Clean Home – Healthy Home

imbed the impurities further into the carpet and pad instead of lifting them out. Be sure to ask for green products, if you have a sensitive family. Enjoy the upcoming spring.

by Kari Ripley It’s almost time to get off the roller coaster – the roller coaster that is Minnesota winter weather. Spring is here and we all know what our homes need…spring cleaning!

The As Minnesotans, we are often cooped Entertainment , up for the whole winter, Guideand s the idea of cleaning and starting over with an (almost) brand new house can be exhilarating. When we think of the nose smudges and fingerprints that can be cleaned off BOTH sides of the windows, of the screens that can be cleaned and reinstalled and the rugs that can be shook and left to air out in the sun, it is easy to get excited for spring.

Real Estate Issue

Spring cleaning is something we should all do, but there are a few important items that may get overlooked as we open the windows and bask in the sun. Having a good dose of vitamin D after so many months is good for the mind, body and soul. Our homes require the same TLC to maintain their health.

Try to think of your home as a living organism that needs attention and care. The furnace could be the heart that needs to have new filters every three months, especially in the spring. The ductwork could be the lungs and should be checked and cleaned either once a year or in the springtime. Your carpet could be the kidneys of the house and should be cleaned every six months. Think of how many things get trapped in your living room carpet – pet dander, food from family movie night, pet accidents, mud, pollen, salt from the sidewalks, the list is endless. All of these impurities need to be removed from your carpet by a certified company that can provide a professional carpet cleaning. Cleaning the carpet has been proven to help clean the air of your home. By cleaning the carpet, you clear the carpet AND the air of unhealthy impurities and keep the lungs of your home cleaner and the heart of your home in better working order. Always make certain that you use a certified and professional carpet cleaning company, as improper cleaning can

Can you ever have too much garlic? Not if you grow your own. by Mary Jo Winter Once you grow and taste your home-grown Minnesota garlic, you will never shop for it again. Garlic growing is easy, easy, easy. Here are the top ten tips for growing great Minnesota garlic. 1. Purchase garlic in the fall from a local garlic grower. This is important. 2. Break the bulbs into cloves. One clove will grow into a bulb. 3. Plant in well-tilled garden soil mid to late fall before hard frost. 4. Plant each clove about 6-8 inches apart with root side down. Push into soil about 2 inches.

8. About mid to late July when the bottom leaves are turning brown it is time to dig your garlic bulbs up. Use a potato fork and dig under the bulb and gently lift out of the soil. 9. Take your beautiful garlic stalks /bulbs and hang to “cure” (dry down) for about three weeks in an area out of sunlight with some ventilation.

6. Look for the green garlic shoots in early spring.

10. When cured, cut off stalks and enjoy. These bulbs will keep several months if kept in cool dry area.

7. When plants are about 2-3 feet tall you will notice a green “scape” growing in the middle. Cut this off and it makes a wonderful grilled vegetable or garlic scape pesto [see recipe].

Be sure to keep some garlic for your next planting season. You will always have seed stock available this way. There are many kinds of garlic so plant a variety to taste the differences.

5. Cover with soil. When your row is complete, cover with about 6-8 inches of straw for the winter.

Google garlic growing in Minnesota for more information.

Garlic growing is easy, easy, easy.

Garlic Scape Pesto Recipe Ingredients: 1 cup (or less) freshly grated Parmesan cheese or other sharp Italian cheese 1–2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime or lemon juice, adjusted to taste

Watch out, garlic growing is addictive! Mary Jo Winter, Realtor with REMAX ADVANTAGE PLUS and owner of Sogn Valley Gardens can be reached at 612/701-2079 or mngarlic.com.

Variations include: Adding basil or cilantro or dill or any herb you like Add spinach or arugula in the mix . Use pine nuts, walnuts or pistachio nuts for added flavor Store in the refrigerator to use within two or three days, freeze for longer storage.

12–15 roughly chopped scapes or more 1/2 cup olive oil salt and pepper to taste Directions: Puree scapes, olive oil and juice in a blender or food processor until nearly smooth. (You can make a smooth paste if you prefer, but most people like a little texture in the pesto.) Gently stir in the cheese or gingerly pulse the cheese into the mixture; take it easy as you mix in the cheese to avoid making the pesto gummy by overlending. Taste and then adjust juice and salt to taste.

Making your Landscape Beautiful and Healthy by Leif Knecht When we plant trees in our landscapes we help ourselves and our community in so many ways. By planting trees we add beauty to the places we live; reduce heating and cooling costs for homes and businesses; clean pollutants out of the air, making us healthier; extend the life of the exterior finishes on our buildings; reduce stress by creating pleasant and relaxing outdoor spaces; provide greater privacy and protection from strong winds; help remove CO2 from the air, which should help slow the pace of global warming and climate change and increase genetic diversity in our ecosystem. That’s a pretty impressive list of benefits for an activity which many of us have found to be fun. No matter what your initial reason is for planting trees, you are likely to reap all of the many benefits which trees provide. Even before the dawn of recorded history, primitive people were drawn to trees for shelter, safety, food, fuel and building materials. I’m pretty sure that even thousands of years ago, people also regarded trees as beautiful. Today as human societies are changing with incredible speed, I think that planting a tree simply for its beauty is probably the most common reason for us to break out a shovel. Deep inside us, I believe that trees nurture our souls. The act of planting and caring for a tree brings forth deep feelings that we may not fully understand, but nevertheless provide a deep sense of satisfaction that many of us would recognize as spiritual enrichment. It’s a way to be part and parcel of, and in tune with, the whole width and depth of all creation.

Lastly, by planting many different varieties of trees, we can improve diversity in our ecosystem, which is a wise hedge against future environmental problems. Plant a few trees for fun, and enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that you are making a difference in so many ways. Leif Knecht is a Certified Nursery and Landscape Professional and owns Knecht’s Nursery in Northfield. He can be found at knechts.net or 507/645-5015.

In more practical terms, trees reduce the costs of air conditioning our houses and provide a pleasant spot of shade in which to enjoy a warm summer day. In the winter, trees can provide a wind break from frigid winter winds, which reduces heating costs. Wise placement of trees is important to obtaining these cost savings. When strategically placed shade trees keep spring, summer and fall sunlight from hitting the exterior surfaces of a building, the siding, paint finishes and even shingles last for a longer period of time which can be a huge cost savings over a period of several decades. Sunlight is far more destructive than most of us realize and often weathers buildings more than rain, sleet and snow. An added benefit of shade trees placed to the southeast, south and southwest of a building is that they not only offer shade in the warm seasons, but in the cold season the bare branches let low angle winter sunlight through the windows to warm the rooms, thereby reducing heating costs.

Many of us value privacy, and trees well placed can certainly provide that benefit, as well as scrubbing pollutants out of the air, making it healthier to breathe the air, which has become contaminated by a long list of modern conveniences such as cars, power plants, factories, etc. Trees absorb and store large amounts of CO2, a greenhouse gas that is rapidly increasing and likely to cause profound problems for human civilizations. It may not seem like a big impact when one person plants a few trees, but when billions of people each plant a few trees, it will make a huge difference. What each of us does actually makes a difference.

Redefining Luxury by Emily Schwamb Custard

What does a luxury home mean to you? Maybe large vaulted ceilings, intricate mouldings, sweeping staircases and too much space come to mind. I would like to propose a different take on luxury, redefined as a just-right-sized home with features and finishes that contribute to the feeling of comfort in your home, items that might not be necessary but could greatly improve the quality of life in your home. If you plan on staying in this home for a substantial amount of time, below is a list of the top ten features I believe are worth adding to your project. Think quality versus quantity. 1. Metal roof – Better than shingles in terms of product life, maintenance and snow removal. 2. High quality windows – and lots of them. Put your money where your view is and let the natural light flow. 3. Four-sided architectural features on exterior – Don’t stop with the front façade. Let the character of your home be visible no matter which side of the home you are looking at. 4. In-floor radiant heat – More efficient than baseboard and forced-air heat, radiant heat minimizes heat loss and reduces the spread of allergens. If radiant heat is not an option, consider zoning your forced air system for maximum control and possibly add an electric heat pad to your bathroom for almostinstant warmth. 5. Reverse Osmosis water system – Clean, tasty water and clear ice cubes; need I say more?

custom look without breaking the bank. And never let anyone convince you that hollow-core interior doors are ok. 9. Cabinetry – Maximize drawer storage and upgrade the drawer glides. Drawers are much more accessible and easier to use than a standard base unit or a base with slide-out trays. Drawers can easily be configured for storing almost any type of kitchen item and I guarantee that you will enjoy full-extension, under-mount, self-close drawer glides. 10. Separate range hood and microwave – While sometimes unavoidable in small spaces, having a separate range hood and microwave versus a micro-hood can not only improve the look of your kitchen but the function as well. Micro-hoods do not function as well as a dedicated hood, even when vented to the exterior. And micro-hoods are not at the most convenient location to use as a microwave – reaching over burners (and overhead if you are vertically challenged) can be dangerous. Other items to consider: tile niches in your shower surround, solar panels, a dedicated charging station for all of those electronics, thoughtfully placed recessed lighting, a sauna, and a screened-in porch. Talk to your architect, designer, or contractor about the feasibility of adding any of these items to your home and get ready to enjoy your new, luxurious home. Emily Schwamb Custard, Interior Designer at Schmidt Homes, can be found at schmidthomes.com or 507/663-0482.

6. Air Exchanger – New homes no longer breathe the way they used to. They now are almost air-tight, which is a good thing, but needs to be balanced by planning for air circulation in the home. An air exchanger allows fresh outside air to be conditioned and exchanged with stale interior air. It will improve your indoor air quality. 7. Fireplace or Fire Feature – Whether purely for ambiance or as a supplemental heat source, a fire feature can add warmth and coziness during those cold winter months. 8. Architectural trim package –To greatly improve the richness and character of your home, you do not have to go ornate –you can opt for a wider flat trim or a built-in back band for a more

Keep Pets Safe from Potentially Toxic Plants by Leah Erickson, CVT We are all looking forward to signs of spring: the grass getting green, the warming of the sun and the first signs of life in our emerging flowers. Many of us purchase or receive flowers for Easter such as lilies, tulips, daffodils, crocuses or hyacinths. All of these plants are beautiful to look at, but can be dangerous to dogs and cats. Stargazer and Easter lilies are extremely toxic to cats and have been known to cause severe kidney damage, leading to death. Tulips, daffodils, crocuses and hyacinths are toxic bulbous plants, with the bulb being the most toxic part of these plants. Before you bring in a beautiful plant make sure you have a safe space for the plant, away from your pets. As we get ready to head outdoors in the warmer weather, we need to remember our pets have a natural curiosity, especially when nature has been buried under a blanket of snow and everything is new to them once again. Dogs and cats tend to ingest the grass, chew on sticks or just dig in the dirt, so it’s good to remember that there are many pet dangers that we should watch for and avoid. Do you like to use compost as a fertilizer for your vegetable gardens? Dogs like it, too, but when organic matter decomposes it is common for molds to grow, potentially up to 20 different kinds, some of which produce mycotoxins that can have severe negative health effects. The fertilizers you use on your garden or yard can contain poisonous amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, iron, potas-

sium and zinc. Refer to the bag for warning labels, but keeping your pets out of the yard until the fertilizer or compost is absorbed into the ground is a good idea. Dogs and cats lick their paws, and if they have walked through fertilizer, they will ingest it. Toadstools and certain varieties of wild mushrooms are also quite prevalent during a wet spring and can make pets nauseous and in rare instances quite ill. Be aware of possible dangers for your four-legged friends in your vegetable gardens as well. Ingesting onions, garlic, leeks and chives can cause anemia and gastrointestinal upset. Tomatoes and potatoes are members of the nightshade family, which means foliage, vines, tubers and sprouts have some toxic effects on pets. Keeping your furry family members safe during spring and summer will make it an enjoyable time for all. If you have any questions about something your pet may have eaten, contact your local veterinarian; they will be glad to help. Leah Erickson is a Certified Veterinary Technician at Cannon Valley Veterinary Retail Store and can be reached at 507/650-7208 or cannonvalleyvet.com.

New Era of Landscape Design by Amy Voight With the increasing availability of technology the landscape design world has entered a new dimension with 3-D presentation programs. In a realm where “bird’s eye view” landscape designs reign, a whole new solution to “I can’t visualize” or “It’s hard for me to imagine what it will look like” has come.

of scale and feel of the desired design goals. A 3-D program can “walk” you around, and even through, a space a designer has laid out in accordance with that “bird’s eye view” landscape plan. Plants and hardscape elements can be incorporated into the presentation to give a whole overview of what it can be. With just a click of a button or two, texture or pattern changes can be made to give a new view with another material option.

CONSTRUCTION PLANNING AND INSTRUCTIONS

LANDSCAPE DESIGN BROUGHT TO LIFE

A landscape designer can now take a proposed landscape plan and give it digital life so that the client can get a really great picture of what their space can become. This process can be especially helpful for creation of outdoor rooms and entry spaces to provide a sense

Using this kind of 3-D presentation and design system provides opportunities to create construction diagrams that incorporate proper installation methods and details to be sure the end product relays the design goals intended. When a design is incorporated into the program correctly it will provide working installation plans that give multiple views for easier-to-follow instructions. Advice on Growing Clematis by Kathy Donahue Nass Clematis – what comes to mind when you hear the name? Is it a vision of the purple vine your grandmother had on her house? Maybe it’s a vision of an empty trellis that you have been trying to cover with clematis. While clematis are a little temperamental to get started, they are well worth the time expended to ensure spectacular blooms for years to come. The first task for your success is determining a location for your clematis. Most require five to six hours of sunlight. If your location has this much sun your selection process will be easier. If you have less than five hours of sunlight, your variety selection will be limited but do not be deterred, there are several varieties that grow well in the shade. Look for clematis, Abilene, Alaina, Bernadine, Candy Stripe, Fleuri, Nelly Moser or Silver Moon just to name a few. Selecting quality clematis requires going to a greenhouse/garden center that grows quality plants. Once there, there are a few things to look for. First, look for green, healthy foliage. While it’s wonderful to see a bloom, it’s more important to have a bushy green plant. Look for multiple stems shooting from the base of the plant. This will give you a fuller plant quicker. Look for varieties that fit your sun requirements and look for varieties that have long blooming times. Selecting two clematis that have different bloom times will extend the blooming on your trellis. Select a June bloomer and then a summer bloomer. Once you’ve made your selection, the real fun begins. Soil preparation is important as clematis like well-drained soil. Clematis also have very deep roots, so it’s best to dig a hole 18"x18" and fill in with mix of good black dirt, peat moss and compost. Now the most important instruction. If you follow just one instruction, this is the one! When planting your clematis, plant it deeper than it is in the pot. Covering up one or two sets of leaves will give the plant the start it needs. The reason for covering up the node is two fold. First, it allows the plant to shoot stems from the nodes that are underground, creating a bushier plant. Second, if the stem should ever break off at ground level or get chewed off by animals, the clematis will shoot up from under the ground and not be lost.

When planting, you do not need to remove the leaves – just cover them with soil. After planting, if possible wrap a piece of screen loosely around the plant for the first year to prevent animals from breaking or eating off the stem. The stake should be placed toward the trellis to train the plant to its permanent support. Water your clematis by soaking twice a week for the first few weeks until the plant is established. In years to come, always soak well once a week in dry weather. Feed once a month from April through September with a good water-soluble fertilizer. Clematis roots like to be cool. Plant annuals or perennials at the base of the climatis to shade the roots or use mulch at the base of the plant to keep roots cool. For the first year it is best to prune your clematis back to about 8-10" in the late autumn. In subsequent years follow pruning recommendations for your particular variety. This is the time to notate in your gardening notebook, I am going to plant one or two clematis this spring. Be creative and add some color on that mailbox, in a rose tower, in a crab tree, in a patio pot – anywhere you need some color. If planted correctly and cared for, clematis will give color year after year. Kathy Donahue Nass is a Clematis Specialist and one of the owners of Donahue’s Greenhouse. You can find more on clematis and other plants as well as information on Donahue’s Greenhouse at www.donahuesgreenhouse.com.

Wifi Dead Spots in Your House? by Chad Aldrich Do you have dead spots in your house? Do you have slow internet or a hard time streaming TV in certain areas of your house? Do you have a lot of devices trying to use the internet all at once? These are some of the common problems that homeowners have. The problem will likely get worse the more devices you have that require internet connectivity to work properly. With the new digital-age home, even the refrigerator can require internet, or your garage door opener, video doorbell, or thermostat and smoke detectors. You can even get smart water sensors to detect water leaks over wifi, which is great for when you go on vacation. So what is the best way to cover your entire house with wifi and have good speeds? That really depends on the house, but the latest great option is a mesh network. Mesh is different than just getting a wifi extender. Wifi extenders usually require a new network name (SSID) that you switch to in that low-signal area, where mesh would be just one name and signal across all areas. So you need to ask yourself, does your existing network work

well and just have one dead spot, or are you looking to replace your existing older network and cover a lot of space, including dead spots? In the latter case, mesh is the way to go, especially if you have lots of devices. With most mesh networks you can just keep adding more units until you completely cover all areas. There are so many options to choose from, which can be overwhelming. If you have any concerns or questions, it might be best to consult an expert. As for which mesh network you should choose, the Netgear Orbi has great coverage and probably the fastest network. Eero is another great option with easy setup and both have options to configure with apps for your iOS or Android device. As for wifi extenders, it really depends on your existing network and what extenders will work with it. Chad Aldrich is a Certified Apple Technician and networking expert with Aldrich Technology Consulting. He can be reached at 507/5815037 or aldrichtechmn.com.

The group’s popular laid-back roots rock draws on influences ranging from Neil Young, Gram Parsons and John Prine to The Eels and Tom Petty – lending its own unique brand of roots music that melds smart lyricism with pop-infused melodies. More at artvandalaytunes.wordpress.com. Concert for Caring: Under the Streetlamp • 8pm

Ames Center, Burnsville Complimentary appetizers, desserts, a silent auction and a raffle before the show at 6. Proceeds go to 31 non-profits. Featuring former leading cast members of hit Broadway musicals including Jersey Boys, this concert celebrates classic hits of the American radio songbook from the 1950s to the 1970s. From tight harmonies to slick dance moves, the audience is taken back to an era of sharkskin suits, flashy cars and martini shakers. Classic hits are reborn in this evening of great music, hilarious behind-the-scenes tales, and a seven-piece band that includes Michael Ingersoll, Christopher Kale Jones, Brandon Wardell and Shonn Wiley. Between them, they have appeared on Broadway, in feature films and on television – including special appearances during the New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square, on The Tonight Show, The Primetime Emmy Awards, The Tony Awards and The Oprah Winfrey Show. Tickets:$35-45, available at the Ames Center Box Office, 800/9822787 or ticketmaster.com. The Blacksmith’s Daughters • 9-11pm

The Contented Cow, Northfield Music for the soul. Formed in 2015 in Minneapolis, this sister folk/pop band delivers music with a message. Soaring melodies, intense harmonies and intertwined guitar and ukulele progress the storyline in every song. Like the elements themselves, each song they smith is unique. The Blacksmith’s Daughters use a variety of instruments and change up the musicians to create their individual sound. The four pillars of the band are sisters Annella Platta and Julida Kochanowski and their iron-clad musicians, Brent Platta and Sean Alter. More at theblacksmithsdaughters.com. DJ • 9pm-1am

Poets to celebrate Poetry Month with reading at Content by Felicia Crosby Riki Kölbl Nelson and Karen Herseth Wee invite you to a reading at Content books for National Poetry Month, and as part of Content’s monthly poetry series. Longtime friends, longtime poets, and founding members of Penchant poetry collective, they understand the reluctance many people feel when it comes to experiencing poetry. “It’s telling your inner life in a very public forum,” Karen explains, but like visual art, she says, the poet sees things in a certain way and then shows it.

group has proven an important touchstone for its members, and has published several books. Riki and Karen have published books individually as well, and say their connection to Penchant provides regular inspiration and encouragement. For poetry readings, both Riki and Karen feel there are certain challenges to overcome, but the experience that’s created, for poet and listener alike, is magical. It’s partly about intimacy, Karen says. “Most people aren’t comfortable with that. Poetry,” though, “speaks to a something immediate and visceral, like being in a good conversation.” “I choose poems that communicate well,” says Riki. “They entertain, but they mix deeper elements with the fun.” And of the April 13 reading at Content, she adds, “It’s in the back of the shop, in a very cozy space.”

“If you’re willing to be open, as a poet,” Riki adds, “you reach people.” But she acknowledges that the experience can be intimidating for the new listener. “Poetry is hard to hear and process right away. People tend to think poetry’s work.” Riki and Karen both came to Northfield years ago as young faculty spouses, but both were already poets, Riki having begun as a teen in her native Austria, and Karen on her family’s ranch in South Dakota. Both began writing as a way of creating private – and safe – spaces; for girls finding their voices during the early years of feminism, poetry allowed a release that open conversations often couldn’t. Meeting as adults, they quickly realized the need for a women’s writing group, and founded Northfield Women’s Poets, which later became Penchant. Forty years on, the
