HAPPENINGS Saturday, July 28, continued Jack & Kitty • 9-11pm

The Contented Cow, Northfield Kitty’s uncle is Bunny Wailer of Bob Marley and the Wailers fame, so music is literally in her blood. She grew up listening to a healthy blend of reggae, rap and R&B. At a young age Jack discovered his vaudevillian great-grandfather’s phonograph record collection and spent his childhood listening to cats like Bing Crosby, Al Jolson and Rudy Vallee. As fate would have it, oddball ukulele legend Tiny Tim moved in next door and became Jack’s babysitter. That rich musical stew forms the blend of Jack and Kitty’s Emmy Award-winning artistic approach. It’s organic and acoustic with nothing but positive vibes. Laid-back music steeped in tradition with one foot firmly in the future, they call their style “organic vaudeville folk.” SUNDAY, JULY 29 Owatonna Art Center Pancake Breakfast • 8am-12pm

Their music is influenced by life experiences of Native people. Weston states that “Native people have experienced the blues, too. For us it reflects a significant part of life for Native people and our relationship with the U.S. government in the past, present and future. All the pain we’ve endured from massacres, boarding schools and forced removal from our homes, etc… all attempts to erase our culture and our people. We are still here. Our music celebrates life, the good and bad.” The band has performed across the U.S. in support of their original recordings and has fronted notable blues acts including: The Robert Cray Band, Indigenous, Los Lonely Boys, Corey Stevens, John Mayall, Kenny Neal Band, Lil Ed and the Blues Imperials, Coco Montoya, Ana Popovic, Walter Trout, Shannon Curfman and the Jerry Garcia Band.

Jeff White • 2-5pm

Cannon River Winery, Cannon Falls Alt-country from the hills of western Wisconsin. Blending warm tones, reverbs, delays and vibrato with an outlaw grit, Jeff White sings of love, loss and lust with an Americana vibe, channeling the melancholy country/western and dark folk music from times past. White began honing his songwriting skills working the red-eye shift as a taxi driver. Railroad conductors, heartbroken men and women after bar close and wild out-of-towners were frequent riders who freely opened up about their personal lives. Their late-night conversations were inspirations. White has toured the lower 48 from coast to coast as well as England, Scotland and Wales. Much in the vein of Johnny Cash, White writes and sings his own songs but also performs unique interpretations of other songs he admires. He has six albums under his belt, one with Charlie Parr and international folk music legend, Greg Brown. His latest CD, Renegade Revelations, recently received a four-star rating in The Netherlands on the alt-country review website, altcountry.nl. Nikki Walsh • 3-6pm

Tanzenwald Brewing Co., Northfield Nikki Walsh combines the vocal precision of jazz singing with the warmth and intimacy of folk. Sunday Jazz Jam • 4-5:30pm

Charts will be provided for everyone to follow along. It’s a spiritual experience. More at hotspotmusic.org. Todd Thompson Band • 4-6pm

The Contented Cow, Northfield Americana music at its best – blues, bluegrass, Cajun, country and pop. This four-piece string band brings hot instrumentals and soulful vocals, featuring Nick Weaver on guitar, Bruce Jensen on string bass, Max Weaver on banjo and Todd Thompson on mandolin. Classic covers, great originals and bad jokes.

Jack & Kitty • 5-8pm

Imminent Brewing, Northfield Kitty’s uncle is Bunny Wailer of Bob Marley and the Wailers fame, so music is literally in her blood. Laid-back music steeped in tradition with one foot firmly in the future, they call their style “organic vaudeville folk.”

The Contented Cow, Northfield General knowledge with a twist. $1/person entry fee is matched by the Cow with all money donated to a local charity (chosen and changed monthly). Receipts posted in pub or online. This month’s charity is Autism Society of Minnesota. MONDAY, AUGUST 13 Bingo • 7pm

A.R. Gurney’s

‘Love Letters’ Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner, both born to wealth and position, are childhood friends whose lifelong correspondence begins with birthday party thank-you notes and summer camp postcards. They continue to write letters, though each one takes a different path through life. Andy becomes a successful attorney, marries and is eventually elected to the U.S. Senate. Melissa dabbles in art and drinks more than she should and becomes estranged from her children. Eventually, Melissa and Andy become involved in a brief affair, but it is really too late for both of them. *Contains mature language and subject matter

A Timeless Love Story How did you find me...

chronicles a love story, and a family, 55 years in the making. Follow their journey through time, and experience the love, loss, fear, hope and joy. This is the first book from the four Minnesota authors.

Karen Vinar, Dennis Vinar, Jean Voxland, Andrew Voxland

Find this memoir at your local book store, Amazon.com, or our website www.howdidyoufindme.com

"But Grandma, where do you work? " I work here at RE/MAX Advantage Plus!" "But Grandma, what do you do here?" " I help people buy and sell homes." "But Grandma, why do you do that?" "But Grandma, when can we go to Hogan Brothers for ice cream?"

" I really enjoy helping people with their next moving adventure." "Right now! Rocky Road or Bubble gum?"

"Both, Grandma!"
