With plenty of crazy antics, loads of fresh laughs and spanking new original songs, You Smell Barn celebrates rural life in the 1950s – a musical treat for all. The Danger Committee

By Felicia Crosby

Mother Banjo CD Release

Mother Banjo (aka Ellen Stanley) calls her music “pub gospel.” The Star Tribune describes it as “traditional folk and bluegrass…with genuinely poetic lyrics” and puts her in the company of Lucy Kaplansky and Gillian Welch. Her fans include John Gorka and Josh Ritter, and her live performances – always engaging, often humorous – weave personal stories with lively covers and her own powerful material. And she’ll be at the Tavern Lounge in Northfield at 8pm on Jan. 5, with a CD release. For more information, go to motherbanjo.com and tavernofnorthfield.com.

It’s hard to imagine a better way to spend a winter’s Sunday afternoon than in the presence of fine opera. Minnesota Opera resident artists soprano Danielle Beckvermit, baritone Nicholas Davis, bass Wm. Clay Thompson and pianist Mary Box gather at the Lakeville Area Arts Center on Jan. 13 at 2pm to make winter hearts soar, leaving audiences nourished and ready to take on January’s chill. Catch a constellation of rising stars as they fill the Arts Center with voices of operatic beauty and power. For tickets and information, call 952/985-4640 or go to lakevilleareaartscenter.com.

Using knives, spears and flaming torches, the Twin Cities-based Danger Committee is a juggling act that lives up to its name. This trio of performers – a headliner at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival – has been featured on NBC’s America’s Got Talent, where Howie Mandel described them as “truly something unique.” Now appearing at the Paradise Center for the Arts in Faribault on Jan. 25, this heart-stopping, jaw-dropping, wildly-exciting show promises to be a family favorite. Performance begins at 7:30pm. For tickets and information call 507/332-7372, or go to paradisecenterforthearts.org.

The Music of John Denver

If you love John Denver (and really, be honest – who doesn’t?) then “A Tribute to John Denver” with Layne Yost at Crossings at Carnegie in Zumbrota will satisfy those long-buried country boy (or girl) yearnings. Appearing for one night on Jan. 12 at 7:30pm, Yost, with John Shimoda on bass and Carol McDowall on fiddle, brings to fresh life many of Denver’s classic songs, weaving them with stories that give insight into the late artist’s music and legacy. Soulful and true, Yost creates an intimate experience for fans of all ages. For tickets and information, call 507/732-7616 or go to crossingsatcarnegie.com.

Arts for Martin

For 15 years, the Arcadia Charter School in Northfield has hosted an evening of visual and performing arts in celebration of the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King. With thoughtful, powerful meditations and presentations of peace, compassion and the gift of oneself – all lessons lived by Dr. King – this annual event has become a cherished local institution. For this year’s performance on Jan. 18, join guest presenter Paul Briggs, an Assistant Professor of Art and Art History at St. Olaf College, as he speaks about Dr. King’s life of sharing. Joining him are the St. Olaf Gospel Choir, Dance Professor Arneshia Williams, the Prairie Creek Orchestra, the Arts for Martin Band led by Craig Wasner, the Arts for Martin Community Choir, the Arcadia Dancers, and the wonderful Laura Baker Choir. The visual artwork of Alden Cristofaro-Hark enhances the space. The celebration begins at 7pm. For more information, call 507/663-8806, ext. 212.

Shift out of Robot Mode Kate Buckmeier

and Engage with Life

Some days can feel like a blur. Work, emails, appointments, kid activities, meal prep, exercise – the list goes on and the clock ticks as we continue to push through one item after another. These are the days when we can easily slip into “robot mode.” When robot mode gets turned on the day revolves around production, and we can become very efficient and very determined, but robot mode feels very stiff. It can make us unable to flex with life’s curveballs. The clock and the to-do list are constantly on our mind, and when something unplanned gets introduced, we can get resentful and cranky. It may be efficient, productive and keep the machine of family and work running, but robot mode doesn’t allow for joy, creativity and the wholehearted love that we need and crave. In order to live a fulfilling life we need to take our time on things and be open to embrace moments of spontaneity. Don’t you long to enjoy beauty and feel the wonder and awe in everything that surrounds you, to be engaged and ready to connect with the people in front of you? Here are a few simple strategies that can keep you from getting stuck in robot mode or pull you out when you are head down and your to-do list is running on overdrive.

Get clear, let go, & move forward with renewed energy & a space designed to fit your lifestyle! katebuckmeier.com | kate@katebuckmeier.com | 507.475.0402 www.facebook.com/katedeclutterandredesign

CREATE A DAILY “ENOUGH” LIST

Each day, write down the three things that you really want to accomplish for the day. These are the items that feel the most essential to complete given all of the moving pieces of the day. Keeping a smaller daily list of tasks allows for a sense of completion and the freedom to invite spontaneity. If you catch yourself trying to add more items to your daily list, stop, turn the page and instead write them on a separate list that captures ideas for the whole week. This practice eases the urgency. You haven’t forgotten about these ideas/projects, but can give yourself a break about getting to them right now.

SHIFT THE FOCUS

When your head is spinning and you can’t stop watching the clock, use a simple trick that I learned years ago on a yoga retreat – shift your focus to something far off, like the sunset or the top of a tree and allow your gaze to blur – zoom out. After a few minutes, turn your eyes toward something close by and focus on one tiny aspect of that thing – zoom in. This shift from grand to tiny is a simple practice that will bring you back to the present and keep the big picture in focus.

TAKE A DAILY DOSE OF NATURE

Each day make time for a few moments outside. You might

BE MOVED BY MUSIC

You may find that you switch right out of robot mode when you turn on some good music. Engage with the words and melody and feel a lightness in your body when songs that you love are playing. I love to listen and sing along while I cook and find that music makes me feel flexible and light – no robot allowed unless I choose it as a dance move!

END THE DAY IN GRATITUDE

spend it walking your dog, eating lunch in the sunshine, or stepping out to watch the trees in the breeze. The amount of time can vary, but this time in nature offers the expansion that will keep your focus from becoming narrow and rigid.

MAKE EYE CONTACT

If you notice that you have stopped making eye contact with the people around you, then you know that you are in robot mode. Stop and look into the eyes of the person right in front of you, and there will be an immediate shift that awakens you. You will become open to whatever emotion is present in front of you.

Keep a small dated journal by your bed and each night write three to five simple things that bring a sense of gratitude, contentment, or joy. This simple ritual doesn’t take long and can become a peaceful way to re-center and take stock at the end of the day. On the days when robot mode is in full gear, it can require a little searching to find gratitude. Those are the days to remind yourself of immediate things like your warm bed or the ability to breathe in and out. This practice is simple, consistent and will become a habit that allows you to tune in to your heart each day. It is easy to get stuck going through the motions, but life is so much more enjoyable when you are engaged, flexible, open and present to the people and things around you. You weren’t meant to be a robot. Kate Buckmeier of Kate: Declutter & Redesign can be found at katebuckmeier.com, 507/475-0402 or on Facebook.

Art Vandalay · 8-11pm

Renowned “kick-ass Americana band” (Hindsight Harmonies), this Twin Cities ensemble makes its way back to Northfield in support of its latest release, Heaven’s Operahouse. A Northfield favorite, the band is also recording their Tavern Lounge performances for a live album to be released in 2019, Get Vandalized, recorded entirely at the Tavern. The group’s popular laid-back roots rock draws on influences ranging from Neil Young, Gram Parsons and John Prine to The Eels and Tom Petty – lending its own unique brand of roots music that melds smart lyricism with pop-infused melodies. Simply Fodder For Your Next Cocktail Party By Sherri Faye ©2018

Catcher In The Rye... I read that book back in the ’70s, and the tale of teenage woe and angst resonated with me at the time. The desire to fit in yet be unique, combined with teen hormones, was equal parts frustrating and exciting. Fast forward several decades, as I approach postmenopausal 60, I am reviewing midlife as I experienced it – similar feelings of angst and woe were revisited in my 40s and 50s, with a twist. Twice divorced, thrice engaged, and a few romantic entanglements tossed in the mix later, I now find myself happily single. I adjusted to the empty nest long ago (my youngest is 30). Now as a retired (from the job scene) woman, I am content to care for my disabled grandchild, write, draw, create, and simply be. Frequently my “Left Field” comic characters and stories reflect my life, past or present. In this “Catcher In The Wry” episode Constance, who has been without Conrad for a while (more on that coming soon), is seen freaking out a tad while perusing online dating. Who wouldn’t? I tried that baloney a few times. I know, I know, people have met their “soulmate” on matchmadeindreamland.com, stupid.org, or myprofileisapackoflies.dragnet – but that was not the case for me. I was honest in my profile! I stated truths like “I have ‘lived’ a colorful life, and have the scars, tattoos, and stretch marks to show for it. Hey, it’s not like they’re on my face!” And my requirements and expectations were pretty basic. Things like “Must have nice smile, preferably with mostly your own teeth.” And “Should be reasonably fit and healthy. No beer belly the size of the moon.” “Must have already had a good Mom. I’m not applying for the job.” Or, is this too much to ask? “Must have own car. And be licensed to drive it.” I added a “Disclaimer: No Moms-Basement-Dwellers, Heroin Addicts, Serial Killers, Peeping Toms, Flashers, Rapists, On-Your-Last-Leg, Unemployed Ne’er-Do-Wells, etc...” And here is what I got (some on dates, some in messages). Guy: “I’m 6 foot 2.” Me: “Really? Is that with your humpback unfurled?” Guy: “I quit smoking.” Me: “When? (Noting his jaundiced digits.) This morning?” Guy: “I’m a good dad. I love my daughter. I need money.” Me: “Seriously? I must be on the wrong site? Is this sugar-mamas-r-us?” <delete> <changes bank passwords> Guy: “You will have to be okay with living in my trailer in the country. It’s bought and paid for.” Me: “Umm. Sounds tempting, but I haven’t even met you yet.” <delete> Guy: “I have Hep-C.” Me. “Goodbye.” Guy: “I smoke, have diabetes, and an amputated leg, take it or leave it.” Me: “Tough call, but I’ll have to go with the second option.” Oh, it gets worse, but I will leave it there. I can’t and didn’t make this shite up. Anyhow, I dropped the online dating scene faster than you can grow a chia pet on crack in a time-lapse universe. Whew! I dodged some bullets, and cannon balls. I do date, people I meet or know. But it’s on my terms. I’ve come to realize that I actually love being on my own. I don’t want to give up a side of the bed. Either of them. Or give up control of the remote control. Or wash their underwear, do their dishes, run their errands, raise their kids, support their career. Nor will I move my boundaries to accommodate their desires, or sell my soul because they turned out to be the devil-you-know after all. Nope. Not no way. Not no how. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a man hater. I love men. Well, some of them anyway. But after darn near 37 years of my life being in relationship(s), the downs are not worth the ups in a long term ‘imprisonment’ at this stage of the game. By downs, I mean cheating, lying, manipulative, scandalous, down right dastardly deeds. You get the picture. They cast a very long shadow over the moments of joy, or even seeming contentment. Now, after 12 years of being single, I have glided into the land of contentment. An old friend once told me to appreciate that “I am darn good company.” I do and I am. I am richly blessed and content. In this new year, my wish for you, dear readers, is that you successfully dodge bullets, cannon balls (not to be confused with Cannon Falls) and winters of discontent. “I am content; that is a blessing greater than riches; and he to whom that is given need ask no more.” ~Henry Fielding
