Themes from diverse disciplines run through the young artists’ work as they draw on academic influences from their four years on the Hill. No Man’s Land – An exploration of numerous ways in which humanity has perceived its connection to the land around it. This year’s senior art history majors delve into Flaten Art Museum’s collection to interpret and challenge this relationship. With works by Edvard Munch, Gary Gutierrez and Linda Forsland, the exhibit demonstrates interchanging states of harmony and dissonance between humanity and the earth. Various paintings, prints and sculptural objects speak to situations in which land has been exploited, taken and neglected. The exhibit is in the Object Study room, just west of the Flaten Art Museum in the Center for Art and Dance.

This handling of the medium produces a very atmospheric and layered effect, which conveys the ambiguity of my new normal.” Davis Ripley comments on her own work: “I’m drawn to strong lines, bursts of color and details that allow for fresh perspectives. When the baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone’s wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results. One of Sondheim’s most popular works, Into the Woods is a musically sophisticated show with the opportunity to feature actors adept at dark comedy. Casting 12 female and 7 male actors. Bring sheet music for a song to perform 16-32 measures (do not use a song from this show, preferably from a Broadway musical). It parodies the horror film genre, especially the 1931 Universal Pictures adaptation of Mary Shelley‘s Frankenstein and its 1939 sequel, Son of Frankenstein. Frederick Frankenstein inherits his family’s estate in Transylvania. With the help of a hunchbacked sidekick, Igor, and lab assistant, Inga, Frederick finds himself in the mad scientist shoes of his ancestors as he brings to life a creature to rival his grandfather’s. Of course, the monster escapes and hilarity continuously abounds. Fun, fright and musical comedy take center stage. Performances will be Sept. 8-10, 14-17.

Filled with humor, the supernatural and intrigue, this Northfield Arts Guild production “explores the relationship between the natural and supernatural,” says director Deon Haider. “Our stage will incorporate both natural and manmade elements to create a unique island setting in Central Park.” When a particular vessel appears on the horizon of his strange island, Prospero deliberately conjures up a violent storm to meet the ship that carries the men who wronged him. This magical tempest wrecks the ship and washes a cast of colorful characters to the island where nothing is as it seems. First Thursday Fun Fest

This delightful summertime Cannon Falls event is back. Starting in May and running through September, downtown Mill Street comes alive the first Thursday of the month with shopping, games, music and events. June’s scheduled Thursday – that would be Thursday, June 1 – features 40+ vendors, performances from the Cannon Falls School of Dance, robotics demos from the Cannon Falls High School robotics team and the Celebrity (local edition) Trike Race. Additionally, the Goodhue County History Center asks visitors to bring an object, photo or story that answers the question, “What does Cannon Falls mean to you?” Objects and artifacts go to a pop-up display for the season. The First Thursday Fun Fest runs from 5 to 8pm, which guarantees a busy evening. For more information, go to cannonfalls.com.

The Art of a Summer Saturday

It gets better every year. Riverwalk Market Fair, that downtown destination event, is starting its eighth season on June 3. The summer-long fest is held each Saturday from 9am to 1pm and features organic produce, artisan foods, live music and – of course – the best in local fine art and craft. Special events each Saturday will draw kids from 1 to 101. The fair runs every Saturday (barring truly heinous weather) through Oct. 21, with a week off during the Defeat of Jesse James Days celebration in September. She has given songwriter showcase concerts in Ireland and plays guitar and bodhran. Greenwald is the latest addition to Locklin Road and his guitar playing has led a variety of bands for more than 30 years from Chicago to Florida to Minnesota. Cannon River Winery, Cannon Falls A roots rock band from Rochester playing originals and covers. The band draws on the traditions of bands like the Byrds, the Jayhawks, Wilco, the Faces, Son Volt and classic blues and country. Tanzenwald Brewing Co., Northfield Minneapolis-based singer/songwriter Jim Pellinger has performed at colleges, clubs and festivals from the upper Midwest to Central America. He has played solo and with bands, in large outdoor venues and tiny coffeehouses, to big crowds and small gatherings. He’s stood on stages and tabletops, under the lights and in dimly lit corners, in large cities, small towns, a couple of state fairs and one beauty pageant. He’s played four-hour shows single-handedly and traded half-hour sets at a weekly house gig at a bar in Guatemala City with “some guy named Luis, who sang songs like My Way in Spanish. The pay was 15 quetzales and all the Gallo beer I could drink,” says Pellinger. His songwriting bears the mark of a variety of influences such as Lennon & McCartney, Bob Marley, Elvis Costello, Squeeze, even Hank Williams.

Vintage Band Festival celebrated a ten-year anniversary in 2016. The festival has evolved into a rotating format of one-day and four-day events. 2016 e Band Fes ag was the occasion for a four-day event and in 2017 a one-day event will be staged. Saturday, July 29, wind music lovers will assemble in Bridge Square in Downtown Northfield, Minnesota for 12 hours of glorious brass and wind band music. The show will rt hfield, M run from 10am to 10pm and feature a variety of Minnesota music ensembles playing 45- to 90-minute sets. Crowd favorites returning to Vintage Band Festival in 2017 include Bavarian Musikmeisters, Sheldon Theater Brass Band, Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble, Brio Brass, and Copper Street Brass. New this year will be the Fife and Drum Corps from Historic Fort Snelling, Brass Lassie and the McNasty Brass Band. Vintage Band Festival will run concurrently with Riverwalk Market Fair and have a variety of food concessions. Festival goers should bring chairs or blankets and plan to spend the day. Greg Smith & Craig Schuster Hailing from Oakland, CA, Greg Smith came to Northfield in 1977 driving his 1966 Mustang. The music scene in Northfield was Reggae and really laid back at places like Heathstock back then. He married, raised a family, went through seminary and is now a preacher at Main Street Church. He loves the messages of peace and love from the music of the 1960s that he plays. Music is medicinal, comforting and soothing to Craig Schuster. He shares similar musical tastes to Greg Smith, so together they play doo-wop, British, soul, folk, old country, spiritual and patriotic music. They like to keep it simple and enjoy performing and entertaining all age groups. Still lost in the ’60s, Schuster admonishes us to “tune in, turn on, but please don’t drop out!”

Founded in 1979, the Troubadors maintain the tradition of community-based male choruses. This fall, I Cantanti Chamber Choirs will begin their 30th year of making fine choral music in the Northfield area. During Advent they will present their annual Nine Lessons and Carols concert in Northfield and Faribault. In the spring of 2018 the choir will present a concert celebrating the history of the two ensembles. Spring of 2017 was an exciting time for I Cantanti and Le Donne as they performed their first ever concert for children and in April they presented Singing and Sipping in collaboration with local brewers, cidery and distillery. Singing gives Christina Schwietz ultimate joy. Whether she’s singing jazz with Sweet Jazz, the group she co-founded with pianist Peter Webb, playing regularly at “The Cow” and social events, such as Laura Baker Gala, or singing with her daughters in church, singing is the nutrient in her life that fuels her soul and creativity. Currently, Schwietz is exploring ideas for a concert series centered around Antonio Carlos Jobim and Sting.

Marc Reigel In 1965 Marc Reigel founded the Night Crawlers, a band that toured the Midwest and was known as Carleton College’s “House Band,” attracting Carls, Oles and townies alike to dances at Carleton’s Sayles-Hill Gym and Northfield’s Armory. Reigel, who grew up in Owatonna and now lives in Bloomington, has returned to Northfield since 2010 to lead sing-alongs of the songs from 1955 to 1965 that shaped the music his band played. Using both antique and modern instruments, Randall Ferguson’s performance spans 500 years of acoustic guitar music. His repertoire ranges from Renaissance court music to the exciting syncopated dance rhythms of Spanish flamenco. When performing, he uses several instruments, from Renaissance lute and vihuela, to antique guitars from 1785, 1835 and 1900 on to present day concert classical and flamenco guitars. Ferguson has performed in flamenco clubs in Madrid, Spain, Mexico City, Veracruz and Mérida, Mexico. He has also appeared on the Mexican Tonight Show, Anoche, on Mexican National Television.

At the workshop Iron Head Sculptural Services will guide you through how to scratch, mark and draw on your own preformed sand block mold. You will be carving into the sand block to create a relief sculpture. The sand block molds will be transported to Lockerby sheet metal where Iron Head Sculptural Services will break up iron with sledgehammers, melt it in their portable furnace and pour the molten metal in your sand block mold. No experience necessary. All ages welcome. Cost: $45, includes the workshop, iron pour and materials. Scholarships are available for children.
