Glimpses of Eternity: Icons in the Orthodox World – through Mar. 12 – A fascinating group of icons and other religious objects drawn from Russian, Greek, Ethiopian and Coptic Orthodox traditions. A rich history of thematic developments and cultural variations is told through this exhibit curated by Professor William North specifically for Carleton’s Perlman Teaching Museum. Exhibited work comes from the private icon collection of Emmanuel and Argie Tiliakos (Winchester, MA) and Carleton’s Special Collections, offering visitors a unique opportunity to learn about Orthodox visual culture and devotion through objects seldom on view. An icon (from the Greek term for “image”) is a work of religious art — most commonly a painting of a holy figure or figures. Particularly associated with Orthodox Christian traditions, icons are regarded principally as religious rather than art objects and hold a special place in private and public devotions in the Orthodox worlds. Because their function was much more important than the individual identities of the artists who made them, their creators are seldom known. Icons have exalted status because they aid faithful individuals in communing with the divine and gaining, if only for a moment, a glimpse of eternity.

Feb. 10, 8pm Ames Center, Burnsville Robert Dubac’s newest Off-Broadway hit has been described as one of the most hilarious, intelligent and scorching satirical attacks on idiocracy since Mark Twain. (And “idiocracy” isn’t even a word. How dumb is that?) The New York Times raves, “Riding shotgun with intelligence and absurdity, The Book Of Moron crashes head first into the barriers of sex, race, religion, politics and the media. It may be offensive to some but there’s laughter for all!” Having been brainwashed by a culture that worships Kardashians over character, Trump over truth and selfies over self-effacement, Dubac begins his journey with one simple question: Who am I? What do I believe? What’s the point? Okay, that’s three questions, but suffice to say he has no answers. Just voices. Inner voices who come to life with precision and wit. One by one they pull him into a hysterical alternative universe of critical thought in search of the bigger picture. Northfield Public Library Author Talks
The Northfield Public Library is hosting several author conversations in February, each featuring a Minnesota-connected writer. Award-winning writer Peter Geye kicks off the month as part of SELCO’s Winter Tour of Minnesota Book Award Authors. Winner of the Minnesota book award in 2017 for his novel Wintering, he joins local bibliophiles on Monday, Feb. 5, at 7pm. Barefoot in the Park at the Paradise
Barefoot in the Park is one of legendary playwright Neil Simon’s first comedies, and one of his most beloved. Following the early days of Corie and Paul Bratter’s married life in the top floor of a New York City brownstone, it’s filled with warmth and in the hands of the always excellent Merlin Players, loads of comedy zest. Directed by Julianna Skluzacek, the show opens at the Paradise Center for the Arts in Faribault on Feb. 23 at 7:30pm, and runs two weekends through March 3. For more information, go to paradisecenterforthearts.org or call 507/332-7372.

In the first days of February, just after playing the Surf Ballroom, 100 miles south of Northfield in Clear Lake, Iowa, Holly, Valens and the Bopper all died in a plane crash. The Winter Dance Party in Northfield annually celebrates the sound and style of the legendary music makers of this era as interpreted by local musicians. Make sure to check it out and bring your dancing shoes and some black horn-rimmed glasses. Scheduled to perform this year are: Mark Allen, Forrest and the Rangers, and the Ballroom Surfers.

Tamale Traditions by Maria P. Estrada, owner, Maria’s Tacohut & Concessions and Maria’s Catering When my family immigrated into this country in 1986, we brought our traditions with us. I learned to love and cook Mexican food before it was “cool and trendy.” Homemade tortillas, salsas and tamale making is basic everyday cooking in my home. When we moved from Texas to Minnesota, I learned that baking cookies during Christmas season was a tradition in most households. Not in our home! Tamale-making is our Christmas tradition. We couldn’t find any of the ingredients for the tamales in the Faribault/Northfield area back then, so we would drive to St. Paul to visit a Mexican market where we found all the ingredients we

needed. Nowadays you can find all the ingredients for Mexican cooking all over in Southern Minnesota. Traditionally the tamale making starts on Dec. 22. We cook the meat, usually pork, seed the peppers and clean the corn husks. On the 23rd we prepare the dough and sauce, season the pork, soak the corn husks and start the process of spreading the corn dough on the husks, adding the pork filling, wrapping them tight. Finally we steam them in a special pot called Tamalera. The process ends about 10 hours later. On Christmas Eve, we go to church, come home and enjoy the fruit of our labor! Tamales, beans, salsas,

salad and guacamole is the traditional Christmas dinner menu in our house. We joke about how we unwrap more tamales than presents on Christmas. We always make enough tamales to carry us through until New Year’s Eve. We have kept this family tradition going throughout the years, and last year the tamale-making session was hosted by my niece and her husband at their home, where 12 of us sat around the table and made tamales, including a 14-month-old baby, who is just learning her family’s traditions. The good news for you is that you don’t have to wait until Christmas to enjoy some homemade tamales! Maria’s Catering can take care of your tamale cravings. We make tamales every week, and

We add it to pizza sauce and wings because we like to get creative in the kitchen. By supporting our business, those who purchase our products are also supporting five other local businesses. February is Heart Health Month by Stephanie Aman, Marketing and Community Relations Manager, Just Food Co-op February is Heart Health Month and we are celebrating at Just Food Co-op. There are many great choices that you can make in the aisles that can help support your goals of keeping your heart healthy – your ticker needs you to take care of it! Eating fruits and veggies is always doing right by your heart. My personal favorite is a delicious colorful green salad (mixed greens and spinach) with raspberries or blueberries, crunchy veggies like red peppers and cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, creamy avocado, heart-healthy walnuts from our bulk department, all dressed with balsamic vinegar mixed with avocado oil. It’s so good and so full of good nutrients. You get sweet, crunchy and a little salty all in one little salad and it’s very satisfying. Chocolate makes the list of good choices. Dark chocolate, in moderation, is considered heart healthy. With an abundance of flavonols and its ability to act as an antioxidant, it sure sounds like

a great reason to have a piece. Are you looking to up your game a bit and still have that chocolate flavor that you crave? Our co-op also carries cacao powder, a superfood and the most pure form of chocolate; it is thought to offer the highest levels of antioxidants, as well as being rich in magnesium. Add it to some yogurt with honey for a nice treat. While it might be ideal to eat all your nutrients in food, we know that it is sometimes very hard to eat all the right things. Our wellness department is here to help fill that gap with aisles that are full of heart healthy options, including specialty supplements to specifically support women’s heart health, fish oils and many more options to support your nutritional needs. Your heart will thank you, your joints will thank you, your nails and hair will thank you – for eating your nutrients! Find out more at justfood.coop

What means more to a community than a good beer? by Tonja Clay, co-owner, Imminent Brewing Well, quite a bit, actually, but can anyone really deny the important role beer can play in building a strong community?
that community to support the brewery. It’s a handin-hand thing: the brewery is there for the people, and the people keep the brewery running.
When people – friends or strangers – come together, food and beverage are almost always present, and usually as an incentive. It’s a simple truth: if you want to bring people together, offer to feed them.
That’s why we refer to Imminent Brewing as “Northfield’s Living Room.” Our space is here for friends, family, neighbors, strangers, kids, and, yes, even dogs, to come together. You can sit at the bar and chat with whoever is sitting next to you (or the person who just poured you that beer). You can sit around one of our larger tables, or our coffee table, or out on our spacious patio.
As we have evolved, we have learned that good beer, enjoyed responsibly, has been among the strongest of attractions. Some of the mightiest cities in Europe were built around local breweries. Pubs and taverns have often been the chosen gathering places for town hall meetings and civic celebrations.
A brew pub is a place we can come together, imbibe a pint or two of great beer and enjoy fellowship in our wonderful community.
Local breweries have often been a part of a local identity, with towns known for specific types of ale or lager that could only come from that region. That strengthened both civic pride and the local economy. In 2016, The Atlantic published an article that said a local craft brewery is an unofficial sign of a thriving community, citing the importance of entrepreneurship to a local economy, as well as willingness of

Café Royal by Adam Gebler, manager, MGM Wine & Spirits The habit of having coffee after dinner is not as much a cultural staple today as it once was; however, there are many of us who still enjoy this tradition. Instead, today’s dinner parties will continue with sweeter wines as often as they do with coffee. In an age where coffee is enjoying a popularity verging on religion, perhaps it’s time to revitalize coffee’s post-meal standing by bringing back one of coffee’s long-lost companions – cognac.
used.) Some believe that adding the cognac directly to the coffee is the best example of synergy there is. Personally, I think you can’t go wrong either way, but there are many other avenues to explore. We have all heard of the Irish Coffee, but its lesserknown predecessor, the Café Royal, should make an appearance at everyone’s next dinner party. As the name suggests, this French concoction is the flashier way of mixing cognac into your coffee. Start with a splash of cognac in the bottom of the coffee cup, add a teaspoon or two of sugar, depending on how sweet you like it, light the cognac with a match, and let the sugars caramelize. Then simply add the coffee to the cup and more cognac to taste.
Coffee and cognac can be as simple as the name suggests; pour a healthy dose of cognac into your cup of coffee; however, there is a healthy debate across northern Germany and France about what is the best way to savor this pairing. Some say that it is best to serve the cognac in a separate glass, If you love your coffee, or if you’re looking for a allowing the guests to sip either coffee or cognac, one then the other. Kickstarter Cakes by Kelsy Wittmeier, owner, Bluebird Cakery Bluebird Cakery humbly started as a small farmer’s market stand in the summer of 2014. We had a very warm welcome to the Faribault community so one year later we launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to open a store. Thanks to an awesome outpouring of support we raised more than $29,000 to aid us in opening our own store front and kitchen in downtown Faribault. Today, Bluebird Cakery is a gourmet cake shop that specializes in baked from scratch cupcakes, rolls, scones, cookies, wedding cakes and cheesecakes made daily. These treats are served alongside fresh gourmet local coffee and tea.
Our continuing success led us to open a second store front in Mankato where we continue our pursuit of deliciousness!

The Contented Cow, Northfield Kitty’s uncle is Bunny Wailer of Bob Marley and the Wailers fame, so music is literally in her blood. She grew up listening to a healthy blend of reggae, rap and R&B. At a young age Jack discovered his vaudevillian great-grandfather’s phonograph record collection and spent his childhood listening to cats like Bing Crosby, Al Jolson and Rudy Vallee. As fate would have it, oddball ukulele legend Tiny Tim moved in next door and became Jack’s babysitter. That rich musical stew forms the blend of Jack and Kitty’s Emmy Award-winning artistic approach. It’s organic and acoustic with nothing but positive vibes.
