D’Souza is dedicated to preserving the history and tradition of mosaic art, along with the techniques and materials used in the past. Dan Wiemer considers himself primarily a landscape artist. The majority of his work is watermedia. Wiemer paints both on location (plein air) and in the studio. He utilizes the opaque nature of acrylic and the transparent qualities of watercolor to create contrasts. He plays with shapes and textures of the landscape to find rhythms in the scene that translate into exciting motifs. He doesn’t try to replicate nature but to distill, stylize and give the viewer his interpretation, something they can be a part of. Artist Reception: June 16, 1-3pm. Wine and light appetizers.

Lysistrata
June 22-24, 28-30, 7:30pm Central Park, Northfield The Northfield Arts Guild and director Shari Setchell present a bawdy comedy of gender relations and reason. A hit since 411 B.C., this social spoof offers a surprisingly contemporary take on anti-war sentiment and the creative spirit. Athens and Sparta have been at war for years with no end in sight. Peace-loving Lysistrata has a solution – she unites the women of Athens to withhold sexual relations to encourage their soldiers to come to their senses. Putting the plan into action, however, proves more difficult and more hilarious than anyone imagined. This production contains mature content and language. Tickets: $17 adults, $12 seniors/students, available at The Guild, 304 Division St. S, northfieldartsguild.org or 507/645-8877. Young People’s Theater Workshop Performances

First Fridays in Northfield
By Felicia Crosby
Join fellow fun seekers at Northfield’s inaugural First Friday on Friday (naturally), June 1, from 5 to 9pm. This monthly downtown all-arts celebration features a wide-ranging array of offerings, from poetry readings and bluegrass to dance performances and visual art displays, in venues throughout the city – each and every one free. Four hours is hardly enough time to take it all in, but you’ll love everything you get to experience. And, of course, there’s always next month. For more information and a comprehensive lineup of the evening’s happenings, go to downtownnorthfield.org/events.
Cannon Falls Chamber Fun Fest
JuneBug at the Contented Cow
Join music lovers and outdoor revelers for the JuneBug Festival of Music, an annual tradition from the Contented Cow in downtown Northfield. The bands begin to play on Friday, June 29 at 5pm; the festivities continue on Saturday, June 30, starting at 3pm. The music – and the fun – goes well into the night. Admission is free and the bands are hot, which makes it all pretty cool. For more information, go to contentedcow.com.
The entrepreneurial spirit is in full flower during the Cannon Falls Chamber Fun Fest, where more than 40 regional vendors showcase locally handcrafted goods and goodies. Come get to know the artisans behind the arts while supporting the excellent things they make. The Fun Fest is held on June 14, from 5 to 8pm on Mill St. near the Cannon River Winery, in pretty, bike-friendly Cannon Falls. The event is free, the temptations abundant. For more information, go to cannonfalls.org/events.
Farmington Dew Days Faribault Heritage Days
What isn’t there to do at the Faribault Heritage Days? This family friendly, four-day extravaganza begins on June 13 and runs through June 16 with, literally, something for everyone. Step back in time with tours through the Rice County Historical Society, the Hutchinson House and the Alexander Faribault House. Take a kayak tour along the Cannon River, or learn about the fur trading past at Central Park. Shop the farmers markets, art fairs, downtown vendors and the Faribault Woolen Mills. Enter the kids in fishing, karaoke, races and soap box contests. And, of course, what’s a fair without a carnival, a pub crawl or live music? For all this and more (yes, there’s more), go to faribaultheritagedays.com.
june 2018
All of Farmington is in on the fun during the Farmington Dew Days, which runs this year from June 12-16 at various venues in downtown Farmington, and includes a Family and Friends Day at the Dakota City Heritage Village, food eating contests, car cruises, a Dew run, bingo with beer and brats and a medallion hunting contest. Many events require a purchased button; for more information, go to farmingtondewdays.com.

Luke Hendrickson • 8-11pm
Tavern Lounge, Northfield After getting his start playing bass in metal and hard rock bands, Luke Hendrickson found his voice in country music, particularly that of the old-time and “outlaw” variety. After founding and fronting the Rochester-based group Luke ‘n’ Bob Texas, Luke built up a sizable set list, including tunes from legends like Haggard, Jennings, Cash and Jones, as well as a couple handfuls of originals. But don’t be surprised if you occasionally hear a non-country song, arranged to fit in a country setting.

Imminent Brewing, Northfield The Big Dixie Swingers are committed to the revival of the music of America’s rural radios and stages. Their music is a blend of pre-war jazz, black-and-white string band and popular music, all spun back out as “western swing.” The Big Dixie Swingers have taken this sound up and down the East Coast and across the Midwest, winning the Americana and Roots music contest at last year’s Minnesota State Fair. It’s a recognizable style of times gone by that is still heard on the streets of New Orleans today.

Cannon River Clay Tour • 10am-5pm
Bluedog • 8-10pm
The Contented Cow, Northfield A five-member blues/rock band out of Minneapolis formed in 2001 by Joni Weston and Eric Buffalohead, Bluedog has released several albums and singles which have been nominated for Best Blues Recording for the Native American Music Awards and the Indian Summer Music Awards. Their music is influenced by life experiences of Native people. Weston states that “Native people have experienced the blues, too. For us it reflects a significant part of life for Native people and our relationship with the U.S. government in the past, present and future. All the pain we’ve endured from massacres, boarding schools and forced removal from our homes, etc… all attempts to erase our culture and our people. We are still here. Our music celebrates life, the good and bad.” The band has performed across the U.S. in support of their original recordings and has fronted notable blues acts including: The Robert Cray Band, Indigenous, Los Lonely Boys, Corey Stevens, John Mayall, Kenny Neal Band, Lil Ed and the Blues Imperials, Coco Montoya, Ana Popovic, Walter Trout, Shannon Curfman and the Jerry Garcia Band. The Contented Cow, Northfield Kitty’s uncle is Bunny Wailer of Bob Marley and the Wailers fame, so music is literally in her blood. She grew up listening to a healthy blend of reggae, rap and R&B. At a young age Jack discovered his vaudevillian great-grandfather’s phonograph record collection and spent his childhood listening to cats like Bing Crosby, Al Jolson and Rudy Vallee. As fate would have it, oddball ukulele legend Tiny Tim moved in next door and became Jack’s babysitter. That rich musical stew forms the blend of Jack and Kitty’s Emmy Award-winning artistic approach. It’s organic and acoustic with nothing but positive vibes. Laid-back music steeped in tradition with one foot firmly in the future, they call their style “organic vaudeville folk.”

The Contented Cow, Northfield Skipdilly • 3-5pm Ghost Wagon • 5-7pm – Ghost Wagon’s unique sound is difficult to place within any particular genre. Moving lyrics and beautiful melodies adorned with multi-layered instruments (fiddle, sax, pedal steel, accordion, guitars, uke, mando, keys) to evoke emotion as well as thought. Their debut album Crooked & Dark, recorded at legendary Twin Cities’ recording studio The Terrarium and released at the Bryant-Lake Bowl Theater in June 2017, continues to receive positive reviews and radio airplay. More at ghostwagon.net. The Zillionaires • 7-9pm – A four-piece electric band with Wendy Smith (guitar, vocals, accordion), Peter Nelson (guitar and vocals), Dave Drentlaw (drums) and Mike Legvold (bass). They play Smith’s originals along with covers from a variety of styles including blues, rock ‘n’ roll, roots and country. One of Northfield’s most danceable bands. Confused Brothers Band • 9-11pm – Based in Minneapolis, this former trio (and now full band) features a brass section that blows the roof off clubs and festivals. Funky, bluesy, reggaeton rock ‘n’ roll is the specialty.
