Themes from diverse disciplines run through the young artists’ work as they draw on academic influences from their four years on the Hill. No Man’s Land – An exploration of numerous ways in which humanity has perceived its connection to the land around it. This year’s senior art history majors delve into Flaten Art Museum’s collection to interpret and challenge this relationship. With works by Edvard Munch, Gary Gutierrez and Linda Forsland, the exhibit demonstrates interchanging states of harmony and dissonance between humanity and the earth. Various paintings, prints and sculptural objects speak to situations in which land has been exploited, taken and neglected. The exhibit is in the Object Study room, just west of the Flaten Art Museum in the Center for Art and Dance.

This handling of the medium produces a very atmospheric and layered effect, which conveys the ambiguity of my new normal.” Davis Ripley comments on her own work: “I’m drawn to strong lines, bursts of color and details that allow for fresh perspectives. As I continued to experience an increased sense of well-being from my photography, I began wondering if mindfully integrating art into our daily lives could lead to a reprieve from our harried, hurried lives.” Artist Reception: June 23, 7-9pm with artist talks at 7:30pm Up Gallery: First Sunrise: Paintings by Siro Amerson – through

Theater Auditions: Fiddler on the Roof

May 30 & 31, 7-9pm, Northfield Dance Academy Fiddler on the Roof features a large cast of children, teens and adults. No prior experience is needed to audition for Northfield Arts Guild Theater productions. Prepare to sing a one-minute musical theater piece of your choosing. Come dressed for a dance audition and bring along a schedule of any rehearsal conflicts. To sign up for an audition, call 507/645-8877 or visit northfieldartsguild.org/theater/auditions. Rehearsals will begin in September and performances will be on weekends Nov. 17-Dec. 2. This classic is directed by Susan Carlson, with musical direction by Alex Kim and choreography by Daphne McCoy. Into the Woods

June 4, 7-9pm Tri-City United Middle School Auditorium, Montgomery June 5, 7-9pm – Prague Theatre, New Prague Presented by Curtain Call Theatre, directed by David Holmes. The story follows a baker and his wife who wish to have a child, Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King’s Festival and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone’s wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results. One of Sondheim’s most popular works, Into the Woods is a musically sophisticated show with the opportunity to feature actors adept at dark comedy. Casting 12 female and 7 male actors. Bring sheet music for a song to perform 16-32 measures (do not use a song from this show, preferably from a Broadway musical). Performances will be Aug. 4-5, 11-13 at Tri City United Middle School in Montgomery. Young Frankenstein

June 18, 5pm, June 19 6pm Paradise Center for the Arts, Faribault Directed by Palmer Huff. The electrifying adaptation of Mel Brooks’ monstrously funny film will leave you in stitches. It parodies the horror film genre, especially the 1931 Universal Pictures adaptation of Mary Shelley‘s Frankenstein and its 1939 sequel, Son of Frankenstein. Frederick Frankenstein inherits his family’s estate in Transylvania. With the help of a hunchbacked sidekick, Igor, and lab assistant, Inga, Frederick finds himself in the mad scientist shoes of his ancestors as he brings to life a creature to rival his grandfather’s. Of course, the monster escapes and hilarity continuously abounds. Fun, fright and musical comedy take center stage. Performances will be Sept. 8-10, 14-17.

Arcadia

June 2-5, 8-11, Th/F/Sa/M 7:30pm, Su 2pm Ames Center, Burnsville Directed by Duck Washington. There was a hermit at Sidley Park. And a genius. And a poet or two. And did someone fight a duel? Or not? In Arcadia, two stories overlap in the same room, almost 200 years apart. In what many regard as his finest play, Tom Stoppard (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, The Real Inspector Hound) bends time and space to bring abstract ideas of math, philosophy and historical inquiry to vivid life, and irrevocably mixes comedy and tragedy. “You cannot stir things apart.” Tickets: $22 adults, $19 seniors, students, Fringe button holders and groups of 8-19, $16 groups of more than 20, available at the Ames Center Box Office, 800/982-2787 or ticketmaster.com. The Tempest

June 9-11, 15-17, 7:30pm Central Park, Northfield Shakespeare’s enchanting story of how love and forgiveness can conquer fear and power. Filled with humor, the supernatural and intrigue, this Northfield Arts Guild production “explores the relationship between the natural and supernatural,” says director Deon Haider. “Our stage will incorporate both natural and manmade elements to create a unique island setting in Central Park.” When a particular vessel appears on the horizon of his strange island, Prospero deliberately conjures up a violent storm to meet the ship that carries the men who wronged him. This magical tempest wrecks the ship and washes a cast of colorful characters to the island where nothing is as it seems. Featuring Brendon Etter as Prospero and Esmé Elzi as Prospero’s daughter, Miranda (a father-daughter duo in real life). Opening night reception – June 9, preceding the show. Pre-show discussion June 11, 7pm. Tickets: $17 adults, $12 seniors and students, available at NorthfieldArtsGuild.org, 507/645-8877 or at the Northfield Arts Guild. In the event of inclement weather the show will move to the Northfield Arts Guild Theater. Funny Girl

JuneBug Lights up the Night

Join music lovers and outdoor revelers for the 9th annual JuneBug Music Festival, at the Contented Cow in downtown Northfield. The music starts on Thursday, June 22 at 6:30pm; festivities continue Friday and Saturday evenings, from 6:30 to 11:30pm each day. Admission is free, and the bands are hot. Pretty cool. For more information, go to contentedcow.com.

The Man In Black is Back

by Felicia Crosby

First Thursday Fun Fest

This delightful summertime Cannon Falls event is back. Starting in May and running through September, downtown Mill Street comes alive the first Thursday of the month with shopping, games, music and events. June’s scheduled Thursday – that would be Thursday, June 1 – features 40+ vendors, performances from the Cannon Falls School of Dance, robotics demos from the Cannon Falls High School robotics team and the Celebrity (local edition) Trike Race. Additionally, the Goodhue County History Center asks visitors to bring an object, photo or story that answers the question, “What does Cannon Falls mean to you?” Objects and artifacts go to a pop-up display for the season. The First Thursday Fun Fest runs from 5 to 8pm, which guarantees a busy evening. For more information, go to cannonfalls.com.

There are tribute bands. And then there are the spine-tingling, hair-standing-onyour-neck incarnations, so close and so full of heart that it’s hard to tell if you’re in the presence of the original artist, or the person who’s bringing him to life before you. Terry Lee Goffee, creator of the Ultimate Johnny Cash Experience, is definitely the latter; he breathes the Man In Black, body and soul. Catch him in the flesh – and Cash in the spirit – at Crossings at Carnegie in Zumbrota on Friday June 23, at 8pm. When he says, “Hello, I’m Johnny Cash”, you’ll believe it. For more information, go to crossingsatcarnegie.com or call 507/732-7616.

The Art of a Summer Saturday

It gets better every year. Riverwalk Market Fair, that downtown destination event, is starting its eighth season on June 3. The summer-long fest is held each Saturday from 9am to 1pm and features organic produce, artisan foods, live music and – of course – the best in local fine art and craft. Special events each Saturday will draw kids from 1 to 101. The fair runs every Saturday (barring truly heinous weather) through Oct. 21, with a week off during the Defeat of Jesse James Days celebration in September. For more information go to riverwalkmarketfair.org.

Imminent Brewery Has Arrived

If you’ve passed by the Northfield Armory garage within the last six months or so, you’ve known something was up, perhaps something even….imminent (sorry about that). Well, we’re happy to say the wait is over. The beers are brewing, the bands are tuned, local caterers stand at the ready: Imminent Brewery has arrived. Join them for their opening weekend, June 16-18, starting at 3pm on Friday (opening times vary beyond that) on 519 Division St. S, downtown Northfield. Friday night’s music features No Time for Fame and Fred the Bear; come again on Saturday to hear Matt Arthur and the Bratlanders. Welcome, Imminent, and here’s to a great summer. For more information, go to imminentbrewing.com.

The Contented Cow, Northfield

Dave Dearnley and Dyno Don Penny met during a catfish tournament songwriting contest in 2005. Their mutual style of looking at life and writing songs about the journey clicked. With the addition of Heather Marlene Wilson, Joshua Wrong, Rob Lampe (formerly of Northfield) and Laura Billings, this unique mixture of rock, folk, country and bluegrass has meshed into a cohesive unit. No subject has escaped their observation and way with words. It’s pretty near impossible to not listen to their songs after reading titles such as Bomb ‘em Till They Build a Wal-Mart, Jesus Owes Me 20 Bucks, I Like Pot and Roadkill Chili. DJ • 9-11pm

Therese Anderson 507-271-4599

Tanzenwald Brewing Co., Northfield Minneapolis-based singer/songwriter Jim Pellinger has performed at colleges, clubs and festivals from the upper Midwest to Central America. He has played solo and with bands, in large outdoor venues and tiny coffeehouses, to big crowds and small gatherings. He’s stood on stages and tabletops, under the lights and in dimly lit corners, in large cities, small towns, a couple of state fairs and one beauty pageant. He’s played four-hour shows single-handedly and traded half-hour sets at a weekly house gig at a bar in Guatemala City with “some guy named Luis, who sang songs like My Way in Spanish. The pay was 15 quetzales and all the Gallo beer I could drink,” says Pellinger. His songwriting bears the mark of a variety of influences such as Lennon & McCartney, Bob Marley, Elvis Costello, Squeeze, even Hank Williams.

Greg Smith & Craig Schuster Hailing from Oakland, CA, Greg Smith came to Northfield in 1977 driving his 1966 Mustang. The music scene in Northfield was Reggae and really laid back at places like Heathstock back then. He married, raised a family, went through seminary and is now a preacher at Main Street Church. He loves the messages of peace and love from the music of the 1960s that he plays. Music is medicinal, comforting and soothing to Craig Schuster. He shares similar musical tastes to Greg Smith, so together they play doo-wop, British, soul, folk, old country, spiritual and patriotic music. They like to keep it simple and enjoy performing and entertaining all age groups. Still lost in the ’60s, Schuster admonishes us to “tune in, turn on, but please don’t drop out!”

Northfield Troubadors

Founded in 1979, the Troubadors maintain the tradition of community-based male choruses. Appearances are scheduled October through December and April through May, culminating in a spring concert for the public. New members are welcome without audition. Alluvion

If anyone is wondering what the next “basement gem” to come out of Minnesota’s underbelly is going to sound like, they should probably talk to Berndt Evenson, the guitar-weilding gent responsible for Alluvion. The Alluvion concert experience features live guitar, midi tweaking, analogue ribbon improvisation and heavily effect-driven vocals. Evenson seems determined to assure audience members that this isn’t typical EDM or basement rock; however, once you’ve seen or heard Alluvion, that becomes delightfully apparent. The ongoing motto from Alluvion over the past few years has been “Feel The Waves.” With the ever-growing sound from album to album, it has become clear how that came to be. facebook.com/alluvionmn

Christina Schwietz

Singing gives Christina Schwietz ultimate joy. Whether she’s singing jazz with Sweet Jazz, the group she co-founded with pianist Peter Webb, playing regularly at “The Cow” and social events, such as Laura Baker Gala, or singing with her daughters in church, singing is the nutrient in her life that fuels her soul and creativity. Currently, Schwietz is exploring ideas for a concert series centered around Antonio Carlos Jobim and Sting.

Marc Reigel In 1965 Marc Reigel founded the Night Crawlers, a band that toured the Midwest and was known as Carleton College’s “House Band,” attracting Carls, Oles and townies alike to dances at Carleton’s Sayles-Hill Gym and Northfield’s Armory. Reigel, who grew up in Owatonna and now lives in Bloomington, has returned to Northfield since 2010 to lead sing-alongs of the songs from 1955 to 1965 that shaped the music his band played. A fan in the Netherlands created a Night Crawlers Facebook page which now has fans from 41 countries. facebook.com/pages/The-Night-Crawlers-60s-Minnesota-GarageBand/114548891904744 Upcoming Gig: June 15 @ Froggy Bottoms River Pub/Lily PADio, Northfield, 8:30-10:30pm Marc Reigel (keyboard) will be joined by Night Crawlers Barry Gillespie and Mark Headington, Wendy Smith (guitar) and Rae Rusnak (harmonica).
