Young Frankenstein Musical Theatre Apr. 5-7, 12-14, F/Sa 7pm, Su 2pm Olde Pine Theatre, Pine Island

The electrifying adaptation of Mel Brooks’ monstrously funny film will leave you in stitches. Produced by Pine Area People for the Arts (PAPA) and sponsored by Zumbrota Ford. Grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein, Frederick Frankenstein (pronounced “Fronk-en-steen”) inherits his family’s estate in Transylvania. With the help of a hunchbacked sidekick, Igor (pronounced “Eye-gore”), and a leggy lab assistant, Inga (pronounced normally), Frederick finds himself in the mad scientist shoes of his ancestors. “It’s alive!” he exclaims as he brings to life a creature to rival his grandfather’s. Eventually, of course, the monster escapes and hilarity abounds. Tickets: $13 advance, $15 at the door, available through the box office at 507/491-2639 or online at oldepinetheatre.com. Steel Magnolias

Apr. 5-7, 12-14, F/Sa 7:30pm, Su 2pm Lakeville Area Arts Center

The action is set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser (“I’m not crazy, I’ve just been in a bad mood for 40 years”), an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth and the local social leader, M’Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in town), is about to marry a “good ole boy.” A sudden realization of their mortality draws on the underlying strength – and love – which give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad. Tickets: $13, available at 952/985-4640 or lakevilleareaartscenter.com.

ESSENTIAL OILS

What are they, really? Have you ever wondered what a plant does when it gets an infection? If you’re like most people, this is not something you’ve thought much about. But plants are organisms with cells much like ours. They have DNA in the nucleus, mitochondria that use sugar to power their metabolism, and they have to deal with threats from viruses, bacteria and fungi. They are also out in the sun all day, meaning they have to repair damage to their DNA from UV radiation. So plants have become exceptional chemists. They produce compounds that repair cells, act as communication between cells, attract and repel animals, defend against microorganisms and perform other functions for the health of the plant. Many

of these compounds have effects on us, too, when we use them as food, teas or essential oils. Modern chemistry has reproduced some of these compounds, which are used in the food and drug industries as flavorings and as the basis for most drugs. But even though many individual plant chemicals can be synthesized, they must be modified in order to be patented. Whole plants and natural plant extracts are more complex, often containing hundreds of compounds that interact with each other, as well as with our bodies when we use them. We consume all of these plant chemicals when we eat our vegetables. If we pour hot water over tea leaves or herbs, we extract the compounds that are water-soluble in the tea. The smaller, volatile

molecules evaporate into the air, and we experience many of them as aromas. These are “essential oils,” which is the name for the volatile, oil-soluble molecules that plants make to communicate through the air. Good quality essential oils have many benefits, affecting mood, digestion, skin healing, immunity and multiple body systems. We Are The Willows craft dynamic, intimate songs with instruments and voices combining to create energetic rhythms and intricate melodies. Their heartfelt arrangements evoke shared nostalgic feelings of love and loss. In November of 2014 the band released Picture (Portrait) Pt. 1 based off of 350 letters written by Miller’s grandfather to his grandmother while he was stationed in the Southwest Pacific during World War II. Their correspondence inspired Miller to explore themes of family, separation, life, death and identity in a time of national and personal crisis. The songs communicate complex ideas delivered with pop-sensible charm. Drawing from these letters, the band explores concepts of storytelling, history and family through workshops as well. Thinking About Building or Renovating? Consider a construction-to-permanent loan.

By Peggy Hoffman

• A copy of the floor plan and facade of the house, if applicable • A deed to the lot, if applicable

If you are thinking about building or renovating your own home in 2019, you may want to consider a construction-to-permanent loan. You can combine your lot and construction financing into a single loan. Your construction financing simply converts to a permanent mortgage when your home is complete. During construction, you only pay the interest on your loan. And with one upfront closing and one set of closing costs, you’ll save time and money. Here are the steps to take to complete the process: 1. Determine if your property is eligible. One of the qualifications of a construction-to-permanent loan is that your new home must be an owner-occupied primary residence or a second home. The property type must be a one-unit, single-family detached home. The bank will also require that you use a licensed builder to construct your home. 2. Get started on your loan process. When you are ready to begin the mortgage process, contact the bank. The process is not much different than a standard home loan. In addition to the usual required financial information, you’ll also need to provide: • A copy of the construction agreement with your builder, which must specify the cost of your home including options, upgrades and lot value, if the lot is being purchased from the builder • A land contract for the lot on which your house will be built, if applicable

April 2019

3. Close on your loan. After your loan is approved, the bank will draft a loan commitment detailing the legal issues and requirements for your loan. You’ll receive this document at closing, but will also be given a sample document to review in advance. At closing, you’ll need enough cash to cover the closing costs and the minimum down payment. 4. Begin drawing on your loan. You’ll pay the balance of the down payment at your construction closing. Funds are released from the construction loan based upon inspections of the completed work in progress. Peggy Hoffman, Vice President – Mortgage Loans at Community Resource Bank can be reached at 507/645-3111 or visit community-resourcebank.com for more info.

A DELIGHTFUL AND SUSTAINABLE

Landscap e by Amy Voight

Here are some elements to consider when creating sustainable outdoor solutions: SHELTER: Trees are a main supplier of shelter – from the wood products they provide once harvested, to the branches and leaf space critters hide behind and nest in, to protection from sun and wind. POLLINATION: Bees, butterflies and even birds accomplish this all-important task that is crucial to production of food and plant life cycle. FOOD AND MEDICINAL PRODUCTION: Plants providing health for our bodies through fruit, nut, seed, leaves and roots. Not very many generations ago people lived off their own land and were self-sufficient. MENTAL REFRESHING: In our busy, hectic and technologically-driven lives there comes a point when we must “unplug” and recharge our souls with the simple beauty that nature provides. When we slow down and examine the living things around us it has a therapeutic effect. REGENERATING THE SOIL: Inappropriate and wasteful building practices can change landscapes from their organic state through relocation or compaction. These changes can leave behind caustic and very poor growing conditions for plants. Proper planning with soil enhancements, appropriate plants and the process of time can regenerate the land that has gone through a major change. “Waste” shed by plants – or unused portions when combined appropriately and given time – decompose and trigger another important cycle in the eco-system, which will also aides regeneration.

ELEMENTAL BALANCE: Pure air to breath. The all-important task of converting carbon monoxide to oxygen to sustain all life on this earth relies on the world’s vegetation. POLLUTION FILTER AND WATER CYCLE: The proper collection and disbursement of water, so that it regenerates aquafers and visible bodies of water such as lakes and rivers, should be a consideration in landscape planning. Managing water on your own site with a rain garden is both beautiful and environmentally friendly. EXERCISE: Low maintenance does not mean no maintenance. Get out and move! A little sun and work will regenerate your spirit and invigorate your body. When you know how to take care of the landscape, you have and make it a lifestyle to balance the care of it with your priorities, then it won’t become a burden. Start now! Try things, adjust your priorities, make new habits, change your lifestyle and educate yourself in the wonderful world of nature. with a spring cleaning

Get Ready to by Ann Dybvik Winter snow is melting, which means gardening season is almost here. While it may seem too early to do much outside work yet, there are many small indoor tasks that should be done ahead of any planting. The first is to take stock of your current garden tools, making sure all are clean and in good working order. Tools are important to gardening and a few carefully-selected tools make tasks easier and more enjoyable. If you did not do so in the fall, clean tools of any old dirt in order to prevent the spread of possible plant diseases and to preserve the life of your tools.

Spring is finally starting to show as snow piles melt and wet, soggy earth begins to return. The new season offers new energy and hope to us hearty Minnesotans who have hung on through a winter full of trials. We are ready to put away our wool blankets and socks, open our windows for some fresh air and get out to soak in some of the sun’s warmth. We get motivated to spring clean or maybe even “spring clear!” It’s a time to freshen up and dust off. But all of this could be overwhelming if your spaces feel full. Full of stuff that piled up in the storage room over the winter. Full of kid gear, supplies or artwork. Full of boots and shoes in the mudroom. Full of your parents’ boxes that came in when you cleared out their house. Your fresh spring energy could get bogged down if you spin in circles wondering where to start and how you might get anything done to make a difference. Your inner voice might be talking you out of starting by saying things like...

Sharpen cutting tools and shovels with a whetstone. During the gardening season, keep tools clean by immersing them in a bucket filled with sand and new motor oil. After use, insert tools into the mix to clean and keep free from rust. Rub wooden handles with linseed oil to preserve their lifespan. Buy and treat tools wisely and they last for years. Make sure your empty pots and containers are also clean and dry. Diseases can linger in old soil left in pots from the previous year. April is a great time to look through gardening books or attend gardening workshops. Master Gardener groups around the state host workshops in the spring and all are designed to share gardening knowledge and ideas. The continued on page 33

Creating landscapes that give back!

“You’ll never find the time to get this done.” “You’re crazy to want to tackle this now.” “This project is too big, don’t even start.” That kind of thinking can feel heavy and defeating. But remember, you want to start this season off with more light and ease! So instead of looking at your project as a whole, take a minute to look at it with fresh eyes. First, zoom in to find small categories or one specific area that could be worked continued on page 33

Tornado Tree Damage: Shock, Hope, Recovery Hundreds of Southeast Minnesota families lost cherished trees in the outbreak of more than 20 tornadoes that tore through the area last fall. Losses ranged from a tree or two on some properties to 500 or more mature trees on other properties. Regardless of how many trees you lost, the impact was shocking. We love our trees. They provide cooling shade and protection from nasty winds, and they add beauty to our lives. Trees provide shelter and food for the wildlife we enjoy watching. Over time, trees become friends we can count on. When they are unexpectedly destroyed in a minute or two by a tornado, the result for most of us is shock. How could this devastation have happened so fast? Why did WE have to be the victims? This was supposed to happen to someone else. How can we ever recover from our beautiful property being turned into such a huge and horrendous mess? When I walked out my front door a few minutes after the storm passed, I too, was in complete shock. It felt as if nothing could ever be right again. For two days, kind people helped us clear the trees off our driveway, and worked with me on chainsawing trees that fell around our three buildings. The support and love extended was amazing

By Leif Knecht

and wonderful, but I was still in shock. I had lost my incredibly beautiful woods. On the third day after the tornado, I began to realize that not all was doom and gloom. We still have about half of the hard maple, oak, basswood, elm, hickory and ironwood trees left in pretty good shape. It began to dawn on me that in five or six years and with a lot of hard work, we could have brand new woods with a nice mix of the remaining mature trees, new trees that we will be planting and new trees that Mother Nature will also plant for us. Hope emerged, followed by a fierce determination to rise above the devastation and, in time, achieve a recovery that will yield deep satisfaction. Once I made this change of mind I felt so much better. Yes, my woods are still mostly a colossal mess. But we have made progress. A few acres have been cleaned up, and are ready for replanting in early May. That will be a huge step forward. Already tree seeds that were produced before the storm are waiting to sprout and complement trees we plant. We will be working in tandem with Mother Nature. From about May 15 to early August, we will continue working to prepare another few acres for a mid-August planting. The work of cleaning up a few acres at a time and immediately replanting is likely to continue for two or three years, planting each May and August. About five years from now, Deb and I expect to have our brand new woods looking great, with a nice mix of mature and young trees. Whether you lost a few trees, or dozens, or hundreds, you, too, can have a brand new batch of trees that will yield a lifetime of satisfaction. If you would like an evaluation of your tree damage, and assistance charting a path forward, I am offering a FREE consultation to tornado victims. Just call me at the nursery – 507/645-5015 or send me an e-mail at leif@knechts.net and we can schedule a visit to your property to begin following a path of hope to recovery. Leif Knecht, owner at Knecht’s Nurseries & Landscaping, can be reached at 507/645-5015 or leif@knechts.net.

Get Ready to Garden ...continued from page 31 state Horticulture Society is another resource for plant and gardening knowledge, as are local home and garden shows. Public libraries often host presentations by experienced gardeners, nursery staff, and others with gardening experience and these are typically free to the public. These presentations can help those new to gardening as well as anyone looking to expand their knowledge. Finally, think about your gardening goals. What would you like to grow this year and why? If you are new to the craft, consider narrowing your vision. Gardening can be just as effective in pots around a patio as in a large tilled space in the back yard. Think about what you would enjoy growing and eating if you start with food, or which flowers and shrubs might add beauty to your yard. Two resources for further information about workshops, plants, and gardening in general are the U of M Extension program at extension.umn.edu/volunteer#master-gardener or the Minnesota State Horticultural Society at northerngardener.org. Living in a Smart Home

Whether you are hoping to set up something as basic as a smart speaker in your living room or create a network of connected devices, these smart home products can help you get started.

A smart home is one that provides its home owners comfort, security, energy efficiency and convenience at all times regardless of whether anyone is home. “Smart home” is the term commonly used to define a residence that has appliances, lighting, heating, air conditioning, TVs, computers, entertainment audio and video systems, security and camera systems that are capable of communicating with one another and can be controlled re-

Now in its second generation, the Amazon Echo remains at the top of every list of the best smart home devices. For those who have never heard of it, it’s basically a Bluetooth speaker that can also listen to voice commands via Amazon’s popular voice assistant, Alexa. A common step that is taken after purchasing a smart speaker is getting smart lights for the house, and the Philips Hue ecosystem is your best bet. It works seamlessly with Alexa, IFTTT, and even Siri, which you can command to control not only the intensity of lights in every part of the house, but also the color.

Mesh-networking kits use multiple access points spread around your house to improve the range and performance of your Wi-Fi. Thanks to a dedicated high-bandwidth Wi-Fi connection between the router and the satellite, the Orbi RBK50 kit had among the best throughput and range of the kits tested. The simple “put the router where the internet is, put the satellite in the middle of your house” instructions are impossible to screw up, but for the tech-savvy, it is among the very few mesh kits that provide high-end router features, plus it lets you control your local network without an active internet connection. Popovich Comedy Pet Theater has been voted “Best family show in Las Vegas” and was a finalist on America’s Got Talent. Comedy Pet Theater features an amazing cast of house cats, dogs, parrots…even geese and mice. Critics describe it as a unique blend of comedy, world-champion juggling and the extraordinary talents of more than 30 performing pets. Popovich has rescued the animals from shelters all over the country and transformed them into Las Vegas stars, using positive reinforcement and working with the animals’ natural abilities to create a fun, one-of-a kind show. Popovich, a Russian native and former star of the Moscow Circus, has won circus competitions, awards and recognition for his juggling and balancing abilities and is a world record holder. He shares his expertise for raising, training and living harmoniously with pets in two books – You CAN Train Your Cat and Doggy Gone Good. Tickets: $10-$22, available at sheldontheatre.org. Julyda • 8-11pm

Tanzenwald Brewing, Northfield

A Minneapolis-based pop-rock band featuring Julida Alter on voice and cello and her husband, Sean Alter, on guitar, bass and percussion. Layered guitar intertwined with lush, cello lines support the intricate and honest vocals. Julyda is an additional project from the bigger six-member group, The Blacksmith’s Daughters. Their newest release, Do You Hear Me, is for the dreamer in all of us. The music reflects on love, disappointment, the monotony of life and also the adventure that can be found within. Courtney Yasmineh • 8-11pm Tavern Lounge, Northfield

Honesty is a quality getting rarer and rarer in rock and roll, but you can see, hear and believe it in Courtney Yasmineh. The Chicago/NYC/Minneapolis singer, guitarist, songwriter draws from a poisoned well that runs deep – harsh reflection, brutal frankness, bittersweet inspiration, brief flights of sexual fantasy and blistering romance, but most of all, transcendent saving graces. With each album she continues to expand her musical universe, stretching across the spectrum from indie pop to alt-country to full-tilt rock and roll. Yasmineh returns in support of her seventh album, High Priestess And The Renegade – a mix of alternative, punk and folk – and hailed as “one of the best albums so far of 2018” and earning high praise and five out of five star ratings from critics in the U.S. and Europe. April 2019

Speaking of baggage … This old bag is turning 60 in April! And I am not freaking out at all. In fact, I’m as content as can be about it. I ceased dyeing my locks various shades of the long-ago-blonde of my youth and have been going organic for months. A few weeks ago I got 10 inches of my frazzled, chemically-treated crowning glory chopped off! Bye bye Acme bleach, hello sexagenarian gray! I’m loving the hue, texture, length and style of it. I’m very pleased with the cool, soft steel shade, and a sprinkling of platinum-toned natural highlights, sprouting from my ol’ scalp. But enough about my coif. In other bags … Last month I talked about decluttering my home, art studio, office, car, purse, and my head. This effort to dump excess baggage and organize and simplify is paying off. Creativity is flowing, a sense of peace prevailing, and deep, restful sleep is now the order of the night. Being back in school studying creative writing, and working from my studio on art and writing projects, and caring for my disabled granddaughter, quality sleep and waking productivity are of the utmost importance. Added bonus: I’ve noticed a fairly drastic reduction in the size of the bags beneath my peepers. Did I mention bags? In Episode 101: Baggage of Left Field, Paisley Paws, Constance, and Clara are shopping with “Boomerang Bags!” Northfield has jumped in, bags first, to the UpCycleMN initiative in eliminating single use plastic bags and raising awareness of plastic waste in Northfield and beyond! “Boomerang Bags” are durable, reusable, and are sewn by volunteers from donated fabric. Donate fabric today at the public library! Drop off fabric scraps, old (clean) sheets, curtains, duvet covers, etc … contact Kathy Larson Ness at UPcycleMN1@gmail.com or visit www.upcyclemn.com for more information. My spring wish for you dear darlings is soft green grass beneath your feet, warm sunshine upon your heads, and cool fabric bags loaded with goods that matter most to you. Like tequila, chocolate, or decks of Old Maid cards … or whatever. “The grass is always greener, over the septic tank.” – Erma Bombeck “Just get a bag and drop a dream in it, and you’ll be surprised what happens.” – Charles Nelson Reilly

Although he may be best known as the guitarist of the rock ‘n’ roll powerhouse band The4onthefloor, for over a decade Nick Costa has been actively creating his own music, and he is showing no signs of slowing down. His work has been compared to the songwriting and guitar virtuosity of Jason Isbell and the quick-witted lyrics and clever chord progressions of Father John Misty. Praised as “an absolutely superb cellist” by the Chicago Tribune, John Sharp is the principal cellist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and a top prizewinner of the Tchaikovsky International Cello Competition. Upon the recommendation of Isaac Stern, violinist Liba Shacht made her New York City debut to glowing reviews: “Miss Shacht delights in her nimble technique, and virtuosic display pieces…present few obstacles,” wrote The New York Times. Sharp and Shacht met playing chamber music at the Marlboro Music Festival and married in 1987. They perform frequently as a duo and in collaboration with other musicians. They have performed on WFMT, the Rush Hour Concerts, the Norton Concert Series, the Pilgrim Chamber Players series, concerts in the south of France and most recently the opening concert of the Chamber Music Society of Louisville series.
