The Church Basement Ladies: Rise Up, O Men Feb. 19-20, 1pm Ames Center, Burnsville
Fans of the musical comedy series Church Basement Ladies will finally get to know more about the men of East Cornucopia Lutheran Church. This side-splitting, uplifting peek into the lives of the rural Norwegian Lutherans features familiar faces: Mrs. Mavis Gilmerson, Mrs. Vivian Snustad and Mrs. Karin Engleson who would never leave the basement kitchen unattended, of course (who would make bars for the youth group meeting?). But as they busy themselves with preparations for their church’s participation in the town’s 1964 Centennial Celebration, we get to see their coming and goings from the eyes of the menfolk, who have their own problems to solve. Karin’s husband Elroy, farmer Carl and Great War vet Arlo are joined in brotherhood by series staple Pastor E.L. Gunderson. Their camaraderie unites them as they deal with furnace salesmen, looming retirement, rival Protestant denominations, the Pastor’s bad jokes and Arlene’s evenworse cooking. Tickets: $32, available at the Ames Center Box Office, 800/982-2787 or ticketmaster.com.

New Prague Veterans Memorial MusicFest
By Felicia Crosby
Yeti Fest
With our long-delayed winter finally making its icy presence known, the time feels right to celebrate that shaggy-bodied, mythical monster of the Northwoods, the Yeti. Fortunately, the folks at Imminent Brewery have got this one; join them at their downtown Northfield location beginning at 4pm on Feb. 8, for Yeti Fest. The festival continues through the 9th, and features, among other things, a long john contest, a fat tire bike ride, Yeti story time, live music, an ice bar and, yes, a Yeti lookalike contest. For more information, go to imminentbrewing.com, and start growing that beard.
Artisan Cheese Day
Sometimes the best cure for the winter blues is comfort food, and there’s little that’s more comforting – or more blues-banishing – than excellent artisan cheese. Join the good folks at Ferndale Market in Cannon Falls on Saturday, Feb. 9, from 10am to 1pm, for a delicious, wide-ranging cheese tasting, and see how mouth-watering local cheese can be. Meltin-your-mouth homemade bread from Brick Oven Bakery in Northfield will be served alongside and while you’re noshing, you can listen to live music and shop more than 100 area farmers and food makers. What a cozy event. For more information, go to ferndalemarketonline.com or call 507/263-4556.

Want to do something good while having a great time? Then head out to the New Prague Veterans Memorial MusicFest at the American Legion Park Ballroom in New Prague on Feb. 9 for a music-filled, all day festival – all while raising money for the Veterans Memorial. The first band plays at 1pm, and you can also take part in silent auctions, register for door prizes and enjoy food and beverages while moving to music by the Charlie Sticha Band, Jumpin’ at the Woodside, New Prague Area Concertina Club, Nite Time Boogie Band and others. Last band plays at 9pm. Tickets available at First Bank & Trust, and the City Club Bar.
Family Snowshoe and Animal Signs Walk
To the untrained eye, all seems to go quiet outdoors during the winter. Not true, of course, and the River Bend Nature Center in Faribault invites us to see the wildlife that continues to thrive through our coldest season. Join a naturalist on Friday, Feb. 15 and 25, from 1 to 2:30pm for a peaceful, all-ages tour through the woods; cost includes snowshoe rentals that can be enjoyed for the whole day. For more information, go to rbnc.org or call 507/332-7151.
The Wizard of Oz
The Northfield Arts Guild’s productions for this past year have centered on the theme of coming home, and there is no character in fiction more intent on getting back to her own back yard than beloved, tornado-tossed Dorothy. Now you can follow her journey with the Tin Man, Scarecrow and Lion, when the Art’s Guild’s kid-centered Purple Door Theater presents the Wizard of Oz. Directed by child-whisperer Rachel Haider, this all-student production brings the non-musical version of this classic story to magical, joyful life. Beware, though: although the show opens on Feb. 22, that performance is already sold out. Grab tickets for Feb. 23, 24, or March 1, 2 or 3, before it all flies off without you. For tickets and information, go to northfieldartsguild.org or call 507/645-8877. © The Entertainment Guide

WELLNESS RETREAT
Nourish Your Soul
A nourishing weekend away with like-minded folks sounds like just what our winter weary souls need. Perhaps a yoga practice, a meditation session, hiking in the woods and maybe even a scrumptious massage (ahhhhh, I can already feel the tension evaporating from my shoulders).

to “you.” The quiet, supportive focus of a retreat gives us the gentle structure to allow a deeper quiet and mindfulness that is often times just not accessible in our regular lives.
When we think of a wellness retreat, we often think of remote places that require extensive travel and big bucks. The good news is it doesn’t have to be that way. Finding a retreat experience close to home saves money, time and all the planning that goes into an exotic adventure.
Let’s face it. For some of us, journaling, meditating, practicing yoga and eating right are just hard to fit into our regular groove. A retreat gives us permission to do those things our hearts are longing for: reflection, creating and becoming inspired. There is nothing like stepping away from our daily routines into a serene setting with rest, relaxation and inspiration as the main focus.
Deciding to attend a wellness retreat is the perfect gift to give ourselves – the ultimate in self-care. It’s an ideal time to actually be present and pay attention
More than anything, a wellness retreat is the perfect time to rest and recharge. The inspiration you carry forward is the big ole’ cherry on top! You’ll learn

On Nov. 11, 1863, two companies of soldiers – one composed of farm boys from Austin and one composed of men from the river towns near Winona – held up a Union train in Missouri. With their guns drawn, 38 men faced down Union officers as they freed a family of slaves. How this strange event came to be – and the consequences it brought to these Minnesota boys – is the subject of this little-known but highly significant tale from the Civil War. Presented by Karl Fredrickson. Free admission.

Talk: Honey, Olives, Octopus: A Hellenized Barbarian Raids the Greek Table • 5pm Language & Dining Center Room 104, Carleton College, Northfield
For a decade, American poet Christopher Bakken traveled across Greece researching the basic elements of the Greek table (olives, bread, fish, cheese, beans, etc.), looking for the single best representative of each. That delicious quest led him to consider the cultural, historical and sometimes archaeological strata of the Greek culinary tradition, pondering the continuities between contemporary Greece and the ancient civilization from which it sprang. Bakken is the author of three books of poetry, most recently Eternity & Oranges, as well as the culinary memoir Honey, Olives, Octopus: Adventures at the Greek Table. When we think of Valentine’s day we often think of chocolates and roses. However, that perfect bottle of wine is what launches a thoughtfully-prepared dinner into that truly romantic evening. Some people may prefer a juicy and unctuous Cabernet or Bordeaux to deepen a rich meal. Some may prefer that touch of sweetness that only a Sauternes or Mead can pair. Simply Fodder For Your Next Cocktail Party By Sherri Faye ©2019
It’s that time of year again… Where tens of thousands, nay, millions of people are enslaved by a holiday fabricated by greeting card and candy companies. Featuring a small-statured, half-naked, homicidal maniac with wings who shoots people in the heart with arrows, no less. Oh, the humanity! I mean, I suppose it’s romantic. If you are sado-masochistic. Sidebar: What exactly does Cupid do the rest of the year? Maybe he/she could get a border security gig. I heard they’re short-handed. Anyhoooo… This year I’m hosting a ‘Happily Single Party.’ Inviting my closest (and mostly single) friends to join me for an evening of imbibing, replete with games, movies, munchies, and storytelling. Highlighted by ‘worst date/boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse/ divorce/breakup’ ever stories. Rule #1. These stories must be punctuated with humor. Rule #2. Bonus points for triumphant endings. Rule #3. No violinplaying, broken-hearted, alligator-tear-flooded, waxing-suicidal, depressing crap allowed. That would be a total drag. Speaking of movies… Lately I’ve been binge-watching shows and movies on Netflix, Amazon, and the like. I know, I’m retired, but I’m not just sitting on my ass scarfing down bonbons. Being the multitasker that I am, I simultaneously attend to household duties, work on creative/art projects, care for my grandkid, and throw in some yoga, etc… Besides, I don’t even like bonbons. And, more importantly, I don’t want to blow it! I’m on a successful track with my mogetarian (mostly vegetarian) fare, and hitting the gym. BUT, I may treat myself to some corn syrup and fat-infested goodies at the party, knowing full well my gallbladder will likely attack me later. At least I’ll have avoided being skewered by some rogue pseudo-cherub’s medieval projectile. Additional benefits to this binge-watching include: A welcome relief from chilly weather, no berserk politicians, and a lessening of general seasonal malaise. Also, many times these shows are creatively or personally inspiring. Something that will serve me well for minutes, hours, weeks, and quite possibly years to come. Happy fake holiday! Stay warm & don’t sell out. “If love is the answer, could you rephrase the question?” ~ Lily Tomlin

Fronted and founded by fight director, songwriter and guitarist Annie Enneking, Annie and the Bang Bang is a Minneapolis rock band. They craft dreamily potent grungemeets-late-sixties-dark-rock and pop gems that value energy, animal intelligence and beautiful mischief. Enneking believes songwriting is an act of spiritual archeology and so sifts through words to find bones of song, telling stories about being a person in a world full of people. She relies on the artistry, thick invention and dig-right-down-into-it-ness of the Bang Bangs: the stacked chording and “just what the song wants” guitar of John Riedlinger, the lead-withthe-heart bass monster that is Kari Tweiten and the heavy adventure and sharp-corner-turning of new drummer, Mike Kittel. Cirque Mechanics – 42ft: A Menagerie of Mechanical Marvels • 7pm Sheldon Theatre, Red Wing
Step right up, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, to the Cirque Mechanics’ wonder-filled world of gears and canvas, pulleys and sawdust. At the center of every circus rests a 42ft ring full of thrills, laughs and excitement. The company dares us to leap into the circus ring and experience the timelessness of this ever-evolving art form. The show’s unique mechanical interpretation of the traditional and its story full of the lore of the historic one-ring circus create a welcoming place – like a big top – where we can be amazed. The action in 42ft is full of theatricality and a modern sensibility, showcasing a galloping mechanical metal horse and a rotating tent frame for strongmen, acrobats and aerialists. Cirque Mechanics, inspired by modern circus, finds its roots in the mechanical and its heart in the stories of American industrial ingenuity. The shows, imbedded in realism, display a raw quality rarely found in modern circus. Cirque Mechanics’ signature style is wrapped in acrobatics, mechanical marvels and a bit of clowning around. Tickets: $25-$48, available at sheldontheatre.org.

Drive South • 8:30-11:30pm
The Tony Rook Band • 8-11pm
An acoustic trio performing eclectic folk and slices of Americana music fused with folk, country, rhythm and blues and rock ‘n’ roll. Mark Jeunemann, Mark Hedenstrom and Scott Cummings have been involved in the music scene for more than 20 years. With backgrounds rooted in stage, songwriting and recording, they paint a picture of real people striving for depth, beauty and emotion, creating a tone of genuine heartache and joy that brings about meaning in life.
Tavern Lounge, Northfield
Born and raised in North Carolina, Tony Rook is no bluegrass novice. He picked up his first guitar at the age of 12, rocking out in the local music scene before returning to his bluegrass roots. Now a multi-instrumentalist, he describes his music as “incredibly personal.” His songs convey real-life experiences and hardships through soulful lyrical arrangements and intricate guitar riffs. The Tony Rook Band members are Brent Fuqua (mandolin and vocals), Terry Johnson (bass and vocals) and Graham Sones (banjo and vocals). Fuqua brings a modern approach to his playing, his breaks in particular. He’s a strong instrumentalist whose creativity, enthusiasm and energy helps drive TRB. As its bassist, Johnson is TRB’s backbone and brings those high tenor harmonies. Sones brings a driving banjo to the quartet. He’s extremely versatile and can easily shift from melodic fiddle tunes to a straight-ahead Scruggs style. More at tonyrookmusic.com.

He was the winner of the 2017 Upper Midwest Singer/Songwriter Championship and the 2015 Pen 2 Paper Fiction award. Most importantly, Rosen loves sharing songs and stories. More at thegatl.com.
