The Art of a Summer Saturday
The Get Outside Edition
By Felicia Crosby
Popcorn Wagon 40th Anniversary Party
What would Northfield’s Bridge Square be without its iconic popcorn wagon? A true sign of summer weather, this 1918 wagon has graced the downtown greenspace since Vera Johansen brought it to town in 1979. June 13, its story gets celebrated. Join local historian Susan Hvistendahl and Johansen’s daughters Jeanine and Carol for stories, sing-alongs and, of course, popcorn. Festivities begin at 6pm in Bridge Square. In case of rain, event moves inside the Northfield Historical Society.
It gets better every year. Riverwalk Market Fair, that downtown Northfield destination event, is starting its eighth season on June 1. The summer-long fest is held Saturdays 9am-1pm and features organic produce, artisan foods, live music and – of course – the best in local fine art and craft. Special events each week will draw kids from 1 to 101. The fair runs every Saturday (barring truly heinous weather) through October, with a week off during the Defeat of Jesse James Days celebration in September. For more information, go to riverwalkmarketfair.org
Faribault Heritage Days
What isn’t there to do at the Faribault Heritage Days? This family-friendly, four-day extravaganza begins on June 12 and runs through the 15th with, literally, something for everyone. Step back in time with tours through the Historical Society and the Alexander Faribault House. Visit the Faribault Diversity Coalition Open House. Take a kayak tour along the Cannon River, or blow massive bubbles in Central Park with the Baron of Bubble. Shop the farmers markets, art fairs, downtown vendors and the Faribault Woolen Mills. Enter the kids in fishing, karaoke, races and soap box contests. And, of course, what’s a fair without a carnival, a pub crawl or live music? For all this and more (yes, there’s more), go to faribaultheritagedays.com.
Village of Yesteryear, Owatonna
In 1962 the Steele County Historical Society was gifted the Saco Church, and the Village of Yesteryear was created. Over the last 50+ years it’s grown to an impressive open-air museum that features 19 historic structures, expert tour guides and a newly-opened History Center. An affectionate and authentic window into pioneer life, the Village is open every Tuesday-Sunday through September, which makes it a great way to learn history while enjoying our glorious Minnesota summers. For more information, go to steelehistorymuseum.org/village-of-yesteryear.

Joe Nicola holds down the low end on upright bass, Patrick Giblin manages soulful and wailing lead vocals and moving melodies on guitar, Wilson Goss keeps the toes tapping on banjo and the band’s sound is completed by the sometimes dancing, sometimes battling interplay between Courtney Buck’s fiddle and Mark Wiltse’s harmonicas. Brule River Scene
Jim Holden inherited the fishing gene from his father, who in retirement fished Fox Lake near Sherburn, MN, almost every day during the season. Pushing his weather-beaten boat into the water, he rowed to his favorite spots and cast for sunnies, crappies, bullheads, and northerns. Often he landed some good-sized northerns and, as his Nordic ancestors might have done, displayed the heads of these sharp-toothed creatures on the garage door. While his father’s passion for lake fishing did not take, Holden developed a preference for angling for trout in cool, clear streams, a passion that began some 40 years ago when he hooked up a fly rod and reel with a size 8 hook and worm to fish the Middle Branch of the Whitewater River. It wasn’t long, however, before he “graduated” to proper fly fishing, a pursuit that has provided countless hours of joy these many years. So this book is his way of giving back to the sport.

In addition, there are two stories written by his BFFF (best fly fishing friend) Dave Emery, a retired St. Olaf economics professor. Holden, a former Northfield High School English teacher and tennis coach, is also the author of a history of boys’ high school tennis in Minnesota called Tennis in the Northland and a memoir of the year he taught school in England (A Yank in Queen Elizabeth’s Court). Vinnie Rose is the Midwest’s premier “live-looping” acoustic guitarist and vocalist. Drawing from his 1000+ song repertoire of pop/rock/country/R&B/ blues/old-school rap covers and two albums of originals, Rose artfully creates dynamic, skillful and entertaining shows that can include the likes of Ed Sheeran, The Weeknd, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Keith Urban, The Lumineers and 2Pac. Using a looping effects pedal, Rose layers rhythm guitar, bass and other tracks in real time. Accompanied with a 3¼-octave vocal range and melodic guitar solos, Rose’s live one-man-band show has become a very popular Midwest act. He welcomes song requests from the audience and loves interacting with a crowd. Bar Bingo • 3pm Northfield VFW

David Allen has been a painter and sculptor for 50-plus years. He tries to capture nostalgic small town moments using acrylic, oil and watercolors. Often he uses snowfall to reflect the beauty of light and the warmth of these themes. Northfield has proven to be a wealth of inspiration in his paintings because of its small town flavor and timeless charm. His metal and ceramic sculptures follow classic themes such as Don Quixote, and of everyday experiences like dog walking, bird feeding and going to the fair. See more:

Grady McGovern, born and raised in Northfield, was inspired to paint while taking a college art class. His first painting was a crude mixing of the St. Johns’ Abbey in Collegeville, MN, with the background sky of Van Gogh’s Starry Night. (It was as cheesy as it sounds, but that first inspiration from impressionism continues to inform his work today.)
Todd Lipper
Hooked from that point forward, he went on to earn a Masters in Art Education and has been teaching and creating art for the last 20 years. His favorite subjects are the people and places he loves, so his paintings are mostly of downtown Northfield, Northfield athletes, St. John’s University and its athletes, his son, Jadyn, and self portraits. /gradymcgovernart

Tami Resler
In Clark Kent-style transformation, Tami Resler comes home from her day job as a banker, sheds her work clothes, and dons her grubbies, because it’s time to hit the dirt. Whether parking herself in front of a favorite movie to sculpt or throwing clay on the wheel while listening to an audio book, she finds that time warps and hours pass while the clay takes shape. Often she jots down notes: creatures – a mouse who keeps his cheese in a case to bring with him while he travels, a squirrel who has his own nut case, a rat on his clarinet – or larger issues she can bring to life through clay.

Simply Fodder For Your Next Cocktail Party
HAPPENINGS Thursday, June 13, continued
Say Cheese... As we welcome Conrad back in the fold of Left Field after an extended hiatus that began when he ran with the bulls in Pamplona a few years ago, we find him settling in with Constance, chowing down on cheese pizza at the Armory Square “Cafe Shawn On The Lawn” walk-up bar. Every Wednesday, all summer long, get your made-to-order pizza (4 p.m. until they are sold out)! Beer, wine, and cocktails will also be served. A great way to spend hump day in Northfield! Say Cheese Balls... Speaking of cheese, I love cheese. Real cheese. However, I get a quarterly craving for fake chemical dust cheese in the form of cheese balls, or puffs. I’ve described this addiction before. Once the craving sets in, my singular focus is to find a dealer – usually at the gas station, the dollar store, or grocery store. Once I score my fix, I head home to begin the ritual. This involves my granddaughter – she loves these delectable, dissolving, completely unhealthy tidbits too. Hey, it’s not like I’m feeding her lead paint chips! Anyway, back to the ritual. Wearing clothes that camouflage the inevitable smears of orange powdery, gooey residue is a must. Then we find a fun movie to watch, or if it’s nice out we find a place to park our fannies in the sunshine. Armed with a jumbo pack of antiseptic handy wipes, we commence consumption. Once we’ve had our fill, and our digits are coated with 6 inches of cheese gunk, enter ape-like behavior as we try to suck our fingers clean before we employ the use of the handy wipes. Having wrapped up another bender recently, we’re good to go. Until next time. Say Cheese Curds... So, the other fromage related addiction I have is Ellsworth cheese curds. In the olden days I would drive to Cheeseconsin to nab some from one of the many cheddar huts dotting the roadsides of our neighboring dairy state. Now they are available at my fingertips ... through grocery delivery! In the last year I’ve been having most of my groceries and household supplies delivered. The cost is reasonable, and it saves me invaluable time. Time that can be dedicated to writing, drawing, painting, and eating cheese. Did I Say Cheese Pizza? Yes, I did. One more confession. I love cheese pizza, and I’m hooked on Heggie’s frozen pie. When it’s cooked. The cheese they use is stinkin’ good, and it’s available via grocery delivery. Anyhow, get your cheese and your music on... Tavern Lounge has a great live music lineup for June. You can enjoy the fine musicianship of Mark Kreitzer, Ben Aaron, Paul Seeba, Mark Mraz, Blood Brother, Joe Carey, Richard Mittelstet, Oake & Paine, JulyDa, Dan Rumsey, Julian Manzara, and Matt Arthur! Mark your calendars for a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night, 8-11p.m. Reunion Stage offers up some awesome Friday night music entertainment in June with The Chad Johnson Project, Fred the Bear, Courtney Yasmineh, and Billy McLaughlin & Jeff Arundel.

Triple Stitch
The Lonsdale quartet – now made up of Jimmy Riot (frontman), Tony Campion (drums and vocals), Joe Schaumann (guitar and vocals), and Katie Schaumann (bass guitar and vocals) – plans to pick up with a fresh lineup and new music after a four-year hiatus of the members working on other projects. The band’s debut full-length album, This is Rebellion, released in 2010, seven years after the band’s formation, proved to be an explosive catalyst to the band’s career. On the back of the success of that record, the band released the EP, Your Love Will be the Death of All Rock ‘n’ Roll in 2013. Full of power-driven guitar riffs, the band’s reverence for acts like Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Tom Petty and Johnny Cash is palpable. Their unbridled rock abandon, towering riffs and aggressive vocals flirt with the line between anarchy and hope. Alluvion
/Bonnie-the-Clydes-773495826015942
After a recent tour through practically every state west of Minnesota, Alluvion says he’s already planning more shows for the Upper Midwest and beyond, and hopes to put out more full-length releases before another full tour begins. His cover/remixes of Eiffel 65’s Blue (Da Ba Dee), Tove Lo’s hit Habits and Bob Dylan’s Ballad of Hollis Brown have caught the attention of audiences; and although he has no intention of becoming a “cover band,” he enthusiastically hints at more remixes in the near future, “I have some really interesting ideas for the next ones (laughs,) I doubt anyone will see them coming.”
The Alluvion concert experience features live guitar, midi tweaking, analogue ribbon improvisation and heavily effect-driven vocals. Evenson is determined to assure audience members that this isn’t typical EDM or basement rock; however, once you’ve seen or heard Alluvion, that becomes delightfully apparent. HAPPENINGS Friday, June 21, continued Courtney Yasmineh • 8-11pm Reunion, Northfield
The Chicago/NYC/Minneapolis singer, guitarist, songwriter draws from a poisoned well that runs deep – harsh reflection, brutal frankness, bittersweet inspiration, brief flights of sexual fantasy and blistering romance, but most of all, transcendent saving graces. With each album she continues to expand her musical universe, stretching across the spectrum from indie pop to alt-country to full-tilt rock and roll. Yasmineh returns in support of her seventh album, High Priestess And The Renegade, a mix of alternative, punk and folk, hailed as “one of the best albums so far of 2018,” earning high praise from critics in the U.S. and Europe.
