Glimpses of Eternity: Icons in the Orthodox World – Jan. 5-Mar. 12 – A fascinating group of icons and other religious objects drawn from Russian, Greek, Ethiopian and Coptic Orthodox traditions. A rich history of thematic developments and cultural variations is told through this exhibit curated by Professor William North specifically for Carleton’s Perlman Teaching Museum. Exhibited work comes from the private icon collection of Emmanuel and Argie Tiliakos (Winchester, MA) and Carleton’s Special Collections, offering visitors a unique opportunity to learn about Orthodox visual culture and devotion through objects seldom on view. An icon (from the Greek term for “image”) is a work of religious art — most commonly a painting of a holy figure or figures. Particularly associated with Orthodox Christian traditions, icons are regarded principally as religious rather than art objects and hold a special place in private and public devotions in the Orthodox worlds. Because their function was much more important than the individual identities of the artists who made them, their creators are seldom known. Icons have exalted status because they aid faithful individuals in communing with the divine and gaining, if only for a moment, a glimpse of eternity. Opening Reception: Jan. 10, 6-7:30pm

Red Noses is a black comedy about the black death, a vibrant and slapstick hymn to the power of laughter and the human spirit. There’s no cure for the plague, and Auxerre in France, 1348, is populated by the dying. Marcel Flote, who is afflicted by convulsions, tries to join a band of self-flagellating pilgrims and ends up in a comedic routine. He has an epiphany: he must serve God by spreading laughter. Joined by Sonnerie, who communicates by shaking limbs covered in tiny bells, he forms a pious brotherhood of joy, the Red Noses of Auxerre, to give cheer to a pestilent and doomed world. Defending the Caveman

The problem? Not even he can see it. The King’s New Clothes is a funny and fast-paced parable about pride, delusion and human nature. Directed by Rachel Haider. It’s open, and Armory Square, in downtown Northfield, celebrates with Minnesota-based Red House artists The Pines. Rolling Stone calls the indie folk group “quietly gripping,” and Acoustic Guitar describes their music as “simply and eloquently stated sonic poetry – the real deal.” Presented by the Northfield Arts Guild as part of their 411 series, this evening of music includes the band’s new album Above the Prairie, and showcases David Huckfelt, Benson Ramsey and Alex Ramsey’s most accomplished work to date. In 2004 Dan “Daddy Squeeze” Newton organized an accordion festival at Crossings at Carnegie in Zumbrota, meant to showcase different musicians and styles; the inspiration was old-time Polish and German. The Story of Crow Boy explores the brutal, often harrowing childhood story of Taro Yashima, who survived the ravages of WWII and racial discrimination to find his voice – and joy – through poetic visual forms and works of social conscience. Based on his 1956 Caldecott Honor book, Crow Boy, and other autobiographical work, and placed in the hands of Minneapolis’ In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theater, it becomes a theatrically stunning tribute to Yashima and to the human spirit itself. Martin Luther King’s legacy of unity and equality is more relevant than ever, and the Arcadia Charter School invites everyone to reflect on the words and work of the man who believed in the human spirit with the 14th annual Arts for Martin, Jan. 12, 7pm, at the Arcadia Charter School of Northfield. The Contented Cow, Northfield A five-member blues/rock band out of Minneapolis formed in 2001 by Joni Weston and Eric Buffalohead, Bluedog has released several albums and singles which have been nominated for Best Blues Recording for the Native American Music Awards and the Indian Summer Music Awards. Their music is influenced by life experiences of Native people. Weston states that “Native people have experienced the blues, too. For us, it reflects a significant part of life for Native people and our relationship with the U.S. government in the past, present and future. All the pain we’ve endured from massacres, boarding schools and forced removal from our homes, etc… all attempts to erase our culture and our people. We are still here. Our music celebrates life, the good and bad.” The band has performed across the U.S. in support of its original recordings and has fronted notable blues acts including: The Robert Cray Band, Indigenous, Los Lonely Boys, John Mayall, Lil Ed and the Blues Imperials, Ana Popovic, Shannon Curfman and the Jerry Garcia Band.

At a young age Jack discovered his vaudevillian great-grandfather’s phonograph record collection and spent his childhood listening to cats like Bing Crosby, Al Jolson and Rudy Vallee. As fate would have it, oddball ukulele legend Tiny Tim moved in next door and became Jack’s babysitter. That rich musical stew forms the blend of Jack and Kitty’s Emmy Award-winning artistic approach. It’s organic and acoustic with nothing but positive vibes. He is an engaging, dynamic and and unpredictable live performer who will keep your ears on their toes. His background studies in Afro-Cuban rhythms and jazz harmony meld into a distinct style that can only be described as “Bunnyteeth.” He has studied under jazz sax master John Paulson and Arizonian guitar maestro Rick Cyge. Kracum Performance Hall, Carleton, Northfield Co-written in 2010 by Victor Zupanc and Kevin Kling, For the Birds is a concert length work that, on the surface, seems to be about birds. It features a series of musical pieces, performed by music chamber ensemble Zeitgeist, extolling the nature of each particular bird (sparrows, roosters, woodpeckers, Canadian geese, hawks), drawing parallels with our own human nature. Interspersed between is insightful storytelling created by Kling reflecting on childhood memories, immigration, illness, accidents and healing. However, just below the surface (but discernible to those that look), For the Birds is a work about that part of our human nature that compels us to reach beyond ourselves for more – more opportunity for our family, more money, more fun, more speed, more knowledge, more love. When all goes well, we call that need aspiration. When it doesn’t, and we plunge to the earth with melting wings, we call it hubris.
