Failure and Virtuosity: Contemporary Queer Video – through Apr. 27 – Highlights work of queer video makers in the generations following pioneer filmmaker Jack Smith’s revolutionary incursions into visual culture. They share with Smith a belief in the utopian potential of queer aesthetics to remain separate from the strictures of heteronormative society. In some cases, this means forwarding a sense of queer community that offers a distinct and realizable alternative to what we have come to see as family. In others, queer artists have mined the formal means of video as a medium to divert this mass media format towards other ends. In short, these artists all fail to live up to sociocultural expectations of how they should act, but they fail with absolute virtuosity.

Paradise Center for the Arts Healing Arts Gallery This collaboration between the Paradise Center for the Arts and District One Hospital features art in a variety of two-dimensional mediums and styles that promote healing and well-being. All levels of artists are encouraged to submit their work for consideration. The summer exhibit will run May 9-Sept. 12. Deadline for submissions is Apr. 16. There are five separate galleries that feature from 1 to 19 pieces. 100 percent of proceeds from a sale go to the artist. Artwork must be 8x10 inches or larger and be ready to hang (with a wire). A Streetcar Named Desire

A tragic and whimsical drama set in 1948 New Orleans French Quarters. When Blanche DuBois loses her ancestral home in Laurel, Mississippi, she is forced to live with her younger sister and Stanley, her sister’s rough and abusive husband. As Blanche attempts to negotiate the unstable power dynamics in Stanley’s house, she Kelsey Theater| also struggles with the trauma of losing her young husband some years earlier. When Blanche’s past is revealed, she slips deeper into psychosis as Stanley closes in. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1948, A Streetcar Named Desire is considered by most dramatic literary scholars to be a foundational text that contributed to the emergence of Post WWII modern American Theater. This show deals with sexual themes and adult situations ranging from abuse to overt sexual tones. Not recommended for ages under 14. Women March on Washington

Apr. 14, 7:30pm and Apr. 15, 2pm Northfield Arts Guild Theater A full-length stage play based on the women’s marches on Washington of 1913, 1978 and 2017, using historical and fictional characters. Bags packed, they head out across the country (and over decades) to the nation’s center of power. What will they bring? White gloves and a Bible? Heavy boots and the Pill? A pink hat? A hijab? The diverse travelers encounter suffragist Alice Paul, early civil rights leader Ida Wells-Barnett, 1970’s ERA proponents (and opponents) and women of today. Battling enormous obstacles, including their own doubts and disagreements, all arrive in Washington together, asking: “Whose march is it?” and “What are the stakes?” Women March on Washington is a new play in development and will be presented script-in-hand. The rehearsal and reading of the script are invaluable parts in the process of the script revision and development. In the depths of the Depression, Godfrey, a “forgotten man,” is rescued from his packing-crate home by ditzy socialite Irene Bullock during the course of a scavenger hunt. Irene offers Godfrey a job as butler to the banking family of Bullocks. Godfrey tolerates their eccentricities, alcoholism and general nuttiness. Irene and Molly, the pert Irish maid, both fall in love with Godfrey, but for Irene it’s serious – and she’s determined to get her man. Falsely accused by Cornelia of stealing the famous Bullock Pearls, Godfrey uses the opportunity to recover his personal finances and, when the Bullocks end up going broke, rescues them by getting them all (gasp!) jobs in The Dump, a new nightclub Godfrey has built to provide work for his friends and for the Bullocks, too. Imminent Brewing, Northfield Conceived in Minneapolis in 1976, Nip ‘n’ Tuck consisted of Gary Rue (guitar/vocal), Jeff Willkomm (bass/vocal) and Tilly (drums/ vocal). The group was heavily influenced by pop idols of the time (Todd Rundgren, The Raspberries, Steely Dan, Edgar Winter) and termed a “melodic rock band” by the local press (with which the band agreed). Their desire is to deliver music that is, by degrees, music for the sake of music.

Northfield Public Library Local poet and musician Andrea Een will present a program of original poetry and Norwegian folk music. Een will play on the Hardanger fiddle and read her poetry. Stoney End Music Loft, Red Wing A prolific artist in the contemporary singer/songwriter arena, Tret Fure has released 15 albums and CDs over the course of her 48-year career. In addition to being a gifted songwriter, Fure has engineered and produced countless recordings by a variety of artists, including her own work. Kracum Performance Hall, Carleton, Northfield The Singers present Joby Talbot’s thrilling choral symphony Path of Miracles led by Assistant Conductor Matthew Olson. This rarely heard 21st century masterwork is written for 17 voice parts, and dramatically tells the history of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in Northern Spain. Tavern Lounge, Northfield Sing Out Magazine says Dan Rumsey would have felt right at home in the 1960’s folk-blues scene. He plays 6- and 12-string guitar, resophonic slide guitar and piano, singing in a soulful, bluesy style, writing songs with themes of peace, equality, family and, occasionally, cats. Cannon River Winery, Cannon Falls Singer and pianist Andrew Walesch is a new and exciting voice on the national jazz scene. Whether recording jingles, producing shows, composing and arranging, or singing as a solo artist and with big bands, Walesch is known for his unique approach to The Great American Songbook. He has sung and played on the stage of The Bluebird Café in Nashville and the legendary Chicago Theater and has appeared on the nationally syndicated broadcast Mountain Stage on NPR. Other works to be performed are by Pulitzer Prize-winning composers Karel Husa (Music for Prague 1968) and Joseph Schwantner (New Morning for the World: Daybreak of Freedom). Schwantner’s work features narration by theater major Christine Menge, with excerpts from speeches by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who was assassinated in 1968. Rice County Historical Society, Faribault Bandolier bags, or gashkibidaaganag – the large, heavily beaded shoulder bags made and worn by several North American Indian tribes around the Great Lakes – are prized cultural icons here and around the world. From the 1870s to present day, Ojibwe bead artists of Minnesota have been especially well-known for their lively, creative designs. Neighboring Dakota people would trade a pony for a beautiful beaded bag. Over the years the bags have been bought up by non-Indian collectors and ethnographers, struck by the bags’ cultural significance and visual appeal. Are microbes GROWING in your walls?

It may start as an odor, maybe a stain that you hadn’t noticed before, but before long you realize that there is definitely a moisture problem causing issues in your home. Many times, the issue arises from water traveling to places it shouldn’t: a leaky pipe under the second story tub causing water stains on the main level ceiling below; a tub or sink overflow in another apartment unit that wasn’t dried properly and is now causing issues in a shared wall; a sump pump failure from last spring that you thought you took care of, but now see signs of microbial growth on the walls. While there are certain types of mold spores commonly occurring in both air and on surfaces of any normal living space, an overabundance or the presence of certain kinds are the cause of health concerns, especially to the elderly, very young or health-compromised. For this reason, it cannot be stressed enough how important it is to make sure any water losses or moisture issues are dealt with immediately and professionally. When choosing a professional, make certain the company is certified with the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification) and has the

proper moisture meters to detect water trapped in ceilings, in between walls or under floors. Even though a wall, floor or ceiling may look dry and feel dry to the touch, the danger of allowing moisture to stay trapped behind these surfaces without air flow is costly and detrimental to one’s health. Without determining the source of the elevated moisture, stopping the source and drying out the affected areas, microbial growth is certain. Also, most insurance companies will cover the expense to dry down and repair a home after a water loss while many DO NOT cover mold remediation services. Even though it may seem like a headache dealing with home water issues now, it is far more stressful and costly to deal with mold concerns later. An ounce of prevention. It is also a good idea to regularly check your roof for ice dams in the winter and your basement for any encroaching water during the spring. When plants are thoughtfully chosen and planted, management becomes less stressful because the focus can be on the whole garden instead of individual plants. This concept of plant communities instead of individual elements creates sustainable gardens that use less water, are visually stimulating and require less maintenance overall once established. The use of “green mulch,” which refers to groundcover plants, shades the soil and aids in preventing weeds and loss of water due to evaporation. Some of the great plants that fit the groundcover category are: low sedge grass such as Pennsylvania Sedge, strawberries, self-seeding columbines, woodland poppies and prairie dropseed grass. Your garden can reflect your personality just like your profile and/or picture on your social network site does. Color choices, accent pieces, leaf shapes and more can all play a role in representing your creative self (or, with the help of a landscape designer, the creative person you are deep down).

Plants have grown in their communities since the beginning of time and do many things in support of each other. Think of prairies and how grasses and wildflowers combine to create expanses of “groundcover” in the heat of full sun and blowing wind. Prairies usually fade into woodland edges (often called savannahs) and different set of plants are present with the introduction of shade. Woodlands then rely on a high tree canopy that creates shade almost the entire day to the understory trees and shrubs, ferns, wildflowers and sedges at the forest floor. These inspirations in nature can be applied to our own urban plantings that surround our homes and businesses and through creative design and educated choices will be beautiful and sustainable. As you think about your landscape and gardens this year, find out how your current plants (or desired new

Autumn Gold Ginkgo Distinguished by a lovely symmetrical and strong herringbone branch structure that offers great beauty even in winter. Able to grow well, even in very difficult soils. Brilliant gold fall color. A seedless variety that matures gradually to 50' tall and 30'-40' wide.

Yellowwood A medium-sized ornamental tree that produces showy and very fragrant white flowers in large clusters each spring. Able to tolerate alkaline clay soils. At 25' tall x 25' wide, Yellowwood is a good fit for most urban lots. Avoid gravely/sandy soils. Full sun preferred. Ancestry Oak A versatile and fairly fast-growing hybrid of our native Bur Oak, English Oak and other oaks. A good way to add diversity as we face the challenge of Bur Oak Blight attacking our mature trees. Will become a full-sized shade tree of 45' tall x 40' wide. Grows vigorously in all soils except wet areas. True North Kentucky Coffeetree This new northern hardy strain is seedless, can grow on a wide variety of soil types, and will grow to become a stately shade tree of 50' tall x 40' wide. This tree is not the source of our morning brew, but is a tough and lovely seedless shade tree.

Ice Dragon Korean Maple An incredibly beautiful small tree with the most finely textured cutleaf foliage I have ever seen. A stunning landscape specimen. Sure to be the star of any garden. Plant in part sun/part shade, and properly drained soil. Gradually matures to 8' tall by 15' wide. Hardy enough for our Zone 4 climate.

Minnesota Strain Redbud My favorite flowering tree. This strain, selected by the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, has proven hardy enough for southern Minnesota and explodes in early spring with hundreds of bright magenta/purple blossoms that are 100 percent visible because they come long before any leaves. When should i sell my home? By Brian Trebelhorn, Realtor Re/Max Advantage Plus ...A common question that is asked of Realtors, a good question, and one with a variety of answers. There are a few factors that determine a good time to sell your home but, ultimately, the best time is whenever it’s best for you, as circumstances outside the real estate world dictate – an addition to the family, more space needed, a job relocation, a change in marital status, etc. For those that are always ready and get anxious after living in the same home for a period of time (yes, there are plenty of homeowners who move simply because they’re bored), there are better times to sell than others. it warms up, people want to play in the sun, so it slows down again. Weather is a surprisingly big factor when it comes to people searching for homes. For diehard home buyers, weather will not slow them down but, for most buyers, it is a big factor. After Memorial Day, we enter the summer months. The summer months are always pretty active, but somewhat surprisingly (at first glance) July is actually the slowest month of the year, historically and statistically. If you think about it, it does make sense, though. July the only month of the year where there is no school or school activities for the entire month. In June we have the end of the school year and graduation and, in August, we have the back-to-school sports practices and other activities prepping for the new school year. That makes July the month that many people go on vacation. When we enter the fall and winter months, you can plan with almost absolute certainty a big slowdown at the end of August and into mid-September, for all the back-to-school activities and, of course, the last hurrah of the summer, Labor Day weekend! Once the dust settles from all that, there is almost always a resurge of sorts that sparks people to become active again. The kids are back in school and the family routine gets restored. Here again, the weather can play a role, but it is common for some people to want to get into a home before the hustle and bustle of the holiday season starts, as well as trying to beat the snow. Because of that, like clockwork, you can plan on a pretty significant surge around mid-September until Thanksgiving.

Although December is not the slowest time of year, it is certainly a close second to July. There are still buyers out there wanting to get into a home before the New Year, for tax purposes, but other than that, it’s a pretty inactive time for the real estate market. Of course, market saturation also plays a huge role if you’re trying to time the selling of your home. Right now, inventories are very low, so well-priced homes that come on the market are not only selling fast, but getting full price and multiple offers. There’s probably never been a better time to sell than right now. It’s good old-fashioned economics – the law of supply and demand – the demand is there, the supply is not. If you’ve ever considered selling your home but were waiting for the “best” time to sell, now might be that time. All that being said, and considering that a nice home, well-priced will almost certainly sell at any time, one may still conclude that the best time of year to sell, remains…when you’re ready. More and more of us have data to share with other family members or even outside of the home to friends and family over the internet. Sure, you could use Google or Apple to host some of these files or pictures to share, but what if it is a large amount of files or a large video file? These type of hosts often have file size limits. One solution would be a NAS (Network Attached Storage) device. A NAS device allows you to store virtually unlimited data and be able to share it over the internet to friends and family. It is like having your own personal cloud right in your home. Store your entire collection of vacation photos on a NAS and share the whole album with anybody you want. Simply send them a link to the shared files and they can log in from wherever they are to view your photos and videos.

Other uses for a NAS include storing movies, home videos and photos and playing them to your favorite smart TV or media player. Some NAS devices even allow you to

connect a network camera for surveillance, which can record video right to the NAS, and give you the ability to watch live feed or recordings of those videos from anywhere, including your mobile phone. It can also work as your own personal Dropbox, syncing files from one computer to another within a set folder. Another use would be to store your entire music collection, which can be shared to multiple computers.

Most NAS devices have multiple hard drives for redundancy so the data is mirrored on more than one drive. That way if one drive fails you can continue to use the device until you replace the bad drive with a new one. There is even an option to backup your data to a cloud solution for off-site backup, which ensures that your precious family memories are not lost. Northfield Arts Guild Theater A folk singer and songwriter from North Dakota who comes from a working family with a musical background, though none have received formal training. His grandmother Lillian Uglem taught him acoustic guitar while he was in grade school. He has toured abroad, performed in bars, backyards, grand halls, subways, theaters and old folks homes and exchanged songs and poetry with many talented folks including Susan Orlean, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Patrick Marber, Bonnie Raitt and the late Sim Hinton. Mayor Mike Brown presented Brosseau the Key to the City of Grand Forks in 2007 for his album of original work titled Grand Forks. Natalie Portman chose a song from the album as part of her continuing work with FINCA, an organization whose mission is to assist communities of impoverishment. Today, at 30 acres, they farm more grapes than any other Minnesota farm winery operation. The vineyard is located in Southwest Minnesota at an elevation of 1620 feet, putting them on top the Buffalo Ridge where glaciers have given rich ground and strong winds, both important factors for growing quality grapes in Minnesota. Owatonna Arts Center The Thursday Musical Group is a 100-year-old organization showcasing professional Minnesota musicians. This performance will feature two very accomplished artists from this group, cellist Lindsay Schlemmer and pianist Salam Murtada. Schlemmer is the principal cellist of the Southeastern Minnesota Orchestra and the University of Minnesota Symphony. She has a master’s degree from the University of Minnesota and a bachelor’s degree from Illinois Wesleyan University. Salam Murtada is a pianist and civil and environmental engineer originally from Amman, Jordan, and currently working for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. He was a semifinalist in the Fourth Van Cliburn International Competition for Outstanding Amateurs in 2004, a semifinalist in the Washington International Piano Competition in 2006 and a prize winner in the Greensboro Music Academy National Piano Competition in 2000.
