Simply Fodder For Your Next Cocktail Party by Sherri Faye © 2015 EPISODE 79: NO BULL Starring: Conrad Pamplona, does that mean ‘insane’ in Spanish? Just wondering ~ The Contented, Collegiate Bull of Northfield ~ since this, their world renowned event is so wildly successful, After a lengthy hiatus training for the Running Of The Bulls though wrought with danger. It is celebrated as if it were a Conrad returns to Left Field... major holiday - attracting thousands of self-destructive, likely slightly mad, participants every year. The media attention is comparable to the Super Bowl. Having no desire to witness a goring, I don’t watch it, let alone join in the festivities. A bath in liquid nitrogen seems more pleasant. A suicide bombing mission appears safer. Okay, maybe not, but you get my point. It’s not that I avoid risk taking et al. I mean, I did join the Navy, and spent over 20 years serving. I did get married. Twice. A legalized form of gambling, if you ask me. Yet, I continue to date, even dipping my toe back in the toxic pool of an ex or two - guess I needed a reminder as to why I left ’em to begin with! I’ve had children. Now there’s a risk from beginning to end. Starting with pregnancy, through all the sleep deprivation, teen years, the times that they rebel, and hate you, the constant concern that plagues a parent, ending only when we finally croak. I’m even considering a little skydiving trip to London. And I recently opened a new art gallery! Clearly Rated OBNOXIOUS No bulls, humans, or elves were injured or traumatized I’m capable of risk-taking, just not involving the likelihood of impalement. “A ship is always safe at the shore - but that is NOT what it is built for.” ― Albert Einstein

Froggy has brought along a friend, a shy young man named Charlie who is overcome with fear at the thought of making conversation with strangers. So Froggy, before departing, tells all assembled that Charlie is from an exotic foreign country and speaks no English. Once alone, the fun really begins as Charlie overhears more than he should – the evil plans of a sinister two-faced minister and his redneck associate. Many other damaging revelations are made with the thought that Charlie doesn’t understand a word being said. But since Charlie does understand, it only fuels the nonstop hilarity and sets up the wildly funny climax in which things go uproariously awry for the “bad guys” and “good guys” emerge triumphant. The Best of Hank and Rita: A Barroom Operetta in One Act

Oct. 29, 8pm The Grand Event Center, Northfield Written, presented and performed by Joe Tougas and Ann Rosenquist Fee (The Frye), this is about the final show for a duo whose upbeat, love-drenched tunes hit a brief sweet spot in the 1970s. But that was 15 years and countless scandals ago, and tonight they’re in their smallest gig yet. A request sends them off the setlist and into songs requested of each other, songs of heartbreak, revenge, lust and hope. Music has kept them together this long, but as her goodbye letter awaiting him reads, “It’s only music, Hank. It’s only music.” Tougas performs as Hank along with Ann Rosenquist Fee as Rita. The show also features Madison, Wisc., standup comedian Dan Vierck as Danny Vee, Hank and Rita’s opening act. This show has been wowing audiences at sold-out venues around the state. Tavern Lounge, Northfield Acclaimed singer/songwriter Paul Seeba promotes his debut album, Mitchell Yards, which was recorded at Sparta Sound in Eveleth, MN and mastered by John Golden (Chris Isaak, John Hiatt). Its veins are full of Neil Young, Chuck Berry walking hand and hand.” Seeba’s songs involve catchy melodies, strong harmonies and the interplay of acoustic/electric guitar layers that definitely fall into a roots rock genre – with impressionistic lyrics that often weave together a narrative honoring our northern heritage. HAPPENINGS Fri, Oct. 16, cont. The Sensational Sleepers featuring Gary Rue in BEAT BOOM Radio! 7:30pm

Paradise Center for the Arts, Faribault British invasion is back and better than ever. In 1964, the Beatles opened up a floodgate of absolutely FAB music by groups such as the Yardbirds, The Animals, The Hollies, The Dave Clark Five, The Kinks, The Nashville Teens, The Rolling Stones, The Searchers, The Zombies and the list goes on. The Sleepers will perform songs from the “Beat Boom” movement (a term coined by the British press to try to stamp a style on all of this magnificent music-making), including We Gotta Get Outta This Place, You Really Got Me, Look Through Any Window, Heart Full of Soul, She’s Not There and Hippy Hippy Shake. The Sleepers give their audiences a rare opportunity to hear the songs that are so often overshadowed by the greatness of John, Paul, George and Ringo, and all impeccably performed. After being together for 50 years, The Sleepers continue to tour. Captain Gravitone & the String Theory Orchestra • 8-11pm

The Contented Cow, Northfield Americana folk rock infused with tango, jazz and circus monkeys. The group channels their angst-ridden superhero/philosopher, Captain Gravitone, whose super powers include time travel and gravity manipulation, combined with a relentless philosophical curiosity. With songs like Howl, What’s the Matter with Captain Gravitone?, Warm, Dark, Narcotic American Night, and I Want to BE a Philosophy Major, the group takes you on a musical adventure of cosmic proportion. Fun, sometimes moody, with humor, angst and internal reflection, the group is what you might expect if Tom Waits and Frank Zappa started a folk band. Hailing from St. Peter and Mankato, the group features Eli Hoehn on banjo, Jason Helder and Wayne Schmidt on guitars, vocalist Kelly Kroeker, percussionist Damen Price and bassist Kelly Coyle. Wonderful strange things.

Leanne Stremcha

Leanne Stremcha works from her home studio designing primarily silver jewelry using a fusion of traditional silver and silver metal clays. She brings a strong artistic sense and a background in fiber and horticulture to the confident pieces she designs. The metals she uses are recycled and her stones are domestically sourced from master stonecutters. The results are innovative and contemporary.

See more: ARTour Studio #13 (Oct. 16, 17 & 18)

Stremcha began her career working and teaching primarily in fiber. She taught adult community education for seven years and, during that time, studied quilting, garment construction, needle-woven beadwork, floral design and became a Master Gardener. She worked for 10 years at L and L Designs with business partner, Lori Schmidt. This cottage industry produced original design garments, bags, pillows and small quilts and sold them across the Upper Midwest at fine art fairs. For the last 12 years, Leanne has worked almost exclusively in silver. Her work combines contemporary, cultural and historic influences with the imaginative use of silver, gemstones and natural materials. Stremcha lives in a contemporary home south of Northfield with her husband, Jeff. Their large rambling garden is a dynamic work in progress.

Dale Brown Dale Brown’s passion for “kiln-formed” glass was ignited by a glass fusing class at Normandale College in 2007. He loves experimenting with advanced techniques (wire melts, pattern flow bars and Venetian cane) to create organic, flowing pieces of glass that can be used as design elements in other pieces. After the initial fusing, the glass is often cut up, coldworked, re-fused, and then slumped in a mold for the final shape. Brown teaches introductory glass fusing classes for adults and kids out of his studio in Northfield, and at local art centers including Paradise Center for the Arts in Faribault and the Northfield Arts Guild. His piece On The Edge Wire Melt was awarded first place at Brainerd Art in the Park (a juried show with 150 artists), July 2015. dalesfunkyglass@yahoo.com See more: dalesfunkyglass.webs.com

She has done extensive work using natural dyes for scarves, often incorporating Japanese shibori for design elements. She has modified techniques used for chemical dye applications to make new 2D work. Several of her pieces were recently exhibited throughout Southern Minnesota. “I create botanical installations that reflect on the relationships between humans and the natural world. Flowers and plants have a defined lifespan; they grow, bloom, fade and decompose. I am interested in the contrast between the transience of nature and beauty and the stability and permanence of fired ceramics. Also compelling to me are the boundaries between abstraction and botanical specificity; complexity and simplicity; two- and threedimensional; happenstance and control; and light and dark. I find the space between realms to be especially poignant, indecipherable and difficult to convey; the median strip between two clear paths is often the most contemplative and open-ended, both visually and conceptually.” The color, finish, design and placement of individual ceramic pieces are essential in evoking quiet and introspective narratives. In positioning some components post-firing, Shibata is able to take a more open-ended and intuitive approach when installing.

Doug Foxgrover Doug Foxgrover’s work combines the graphic design sensibilities of woodblock prints and various art styles with digital photography. Each piece is printed on paper, canvas or both. The confluence of new and old ideas, with modern and ancient production processes and various mediums, creates a gentle tension and desire to look deeper. As in all things, careful viewing/consideration reveals more than is immediately apparent.

Glynnis Lessing Glynnis Lessing is a potter who moved back to Northfield in 2012 after living in Chicago for 30 years, where she worked making and teaching ceramics. She first became interested in clay at age nine when she learned to throw from a Japanese potter visiting Carleton College. This began a lifelong love of ceramics. Her work is mainly functional porcelain with narrative images carved on the surface. She says: “I strive to make aesthetically pleasing yet highly functional pots that will find an intimate niche in the daily lives of the people who take them home.” Her studio is in her grandfather’s old milking parlor on the ancestral farm where she lives with her family, surrounded by their small flock of chickens, the trees her grandfather planted and the fertile earth. Ripka started learning how to draw from comic books while being inspired by Leonardo DaVinci, Rodin and Bob Ross. It’s an unusual mix, but it definitely set the groundwork for her style. She is drawn to three things when it comes to expressing herself: the female figure, human nature and experimenting with mediums.

“What ties us together, what is relatable...and what makes us stand alone within? Beauty within harsh lines, emotions through exaggeration of form and content, resolution from an unexpected interplay of ink, it’s all about forgetting the rules and, instead, letting the process find its voice. And mine.”

She decided to take an unpaid leave and explore the United States with a Greyhound Bus ticket which gave her 99 days of transportation anywhere for $99. She started out visiting a distant relative in New Jersey and eventually found her way to North Carolina, where she visited a female English professor, Dr. H.G. Hanson, at Campbell College in Buies Creek that she had met when the professor was on sabbatical in Austria. They had a mutual interest in poetry and had corresponded after Dr. Hanson returned to the United States, exchanging poems they had written. Riki still longed to go to college and, after an article about her appeared in the school paper, things snowballed to make her dream come true. She enrolled in the college early in 1965. Riki was able to share an apartment with her mentor and “I became sort of a community project. I got a little scholarship and I worked in the school cafeteria.”

Riki was born in Znaim, Moravia, a small town bordering Austria in the eastern part After taking summer school classes at the of what is now the Czech Republic. © The Entertainment Guide

Riki had her first solo art shows featuring drawings and batiks in Salzburg and Germany in 1974-75 when they took a sabbatical year abroad and lived with Riki’s parents in Austria. Her interest in batik had been sparked by Thora Bjork at the Northfield Arts Guild. Later Riki had the chance to to study in the studio of batik master Kuswadji in Jogjakarta during her first stint as assistant field supervisor for the St. Olaf Term in Asia in 1979-80. It was a long process but Riki attained her second B.A., this time in studio art, at St. Olaf in 1987. During this time she had a two-person show (with Barbara Smith) and a solo exhibit at the former Steensland Gallery on campus. Poetry had always been a passion for Riki and, in the early 1970s, she and Karen Herseth Wee founded a women’s poetry group, still in existence now as “Penchant.” In 1991, Black Hat Press published Borders/Grenzen, a book of her poems in both German and English with a bicultural theme which reflected her background in Austria. Riki went for another graduate degree, commuting to classes at the University of Minnesota starting in 1991. She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in studio art in 1994. Her studies included drawing, painting and the making of artists’ books which was highlighted by co-teaching an honors seminar with her mentor, Joyce Lyon. She also took a class in performance art, out of which Riki emerged as Roosterwoman.

The Northfield News of April 13, 1994, announced that Riki Kölbl Nelson would be giving a one-woman performance at the Northfield Center for the Arts on April 17 as Roosterwoman, her “alter ego created out of her sense of frustration at communicating her needs artistically. She has found a way to express these needs by crowing.” When, as a young girl in Austria, she wanted to learn to whistle, she was told that “girls who whistle and chickens who crow should have their necks wrung.” Using songs and her own poetry, she took the audience along on her journey from Austria to America and showed them an “example of a woman who has gone against convention and tradition to develop into an extraordinary being unafraid to strut and crow.” Riki told me her performance was aimed at “fighting the more restricted definition of what girls and women can do” and that her character “acted out the empowerment” that she was striving for. She wore a rooster tail, a “chicken wire bustle with ribbons” and a hat with rooster feathers. Riki said she let her “inner ham come out” and, after performances in Northfield and in Minneapolis, “the inner ham was satisfied and I was done with that.” In the MFA show at the Katherine Nash Gallery in Minneapolis, in 1994, she said she had a video running of her Roosterwoman performance, along with a stylized cabinet with a variety of pinafores and aprons hanging inside. The artist with two bachelor’s degrees and two master’s degrees obviously values education and she has shared her knowledge through being a teacher herself. She has given art lessons to students of all ages at her home and in her studio on 5th Street.

It took several months to secure the venue and there were the logistics of first storing, then transporting and hanging the 70 pieces of art. Riki was grateful for the assistance given by wonderful helpers with planning, publicity and all other aspects. Rob Schanilec and Felicia Crosby provided pro bono printing of the photos of the girls and informative text. Vern Rippley of Northfield and Riki’s son, Benno Nelson, and his wife, Amy, who had come from Los Angeles where Benno has a production company, provided expenses of food and wine from Carleton’s catering service. A crowd of 100 people, ages from one to 90, showed up. (The one-year-old was her granddaughter, Else Bird Nelson.) Of the 70 pieces of art, ultimately all but two were sold. Riki said she is still in touch with one of the girls from Sri Lanka who was given a scholarship and hopes to meet Nick Hindman, the coordinator of Orphan Sponsorship International, soon. One of the challenges of executing 70 for 70 was that families of girls in the countries who could benefit from a scholarship had to be convinced that, as Riki told me, “It would be good if your daughter has an education.” The idea still exists, which echoes from Riki’s own past, that a woman would not want to be more educated than her husband. Riki, with a bit of a Roosterwoman crow, noted that having attained an MFA degree, which is terminal, “I feel I am on equal par now with my husband, Eric, and his Ph.D.”

Riki Kölbl Nelson at her 70 for 70 benefit at the Weitz Center in 2013

Riki was part of the SEMAC Grant and Grace Whittier Fund program of art residencies in Northfield schools 2006-09. She teaches an ongoing workshop at the Northfield Retirement Center, has taught Elderhostel classes at St. Olaf and several courses in Northfield’s Cannon Valley Elder Collegium. Nowhere was her dedication to education more obvious than on March 17, 2013, when Riki hosted what she called a 70 for 70 benefit at Carleton’s Weitz Center for Creativity. Having passed her 70th birthday the previous November, Riki decided to commemorate the occasion by raising scholarship money for girls by selling her art. Dina Fesler, founder of the nonprofit Children’s Culture Connection, which forges educational ties to Afghanistan, aided Riki in brainstorming how this might be accomplished. They came up with the idea of selling 70 of Riki’s pieces of art, including paintings, drawings, batiks and some fiber works, at three price points, each of which would fund one year of education for a girl from Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and India. Orphan Sponsorship International would give the scholarship money out to the girls chosen from Sri Lanka and India and Marefat High School in Kabul would handle funds raised for Afghanistan. Pictures of the girls who would be given the scholarships were on the wall at the Weitz Center and buyers could choose a picture to be attached to the back of their purchases. Thus, “the wall of girls diminished as the event went on” and, Riki said, it was a wonderful and visual way for people to see “This is what I am supporting.”

“My love of poetry, batik, sculpture, painting and artist books, all have opened doors (for me) for education and professional opportunities. I am gratified that I could, through my art, contribute to providing opportunities for others.”

“After consulting with trusted friends who practice medicine themselves, I chose Northfield Hospital.” Andy Rezac

To read more of Andy’s story, go to http://goo.gl/RzteSg

In retrospect, Andy Rezac had a close call. A sudden onset of acute diverticulitis, an inflammation or infection in the small pouches in the digestive tract, ravaged a portion of his large intestine. Andy needed surgery to remove a foot of diseased colon. “If I had waited a couple of days, it could have been really nasty,” said a grateful and relieved Rezac. He remembers fighting through some abdominal pain he characterized as “discomfort” while coaching his son’s hockey team. By the end of the weekend, he was in bed with a skyrocketing fever. He spent seven days in the hospital on antibiotics, then three weeks on an outpatient basis through the hospital’s Emergency Department. But it was a stubborn infection, so surgery was scheduled. Colon surgery is delicate and complex, usually requiring two surgeons. Dr. Katya Ericson and Dr. Chris Nielsen performed Andy’s surgery. In Andy’s case, extensive inflammation in the colon would make it difficult to identify the

ureters. Dr. Braasch, a urologist, was enlisted to place lighted stents to protect the ureters. Andy spent six days in the hospital and another week at home recovering. Now, he’s back on the ice with his son. Andy praises the surgeons, nurses and hospitalists for their expertise and excellent care. “I could have gone other places to have the surgery, but after consulting with trusted friends who practice medicine themselves, I chose Northfield Hospital. They have great surgeons and I wanted to be close to home to make it easy on my family.”
