Ole & Lena at the State Fair

Aug. 10-11, 2pm Black Box Theatre, Ames Center, Burnsville It’s Ole’s favorite event of the year – the State Fair. Lena doesn’t share Ole’s excitement. For years Lena has been in countless competitions with her archrival Elaine, always battling, only to end up with a tie for the coveted blue ribbons. This year Lena has a new trick up her sleeve that she’s sure will tip the balance in her favor. Ole, on the other hand, has his own Fair surprise this year. Ole heard that Sweet Martha makes a truckload of money at the Fair, so Ole and Sven have decided they’re going to turn the Fair into a money-making operation with a food stand of their own. But when it comes time to leave for the Fair, Lena is nowhere to be found. Can Ole find Lena in time to spring her surprise on archnemesis Elaine? Tickets: $20, available at the Ames Center Box Office, 800/982-2787 or ticketmaster.com.

Pirates of Penzance

by Felicia Crosby

If you haven’t gotten a chance to see the Northfield Arts Guild’s Pirates of Penzance yet, fear ye not; the show runs through the first week of August, and it’s a treat for the whole family. Directed by Bob Gregory-Bjorkland, this Gilbert and Sullivan classic boasts beautiful young lovers, inept cops, orphan pirates and a wonderfully whimsical modern Major General. The songs are contagious, and the talent’s outrageous. It’s a really great show. Aug. 4-6 at Arcadia Charter School. For more information and tickets, call 507/645-8877 or go to northfieldartsguild.org/theater.

Bridge Chamber Music Festival

This iconic Northfield-based treasure celebrates its 19th season, and this year the music travels from 1920’s Paris to early mid-century America to “a Russian spectacular.” Come to any or all of the concerts, performed by various groups at various venues in Northfield, and let yourself be swept away to another time, another place. The performances run selected evenings from Aug. 17 through Aug. 27. For more information, go to bridgechamberfestival.org.

Dakota County Fair

The fair season continues, and from Aug. 7 to 13, it’s Dakota County’s turn to shine. A tradition since 1858, this glorious family event – and one of the oldest county fairs in the state – offers both a contemporary and a historical window into the world of Minnesota farm life. From a restored 1900-era village complete with costumed interpreters to the mechanical squeals from the midway rides, this is the stuff summer memories are made of. For more information, go to dakotacountyfair.org. Make sure to save room for the cheese curds.

Blue Collar BBQ Arts Fest

Southern Minnesota’s biggest block party? If thousands of people gathering in downtown Faribault for live music, games and a barbeque competition are any indication, the answer is a resounding “yes!” Join the party on Saturday, Aug. 12 at the annual Blue Collar BBQ and Arts Festival, presented by the Paradise Center for the Arts and held on the 200-300 block of Central Avenue from 11am-11pm. This free event includes 11 hours of music, a beer garden, a home-brew contest, kids activities, food vendors and more. For tickets and more information, call 507/332-7372 or go to paradisecenterforthearts.org.

Gold Rush Days

It’s time to grab some comfortable shoes and hone your bargain-hunter’s instinct; the 45th annual Downtown Oronoco Gold Rush Days Antique Show and Market comes to town Aug. 18-20 and promises a wealth of great finds. Considered by Country Woman magazine to be one of the top must-attend antique shows in the country, this free event is chockablock with presentations, food and games, thousands of booths and more than 100 dealers. It’s a good bet to say there’ll be something for everyone. For more information, call 507/367-2111 or go to goldrushmn.com.

Kenyon Rose Fest

Little Kenyon pulls out all the stops with its annual Kenyon Rose Fest, held this year from Aug. 18 to 20, in downtown Kenyon. This family friendly weekend event includes city-wide garage sales, a kids’ pedal tractor pull, parade, pool party, golf tournament and an all-ages Saturday night street dance. And, seriously, that’s just a sampling. For more information and the full list of events, go to facebook.com/kenyonrosefest.

There are, among us, those who can tell a story. Who have the power to sweep us out of our seats and into a different world, if but for an hour or two. Who delight and entertain; who warm the coldest winter nights and thrill us under the summer stars. We present a taste on the following pages, with love and admiration, of the performers, directors, writers and designers who enrich the fabric of our communities with their talent.

Bravo to you, the performing artists – and thanks for making us smile.

the Merlin Players

The Ames Center

The Merlin Players have been entertaining and thrilling audiences for 23 years. The theater company’s home is the Paradise Center for the Arts in Faribault. Artistic Director Julianna Skluzacek has led the group since its beginnings. Love Letters, Barefoot in the Park and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee will make up the 2017-18 season. themerlinplayers.org @MerlinPlayers

Northfield Dance Academy Mission statement: To instill confidence, self-discipline and sense of achievement by providing a quality dance education in an encouraging, uplifting environment. Northfield Dance Academy, directed by Daphne McCoy, is a performance-based, non-competition studio. NDA’s faculty holds bachelors and graduate degrees in dance and theater. They believe that dance is an art and a discipline that can expand a person’s horizons. The discipline that dance can instill on a child’s life is in itself a reward. It doesn’t matter whether that child grows up to become a professional dancer/performer, the discipline of dance will stay with a child forever. The ability to be creative with the body is invaluable to children growing up in a post-modern world of digital lives. To have access to an outlet of physical creativity is more important now than ever. NDA offers preschool, school age and adult programs including a Dance Ability class for people of all ages who have mobility issues. NDA also presents an annual Summer Dance Theatre performance. This year’s fall production is Peter and the Wolf and NDA’s 20172018 theme is “A Night at the Museum,” where dance pieces will be inspired by works of art. Next summer’s Dance Theatre project will be The Lorax.

Lindsey Mornson holds a Bachelor of Arts in Dance and Sociology/Anthropology from St. Olaf College. She began her dance training at Dance Endeavors in Bloomington and attended Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan as a member of their ballet ensemble. In addition to performing, Mornson recently co-directed and choreographed She Looks, a cabaret created in collaboration with the Emily Program Foundation. She brings experience in tap, jazz, ballet, pointe, contemporary and modern.

She has been cast in modern, tap and ballet duets at Northfield Dance Academy as well as the roles of the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland, The Scarecrow in Wizard of Oz and Peter in Peter Pan. She played the role of a spirit in the Northfield Arts Guild production of The Tempest.

Addison Molesky

This will be Molesky’s second year as a Teacher’s Assistant. Molesky dances pointe, tap, jazz, modern and music theater.
