If you haven’t gotten a chance to see the Northfield Arts Guild’s Pirates of Penzance yet, fear ye not; the show runs through the first week of August, and it’s a treat for the whole family. Directed by Bob Gregory-Bjorkland, this Gilbert and Sullivan classic boasts beautiful young lovers, inept cops, orphan pirates and a wonderfully whimsical modern Major General. The songs are contagious, and the talent’s outrageous. It’s a really great show. Aug. 4-6 at Arcadia Charter School. Bridge Chamber Music Festival

Cannon River Winery, Cannon Falls Mallory Graham and Scott Tyler formed The Rough & Tumble in 2011. In 2015, the couple sold everything they couldn’t store in boxes small enough to fit in Graham’s sister’s spare closet, quit their day jobs, admitted they were in love and bought a camper to venture on the open road, playing shows nationwide. They’ve been out there ever since. Before their second full year on the road, The Rough & Tumble released Pieces and Pieces, a soundtrack written for the Alyssa Pearson short film (expected soon) dually named. The Contented Cow, Northfield Minneapolis based singer/songwriter Jim Pellinger has performed at colleges, clubs and festivals from the upper Midwest to Central America. He has played solo and with bands, in large outdoor venues and tiny coffeehouses, to big crowds and small gatherings. He’s stood on stages and tabletops, under the lights and in dimly lit corners, in large cities, small towns, a couple of state fairs and one beauty pageant. He’s played four-hour shows single-handedly and traded half-hour sets at a weekly house gig at a bar in Guatemala City with “some guy named Luis, who sang songs like My Way in Spanish. The pay was 15 quetzales and all the Gallo beer I could drink.” Pellinger’s songwriting bears the mark of a variety of influences such as Lennon & McCartney, Bob Marley, Elvis Costello, Squeeze, even Hank Williams.

Whether recording jingles, producing shows, composing and arranging, or singing as a solo artist and with big bands, Walesch is known for his unique approach to The Great American Songbook. He has sung and played on the stage of The Bluebird Café in Nashville and the legendary Chicago Theater and has appeared on the nationally syndicated broadcast Mountain Stage on NPR. Their music is influenced by life experiences of Native people. Weston states that “Native people have experienced the blues, too… All the pain we’ve endured from massacres, boarding schools and forced removal from our homes, etc… all attempts to erase our culture and our people. Tanzenwald Brewing Co, Northfield Minneapolis-based singer/songwriter Jim Pellinger has performed at colleges, clubs and festivals from the upper Midwest to Central America. He has played solo and with bands, in large outdoor venues and tiny coffeehouses, to big crowds and small gatherings. He’s stood on stages and tabletops, under the lights and in dimly lit corners, in large cities, small towns, a couple of state fairs and one beauty pageant. He’s played four-hour shows single-handedly and traded half-hour sets at a weekly house gig at a bar in Guatemala City with “some guy named Luis, who sang songs like ‘My Way’ in Spanish. The pay was 15 quetzales and all the Gallo beer I could drink.” Pellinger’s songwriting bears the mark of a variety of influences such as Lennon & McCartney, Bob Marley, Elvis Costello, Squeeze, even Hank Williams. Northfield Dance Academy Mission statement: To instill confidence, self-discipline and sense of achievement by providing a quality dance education in an encouraging, uplifting environment. Northfield Dance Academy, directed by Daphne McCoy, is a performance-based, non-competition studio. NDA’s faculty holds bachelors and graduate degrees in dance and theater. They believe that dance is an art and a discipline that can expand a person’s horizons. The discipline that dance can instill on a child’s life is in itself a reward. It doesn’t matter whether that child grows up to become a professional dancer/performer, the discipline of dance will stay with a child forever. The ability to be creative with the body is invaluable to children growing up in a post-modern world of digital lives. To have access to an outlet of physical creativity is more important now than ever. NDA offers preschool, school age and adult programs including a Dance Ability class for people of all ages who have mobility issues. NDA also presents an annual Summer Dance Theatre performance. This year’s fall production is Peter and the Wolf and NDA’s 20172018 theme is “A Night at the Museum,” where dance pieces will be inspired by works of art. Next summer’s Dance Theatre project will be The Lorax.

Faculty at Northfield Dance Academy: Lindsey Mornson

Lindsey Mornson holds a Bachelor of Arts in Dance and Sociology/Anthropology from St. Olaf College. She began her dance training at Dance Endeavors in Bloomington and attended Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan as a member of their ballet ensemble. In addition to performing, Mornson recently co-directed and choreographed She Looks, a cabaret created in collaboration with the Emily Program Foundation. She brings experience in tap, jazz, ballet, pointe, contemporary and modern.

Harper Bechtel

Harper Bechtel will be a sophomore at Northfield High School and has been dancing most of her life. This is her third year teaching at NDA. Bechtel’s dance resume includes NDA roles dancing Peter in Peter and the Wolf, Le Elephante in Carnivale of the Animals, January Stars soloist in The Four Seasons and a guest artist soloist in A Bevy of B’s. Harper was in the production of A Christmas Carol at the Northfield Arts Guild and Tiger Lily in Peter Pan – the Ballet.

Carson Bechtel (Class assistant)

Carson Bechtel will be a 7th grader at Northfield Middle School this year. She has been dancing since she was born – this is her third year as a teacher’s assistant. She has been cast in modern, tap and ballet duets at Northfield Dance Academy as well as the roles of the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland, The Scarecrow in Wizard of Oz and Peter in Peter Pan. She played the role of a spirit in the Northfield Arts Guild production of The Tempest.

Addison Molesky

(Class assistant) Addie Molesky is a rising 8th grader at Northfield Middle School. She has been dancing with NDA since she was four years old. This will be Molesky’s second year as a Teacher’s Assistant. Molesky dances pointe, tap, jazz, modern and music theater. She has performed in NDA productions as the Duck in Peter and the Wolf, the White Rabbit in Alice in Wonderland, Glinda in Wizard of Oz and Wendy in Peter Pan – The Ballet along with many duets and trios in her dance career.

A unique and intimate venue, the Northfield Arts Guild Theater seats 118 and is located at 411 Third St. W in Northfield. Paradise Center for the Arts Paradise Center for the Arts in historic downtown Faribault is a beautifully restored facility built on the original foundation of the 1885 Grand Opera House, which was completely destroyed by fire in 1929 and rebuilt in 1930. After years of operation as a movie theater, and then several years of vacancy and decay, the community rallied to restore this magnificent jewel in 2006 to include art galleries, classrooms, clay and textile labs, a gift shop and rehearsal spaces, in addition to a 300-seat auditorium. The Paradise presents 4050 live music, live theater and variety acts per year. It is home to the Paradise Community Theatre and The Merlin Players. Vetter Stone Amphitheater On the banks of the Minnesota River, The Vetter Stone Amphitheater in Riverfront Park, Mankato, is the perfect venue for outdoor, summer festivities and is home to the popular local festival, RibFest, which is in its 20th year and attracts more than 25,000 people annually. The Vetter Stone Company has donated more than 1,500 tons of Minnesota Stone, creating the unique and natural looking amphitheater. Opened in 2010, the Vetter Stone Amphitheater has been host to many well-known, accredited musical artists such as Willie Nelson, Trampled by Turtles, Old Crow Medicine Show, Nelly, Jason Isbell, George Thorogood, Cheap Trick, Pat Benatar and Merle Haggard.
