Autumn has arrived, and as the daylight hours dwindle and temperatures begin to drop, we can all feel the changing of the season upon us. This is a time to give thanks for the Summer sun and to pay tribute to the coming darkness. These are the moments to look at our lives and take stock of what is needed to sustain us in the colder months to come, while also honoring all that’s been provided to us this far. We have just journeyed through the Autumn Equinox, experiencing the beauty of balance that it represents, as well as the tipping point in our journey towards Winter.

Autumn. Nourishing foods, high in protein and (good) fats, that are brought to life with warming, stimulating spices and served hot, will go a long way toward maintaining your internal fire and keeping you grounded through the season. This time of year is also a potent period to build resilient immune systems to prepare for the tough Winter. There are some powerful medicines, native to this region, that you should get to know. Elderberry syrup and FireCider (made with local garlic and honey) are especially helpful as we begin to cozy up more and share space/germs.

Cleve Jones is an American human rights activist, author and lecturer. Jones joined the gay liberation movement in the early 1970s. He was mentored by pioneer LGBT activist Harvey Milk and worked in Milk’s City Hall office as a student intern until Milk’s assassination in 1978. Jones founded The NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt, one of the world’s largest community arts projects, in 1987.

Sweet Jazz has been performing in the Northfield area since 2006, starting back then with just Christina Schwietz doing vocals and Peter Webb on piano in an exploration of jazz vocal standards. A jazz duo comprised of two top tier Twin Cities jazz players who happen to have deep connections to Northfield. Bassist Kevin Clements taught jazz bass at Carleton College for years when he wasn’t flying as a commercial pilot or gigging with any number of Twin Cities jazz greats. Dave Hagedorn is among the most in-demand vibes (the vibraphone is that thing that looks like a xylophone) players on the country. He performs regularly with many Twin Cities jazz groups as well as the Minnesota Orchestra and the St Paul Chamber Orchestra. Hagedorn also is in charge of anything “jazz” at St. Olaf College and directs the multi-award winning jazz bands at the college.

Have you ever struggled with drafting an artist statement? The Northfield Arts Guild and Paradise Center for the Arts are here to help. In this collaborative offering, panelists with experience writing successful artist statements will share an overview of tips when writing an artist statement. Following the group presentation portion, attendees who’ve pre-registered can participate in a 10-minute breakout review session for one-on-one help with their artist statement. Participants in the breakout sessions are invited to email in a sample artist statement the week before the workshop. RSVPs are required for participation in the review sessions with a panelist. Refreshments and snacks will be available during the workshop for attendees in both parts. Networking is encouraged while artists are waiting for their session with a panelist.
