This is easy: just send a short bio and a few images of your work to info@northfieldguide.com, or call 507/663-7937 for further information; we welcome artists of all ages and levels of experience. The best part? It’s free! There is limited space (and it does fill up!). Make sure to send us your info by Sept. 15 to be considered.

It’s considered the most famous bank robbery of the 19th century, and here in this neck of the woods we pride ourselves on knowing a bit about it. But like many famous events that slip into mythology, how much of what we hear about the James-Younger Gang is actually true? And what compelled them to dedicate their lives to crime? Join author and historian Mark Lee Gardner as he shares fascinating findings from his new book Shot All to Hell: Jesse James, the Northfield Raid, and the Wild West’s Greatest Escape at the Northfield Historical Society on Sept. 5 at 6:30 pm. Recently featured on NPR’s All Things Considered, Gardner makes fresh a story we thought we knew well. The event is free and open to the public; for more information go tonorthfieldhistory.org.

Full Belly Begins

Nothing is more essential to life, and yet a full belly is proving to be beyond the means of an increasing number of people, local and beyond. Full Belly, Inc. hopes to reverse that trend; an independent, family owned corporation that’s working on its 501(3c) status, Full Belly is opening a weekly soup kitchen in September, bringing nutritious, well-balanced meals to anyone who needs them. Meals are served at the Cathedral Guild House in Faribault on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 4 to 6 pm. Full Belly hopes to purchase land for a free community garden. For information, donations and volunteer inquiries, contact Donna Strohkirch at 507/331-3235, fullbellyinc@gmail.com or go to fullbellyinc.com.

VAUDEVESQUE

If there’s anything more fun than a vaudeville fundraiser, it’s one with a trippy name. And when it’s offered up by the Northfield Arts Guild as part of this year’s DJJD events, you know a rollicking good time awaits. Featuring 15 all-star acts that boast spectacular skill, silliness and strength (OK, now I’m really intrigued), Vaudevesque promises a little bit of naughty and a whole lot of nice. The show runs Sept. 5-7 at 7 pm, with an additional show Saturday the 7th at 4 pm. For tickets and information call the Northfield Arts Guild at 507/645-8877 or go to northfieldartsguild.org.

The Shadows at the Crossing

On Feb. 3 1959, the Shadows (with lead singer Bobby Vee) made history when they replaced plane-crash victim Buddy Holly onstage. What followed was a decade of hits that included Take Good Care of My Baby and Rubber Ball; lucky for us, they’re onstage again at the State Theater in Zumbrota on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 7:30. Original band member Dick Dunkirk leads the mid-America Music Hall of Famers through the best of the doo-wop era; expect violins and a full rhythm section to give great old songs new life. For tickets and information call 507/732-7616 or go to crossingsatcarnegie.com.

The Education of Peace

For 11 years local community members and peacemakers have come together on the International Day of Peace to remind us, with words and music, how very vital peace is to the basic survival of our planet. This year join organizers Judith Stoutland, Marie Vogl Gery, Bill McGrath, Matthew Rohn and Norm Watt as they gather with peacemakers of all stripes Sept. 21, 2-4 pm, on Bridge Square in Northfield. There will be an open mic and volunteers from many organizations will help explain how we can all be part of the solution to this problem that is tearing our world apart. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming and the message, empowering.

Dozinky Days

Dožínky, a festival to give thanks for the harvest, is a cherished tradition in the Czech Republic and is celebrating its 29th year in New Prague. Held on the city’s Main Street on Sept. 21 from 10 to 5, you can experience a mini-trip to this beautiful European country; prowl through an open-air market, enjoy the beer garden (featuring authentic Czech beer, of course!), taste a number of traditional dishes, and discover the music and dance from a land that so many of our ancestors called home. For more information go to newprague.com/dozinky. Admission to the festival, as well as to most of the activities, is free.

Feasting on Art in Lakeville

The Lakeville Art Festival is back. Hard work coupled with boundless talent have made this small but premium art festival an annual feast for the senses; happening this year on Sept 21 and 22, it promises to be better than ever. Held on the grounds of the arts center in historic downtown Lakeville, the festival features 60-some excellent visual artists – many with local connections – as well as performing and literary artists, a youth tent and community projects. Food and drink will keep art lovers refreshed, and the creative sounds and sights will keep all inspired. For more information go to lakevilleartfestival.org, or call 952/985-4640. If there’s a more refreshing way to spend a sunny September weekend, we can’t think of it.

HISTORIC

HAPPENINGS By Susan Hvistendahl

“Robbery & Murder!” in Northfield, Sept. 7, 1876 “Robbery & Murder!” screamed the headline of the Rice County Journal of Sept. 7, 1876. “Desperate Attempt to Rob the Bank! J.L. Heywood Shot Dead at His Post – Would not open the Safe.” The time of this “extra” edition was given as 4 p.m., a scant two hours after the James-Younger Gang’s brazen attack on the First National Bank which propelled Northfield, Minnesota, into national and international fame as the Waterloo of the outlaws.

This “reception” was so hot that the raiders “turned and fled south, dashing through Dundas towards Millersburg with some of our good men in pursuit.” The story continued in the Extra datelined Sept. 8: “Our usually quiet little city was uncommonly wakeful through the night of Thursday, the 7th, after the tragic events of the preceding afternoon. Let us put the horse in his own peaceful heaven. He looked like a thorough bred.”

“Robbery and Murder”

On Sept. 14, a full account of what was called “The Northfield Tragedy of Sept. 7” appeared in the Rice County Journal with a drawing based on Sumner’s death photos of two robbers, though they were misidentified. What follows in this Historic Happenings column is based on Wheaton’s articles and first-hand remembrances of the participants from the Northfield News of July 10, 1897, and from Carleton professor George Huntington’s book Robber and Hero, first published in 1895.

At about 2 p.m., three of the outlaws went into the bank. Hardware store owner J.S. Allen, whose suspicions had been aroused, attempted to follow and Clell Miller, on guard at the door, grabbed Allen by the collar, drew his revolver and told Allen not to holler or “I’ll blow your damned head off.” Allen jerked himself free and ran toward the corner crying, “Get your guns, boys, they’re robbing the bank!”

by “reckless shooting of the desperadoes,” whose symptoms were “quite serious if not dangerous.” Indeed, Gustavson became the fourth casualty of the raid. Wheaton wrote that “in their hurry, as it was getting hot for them outside,” the robbers had fled the bank leaving a grain sack of nickels and scrip and a linen duster behind. He commented parenthetically, “Probably the Bank would send these by Express, if they can get their address.”

Inside the bank, clerk Frank Wilcox said he was “more than startled” by three men with pistols in their hands (later identified as Bob Younger, Charlie Pitts and Frank James), one of whom shouted, “Throw up your hands! We are going to rob the bank.” They claimed they had 40 men outside so resistance was useless. Wilcox said, “It was very evident that they had been drinking as the

smell of liquor was very strong.” On the day of the raid, Wheaton wrote, four of the robbers had wine or whiskey at local establishments.

Bunker made a break for the door, pursued by Pitts, who fired two shots at him. The second shot struck Bunker in the shoulder as he fled to safety. Increasingly frustrated, the robbers grabbed only a handful of cash and coins, missing the cashier’s drawer which had $3,000 in it.

The outlaws asked for the cashier and demanded the safe inside the vault be opened. Heywood, a bookkeeper substituting as cashier that day, told them, “There is a time lock and it can’t be opened now.” (In reality, the combination dial was not turned.) Pitts stepped into the vault and Wilcox said that Heywood, “probably with the thought of protecting the contents sprang to the vault door and partly closed it but was at once seized and dragged away.”

Wheaton wrote that meanwhile, outside the bank, the firing on the street by the horsemen (Jesse James, Bill Chadwell, Clell Miller and Cole and Jim Younger) was meant to “scare our people so that they would get out of the way and let them accomplish their hellish deed.” But rather than just running for cover, many of the citizens ran to arm themselves. “Murder!” Heywood shouted. One of the Henry Wheeler, a University of Michiintruders struck him to the floor with a gan medical student home on vacation, heavy blow from the butt of a pistol. At Pictures of the dead outlaws Clell Miller (left) and had been sitting in front of his father’s that point, Pitts pulled out a knife, drew Bill Chadwell sold well after the botched bank drugstore across the street from the Heywood’s head back and said, “Let’s raid in Northfield. bank. He fired a shot which struck Clell Miller in the “region treatment, Heywood “would rather sacrifice his life than betray his of the heart,” wrote Wheaton, “making him bite the dust” as he fell trust,” in the words of Wilcox. from his horse.

Special Wheeler Exhibit and Book Signing Event at NHS On Thursday, Sept. 5, during Defeat of Jesse James Days, the Northfield Historical Society will host a book signing and presentation by Mark Lee Gardner, “New Insights on the Northfield Raid,” based on his newly published book Shot All to Hell (HarperCollins). The event will take place at NHS at 408 Division St. from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Until Sept. 30, the Northfield Historical Society is displaying in its museum the .50 caliber Smith carbine used by Henry Wheeler to thwart the robbery of the First National Bank in 1876. Also on display are a Smith and Wesson .38 caliber revolver that Wheeler carried for protection after the raid (for fear of retribution from the family of Clell Miller, the bank robber he shot) and a gold pocket watch given to Wheeler by the First National Bank in appreciation of his deeds. These items are on loan from the collection of Gerry Groenewold and Connie Triplett of Grand Forks, North Dakota, who acquired them from Dr. Wheeler’s son there. (Dr. Wheeler became a prominent surgeon in Grand Forks, Dakota Territory, starting in 1881, and was mayor of Grand Forks from 1918 to 1920. He

died in Grand Forks on April 13, 1930, at the age of 76.) Hayes Scriven, Northfield Historical Society Executive Director, says, “This collection of artifacts is one of the best I have ever been around. We do not have many artifacts from the citizens of Northfield that helped protect the bank and the Smith carbine used by Wheeler really helps tell the story of how Northfield was able to stop the gang.”

Northfield Historical Society Executive Director Hayes Scriven places a .50 caliber Smith carbine in a display case for an NHS exhibit. The old army carbine was used by Henry Wheeler to kill Clell Miller and wound Bob Younger after the First National Bank robbery attempt and is on loan from the collection of Gerry Groenewold and Connie Triplett until Sept. 30. Note the recently discovered photo of Wheeler in the case. Photo courtesy of the Northfield Historical Society.

Three times Cole Younger exhorted the robbers to leave the bank, crying, “For God’s sake, come out; they are shooting us all to pieces!” Pitts and Bob Younger exited first. Frank James hesitated for an instant and then he turned “like a flash, and with the expression of a very devil in his face put his pistol almost at Heywood’s head and fired the fatal shot,” recalled Wilcox. Wheaton wrote, “They shot him and ran like base cowards.” Wheeler then aided A.R. Manning in a fight with Bob Younger who was exchanging fire with Manning while dodging back and forth under the Scriver Building staircase. (Bob was on foot since Manning had killed his horse. Manning later said that he supposed the robbers came to “sack the town” before they left and were using their horses as “breastworks,” or barriers to shoot from behind.) Manning, who was equipped with a 45/70 Rolling Block Remington taken from the window of his hardware store, said, “While we were thus playing hide and seek Wheeler struck him [Bob Younger] in the elbow.” Manning had shot Bill Chadwell dead from off his horse and also wounded Cole Younger in the hip. Storekeeper H.B. Gress later said Manning seemed to be the leader in the gunfight and “displayed more real nerve than all the robbers put together.” Gress added that all the shootings “produced such a concussion that frame buildings shook like trees would on a windy day.” “For God’s sake, don’t leave me, boys, I’m shot,” Bob Younger called out. Cole pulled his brother Bob up behind him on his horse and the remaining gang members then galloped out of town, leaving more than $15,000 in the bank and two of their accomplices dead.

NHS will contribute artifacts from its own collection as well: a photo of Wheeler taken about the time of his graduation from Carleton in 1875 and a glass plate negative of deceased outlaws Clell Miller and Bill Chadwell, taken by Northfield photographer Ira Sumner, the first photo taken of the bodies. Twelve glass plate negatives were presented to NHS on May 30, 2007, by Northfield native Benjamin Nystuen when he was here from Colorado to attend his 50th class reunion at St. Olaf. Nystuen’s father, Elmer Nystuen, had gotten the negatives from Ira Sumner’s son, Stuart, and Benjamin Nystuen said he wished to return the negatives to Northfield “where they belong.”

The Rice County Journal of Sept. 14, 1876, reported, “The Governor has issued a new proclamation offering $1,000 each for the bandits, dead or alive, and the Bank at Northfield offers $500 for each. If these offers do not increase the excitement, they do not diminish it.” After the largest manhunt in the U.S., four of the outlaws – the three Younger brothers and Charlie Pitts – were cornered on Sept. 21 in Hanska Slough near Madelia and in the resulting battle Pitts was killed. Frank and Jesse James had split from the others and made their way back to Missouri but the James-Younger Gang’s long reign of robberies had ended on Division Street in Northfield. Northfield held the first reenactment of the bank raid on Sept. 11, 1948, as part of a fall festival. The Defeat of Jesse James Days are now held on the weekend after Labor Day, attracting up to 250,000 visitors over the five-day period. It is the largest all-volunteer event in Minnesota. Rather than glorifying the bank raiders, the event seeks to emphasize the heroism of a town which rose up against the outlaws. On Sept. 7, 1876, indignant Northfield residents even threw rocks at the James-Younger Gang members as they fled in ignominious disarray. The Northfield Historical Society offers tours of the restored site of the First National Bank raid at 408 Division St. For further information, see northfieldhistory.org. Thanks to current James-Younger Gang leader Chip DeMann for assistance with this column. This story was originally published in the Northfield Entertainment Guide of September 2011.
