Commencement Reception: May 28, 10:30am-12:30pm. Senior Show – An annual exhibition and culminating event in the curriculum of St. Olaf studio art majors. Themes from diverse disciplines run through the young artists’ work as they draw on academic influences from their four years on the Hill. No Man’s Land – An exploration of the numerous ways in which humanity has perceived its connection to the land around it. This year’s senior art history majors delve into Flaten Art Museum’s collection to interpret and challenge this relationship. With works by Edvard Munch, Gary Gutierrez and Linda Forsland, the exhibition demonstrates the interchanging states of harmony and dissonance between humanity and the earth. Various paintings, prints and sculptural objects speak to situations in which land has been exploited, taken and neglected. The exhibit is in the Object Study room, just west of the Flaten Art Museum in the Center for Art and Dance.

Presentation on Carleton’s May Fetes: May 25, 6:30pm Malt-O-Meal Originals – through June 2017 The family of John Campbell, founder of Malt-OMeal, recently gave historic artifacts and archives that document the growth and development of the company to the Northfield Historical Society. This first exhibit of this collection showcases achievements throughout the company’s history – the first plants and workers, the first customers, the first sales and products, the first radio promotion, the first new products, the first famous television advertisement and the first production facility built outside of Minnesota. NHS will host additional thematic exhibits in 2017 and 2018 before celebrating the centennial of the company with a major exhibit in 2019.

Latino (and Friends) Play Festival

In 2012, NHS teacher Jennifer Lompart gifted this community with a festival that focused on powerful young voices – and stories – not often heard on stage. Seven years on, the Latino (and Friends) Play Festival continues to showcase the extraordinary journeys, the courage and perseverance, and ultimately the triumph of its talented students. This year the Northfield High School performing arts class tackles some of the differences between mainstream and minority students through storytelling. The stories are often hard, frequently funny, always uncompromising and absolutely illuminating. Performances at the Northfield Arts Guild Theater are Fridays, May 12 and 19, Saturdays May 13 and 20; all shows begin at 7pm. Tickets will only be sold at the door prior to each performance, and all proceeds benefit the Latino Performing Arts Class at the Northfield High School. 12th annual Maple Syrup Fun Run and Pancake Brunch

At some point – even in Minnesota – the snow melts, the air warms and maple syrup making time commences. And at River Bend Nature Center in Faribault the season is celebrated with their annual Maple Syrup Fun Run, held this year on Sunday, May 6. Take part in races that range from a 5k to a not-for-the-weak-ofheart 50k, or choose a more leisurely one-mile walk. All races bring you through the greening paths and woods. The prizes – real maple syrup harvested right here at River Bend – are given to the top runners in the 5 and 10k races. Fred the Bear CD Release

It began last summer at Hot Spot Music in downtown Northfield, when band members Ray Coudret, Jerry Spencer, Bob Kanzelman and Rick Roy joined forces with “Shadowlands” recording engineer Brad Bivens. The goal? To get three or four good recordings. After 30 hours, spent over the course of three days, the group found itself with an entire album called Just For a While, and they’d like to share that with you. Join the band, with guest Wendy Smith of the Zillionaires, at the upstairs Rueb ‘n’ Stein on May 19 at 7pm, and hear the songs from the new CD in its entirety. You’ll be glad you did.

May Fetes from Carleton’s Hometown Ties

What began as a May ice cream social at Carleton College in 1909 grew over the next 50 years or so to a performing arts extravaganza that drew thousands annually. In conjunction with the Northfield Historical Society’s exhibit “Hometown Ties: Carleton Celebrates 150 years with Northfield,” local historian Susan Hvistendahl traces the growth of this local festival, and explores its impact on the community of Northfield. Video will be shown from this beautiful and impressive event, featuring scenes from elaborate pageants such as Sigurd the Volsung of 1924 with green-haired mermaids, a Viking boat, a chariot drawn by two goats and a snowflake ballet of 125 dancers accompanied by members of the Minneapolis Symphony. Refreshments will be served. Join Hvistendahl at the Northfield Historical Society on May 25 at 6:30pm for this free and enchanting look into Carleton’s – and Northfield’s – not-so-distant past. Standing shoulder to shoulder and offering support as only they can, the courageous mothers of Infants Remembered in Silence invite women to their Mother’s Day Angel Brunch on May 6 to celebrate and commemorate their forever children. The event, at the Congregational Parish House (next to the IRIS House) in Faribault, begins at 10am with Suzanne Schwichtenberg from Gallery On the Go leading participants through a painting, and continues with brunch, support and love. The Contented Cow, Northfield O’Green is Sheri O’Meara and Tom Greenwald, a husband/wife team performing a blend of folk and Americana from old and new masters and incorporating blues, Celtic, their original work and more. O’Meara’s vocals have been heard in the Celtic band Locklin Road for more than a decade, which performs throughout Minnesota and has released five CDs. She has given songwriter showcase concerts in Ireland and plays guitar and bodhran. Greenwald is the latest addition to Locklin Road and his guitar playing has led a variety of bands for more than 30 years from Chicago to Florida to Minnesota. Recognized both nationally and internationally, the St. Olaf Orchestra strives for the highest professional standards. The band Fred the Bear, along with local musician and teacher Ray Coudret, is releasing their first CD of original music. FTB leans toward the Americana side of music and is known for its rich harmonies, emotive dynamics and original songs. Along with Coudret, the band includes Jerry Spencer, Bob Kanzelman and Rick Roy. The CD was recorded in Northfield at Hot Spot Music. As it turned out, the name was an omen as the band recorded July 22-24 – the hottest weekend of the summer. The band hoped to record three or four original tunes, but the weekend would produce far more than that. By the time they were done, the band had recorded nine original songs, including the title track, Just for a While, which was written a few days before the band entered the studio. The night starts with music by Wendy Smith of the Zillionaires at 7pm and FTB will play the songs from the new CD in its entirety starting at 8pm.

Northfield Historical Society An early 20th century spring ice cream social at Carleton became a May festival on the lawn of Gridley Hall dorm on May 22 of 1909, with Maypole dancing, Glee Club singing and the crowning of a May Queen. Over the next half century, entertainment was added to the celebration in the form of plays, dances, operettas and other extravaganzas which drew thousands of people to Carleton’s Lyman Lakes to enjoy the spectacle. Local historian Susan Hvistendahl will trace the celebration’s history and its impact on the community, in conjunction with its current exhibit “Hometown Ties: Carleton Celebrates 150 Years with Northfield” which runs through June.
