Glimpses of Eternity: Icons in the Orthodox World – through Mar. 12 – A fascinating group of icons and other religious objects drawn from Russian, Greek, Ethiopian and Coptic Orthodox traditions. A rich history of thematic developments and cultural variations is told through this exhibit curated by Professor William North specifically for Carleton’s Perlman Teaching Museum. Exhibited work comes from the private icon collection of Emmanuel and Argie Tiliakos (Winchester, MA) and Carleton’s Special Collections, offering visitors a unique opportunity to learn about Orthodox visual culture and devotion through objects seldom on view. An icon (from the Greek term for “image”) is a work of religious art — most commonly a painting of a holy figure or figures. Particularly associated with Orthodox Christian traditions, icons are regarded principally as religious rather than art objects and hold a special place in private and public devotions in the Orthodox worlds. Because their function was much more important than the individual identities of the artists who made them, their creators are seldom known. Icons have exalted status because they aid faithful individuals in communing with the divine and gaining, if only for a moment, a glimpse of eternity.

Contemporary American Painting [1945] – through Mar. 12 – In 1945 the Encyclopedia Britannica staged a sweeping examination of contemporary American painting from its art collection. An exemplary work by each of more than 100 well-respected artists toured the U.S., providing cultural access and aesthetic experiences to large numbers of everyday Americans. This exhibit seeks to recapture the essence of the monumental tour through paintings, drawings and prints chosen from the collections of Carleton College and Gustavus Adolphus College.

The Northfield Public Library is hosting several author conversations in February, each featuring a Minnesota-connected writer. Award-winning writer Peter Geye kicks off the month as part of SELCO’s Winter Tour of Minnesota Book Award Authors. Winner of the Minnesota book award in 2017 for his novel Wintering, he joins local bibliophiles on Monday, Feb. 5, at 7pm. On Thursday, Feb. 8, also at 7pm, children’s writer/illustrator Sharon Henry discusses her book Good Day, Sad Day, Same Day, about parental bi-polar disorder from the child’s point of view. And on Monday, Feb. 12, author and CEO of the Main Street Project, Regi Haslett-Marroquin will speak about his book In the Shadow of a Green Man, describing his journey from war-torn Guatemala to his work in regenerative, sustainable farming. Masopust – the Czech Mardi Gras

The LAB Theater series is a new and excellent addition to the Northfield Arts Guild’s theater season, and its latest offering, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, promises a fresh and edgy take on the iconic show. Starring Brendon Etter and Shari Setchell, with a rocking band that features Ray Coudret, Maddie Thies and Ryan Van Gundy under musical direction by John Madden, Hedwig’s story is caustic, exotic and erotic. The Mississippi River Gorge is home to a wealth of ancient trees that have witnessed waves of settlers and immigrant river crossings through the years. Barefoot in the Park at the Paradise

Barefoot in the Park is one of legendary playwright Neil Simon’s first comedies, and one of his most beloved. Following the early days of Corie and Paul Bratter’s married life in the top floor of a New York City brownstone, it’s filled with warmth and in the hands of the always excellent Merlin Players, loads of comedy zest. The Contented Cow, Northfield It was the winter of 1959, at the height of that new music called rock and roll. A Winter Dance Party was touring the upper Midwest passing through southern Minnesota several times. It featured Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Dion and the Belmonts, and the Big Bopper. In the first days of February, just after playing the Surf Ballroom, 100 miles south of Northfield in Clear Lake, Iowa, Holly, Valens and the Bopper all died in a plane crash. The Winter Dance Party in Northfield annually celebrates the sound and style of the legendary music makers of this era as interpreted by local musicians. Make sure to check it out and bring your dancing shoes and some black horn-rimmed glasses. Scheduled to perform this year are: Mark Allen, Forrest and the Rangers, and the Ballroom Surfers.

Urness Recital Hall, St. Olaf, Northfield Dr. Toni Marie Marchioni, oboe, has appeared with the National Symphony, American Ballet Theater, Grant Park Orchestra, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, New Jersey Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Peoria Symphony, Georgia Woodwind Quintet and the internationally acclaimed new music ensemble Continuum. She is a frequent performer at the International Double Reed Society conferences. Dr. Marchioni has collaborated with members of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, New York Philharmonic and Paris Conservatoire. She has participated in the Aspen and Castleton festivals, among others, and has worked with conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Christoph Eschenbach, Lorin Maazel, David Robertson, James DePreist and Michael Tilson Thomas. As a passionate interpreter of contemporary music, she works directly with composers whenever possible, including Samuel Adler, Virko Baley, Anthony Cheung, Carson Cooman, Ryan Gallagher, Jeremy Gill, Lansing McLoskey, Huang Ruo and Derrick Wang.

Tamale Traditions by Maria P. Estrada, owner, Maria’s Tacohut & Concessions and Maria’s Catering When my family immigrated into this country in 1986, we brought our traditions with us. I learned to love and cook Mexican food before it was “cool and trendy.” Homemade tortillas, salsas and tamale making is basic everyday cooking in my home. When we moved from Texas to Minnesota, I learned that baking cookies during Christmas season was a tradition in most households. Not in our home! Tamale-making is our Christmas tradition. We couldn’t find any of the ingredients for the tamales in the Faribault/Northfield area back then, so we would drive to St. Paul to visit a Mexican market where we found all the ingredients we

needed. Nowadays you can find all the ingredients for Mexican cooking all over in Southern Minnesota. Traditionally the tamale making starts on Dec. 22. We cook the meat, usually pork, seed the peppers and clean the corn husks. On the 23rd we prepare the dough and sauce, season the pork, soak the corn husks and start the process of spreading the corn dough on the husks, adding the pork filling, wrapping them tight. Finally we steam them in a special pot called Tamalera. The process ends about 10 hours later. On Christmas Eve, we go to church, come home and enjoy the fruit of our labor! Tamales, beans, salsas,

When people – friends or strangers – come together, food and beverage are almost always present, and usually as an incentive. It’s a simple truth: if you want to bring people together, offer to feed them.

That’s why we refer to Imminent Brewing as “Northfield’s Living Room.” Our space is here for friends, family, neighbors, strangers, kids, and, yes, even dogs, to come together. You can sit at the bar and chat with whoever is sitting next to you (or the person who just poured you that beer). You can sit around one of our larger tables, or our coffee table, or out on our spacious patio.

As we have evolved, we have learned that good beer, enjoyed responsibly, has been among the strongest of attractions. Some of the mightiest cities in Europe were built around local breweries. Pubs and taverns have often been the chosen gathering places for town hall meetings and civic celebrations.

A brew pub is a place we can come together, imbibe a pint or two of great beer and enjoy fellowship in our wonderful community.

Instead, today’s dinner parties will continue with sweeter wines as often as they do with coffee. In an age where coffee is enjoying a popularity verging on religion, perhaps it’s time to revitalize coffee’s post-meal standing by bringing back one of coffee’s long-lost companions – cognac.

Coffee and cognac can be as simple as the name suggests; pour a healthy dose of cognac into your cup of coffee; however, there is a healthy debate across northern Germany and France about what is the best way to savor this pairing. Some say that it is best to serve the cognac in a separate glass, If you love your coffee, or if you’re looking for a allowing the guests to sip either coffee or cognac, one then the other. Kickstarter Cakes by Kelsy Wittmeier, owner, Bluebird Cakery Bluebird Cakery humbly started as a small farmer’s market stand in the summer of 2014. We had a very warm welcome to the Faribault community so one year later we launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to open a store. Thanks to an awesome outpouring of support we raised more than $29,000 to aid us in opening our own store front and kitchen in downtown Faribault. Today, Bluebird Cakery is a gourmet cake shop that specializes in baked from scratch cupcakes, rolls, scones, cookies, wedding cakes and cheesecakes made daily. These treats are served alongside fresh gourmet local coffee and tea.

Tavern Lounge, Northfield O’Green is Sheri O’Meara and Tom Greenwald, a husband/wife team performing a blend of folk and Americana from old masters and new – incorporating blues, Celtic, originals and more. O’Meara’s vocals have been heard in the Celtic band Locklin Road for more than a decade throughout Minnesota and on five CDs. She has given songwriter showcase concerts in Ireland and plays guitar and bodhran. Greenwald is the latest addition to Locklin Road and his guitar playing has led a variety of bands for more than 30 years from Chicago to Florida to Minnesota. He plays guitar, piano, violin, mandolin and any other stringed instrument that catches his fancy.

Owatonna Arts Center Erika Blanco, Sam Rudy, Benjamin Davis and Eric Graf are a Twin Cities-based ensemble, bringing a dynamic edge to performance and education since 2013. As recitalists, Lux maintains an active presence in a wide array of musical spheres – from concert halls and churches to coffee shops and podcasts. Their concert series, “Lattes with Lux,” established an enthusiastic fan base and is currently hosted by several local, independent coffee houses around the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. In addition to presenting classical repertoire, Lux String Quartet frequently collaborates with other musicians, actors and composers to perform contemporary works, pushing the boundaries of presentation. The program will include folk music, works by Haydn, Beethoven and works by contemporary composers. Dedicated to music education and instilling a love for their art in the next generation, Lux String Quartet presents at elementary schools and early music education programs. They have been in residency at Augsburg College Suzuki Talent Education Program and currently constitute the teaching faculty of Oskaloosa Music Festival’s String Camp. No tickets required. Imminent Brewing, Northfield TLA is the combination of three top-tier Twin Cities jazz players who happen to have deep connections to Northfield. Bassist Kevin Clements taught jazz bass at Carleton College for years when he wasn’t flying as a commercial pilot or gigging with folks like Rosemary Clooney, Robert Goulet or any number of Twin Cities jazz greats. Likewise, drummer Eric Hanson has been a mainstay in the Twin Cities jazz scene for decades. Dave Hagedorn is among the most in-demand vibraphone players in the country, having played with some of the most prestigious musicians and organizations in music from Brian Setzer and Phil Hey to the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and The Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
