Sept. 30, 7:30pm Northfield Arts Guild Theater The Northfield Arts Guild, Content Books and Northfield Poet Laureate host this capstone event for the Northfield Poetry Festival. This one-man show performed by Patrick Scully shows aspects of Walt Whitman’s life and work, revealing relationships between men during Whitman’s era. Scully says, “I believe there would be no marriage equality in the U.S. today if Whitman hadn’t first written Leaves of Grass in 1855. This show celebrates that, making historical connections from the past to our present, and provides sustenance for battles that still remain.” This show is appropriate for high school age and above. Tickets will not be sold, but a free-will offering will be accepted. See this show before it plays at the Guthrie Theater next summer. More info at northfieldartsguild.org or 507/645-8877.

Lucy Wainwright Roche at the Crossings
By Felicia Crosby Defeat of Jesse James Days
Come one, come all to the event that’s put Northfield on the map since 1876. The internationallyrenowned Defeat of Jesse James Days returns to the scene of the crime committed by the infamous James-Younger Gang for four days beginning Sept. 5, and promises enough activity and celebration to make Frank and Jesse wish they’d stayed around a while longer. From daily re-enactments with costumed actors to carnivals, rodeos, vintage baseball and an abundance of art, this annual celebration draws tens of thousands and has something for everyone. For more information and to download the PDF events schedule, visit djjd.org. Artwork by Littles from Big Brothers, Big Sisters
Friendship, mentorship, art. These are the themes behind the art collaborations between the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Southern Minnesota and their young friends, in an exhibit called Artwork by Littles at the Owatonna Arts Center. The show opens Sept. 2 and runs through Sept. 26, with a reception from 1 to 5pm on Sept. 9. The power of art to heal is well documented, the power it has to forge friendships is life changing, and the results here are beautiful. For more information, go to oacarts.org or call 507/451-0533.
september 2018
What a pedigree. The daughter of Louden Wainwright III and Suzzy Roche, the half sister of Martha and Rufus and the niece of Sloan Wainwright, it’s easy to see that Lucy Wainwright Roche has music in her DNA. She’s also got a crystal clear voice reminiscent of Joni Mitchell and Patti Griffith, and a straightforward and funny stage presence that’s all her own. Join her for one night at the Crossings at Carnegie in Zumbrota on Sept. 7, and hear tunes from her soon-tobe-released album Little Beast. Show starts at 7:30pm; for more information, go to crossingsatcarnegie.com or call 507/732-7616. Dr. Falstaff and the Working Wives of Lake County: A Picnic Operetta
Edible opera? Indeed! Join the Mixed Precipitation Theater’s annual summer picnic operetta for Dr. Falstaff and the Working Wives of Lake County, a Minnesota-themed adaptation of The Merry Wives of Windsor, and follow the musical travails of a Lake Superior company town. Featuring the music of Bruce Springsteen and picnic bites made with the bounty of the Minnesota harvest, this is a treat for all senses. The show starts at 2pm on Sept. 15 at Memorial Park in Red Wing. For tickets and information, go to sheldontheater.org. Fossum Farm Days
Love alpacas? Whether you’re a breeder, a weaver or just a fan of these lovely, loopy, slightly Dr. Seussianlooking creatures, you’re bound to enjoy celebrating National Alpaca Farm Days at the Fossum Family Farm, just outside Northfield. Held on Sept. 29 and 30 from 10am to 5pm, this annual family-friendly event features silk painting, a petting zoo, the fabulous Alcapa Farm Store, information on raising alpacas, and the sheer delight of watching the little crias (that’s a baby alpaca to you and me) cavort in the fields. The event is free; for more information, go to the-alpaca-farm-store.com or call 507/645-0365.

Get The Led Out • 8pm
Ames Center, Burnsville From the bombastic and epic to the folksy and mystical, Get The Led Out (GTLO), dubbed “The American Led Zeppelin,” have captured the essence of the recorded music of Led Zeppelin and brought it to the concert stage. The Philadelphia-based group consists of six veteran musicians intent on delivering Led Zeppelin live like you’ve never heard before. GTLO re-creates the songs in all their depth and glory with the studio overdubs that Zeppelin themselves never performed. When you hear three guitars on the album, GTLO delivers three guitarists on stage. No wigs or fake English accents, just a high-energy Zeppelin concert with an honest, heart-thumping intensity. Tickets: $30-$50, available at the Ames Center Box Office, 800/982-2787 or ticketmaster.com. Dan Israel • 8-11pm

His latest release, Dan, has drawn the biggest and best acclaim yet. No Depression calls Israel one of Minnesota’s most “notable folk rock bards” and American Songwriter magazine in Nashville calls Israel a “hometown hero who can pack a local venue to the gills,” describing his sound as “combining pop hooks with the rootsy orchestration of Neil Young’s slower material. Jack & Kitty • 7-9pm
The Contented Cow, Northfield Kitty’s uncle is Bunny Wailer of Bob Marley and the Wailers, so music is literally in her blood. She grew up listening to a healthy blend of reggae, rap and R&B. At a young age Jack discovered his vaudevillian great-grandfather’s phonograph record collection and spent his childhood listening to cats like Bing Crosby, Al Jolson and Rudy Vallee. As fate would have it, oddball ukulele legend Tiny Tim moved in next door and became Jack’s babysitter. That rich musical stew forms the blend of Jack and Kitty’s Emmy Award-winning artistic approach. It’s organic and acoustic with nothing but positive vibes. Laid-back music steeped in tradition with one foot firmly in the future, they call their style “organic vaudeville folk.” Jon Manners • 7-10pm

Paradise Center for the Arts, Faribault Jen Kober has energetically bounded onto the national stage bringing crowds to their feet with her original blend of stand-up, storytelling and improvised rock ‘n’ roll comedy. Her hard-hitting hour is phenomenally funny as Kober commands the stage and dares you not to laugh. Kober was the 2016 Winner of NPR’s Snap Judgment Comedic Performance of the Year for her Girl Scout Cookie story. Presented by Crossings at Carnegie at the Zumbrota State Theatre Jazz trio The New Standards riff off pop songs by Britney Spears, Adam Ant and Kurt Weill, allowing a little nuttiness into the show while staying serious about their musicianship. They aren’t a cover band, but operate more on the model of jazz bands in the ’50s and ’60s that utilized popular songs of the day to riff off of. Tickets: $22 advance, $26 at the door, available at Crossings, crossingsatcarnegie.com or 507/732-7616. Theater: Population 485 • 7:30pm
Northfield Arts Guild Theater See theater page. Paul Seeba • 8-11pm

Julyda • 3-6pm
Tanzenwald Brewing, Northfield A Minneapolis-based pop-rock band featuring Julida Alter on voice and cello and her husband, Sean Alter, on guitar, bass and percussion. Layered guitar intertwined with lush, cello lines support the intricate and honest vocals. Julyda is an additional project from the bigger six-member group, The Blacksmith’s Daughters. Their newest release, Do You Hear Me, is for the dreamer in all of us. The music reflects on love, disappointment, the monotony of life and the adventure that can be found within. Simply Fodder For Your Next Cocktail Party By Sherri Faye ©2018
Welcome Back Fodder: After a two-year hiatus from “Left Field” and “Simply Fodder…” I’m back in the saddle again. My stint in Florida was both enlightening and exhausting! Heat exhaustion that is… Florida is a “great place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there” (again), is an understatement in my book. You can have your gators, hurricanes, humidity, and 115 degrees in the so-called shade. I’ll take a nice day at the lake in gator-free fresh water, and winter, any day! Besides palm trees are overrated. Oh Minnesota, if I ever decide to move again, feel free to slap me upside the head. As I’ve mentioned in long-ago previous columns – I’ve lived on the east coast, west coast, and in the south. Sometimes complements of my US Navy career, and some just because I got a wild hair up my…. Indeed, I have had many wonderful experiences, and met some fantastically interesting people, but there’s merit to the ol’ saying “There’s no place like home.” You get a refresher course in appreciation when you live or spend extensive time in other parts of the world or country. We are so lucky to have the school system, economy, medical care, culture (the art and music scene here still kicks asp – that’s right, I said “asp”, as in snake – over so many other notably large sized cities), infrastructure and roads. Yep, that damn road construction is a blessing. Oh ye of little faith, thou dost caterwaul to such excess! As inconvenient as road construction is, after once again suffering catastrophically flooded roads, crater-sized potholes, and unfit drainage systems, I kneel in praise and kiss the streets that our tax dollars pay for.

‘Love Letters’ Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner, both born to wealth and position, are childhood friends whose lifelong correspondence begins with birthday party thank-you notes and summer camp postcards. They continue to write letters, though each one takes a different path through life. Andy becomes a successful attorney, marries and is eventually elected to the U.S. Senate. Melissa dabbles in art and drinks more than she should and becomes estranged from her children. Eventually, Melissa and Andy become involved in a brief affair, but it is really too late for both of them. *Contains mature language and subject matter
