Feb. 24, 7:30pm Ames Center, Burnsville This loving tribute and send-up takes audiences through a laughter-infused version of all six seasons of the beloved show. There will be puns, cosmopolitans and audience participation. For anyone who remembers the naked dress, the tantric sex demonstration, the post-it note and “he’s just not that into you,” One Woman Sex and the City: A Parody on Love, Friendship, and Shoes will provide a great reminder of why this series and its characters have stayed so firmly in women’s hearts and minds. Ex-tennis professional Tony Wendice married his wife, Margot, for her money. Now he plans to kill her for the same reason. When his precise murder plot goes awry, can he improvise an equally deadly plan B? The exciting ending of this psychologically suspenseful story, which has thrilled audiences for decades, will leave you breathless at the edge of your seat. He broods over lost love, ponders his surroundings and reflects back on his life. A warm, funny and deeply human glance into the mind of a strange and misanthropic individual. Written toward the end of Beckett’s life, Rockaby is a short, poetic meditation on dying. An old woman sits in a rocking chair while her own voice soothes her into stillness. This play is a quiet exploration of letting go. Refreshments and discussion will follow each performance. Tickets: $10, available at the box office 507/786-8987 M-F 11am-4pm beginning Feb. 27. Auditions: The Tempest
Mar. 5-6, 6-8:30pm Northfield Arts Guild Theater Directed by Deon Haider, The Tempest takes place on a mysterious island – home of spirits, monsters, secrets, a former Duke (the Prospero) with a command of sorcery, and his daughter. The play begins with a giant storm conjured by the Prospero and designed to strand those responsible for stealing his Dukedom. The storm also brings a cast of colorful characters to the island’s shore and Prospero is ready to receive them with a plot to exact revenge. Delightful magic, young romance and physical comedy offset the darkness in Shakespeare’s farewell to the stage. Most roles are open to any gender or age and will be cast with adult and late-teens actors. There are also ensemble roles available for youth going into 4th grade and up (movement and expression is more important to these parts). Actors only need to attend one audition date, but should expect to stay for the duration of the time. Auditions will consist of warm-ups, acting and physicality exercises and reading from the script. No preparation is necessary, but arrive dressed for movement. Performances will be June 9-17.

First Thursday Pub Night
“Lipstick’s Traces: A Jazz Age Chronicle”
Have you got a penchant for the flapper era, the Great Gatsby and/or the jazz scene that went with it? Then don’t miss Steve Kelly (Professor of Music Emeritus, Carleton College, Northfield) and his presentation, “Lipstick’s Traces: A Jazz Age Chronicle,” March 6, 7pm at the Northfield Library. He’ll be exploring the jazz age culture of the ’20s, as told through New Yorker columns by “Lipstick.” Lois Bancroft Long (aka Lipstick) graduated from Vassar College in 1922, worked at Vogue and Vanity Fair, and then landed at The New Yorker to write a column on New York nightlife. From the eyes of a “flapper,” says Wikipedia, “she chronicled her nightly escapades of drinking, dining and dancing (with political commentary thrown in to boot). She wrote of the decadence of the decade with an air of aplomb, wit and satire. Because her readers did not know who she was, Long often jested in her columns about being a ‘short squat maiden of 40’ or a ‘kindly, old, bearded gentleman.’”
Tom Paxton and the Don Juans After more than half a century of performing around the world, writing and recording, Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner and folk icon Tom Paxton is teaming up with the Grammy winning singer/songwriter duo The Don Juans (Don Henry and Jon Vezner) March 7, 7pm at Zumbrota’s Crossings at Carnegie. Henry, Vezner and Paxton’s songs have been recorded by a range of artists from John Denver to Bob Dylan, Harry Belafonte to John Mellencamp, Dolly Parton to Joan Baez. This historic collaboration brings Paxton in on guitar, vocals and stories; Henry on guitar, vocals, uke, banjo and grins; and Vezner on piano, vocals, guitar, uke and the kitchen sink. Don’t miss this chance to catch these folk and country icons up close within the intimate setting of the Crossings.

If you’re a country music fan you’ll want to take in the Lakeville Area Arts Center’s March 8 Pub Night performance by The Farmer’s Daughters. This new offering of the Arts Center features general admission pub-style seating along with craft beer, wine and pub food. As for the entertainment, these two women out of North Branch, backed up by a talented band, belt out country top 40s and they have a lot of fun doing it. Newer to the arena, having formed in 2013, they are making an impression and being sought out to open for regional, Nashville and local acts, been offered a realty TV show and a chance to be on America’s Got Talent. Catch ‘em live and local while you can.
Jack and Kitty
We’ve written a short on this duo before...but can’t not put a flag up for Jack and Kitty once again – they are a must-see for the kids. This husband and wife out of Minneapolis met at an arts high school, fell in love and are spending the rest of their lives making music and art together. Both have unique roots in music: Jack’s neighbor/babysitter growing up was ukulele-playing singer/icon Tiny Tim. Kitty’s uncle is Bunny Wailer – as in Bob Marley and the Wailers. For Jack and Kitty – it’s all evolved into their co-creating and co-starring in a hit pre-school kids television series that currently runs on more than 150 PBS member stations nationwide, is broadcast into 175 countries worldwide and reaches 5 million families every day. They were also tapped by the U.S. Pentagon to tour and entertain military families throughout Europe, the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Their work has been nominated for six Emmy Awards. And now they are back in Northfield. You can catch them March 11, 10am at the Northfield Arts Guild Theater.
Livingston Taylor Comes to Faribault
Tom Paxton
The Don Juans
Livingston Taylor – exceptional guitarist, songwriter, singer and storyteller performs March 16, 7:30pm at Shattuck-St. Mary’s in Faribault. The youngest of four very musical siblings (including James Taylor), Boston-based Livingston is a full professor at Berklee College of Music where his course on Stage Performance is consistently voted the most popular at the College. In recognition of his 50 years of music making, the mayor of Boston and governor of Massachusetts declared Jan. 18, 2017 “Livingston Taylor Day.” His hits include I Will Be in Love with You, I’ll Come Running, I Can Dream of You and Boatman. He’s toured with, among others, Linda Ronstadt, Jethro Tull and Jimmy Buffet. With a musical range from folk to pop, gospel to jazz – from upbeat storytelling to touching ballads – he peppers his shows with personal stories, anecdotes and ineffable warmth.

Real Estate Issue
As spring approaches and Minnesotans start to come out of their winter huddle, many people begin to consider relocating or upgrading their homes. To help our readers navigate the real estate market The Entertainment Guide has brought together some of southern Minnesota’s local experts in the industry to share their wisdom. Whether you are thinking of buying a new home, selling your current home or just dreaming, you’re sure to learn something in this special real estate section.
7 Things You Must Do When Preparing to Sell Your Home by Tim Freeland You’re about to take the plunge into the real estate market, specifically the local sellers’ market. If you want to get what you want in the time you want, home preparation is key. How devoted you are to making your house shine like a gem can increase its perceived value by several thousand dollars, ensuring that it will sell in a reasonable time. #1 – Make space. Remove clutter, keep the home presentable. Give it that “cozy home for the family” feel. The purchaser should be able to easily visualize themselves living in their new abode. This includes everything from wall clutter to that man-cave clutter. Buy totes or boxes and store it off site or in the garage for now. #2 – Character/personality. It’s extremely important that your property doesn’t come across as a hotel room. Keep your personal touches, just don’t overdo the décor. Some imperfections can offer that homey feel. #3 – Way of life. Present the home to the prospective buyer in such a way that they can see how they would enjoy life in their new neighborhood. Show them how simple it is to throw a barbecue or have your neighbors over to hang out around your fire pit, deck, patio or backyard. #4 – Give it a paint job. Give your house a paint job – even if it does not need it. Sale prices can vary in the thousands based on this point alone. Even if you just paint one room, the smell will send subliminal messages of “newness” throughout the home.
tor will. People are oftentimes on the lookout for imperfections because they are subliminally looking for reasons NOT to buy the home. Professionally clean or replace worn carpet. #6 – Light, air and smells. Open the windows, light a fire, burn sweet-smelling candles, anything that plays to the senses of the potential buyer. The kitchen is an essential part of this. Add some fruit to the table and air out all the cabinets so they don’t smell of spices when opened. Fresh curtains and carpet can improve the smell of your home tremendously. #7 – Use an agent. You need the right teammate to present the property in the best light and to know what to highlight and what to downplay. This person needs to be able to paint a pretty picture for prospective buyers. It is proven that using an agent will gain you a higher price than not using an agent. This is all they do, and they’ve learned tricks of the trade over the years. Overall, in order to sell your home for the best price and in a timely manner, you need to prepare. Preparation can make or break the sale and this is not an area to cut corners. People put off cranking through their to-do lists for years, only to find they can get most of the work done within a week’s time when focused. Don’t be afraid to ask your Realtor to recommend contractors or handymen to help. A Realtor will give you tips that you probably wouldn’t have thought of.
Tim Freeland is a licensed real estate agent with Edina Realty. You can read his blog at timfreeland.com or contact him at 507/581-5038.
#5 – Fix it. Eliminate any exposed or hidden cracks, leaky faucets, cracked windows, etc. If the buyer doesn’t see these imperfections, the home inspec-

Planning Your Transition into Compact Single Level Living
Home Equity Loans and Lines of Credit
by Jan Stevens
by Mary Loftus
Oftentimes, thinking about moving from a longtime family home into a townhouse or condo is daunting. Folks do not know where to begin; family members may not be available to help. Your Realtor will know how to plan this process for a smooth transition.
If you’re thinking about making some home improvements or looking for ways to pay for your child’s college education, you may consider tapping into your home’s equity – the difference between what your home could sell for and what you owe on the mortgage – as a way to cover costs.
I think the easiest way to begin is to find and purchase your next home. It is simpler to begin when you know where you are going to live and easier to decide what possessions you will keep from your old home. The market in our region is very tight for one-level living townhomes and condos. As a buyer you are competing with cash buyers or buyers who have arranged for a bridge loan, which is like cash, a short-term mortgage on your existing home. After you sell your existing home, you pay off the bridge. Sellers in our area usually expect a closing within 60 days of the purchase agreement being signed. Rent a storage unit and begin emptying out your current home. I give my clients the University of Minnesota workbook, Who Gets Grandma’s Yellow Pie Plate: A Guide to Passing on Personal Possessions. Do not be surprised or hurt if family and/or friends do not want china or crystal or furniture. Younger people today are likely to be minimalists and not want extra “stuff.” Your Realtor will have the names of professionals who can assist you in selling and giving away your extra household items. After you have moved into your new home, finish getting your current home ready for sale. Again, your Realtor will know who can help you clean, paint and get it ready for a fast sale at the best price. Homes that are ready to move into tend to sell faster and at a higher price than ones that are cluttered and need work. This does not mean that you need to renovate your existing home, but it should be sparkling clean and “refreshed” with minor repairs and some new paint. At your leisure, tackle the contents of any storage unit you may have rented. If you don’t miss anything, sell it or give it away. Then it’s on to enjoying your new easier-to-manage home! Jan Stevens, Realtor at Coldwell Banker South Metro, is a residential housing specialist with 25 years in the business. She can be found at cbsouthmetro.com or 507/663-1234 x219.

Home equity financing can be set up as a loan or a line of credit. With a home equity loan, your lender advances you the total loan amount upfront, while a home equity line of credit provides a source of funds you can draw on as needed. You repay a home equity loan with equal monthly payments over a fixed term, just like your original mortgage. A home equity line of credit – also known as a HELOC – is a revolving line of credit, much like a credit card. You can borrow as much as you need, any time you need it, by writing a check or using a debit card connected to the account. You may not exceed your credit limit. Because a HELOC is a line of credit, you make payments only on the amount you actually borrow, not the full amount available. When considering a home equity loan or line of credit, shop around and compare loan plans offered by banks and mortgage companies. Shopping can help you get a better deal. Many banks offer an interest rate promotion for a particular length of time. For instance, you may be able to get a lower rate for the first year and a variable rate for the remainder of the term. Many banks, including Community Resource Bank, offer fixed-rate home equity loans and lines of credit as well. Remember that your home secures the amount you borrow through a home equity loan or line of credit. If you don’t pay your debt, the lender may pursue legal action to satisfy the debt. Lastly, Home Equity Loans and Lines of Credit may also give you certain tax advantages unavailable with some kinds of loans. Talk to an accountant or tax adviser for details. Mary Loftus, Vice President of Retail Banking (NMLS #1024647) has more than 30 years of lending experience. Call her at 507/645-4441 to find out more about home equity loans and lines of credit offered by Community Resource Bank, 1605 Heritage Drive, Northfield.

Replace Worn Carpet with LowMaintenance, Long-Life Laminate by Josh Horejsi Laminate flooring, originally called Pergo, is synthetic flooring invented in Sweden. It’s made by fusing several layers of different materials together using heat, pressure and adhesive. This material is printed to simulate a wide variety of natural flooring materials including hardwood, slate and ceramic tiles. Although sometimes meant to replicate wood flooring, it actually contains no wood materials. It is one of the most resilient and durable floor surfaces available. Ease of installation, low maintenance and long life are a few of the many reasons that laminate flooring has been a preferred choice of customers at Specialized Floor Coverings. Laminate has really evolved over the past few decades. Many have been drawn to it because of its scratch resistance and durability, but then are pleasantly surprised how realistic it looks when compared with hardwood flooring. Manufacturers are constantly improving design and surface textures and take many cues from the hardwood market. From sophisticated to rustic and everything in between, there are numerous great looks to choose from.
Those considering laminate flooring will be happy to know that its list of attributes keeps getting longer. Mannington Floors has just announced that they will now offer a waterproof coating called SpillShield, which protects laminate floors against pet messes, standing moisture and spills. Edges and sides of each plank are treated to wick away moisture and prevent it from penetrating the board and causing damage. This now makes laminate a smart choice for areas that were once off limits: bathrooms, laundry rooms, entryways and other areas prone to spills and moisture. To view the new laminate introductions and receive full product information on Mannington Laminate, visit Specialized Floor Coverings in Dundas. Consider shopping here for other beautiful, quality flooring including hardwood, carpet, luxury vinyl tile and more. Josh Horejsi is the owner/installer at Specialized Floor Coverings in Dundas. Clean Landscaping Trend – Adding Value to Your Home by Amy Voight
The ebbs and flows of landscaping trends keep us on our toes as designers and service providers to make sure we are providing you, the customer, with the latest and greatest. While some trends quickly fizzle out (to the relief of some of us) there are others that have a classic nature that lasts. One such trend, clean landscaping, isn’t really anything new. It just helps us embody the lifestyle we should have in our landscapes with a sensitivity to the environment around us. Clean Water: through careful design and plant placement in our landscapes, water can return to the ground without creating runoff issues and be purified through the process of draining through the soil enroute back to our aquifers. Rain gardens are a key element in making this process happen in suburban yards. These planting spaces can provide beauty and a host of other benefits. Rain barrels are a great way to harvest rain water and then use it as needed on your plants. Clean Air: planting trees provides large canopies that not only provide shade to cool in summer and cut back on energy usage, but also increase the carbon offset. Making thoughtful choices when it comes to running equipment or vehicles can also impact air quality around us.
give back something useful. An added benefit to growing food plants is you get to control the chemical exposure at your harvest. Dwarf Cherry and plum trees make great flowering ornamental trees, oregano and thyme have great flowers that blend into any perennial bed and blueberries can function as ornamental shrubs. A dedicated vegetable patch is not needed to harvest ripe tomatoes or a handful of beans. Be creative and use containers for compact veggie varieties or fill that empty space in your full-sun landscaping with a couple pepper plants. Clean Environments: reduce your garbage waste by composting appropriate materials and turning it into beneficial fertilizer. Recycle whenever available and be resourceful by creating new uses for old things instead of just throwing it in the trash. How will you take steps for a clean landscape this year? Work with a landscape professional to develop your plan, keeping the environment in mind for a better tomorrow. Preserving the Historic Northfield Depot
by Alice Thomas The preservation and renovation of the historic Northfield Depot will create a new community gathering place which promotes opportunities for social interaction and public events. In a town like Northfield, that’s good for economic development and the local real estate market. The brick 1888 Northfield Depot was built by the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad on the south side of 3rd Street. Notable building features included interior separate waiting rooms for men and women and wide exterior roof overhangs that gave passengers shelter when waiting outside. The railroad and depot played a crucial role in Northfield’s development. Farmers and millers relied on trains to transport products to market. Generations of college students used the depot. Merchants depended on salesmen who traveled by train. For decades, Northfielders gathered daily at the depot to hear national and international news. The depot was a campaign stop for several presidential candidates: William Howard Taft (1908), Theodore Roosevelt (1912) and Dwight D. Eisenhower (1952). The depot fell into disrepair after passenger service was suspended in 1969. When the railroad scheduled it for demolition in 2010, Save the Northfield Depot was founded and solicited the public’s vision of the future use (visitor’s center) and location (behind the Quarterback Club).

Once the depot was saved by moving it from railroad property in January 2016, efforts turned to repair and rehabilitation; significant work has taken place since the move. To replicate the original appearance, volunteers sawed the original foundation limestone into thinner pieces for placement on the concrete foundation. Some 1944 changes were reversed – the removed station master bay was restored; the two track-side doorways once converted into windows are again doorways; and the south wall and overhang removed in 1944 were rebuilt. All windows have been replaced. Volunteers cleaned the mortar from 4,000 salvaged bricks for use on the rebuilt areas: station master bay and south wall. On two sides of the depot, volunteers have removed old paint, repaired and repainted the eaves and brackets using original colors. Interior work by volunteers includes removal of 1944 features: plasterboard and plaster on the walls and a lowered, acoustical tile ceiling. Under the plaster was the original V-groove board walls with wainscoting. The original crown moulding, wainscoting trim, baseboard and window casings are missing, but will be replaced. Schoolhouse-style globe lights have been donated. The sculpture garden plan incorporates a water feature, seating, plantings, two donated sculptures and other amenities. The planned site complex includes the restored depot, new pavilion, city transit hub and sculpture garden. The completed project promises to provide a valuable community resource that is again a center of activity. Alice Thomas serves as the Secretary and Communications Chair on the board of Save the Northfield Depot. More at northfielddepot.org.

Cannon River Winery, Cannon Falls Live music from Tim & Ginny paired with the Rince na Chroi Irish Dancers. Cannon River Catering will present some delicious Irish foods.
Cannon River Winery, Cannon Falls A Twin Cities-based blues and rock band who knows how to put a smile on your face by adding a little sass to that Minnesota nice. Lead singer Erin McCawley likes dancing as much as she likes singing. You can’t help but tap your toes when Joey Gagliardi starts wailing on the blues harp or slaying it on the guitar. Add in the groove of the upright and downright bass by Robb Stearns and the rhythm of Bill Whelan on drums and you have really got something to dance to. Harrison Street Band breathes new life into old blues and revamps the roots. They play music that feels like embracing an old friend – there are times when it stings a little and other times that you can’t contain the joy. The New Standards • 7:30pm
