Contemporary American Painting [1945] – through Mar. 12 – In 1945 the Encyclopedia Britannica staged a sweeping examination of contemporary American painting from its art collection. An exemplary work by each of more than 100 well-respected artists toured the U.S., providing cultural access and aesthetic experiences to large numbers of everyday Americans. This exhibit seeks to recapture the essence of the monumental tour through paintings, drawings and prints chosen from the collections of Carleton College and Gustavus Adolphus College.

Glimpses of Eternity: Icons in the Orthodox World – through Mar. 12 – A fascinating group of icons and other religious objects drawn from Russian, Greek, Ethiopian and Coptic Orthodox traditions. A rich history of thematic developments and cultural variations is told through this exhibit curated by Professor William North specifically for Carleton’s Perlman Teaching Museum. Exhibited work comes from the private icon collection of Emmanuel and Argie Tiliakos (Winchester, MA) and Carleton’s Special Collections, offering visitors a unique opportunity to learn about Orthodox visual culture and devotion through objects seldom on view. An icon (from the Greek term for “image”) is a work of religious art — most commonly a painting of a holy figure or figures. Particularly associated with Orthodox Christian traditions, icons are regarded principally as religious rather than art objects and hold a special place in private and public devotions in the Orthodox worlds.

Musical Thrones: A Parody of Ice and Fire

Shakespeare’s classic play about the assassination of a deified political figure explores the boundaries between one’s politics and personality. This production, featuring movement interludes and live music, seeks to push these themes to new heights and highlight both the tragedy and the absurdity of the final days of the Roman Republic. Stoney End Music Loft, Red Wing The Freight Hoppers have been presenting old-time string band music for more than 20 years. The band started presenting their energetic take on fiddle band music four times a day, seven days a week at the Great Smoky Mountains Railway shortly after forming in 1992. Their repertoire includes music first recorded in the late 1920s and early 1930s from Mississippi to West Virginia. With a beautiful flair for harmony, Kaplansky was everyone’s favorite singing partner, but most often she found herself singing as a duo with Shawn Colvin. The New York Times said it was “easy to predict stardom for her.” Kaplansky continues to perform all over the world. The Contented Cow, Northfield A five-member blues/rock band out of Minneapolis formed in 2001 by Joni Weston and Eric Buffalohead, Bluedog has released several albums and singles which have been nominated for Best Blues Recording for the Native American Music Awards and the Indian Summer Music Awards. Their music is influenced by life experiences of Native people. Weston states that “Native people have experienced the blues, too. For us it reflects a significant part of life for Native people and our relationship with the U.S. government in the past, present and future. All the pain we’ve endured from massacres, boarding schools and forced removal from our homes, etc… all attempts to erase our culture and our people. We are still here. 1. Grading around your home. Performing preventive maintenance such as adding additional fill and mulch will help prevent water from seeping into the home and will establish positive drainage away from your foundation. Make sure downspouts are properly connected and that they drain away from the foundation.

Downsize How to Begin to

Moving to a different home is a challenge. It is especially challenging when we have been living in our home for many years with many memories. As a Realtor, I help my clients: 1. Visualize this move 2. Buy a home 3. Move 4. Get their home ready to sell 5. Sell their previous home Sometimes even in that order. Many of us have saved items from our earlier life, inherited family heirlooms, and are collectors. Those of us ready to retire are children of Depression-Era families and grew up saving everything in case we might need it someday. We also saved things for our children. Guess what? Most of our children do not want what we have saved. My own children are minimalists; value experiences above things; appreciate mobility; live a more casual life than we did or do. Few children or other heirs want our collections. Younger family members tend to be less sentimental about grandma’s china. Few younger people have the time or desire to polish furniture or silver. Use your cell phone and record your memories with photos. The less stuff, the freer the rest of your life will be. You will have enough money or more to live on when you are not paying as much for cleaning, utilities, insurance, redecorating, property taxes, etc. Try to decide the minimum furnishings you need to live in your next home. Plan for spacing between furnishings so you have plenty of room to move around. If you are comfortable getting a bridge loan, move before you put your home up for sale. It is easier to fill the new, often smaller home and then rent storage units for items you are not quite ready to part with. Climate-controlled storage spaces are available, but can be expensive. Consider having storage boxes shrink-wrapped and left in the garage or basement while your home is listed for sale.

Feng Shui by Mary Jo Winter

Feng Shui divides the world into five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. If you have a room that doesn’t feel quite right, try balancing the elements to make it more comfortable. Each element invokes a different mood, creating a customized space that’s beneficial for your personality and goals. The goal is to balance each detail or room with several elements so one element does not dominate the space. Once you get an understanding of the five elements, begin playing with their arrangement by starting small, with an entry table or a dresser in your bedroom. Add your red flowerpot of tulips and a few other items, such as a mirror for water and an arrangement of polished stones for metal.

To tackle an entire room, start by noticing and labeling all objects within a space. If you find yourself using a specific room less than others or avoiding it altogether, the elemental balance may need some adjusting. Be on the lookout for rooms made up of only one or two elements. By adding objects that represent those missing elements, you will be on your way to creating a balanced and inviting room. 1. Wood. Wood harnesses the power of creativity and expansion while representing traits such as growth, birth, strength, flexibility and intuition. Like the leaves and sky, wood’s colors are green and blue. Consider incorporating the following types of objects: fresh and silk flowers, plants and trees, cotton and other natural fabrics, wood furniture.

3. Earth. Earth affects physical strength and order while generating an overall feeling of grounding, balance and stability. To bring in the element, add anything in earth tones (brown, green or sand), square and rectangular shapes, low, flat surfaces or images of landscapes. 4. Metal. Metal affects mental clarity and logic. The presence of metal within a room can be felt in personal characteristics such as organization, focus, righteousness and analytical abilities. When enhancing a space with metal, add round or oval shapes, anything made of metals, including iron, aluminum, gold or silver, rocks and stones, white, gray, silver or light pastel colors. 5. Water. Water’s domain encompasses spirituality and the emotions. A balance of water brings about inspiration, wisdom and insightfulness. When incorporating the water element, add the color black or any deep, dark tones, reflective surfaces, such as mirrors and gazing balls, wavy, free-form or asymmetrical shapes, water or water features, such as aquariums and fountains. Honestly, the study of Feng Shui can be a lifetime of learning. When I tried just a few simple changes by adding a few “elements” to each room, I had guests ask me what I did to the room because it felt so nice. It was nothing major, just a few subtle changes in arrangements, pictures and furniture placement. Give it a try and spring forward! Smart Homes Homes of the Future, Today

As a Realtor, I’m in and out of many homes each week. I often see what people are using in regards to “smart home” and “wireless peripheral” devices. We are living in a golden age of smart-home product explosions and it can be a lot of fun. I started with a Philips Hue light bulb, which is an LED color-changing bulb controlled by a phone app. It can turn on when you enter a room or change color depending on the time of the day. I added them throughout my home and use different settings for when I entertain, watch a movie, or get up in the middle of the night to let the dog out. They use 1/10th of the electricity of a traditional bulb, but can be expensive, so I watch for sales on Amazon. I’ve added non-colored Philips bulbs to the exterior of my home. All the bulbs communicate with each other and work in unison with apps like Alexa or Google Home. Another product I added is an Eyedro electricity monitor, which plugs into my home wireless router and allows me to monitor how much energy my home is using at any time. It sends alerts and summaries. It’s more of a novelty, but it allows me to see the impact of lighting up my yard at Christmastime or running the vacuum with the appliances and the oven on a Saturday morning.

The funnest thing I’ve added is a ring.com video doorbell. This is essentially an HD camera with night vision that senses motion. The camera costs up to $250, but it can protect your family, provide entertainment and, with a $3 monthly subscription, record any events that happen at your front door. Even the UPS man waves and says “Hi, Tim” when he drops a package. I’ve added a spotlight security camera light in my backyard that allows me to watch the dogs play outside when I’m not at home. Cameras are everywhere now. They used to require professional setup and in-wall wiring and had a clunky user interface. Now, camera systems work effortlessly and operate hand-in-hand with a phone or computer. This is just the tip of the iceberg – there are also refrigerators that let you know how much or little is inside them, a dryer that pings your phone when it’s done and an “Instant Pot” cooker that can be turned on and off remotely with your phone. Fair warning: all of this is reliant upon a wireless router. We’ve all got a router at home, but can your router handle high-speed communications with 10 or 20 different things at the same time? Can it stream video to two cell phones and a smart TV while recording four cameras and monitoring your house power consumption? Mine couldn’t, so I had to upgrade. That’s the name of the game – upgrading and adjusting as we slowly but surely build a smart home that can handle the demands of the future. These features are becoming commonplace and are very attractive to a buyer. They are great attention-getters and unique amenities that buyers are interested in.
