Fakler paints on a gessoed hardboard with thin, watered down layers of acrylic Fakler paint. Her subjects are domesticated animals that include cats, dogs and farm animals. This exhibit features work created after visits to Southeast Minnesota farms. Truax combines traditional ceramic and found natural materials: “We Truax think of nature as untouched and wild,” she says, “and not something controlled or created by humans. Through my work I attempt to create a sense of connection to nature in the viewer, yet through the utilization of abstraction avoid direct connections to specific places.” Watson Watson uses colored pencil in his exploration and execution of secular and spiritual themes. His “regimented rectangles” or “color-on, color-off writing,” drawing technique expands on the already liberating notions of drawing – despite this regimentation. K-9 5K for Believet
Defeat of Jesse James Days
Come one, come all to the event that’s put Northfield on the map since 1876. The internationally renowned Defeat of Jesse James Days returns to the scene of the crime committed by the infamous James-Younger Gang for five days beginning Sept. 6, and promises enough activity and celebration to make Frank and Jesse wish they’d stayed around a while longer. From daily re-enactments with costumed actors to carnivals, rodeos, vintage base ball and an abundance of art, this annual celebration draws tens of thousands and has something for everyone. For more information, including an events schedule, visit djjd.org or see page 8.
Fossum Farm Days
Attracted to alpacas? Whether you’re a breeder, a weaver or just fascinated by these lovely, loopy, slightly Dr. Seussian-looking creatures, you’re bound to enjoy celebrating National Alpaca Farm Days at the Fossum Family Farm, just outside Northfield. Held on Sept. 23 and 24 from 10am to 5pm, this annual family friendly event features live music, a petting zoo, the fabulous Fossum farm store, information on raising alpacas, and the sheer delight of watching the little crias (that’s a baby alpaca to you and me) cavort in the fields. The event is free; for more information go to the-alpaca-farm-store.com or check out the details on Facebook.

Their mission is to provide highly skilled assistance dogs, free of charge, to disabled veterans. Participants must be registered by Sept. 2. Valley Grove Preservation Society Social If you’re looking for a quick break from life’s stressors – and these days, who isn’t? – take a deep breath and a step or ten back, and join the good folks at the Valley Grove Preservation Society Social. This annual event, held at the historic Valley Grove Church in bucolic Nerstrand on Saturday, Sept. 17, provides a veritable cornucopia of old-time pleasures from horse-drawn wagon rides to traditional Scandinavian tunes courtesy of Hütenänny. Additional treats include “An Hour with Al,” where former Minnesota Governor Al Quie will share his memories of growing up – 90 years ago! – on this beautiful, and still largely untouched, corner of the prairie. The social runs from 1 to 4 pm; for more information go to valleygrovemn.org, or check out their Facebook page.

Tavern Lounge, Northfield Minneapolis-based singer/songwriter Jim Pellinger has performed at colleges, clubs and festivals from the Upper Midwest to Central America. He has played solo and with bands, in large outdoor venues and tiny coffeehouses, to big crowds and small gatherings. He’s stood on stages and tabletops, under lights and in dimly lit corners, in large cities, small towns, a couple of state fairs and one beauty pageant. He’s played four-hour shows single-handedly and traded half-hour sets at a weekly house gig at a bar in Guatemala City with “some guy named Luis, who sang songs like My Way in Spanish. The pay was 15 quetzales and all the Gallo beer I could drink.” Pellinger’s songwriting bears the mark of a variety of influences including Lennon & McCartney, Bob Marley, Elvis Costello, Squeeze and Hank Williams. HAPPENINGS Thursday, September 14, continued Acoustic Roots Music Series: The New Standards • 7:30pm
Newhall Auditorium, Shattuck-St. Mary’s, Faribault Twin Cities musicians and raconteurs Chan Poling (The Suburbs) on piano, bassist John Munson (Trip Shakespeare, Semisonic) and Steve Roehm (Billygoat, Electropolis) on vibraphone formed The New Standards in 2005 to play and sing their favorite songs in a stripped-down, acoustic setting. Just as mid-century American jazz musicians reimagined “old standards,” the trio creates jazz arrangements of recognizable hits and deep tracks alike, drawn from diverse musical genres ranging from pop, glam and soul, to rock and roll, including songs from Dan Hicks to David Byrne, Bowie to Beck. Their music makes room for solos and arrangements with the freedom of jazz, and yet never fully abandons the modest soul of pop and rock. Their Twin Cities shows sell out fast. Tickets: $20 adults, $12 students, available at 507/333-1620. The Wrong Omar • 8pm

HAPPENINGS Friday, September 22, continued Jack & Kitty • 8-11pm
The Contented Cow, Northfield Kitty’s uncle is Bunny Wailer of Bob Marley and the Wailers fame, so music is literally in her blood. She grew up listening to a healthy blend of reggae, rap and R&B. At a young age Jack discovered his vaudevillian great grandfather’s phonograph record collection and spent his childhood listening to cats like Bing Crosby, Al Jolson and Rudy Vallee. As fate would have it, oddball ukulele legend Tiny Tim moved in next door and became Jack’s babysitter. That rich musical stew forms the blend of Jack and Kitty’s Emmy Award-winning artistic approach. It’s organic and acoustic with nothing but positive vibes. Laid-back music steeped in tradition with one foot firmly in the future, they call their style “organic vaudeville folk.” M8Ds • 9:30pm-close
