Coloring packets with park images from Fred’s sketchbooks will be distributed. August 3 is backup day in case of nasty weather but plein air artists do weather. South Central Minnesota Studio ARTour

The 2019 Garden Tour: Flowers and Fine Art. Features six gardens with six different artists in each garden. This year’s theme is “We Are Water” and all Garden Tour proceeds benefit the beautification of Northfield’s downtown and parks.

Gardens vary from private homes to a church to the BeeButterfly-Dragonfly & Pergola Gardens at Riverside/Lions Park. The artists include Allan Mathison (watercolor and acrylics), Craig Swenson (wood carving and pyrography), Karen Oiseth (painting), Joe May (photography), Jennifer Wolcott (steel sculpture) and Gail Gates (digital creations about water). The Studio ARTour is celebrating its 15th Year. Over the years the artists and locations have changed, but the quality of the art, the variety of media represented and the enthusiasm of the artists has not. Once a year, the artists of South Central Minnesota invite the public into their studios to see where and how they make their art. Visitors can buy original handmade art right from the artists themselves, visit with them, see art being made and learn about different art forms. This year’s tour features 44 artists. Many of the 18 participating studios will be hosting multiple artists. ARTour artists often show throughout the year at galleries across the country, participate in shows and sell locally. Paradise Center for the Arts has three on-site galleries and one offsite gallery that feature established, emerging and student artists. Carlander Gallery: A 630-ft2 gallery in which juried art exhibits are curated by the Paradise Gallery Committee throughout the year. Lois Vranesh Boardroom Gallery: A 275-ft2 multi-purpose meeting space and two-dimensional visual art gallery. The juried exhibits are six to eight weeks long, in conjunction with the Carlander and Corey Lyn Creger Memorial Galleries. Corey Lyn Creger Memorial Gallery: Located on the main level of Paradise Center for the Arts, this is a gallery of student artists mentored by the Gallery Committee. Gail Gates/ Aging Schmaging

When midlife arrived, Gail Gates decided she could either run away as fast as her short Norwegian/German/Bohemian legs would take her, or embrace the changes. She decided to embrace. What followed was a creative storm of sorts, ultimately leading her back to photography and writing. After receiving an Individual Artist Grant from the East Central Regional Art Council in 2016, she began mixing iPhone apps with her traditional photography. Dennis McClintock

Dennis McClintock has participated in most years of the Northfield Riverwalk Market Fair and 2019 will be his tenth year as part of the Northfield Arts Guild Riverfront Arts Festival during Defeat of Jesse James Days. He photographs landscapes, sunsets, historical buildings and other man-made structures, nature and wildlife.

McClintock’s art has been displayed and/or sold in galleries, art shows, restaurants, gift and retail shops, including the Northfield Arts Guild Gallery and Gift Shop, FiftyNorth Gallery, Archer House River Inn, Frame Works St Paul and The HideAway Coffee and Wine Bar McClintock has shot all digital since 2003, exercising his creative talents in both the capture of images and the post processing. Images are sold as prints on paper (matted and/or framed), gallery wrap canvas and metal, with more substrates to come.

Julie Fakler

Julie Fakler creates vibrant original domestic animal paintings and pet portraits. She has received individual artist grants from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council (SEMAC) for projects that promote domestic animals: Prairie’s Edge Humane Society (2011), S.A.F.E. Sanctuary (2014) and Southeastern MN Farm Animal Portraits (2017). Fakler is director of operations at Paradise Center for the Arts and sits on the SEMAC Board of Directors. Kathy Miller

Watercolor artist Kathy Miller lives in Northfield. She also spends part of the year in Albuquerque, NM, and Wecota, SD. A year before retiring from 22 years of teaching elementary school in 2007, she took her first watercolor class and since has attended numerous watercolor workshops throughout Minnesota, the Southwest and Giverny, France.

Miller now devotes her time to painting and teaching watercolor in her downtown Northfield studio and at various local sites. She has come to consider painting her job, one she looks forward to every day. “All my effort goes into learning about the medium and developing a relationship with the paint, paper and paintbrushes. I am filled with an inner need to convey to others the message of the absolute magnificence and beauty of this world we all share.” Her works reflect her love for nature and can be seen on her website, along with listings of her classes and other upcoming events.

Linda Van Lear

Van Lear is a lifelong resident of Faribault. She began painting briefly while attending college. After a 36-year career as a social worker, Van Lear decided to take her art work seriously. Van Lear’s paint mediums include watercolor and acrylic. Her subject matter is varied and includes vineyards, Tuscan scenery, local downtown buildings and landscapes. She vacations near the gulf in Texas over the winter, where she enjoys painting seascapes and wildlife. Her paintings have sold in Minnesota as well as Texas and receive acclaim in art contests and area fairs. Another niche Van Lear explores is her porcelain clay jewelry design. She creates various flowers and butterfly necklaces as well as pieces with seashells and silver. Much of her works sell through a retail store in Texas.

Wolf Creek Threads Wolf Creek Threads was born out of Lynn Laudenschlager’s passion for interior design and her love to create. “I’ve always been ‘crafty’ and had worked with fiber using crochet and knitting, but I only recently (re)discovered macrame, the 13th century form of textile using knotting techniques. Laudenschlager is drawn to unusual or one-of-a-kind decor, which is

Robert Christy

Robert Christy has been a full-time artist for 30 years, traveling and painting throughout the American West and Midwest. He has painted cityscapes from a rooftop in San Francisco, seascapes on Big Sur beaches, portraits of skinheads in Santa Cruz coffee houses and plein air landscapes throughout the Midwest and Southwest. In Chicago, he produced works that reflected pop-art and folk art interests there. In Wisconsin, he concentrated on Lake Superior plein air works. Christy currently lives and works out of Northfield and enjoys painting en plein air along the Riverwalk with all its textures and angles, and capturing seasons of the nearby Minnesota countryside, This spring, he contributed several funny whirligig-style toys (“Famous Artist: Andy Warhol”, “Flop”, “City of the Future”) to a show in San Diego, California.

Lauren Jacobson is a mixedmedia artist with a focus on digital photography. Her passion for portraits and surrealism is reflected in her work. She captures a unique perspective by utilizing fascinating subjects, experimental techniques and digital alterations. Her work varies dramatically – from exotic sea life to theatrical self-portraits to breathtaking native wildlife. Fred Somers oil and pastel paintings have received numerous awards over the last 40 years. He has been honored as one of the first two Eminent Pastelists by the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS). Matthew Bunch Dr. Jellyfish Studios

Matthew Bunch is founder and owner of Dr. Jellyfish Studios. He’s known for his surrealist/ dreamlike art. Every piece he creates is also a surprising 3D experience when viewed with 3D glasses. His art is meant to spark conversation for its amazing color, hidden symbols and, optionally, for its 3D experience. Bunch loves the interplay of color that creates the 3D effect, which he achieves using only Prisma color pencils and Microns ink pens. He uses color pencils with such brilliance that his colors look like oils. He prefers to use only pencils and ink out of respect and adoration for artists of the past, and in order to create his art without the use of modern technology. Bunch’s latest works focus on patterns and colors, but he has a passion for nature and animals, which often influences his choice of subject. Additionally he creates album art for several bands, posters for music festivals and other commissioned pieces including logos, tattoo designs, murals and portraits.

Curtis Ingvoldstad, chainsaw carver, has been an artist his entire life. “I want to walk up to a piece of wood and start immediately, without really much of a plan. I just want to bring something out of myself. “Indian mystics believe that our words come from inside us. They’ve always been there, we just have to learn how to bring them out. When I’m working, I don’t really even think about anything, I just work. Erica Ness

Erica Ness is the founder of Wool-ENDesign and creates fiber artworks using natural fibers including felted wools, silks and leathers. Her artworks are primarily functional pieces like scarves, hats, purses and other clothing, but also include wool paintings. Her bright colors and fluid designs are inspired by nature. Oftentimes looking to flowers, insects and the sky for inspiration, her pieces embrace the beauty and diversity of nature. Kathy Ness started the Boomerang Bag project at the Northfield Public Library to replace plastic bags they were offering with reusable fabric bags. The idea came out of Australia – use donated fabric and volunteer sewers to make the bags – all to keep unwanted fabric out of landfills and reduce the need for single-use plastic bags. Thanks to the Clothes Closet and Bierman’s Furniture store donating used upholstery and discontinued upholstery samples, Ness is able to create unique, beautiful and tough bags. Ness also makes more complicated bags: lined, magnetic closures, with pockets and other enhancements. She also makes small travel bags and silverware-andplacemats-in-one (for people to bring their own silverware instead of using plastic ware at picnics and such). See more:

Mary Ellen Frame

Mary Ellen Frame has created a traveling photography exhibit titled “Seeing Our Cannon River Watershed,” with the assistance of a grant from the Southeast Minnesota Arts Council (SEMAC). The exhibit of photos of the Cannon River, its tributaries, human interaction and wildlife will be shown at a variety of venues within the watershed. Frame has a long connection to the river having grown up on a farm in Waterford Township about half a mile from it and now living five blocks from it.

Frame would like to stimulate the viewer’s powers of observation, whether it’s the joy of focusing for a moment on ordinary beauty, or seeing the stories and connection the visual world presents. Christie Clarke

Christie Clarke is an artist and educator living and working in Northfield. After having been a full-time functional potter, she left the wheel for the challenges of hand building with various clay bodies. Her slab-built low-fire clay vessels and boxes are part of a continuing experiment in creating simple objects that have a timeless look, both ancient and modern. She is interested in revealing texture and color in multiple layers with dry and matte-glazed surfaces. Her work can be found in local shops and in the collection of the Goldstein Museum of Design at the University of Minnesota and in a two-year display of Minnesota Women Ceramic Artists at the Humphrey Terminal at MSP airport. Dale Brown

Dale Brown is a Studio Assistant in the Art Department at Normandale College, working in fused glass, photography and printmaking areas. He also manages the darkroom and digital art computer lab and assists students in various photography and electronic imaging classes. He teaches fused glass classes out of his home studio in Northfield, at Paradise Center for the Arts in Faribault and at Northfield Arts Guild. Brown has been experimenting with glass for more than 15 years. He uses bold, vibrant colors while working on new techniques such as making pattern flow bars, wire melts and murine. After the initial firing, he cuts new glass pieces with a wet saw, cold works them and then uses them as design elements in new pieces. With photography, Brown enjoys getting out in nature, slowing down and exploring a scene from different angles while using different techniques. He has a particular interest in night photography and the northern lights and has captured scenic images of the Northern night skies from Duluth to the Canadian border.

Donna Johnson & Lyn Rein

This artistic duo has been a lifetime in the making. Mother and daughter team Donna Johnson and Lyn Rein have been creating art inspired by their Norwegian heritage since Lyn was a child, but Donna herself began rosemaling with her mother, Bernice, when they lived in South Dakota in the 1970s. Recently, one of Lyn’s rosemaled baskets won Best of Show at the Wisconsin State Rosemaling Associations annual show, adding another award to the family’s pile of accolades.

This year Lyn and Donna will be newly featured at the South Central Minnesota Studio ARTour. Donna is going to be rosemaling on a variety of items both large and small, from furniture pieces to Christmas tree ornaments. Lyn also makes pottery inspired by Norwegian traditions. These functional pots include Norwegian-style ale bowls featuring Norwegian sayings and blessings as well as rosemaling-inspired carving. The Sod Wedges of Nirthfolde

The Nirthfolde Visitors’ Bureau (Nirthfolde is, a small municipality situated in a parallel universe that neatly overlaps Northfield, Minnesota) invites everyone to get outside and enjoy the summer by participating in selfguided tours of the Sod Wedges of Nirthfolde.

The aesthetic by-products of an ambitious municipal pedestrian project, the Sod Wedges of Nirthfolde are a network of minimalist earthworks strategically situated for the consideration of passersby. Each wedge is the aesthetic linchpin, the keystone of its quadrant. There are 89 documented and authenticated sod wedges in the Central Nirthfolde District – 14 on the west side and 62 on the east side. The Nirthfolde Visitor’s Bureau Project is spearheaded by founder and self-appointed curator David Lefkowitz and a small staff of collaborators, chief among them fellow Nirthfudlian and multi-arts practitioner Doug Bratland. Bonnie Gunelius

Sharp lines and bright colors make it hard to miss or ignore Bonnie Gunelius’ startling designs. Drawing inspiration from her travels, geometric shapes of flowers and her internal artistic dialogue, she uses pen and pencil, markers and glazes to convey ideas and emotion from viewers. In the last year Gunelius has taken up painting on tiles in addition to her work in pen and ink. Gunelius’ work has been made into handbags, frameable art and purses. This year she will be participating in the South Central Minnesota Studio ARTour for the first time.

Tami Resler

In October of 2018, Tami Resler received a grant to build a raku kiln from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council (SEMAC). She immersed herself in learning all she could to make the project a success. “Every day after work I come home and put on my ‘artist hat,’” she says. “It’s one thing to use a raku kiln that’s already existing and tested. It’s quite another to build one yourself.”

The capstone event of the grant is a gallery show at Paradise Center for the Arts in Faribault which coincides with the 2019 Studio ARTour. The show consists of pieces she made in her studio, glazed and fired in the new kiln. “Many of the sculptures are made up of multiple pieces that will hang on fiberglass supports. So not only am I building the kiln and the pottery, but also the fiberglass bodies.” She uses the word “bodies” literally, as many depict women’s bodies, which will be pieced together and hung on the fiberglass. Pat Jarrett is inspired by her garden. Geraniums that sit in front of her house seem to have painted themselves onto watering cans on her kitchen shelves. What the actual cluck? is right! June was one heck of a great month and seems to have flown by like a chicken with a fox in the henhouse. The highlight for me was a wonderful 60th birthday backyard Shangri-La with live music by Dan Israel & Mike Lane! About 40 guests attended, including my cousin Monica who drove from Virginia Beach (where I once lived for 14 years of my Navy career, rotating from ship to shore), and my middle daughter Kelly, who flew in from Georgia (where she is inches away from getting her PhD from OSU). The crowd was a wonderful mix of family and friends, high school pals, college buddies, artists, photographers, musicians, co-workers, fellow activists, old church friends, and old family friends – from age 8 to 70. I loved every minute of it. What the actual birthday? Though my 60th birthday was in April, I chose to celebrate in June as I really wanted an outdoor soirée. We have a huge and beautiful yard replete with planters full of foliage befitting a tropical paradise! From ficus trees to bright flowers, it’s a virtual vacation spot wrapped around my house. What next? Getting back to my creative writing studies now that my art studio is fully redecorated and organized, wrapping up a couple of mural painting gigs in Minneapolis, a few freelance writing and design projects! Plus preparing for a couple of weekends upVoted at theBest cabin, and a Music vacation week in the Stillwater area! That’s what!
