Monica Bill Barnes and Company Happy Hour
Feb. 7-8, 6:30 and 8:30pm Sheldon Theatre, Red Wing
This immersive dance-theater show finds the cringe-worthy humor and life-changing pathos in an after work get-together. Two men, played by women, attempt to bluster and seduce their way through an office party, with hilarious and poignant results. It’s a subversive move, leading audiences to question expectations of women on stage with a free drink in their hands and microwave popcorn flying through the air. This special, site-specific event is performed in the Sheldon’s 3rd-floor studio. The event runs approximately 60 minutes, and space is limited to 50 audience members per showing. Tickets: $20, available at sheldontheatre.org. Translations
Feb. 8 and 13-15, 7:30pm; Feb. 9, 6pm; Feb. 15, 2pm Kelsey Theater, St. Olaf College, Northfield
Written by Brian Friel, directed by Peter Christian Hansen. Ireland in 1833 is at a moment of historic change and an ancient culture and language are about to be swept away. A national education system, with English as the official language, is to replace the rural, Irish-speaking, Classics-loving hedge-schools of the villages whose very names are to be Anglicized by the British dispatched to the area. Against this 19th-century backdrop, age-old stories of loyalty, conquest and tragic love unfold in all their beauty and heartbreak. Tickets: $10, available at 507-786-3332.

Feb. 13, 8pm Ames Center, Burnsville
This Off-Broadway hit comedy is a one-man fusion of theater and stand-up, based on the New York Times #1 best-selling book of the last decade by John Gray. Moving swiftly through a series of vignettes, the show covers everything from dating and marriage to the bedroom. This hysterical show will have couples elbowing each other all evening as they see themselves on stage. Sexy and fast-paced, this show is definitely for adults, but will leave audiences laughing and giggling like little kids. It’s a great recipe for a date night: a little storytelling blended with some comedy and a dash of sage wisdom from the book. Tickets: $60, available at the Ames Center Box Office, 800-982-2787 or ticketmaster.com. Everybody Loves Opal

Saving Money for Millennials ... and Everyone Else! B
uying a home is still a great goal for most people. It is a form of forced savings and provides necessary shelter. Here in Minnesota, individuals and families can purchase a home with no money down if they have the income and good credit to make the monthly mortgage payments. Mortgage companies can usually give the best terms, i.e. lowest cost, if the buyer puts down 20 percent of the sale price. Family money gifting is sometimes how people purchase a home, but not everyone has that kind of financial help available or will choose to use it. Money management is not taught in most schools anymore and we are all surrounded 24/7 with wonderful things and services to spend our money on with the click of a key. As a graduate student at the University of Illinois, I taught this class to college freshmen. Saving just for the sake of saving is not exciting. The class began with all students keeping track of all their own spending for a month. We also used a hypothetical average family for the local community to talk about family financial management. Using this family, we planned a model budget for a year. It was always interesting that there was never enough family income to meet all the needs and wants! Economics is still about allocating scarce resources.

You may need to learn new skills, like cooking at home or buying gently used clothing and furniture. There are some good books and websites on these topics. Look for community education programs on these topics. Having a plan can help you gain some personal control over your money. Postscript: On Jan. 23, 2020, the company behind the FICO credit scoring that mortgage companies use to decide if customers can borrow for home purchases made a big announcement. Fair Isaac Corporation announced that consumer debt will be considered when scoring potential borrowers. This change will make it even more difficult for potential homeowners to borrow money for buying homes. Your personal money management is critical if you want to purchase your own home.
You may have educational loans, credit card debt, car loans, medical bills, childcare costs and car payments to juggle. Write all your monthly and yearly bills down along with

HAPPENINGS Friday, February 28, continued Chris Holm • 5:30-8:30pm
Vintage Escapes Winery, Kilkenny
Minneapolis-based acoustic folk, blues and country musician Chris Holm is a fingerstyle guitar picker and harmonica player. He channels the high-spirited liveliness of Charley Patton, thumping on his suitcase drum, attacking his guitar strings with abandon and shouting along in a gravelly howl, only to later channel the lonesome sounds of a weeping slide guitar and a blues yodel. Reunion Stage, Northfield
Chicago/NYC/Minneapolis singer, guitarist, songwriter Courtney Yasmineh draws from a poisoned well that runs deep – harsh reflection, brutal frankness, bittersweet inspiration, brief flights of sexual fantasy and blistering romance, but most of all, transcendent saving graces. With each album she continues to expand her musical universe, stretching across the spectrum from indie pop to alt-country to full-tilt rock ‘n’ roll, all the while writing better and better genuinely smart songs that are deeply personal yet touch on subjects and feelings everyone can relate to. More at courtneyyasmineh.com.
Pre-recital talk 6:30-7pm with Bösendorfer’s Kirk Davis, St. Olaf piano technician, Dennis Johnson and St. Olaf piano faculty member, Christopher Atzinger. Recital at 7pm will be made up of various faculty members performing on the new Bösendorfer concert grand piano.
