After the last of the hotdish is served, the coffee pot emptied and the Jello molds put away, these steadfast, sturdy women head to their farms, peel off their good girdles and get on with their daily chores. In between picking eggs, milking cows and dusting knickknacks, they congregate with some of the other lovable folks who inhabit this rural community: Earl, who delivers the mail up and down Rural Route One; Fergus, the hired man; and Tillie, who chronicles the action for the Fish County Weekly. With plenty of crazy antics, loads of fresh laughs and spanking new original songs, You Smell Barn celebrates rural life in the 1950s – a musical treat for all. Leaves of Grass – Illuminated

Sept. 30, 7:30pm Northfield Arts Guild Theater The Northfield Arts Guild, Content Books and Northfield Poet Laureate host this capstone event for the Northfield Poetry Festival. This one-man show performed by Patrick Scully shows aspects of Walt Whitman’s life and work, revealing relationships between men during Whitman’s era. Scully says, “I believe there would be no marriage equality in the U.S. today if Whitman hadn’t first written Leaves of Grass in 1855. This show celebrates that, making historical connections from the past to our present, and provides sustenance for battles that still remain.” This show is appropriate for high school age and above. Tickets will not be sold, but a free-will offering will be accepted. See this show before it plays at the Guthrie Theater next summer. More info at northfieldartsguild.org or 507/645-8877. 50 Shades of Insight... What does that mean? As I resume my creative path here, I must give pause to the enlightening impact of my hiatus that I touched on last month. I thought about doing a funny autumn or Halloween related comic and column, but I chose instead to cast off the “rose colored” glasses that Constance and Clara donned last month and reflect on something more significant. Taking a glimpse into the insight gained through life’s experiences, the many depths, layers, and phases of understanding, seems in order as we transition to fall. Specifically, and more recently for me, through death and loss. On the heels of my return from Florida my sweet mother passed away unexpectedly. She died from complications of the flu just before her 77th birthday. That is young in today’s world. And for my mom, who was vibrant, intelligent, and fun, it seemed unfair. She had returned to college in her 70s after retiring from medicine and earned a new degree in creative writing, followed by the publication of the children’s book that she wrote – which I had the honor of illustrating. The book, which was her dream, Zena’s Dream, won a Midwest Book Award, and Mom had book signings, readings, and events that brought her much joy. And suddenly she was gone. I am grateful that I was here, and able to spend time with her before she got sick. And I am honored again by being with her in her last moments. Though I am bereft, and will miss her presence in this earthly realm, I accept her physical absence. Sometimes begrudgingly. But what choice do I have, really? Denial is counterproductive on every level. Life is change. Nothing remains the same no matter how very much we want it to. Instead I carry with me the unconditional love she gave me all of my life, and the inspiration she consistently provided by always growing, seeking, learning, and finding joy – often in spite of difficulty. I learned from her to dwell in possibility, to see the glass as overflowing. So, thanks for that, Mom, and for everything, really. I love you always, until the end of the age.

Presley, Perkins, Lewis & Cash • 2pm

Ames Center, Burnsville Memphis is alive with a new genre of music – not quite rockabilly, not quite swing – the papers are calling it rock and roll. As the rock and roll phenomenon sweeps the nation, four men stand at the center of the swirling musical storm. In Presley, Perkins, Lewis & Cash, you’ll hear them all – plucked from the past and brought to stand before you, just as they did in 1956. It’s a rockin’ trip into the bowels of the South – an intimate musical session where the true spirit of rock lives again. Tickets: $36-$46, available at the Ames Center Box Office, 800/982-2787 or ticketmaster.com. Hot Spot Music Studio, Northfield Open to musicians of all ages and abilities, this jam is a perfect way to run through standard charts in a low-key, laid-back setting. Charts will be provided for everyone to follow along. It’s a spiritual experience. More at hotspotmusic.org.

Tavern Lounge, Northfield While best known for his fire-breathin’, foot-stompin,’ rootsy rockin’ performances with his band The Bratlanders, experience a softer and more introspective side of alt-country fave Matt Arthur in this solo performance. Arthur learned to sing by listening to gospel records from Tennessee Ernie Ford and Johnny Cash, and as he explains, “That’s what he wanted to do when he grew up.” He recently released a solo album, On The Edge, At The Bottom, to stellar reviews and sold-out performances in Minneapolis and Northfield.
