Crossings at Carnegie welcomes the acclaimed folk ensemble, the Tamburitzans, back to the State Theater in Zumbrota on Thursday, Aug. 9, and they promise an evening you won’t forget. Named after a stringed folk instrument, the tamburitza, these performing artists combine song and dance in celebration of the rich musical heritage of Armenia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Poland, Romania and Russia. Northfield’s very own KYMN Radio celebrates 50 years of news, entertainment and music with a block party on Friday, Aug. 3. Beginning at 5pm and running until 9pm, this free event features performances on the Showmobile stage by the Kalpullii Olin Agacaxtli Aztec Dancers, the Mexican Folklorico dance troupe, and music by the Rice County All Stars. Meet at Paradise 15 minutes before class and walk to a local garden to work outdoors. In case of rain, class will be inside. Paintings will be exhibited in the Second Floor Gallery until Aug. 29. The Contented Cow, Northfield Diggins’ original, eclectic style has evolved through a variety of projects from California to Minneapolis. The Contented Cow, Northfield A five-member blues/rock band out of Minneapolis formed in 2001 by Joni Weston and Eric Buffalohead, Bluedog has released several albums and singles which have been nominated for Best Blues Recording for the Native American Music Awards and the Indian Summer Music Awards. Their music is influenced by life experiences of Native people. Weston states that “Native people have experienced the blues, too. For us it reflects a significant part of life for Native people and our relationship with the U.S. government in the past, present and future. All the pain we’ve endured from massacres, boarding schools and forced removal from our homes, etc… all attempts to erase our culture and our people. We are still here. White began honing his songwriting skills working the red-eye shift as a taxi driver. Railroad conductors, heartbroken men and women after bar close and wild out-of-towners were frequent riders who freely opened up about their personal lives. Their late-night conversations were inspirations. White has toured the lower 48 from coast to coast as well as England, Scotland and Wales. Much in the vein of Johnny Cash, White writes and sings his own songs but also performs unique interpretations of other songs he admires. He has six albums under his belt, one with Charlie Parr and international folk music legend, Greg Brown.
