Richards says, “As a colorist, I find dry pastel the perfect medium to explore the depths of color since dry pastels are almost pure pigment. Isopropyl alcohol mixed Davis Ripley with dry pastels allows me to both draw and paint with pastels. This handling of the medium produces a very atmospheric and layered effect, which conveys the ambiguity of my new normal.” Davis Ripley comments on her own work: “I’m drawn to strong lines, bursts of color and details that allow for fresh perspectives. As I continued to experience an increased sense of well-being from my photography, I began wondering if mindfully integrating art into our daily lives could lead to a reprieve from our harried, hurried lives.”

Of Brush and Lens: Paintings by Rachel Egeberg and photographs by Michael Wetteland – July 20-Aug. 19 – Egeberg’s paintings are “about finding and trusting in the flow of your life. Trusting in the darkness and the light. Experimenting with line and color and pace and movement and letting it all come together to create something that feels alive and expansive. A manifestation of the powerful creative force Wetteland that is within each of us.” Mike Wetteland is a photographer whose interest in the medium began with his childhood love for and fascination with things found in the woodlands, along streams, and in the open prairie. “Never the same moment to moment,” says Wetteland, “the dynamic flux of light, color and form would reveal its subtle beauty whenever I was still, attentive and receptive enough to experience it. As time passed, my appreciation for the natural landscape deepened and my desire to share these experiences grew.” Artist Reception: Aug. 4, 7-9pm, with artist talks at 7:30pm. The Pirates of Penzance
Theater
Young People’s Theater Workshop Performances
June 28-29 5:30pm, June 30 10am Arcadia Charter School Each YPTW class starts with a theme, and over a three-week period students create, rehearse and perform several original scripts. These unique scripts meld together for a fun and extraordinary show. New themes are chosen for each session, with session one being “Something Wicked This Way Comes,” in honor of The Guild’s summer production of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest. YPTW’s second session theme is “Making Waves,” a nod to The Guild’s late summer production of The Pirates of Penzance. Tickets: $5 adults, $3 students, available at the Northfield Arts Guild, 507/645-8878 or at the door.
Menopause the Musical
July 16, 2 and 7pm Ames Center, Burnsville Now celebrating 16 years of female empowerment through hilarious musical comedy, Menopause The Musical® has evolved as a “grassroots” movement of women who deal with life adjustments after 40 by embracing each other and the road ahead. Set in a department store, four women meet by chance while shopping for a black lace bra at a lingerie sale. Noticing similarities among one another, the all-female cast jokes about their woeful hot flashes, mood swings, wrinkles, weight gain and more. These women form a sisterhood and unique bond with the entire audience as they rejoice in celebrating that menopause is no longer “The Silent Passage.” The laughter-filled 90-minute production gets audience members out of their seats and singing along to parodies from classic pop songs of the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. Tickets: $33-$53, available at the Ames Center Box Office, 800/982-2787 or ticketmaster.com.
July 21-23, 28-30, Aug. 4-6 F/Sa 7:30pm, Su 2pm Arcadia Charter School Directed by Bob Gregory-Bjorklund with musical direction by Daniel Kallman and choreography by Shari Setchell. Set sail with this Northfield Arts Guild Theater production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic operetta. On the coast of Cornwall, a band of tenderhearted pirates celebrates the coming of age of Frederic, who was mistakenly apprenticed to the pirates until his 21st birthday. Now, Frederic has vowed to devote his life to the extermination of piracy – until a ludicrous leap year snag threatens to keep him apprenticed to the pirates for life. Throw in a bevy of beauties, a brash pirate king, the delightfully stuffy Major-General Stanley and you’ve got an endearing evening of fun for the entire family. An opening night reception is scheduled for July 21 and a post-show discussion will occur following the July 23 matinee. Tickets: $18 adults, $13 seniors/students, available at northfieldartsguild.org, 507/645-8877 or at the Northfield Arts Guild. Cabaret
July 28-30, Aug. 3-5 7:30pm, Aug. 6 2pm Paradise Center for the Arts, Faribault Presented by The Merlin Players. Music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. Directed by Julianna Skluzacek, choreographed by Mary Hahn, starring Betsy Cole and Daniel Yoder. This award-winning musical follows the exploits of Sally Bowles, an English singer in pre-war Berlin, who ignores the warning signs as the Nazis rise to power and life becomes a dangerous game. Tickets: $16 adult, 12 and under $10, available at paradisecenterforthearts.org.

Tanzenwald Brew-Haha
by Felicia Crosby
So there was a guy who walked into a bar….Northfield brew pub sensation Tanzenwald is expanding its entertainment beyond its already excellent musical offerings with a spankin’ fresh comedy show on July 13. Beginning at 8 pm, host Billy Gaus will join comedians Henry Fuguitt, Kathleen O’Brien, Wendy Berkowitz and Corey Adam for a rollicking night of laughs served, of course, with homemade German-inspired dishes and what’s deliciously fresh on tap. For more information, call 507/366-2337 or go to tanzenwald.com.
Ferndale Market Farm Tour
Back before “humanely raised” was a thing, it’s what the Peterson family just did. Since 1939, this family owned farm in the low rolling hills of Cannon Falls has been raising free-range turkeys; since 2008 their on-farm store, Ferndale Market, has partnered with more than 75 regional farmers and food producers who share their vision of healthfully raised food to sell local produce and meats. Join them on Saturday, July 15 from 11am to 4pm to meet the farmers, enjoy some treats and have some fun at the Ferndale Market Farm Tour. Wagon tours, live music and an up-close-andpersonal view of local food raised well rounds out the afternoon. Great way to enjoy a summer Saturday. For more information, go to ferndalemarketonline.com or call 507/263-4556.
Books Under the Stars
Summer evenings, a favorite song and book, and soon to bed – how the most gossamer of childhood memories are formed. Books and Stars continues to enchant little readers on Wednesday evenings through the summer, with Booker the Bookmobile and live entertainment at parks throughout the city. The event is always free and the magic it creates is, of course, priceless. For more information, call 507/645-6606 or go to guides.mynpl.org/booksandstars. Books and Stars is made possible by the Friends and Foundation of the Northfield Library.
Time for the (Rice County) Fair
County fair season, that time-honored summertime tradition, has begun and the Rice County Fair delivers good times in abundance. Advertising family fun, food, education and animals, it‘s a celebration of country life that can’t be faked; from the live music to the livestock, rides and exhibitions, this is a family friendly festival that’s guaranteed to deliver a good time. It runs July 18-23 in Faribault, and all the information, including entertainment schedules and 4-H info, is online at ricecountyfair.net. Or call the Rice County Fair office at 507/332-2470. Enjoy the cotton candy.

Art on the Hills Returns
After an absence of several years, a cherished Owatonna celebration of the arts is back, and it’s better than ever. Make a day of it and mosey on down to the Owatonna Arts Center on July 29 & 30 for the Art on the Hills; you won’t be disappointed. This extensive juried show – more than 50 local and regional artists will be both exhibiting and selling their works – features live music, ethnic foods and a “Kids Create” tent, as well as some of the best visual art in Southern Minnesota. The show runs 9am-5pm on the 29th and 10am-4pm on the 30th, and is held on the venerable Arts Center grounds. Admission is free, as is the artistic inspiration. For more information, go to oacarts.org or call 507/451-0533.
Menopause: the Musical
Can a stroke of genius claim inspiration from a hot flash and a bottle of wine? If you answer in the affirmative, then you might be ready for Menopause: the Musical. This celebration of all aspects of what’s known, affectionately or not, as “the change” is brought to loving and hilarious life at the Ames Center in Burnsville for one day only, July 16, with performances at 2 and 7pm. This laugh-filled production includes parodies of classic pop songs from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s and encourages audience singalong. Bring a hand fan and enjoy the ride. For more information and ticket prices, go to ticketmaster.com or call the Ames Center Box Office at 800/982-2787.
