Oct. 26-28, Th-Sa 7:30pm, Su 2pm Weitz Theater, Carleton College, Northfield Chicago, 1930s: the “Cauliflower Trust” is making a move to conquer the vegetable trade when petty criminal Arturo Ui concocts a protection racket. After a reign of terror, Ui emerges as an undisputed mob boss. Written in the early 1940s by Bertolt Brecht, the play is a thinly veiled allegory of the rise of Adolph Hitler and the Third Reich, told through the borrowed plot of Shakespeare’s Richard III. It is a cautionary tale of unchecked political ambition and power – a reminder for today that Arturo Uis are resistible. Tickets at apps.carleton.edu/curricular/ thea/calendar/tickets/. The Drowsy Chaperone is a masterful meta-musical, poking fun at all the tropes that characterize the musical theater genre. Mother Courage and Her Children
Nov. 10-12, 16-18, Th-Sa 7:30pm, Su 2pm Kelsey Theater, St. Olaf, Northfield Bertolt Brecht wrote Mother Courage and Her Children in just a month in 1939 using revolutionary theater techniques to awaken audiences to the perils of rising Fascism and Nazism in his German homeland. Although known as one of the greatest anti-war plays of the 20th century, it also delves into themes well beyond the hell of war. At its core, this play-with-music examines the humanity of a woman who, hardened by nearly impossible circumstances, is forced again and again to make extremely difficult decisions. Her story is incredibly human, tragically beautiful and unquestioningly thought provoking. The production features original music and videos in service to the lively and engaged theater experience Brecht hoped to provide his own audiences who, like us, were living in a society divided about how best to move forward in troubling times. Directed by Dona Werner Freeman, Artist in Residence. Tickets: $10 (cash or check), available at 507/786-8987. Box office hours are M-F 11am-4pm and one hour prior to a performance. DISENCHANTED!
Nov. 16, 7:30pm Ames Center, Burnsville The idea for DISENCHANTED! was conceived by Giacino, a former history teacher. When teaching his class about the colonial settlement at Jamestown, Virginia, he couldn’t help but wonder: What would the “real” Pocahontas – a circa 1616, rough-and-tumble 10-year-old Powhatan girl – think of the fringed deer-pelt miniskirt and long, flowing hair donned by her 20-year-old counterpart in her 1995 movie comeback? A musician at heart, Giacino penned a musical number skewering the ‘princess pop culture’ that transformed Pocahontas from a revered Native American heroine into a pin-up vixen of the silver screen. Soon, Giacino found himself discovering a number of other princesses who had a bone to pick with the way they have been portrayed, and DISENCHANTED! was born. Tickets: $40/$30, available at the Ames Center Box Office, 800/982-2787 or ticketmaster.com. Fiddler on the Roof

A Charlie Brown Christmas, Live on Stage
Nov. 19, 1pm, 3:30 and 6:30pm Ames Center, Burnsville This new touring production by Charles M. Schulz features everyone’s favorite Peanuts gang – Linus, Lucy, Snoopy, Sally and more, all led by the lovable Charlie Brown as they discover the true meaning of Christmas. When Charlie Brown becomes discouraged by the materialism of the season, Lucy convinces him to direct the neighborhood Christmas play. In typical Charlie Brown fashion, things go awry when he selects a tiny fir tree for the production. It’s up to Linus to save the day and remind everyone of the real message of the holiday. Schulz’s timeless story of the spirit of Christmas showcases the unforgettable music of Vince Guaraldi, performed by a three-piece ensemble on stage, as well as a concert of beloved holiday carols led by the Peanuts characters. Tickets: $30/$40, available at the Ames Center Box Office, 800/982-2787 or ticketmaster.com. Memories, Moments and Music

Tanzenwald Brewing Co, Northfield “Some songs old, some songs new, some songs country, some songs blue.” Singer/ guitarist Mark Grim’s voice brings to mind Gordon Lightfoot as he artfully picks and strums through songs ranging from the Beatles’ Blackbird to Warren Zevon’s Poor, Poor Pitiful Me. His own songs, I Still Can’t See, Me and My Tattoo and Easy Money, will give you cause to reflect – and laugh – at the real life characters that are portrayed. More at markgrimmusic.com.

Shattuck-St. Mary’s, Faribault The most famous boys’ choir in the world. Audiences and critics worldwide have praised these talented singers for their celestial voices, pure tone, irresistible charm and above all a wide-ranging repertoire spanning centuries. With a rich history dating back more than 500 years, the Vienna Boys Choir has been associated with many of the world’s greatest composers such as Mozart and Bruckner. Haydn and Schubert were themselves choristers. The choir performs classical and contemporary works which vary each season. This program, Bella Italia, includes popular and classical compositions from beautiful Italy with classical pieces by Vivaldi, Rossini, Verdi, Mascagni and other Italian composers, along with such well known favorites as Santa Lucia, O sole mio, Volare and more. Tickets: $30 adults, $18 students, available at 507/333-1620. Chris Holm • 8-11pm
Tavern Lounge, Northfield Minneapolis-based acoustic folk, blues and country musician Chris Holm returns in support of his debut solo release, The Trains Don’t Run Here Anymore. A fingerstyle guitar picker and harmonica player, Holm channels the high-spirited liveliness of Charley Patton, thumping on his suitcase drum, attacking his guitar strings with abandon and shouting along in a gravelly howl, later to channel the lonesome sounds of a weeping slide guitar and a blue yodel. Despite his Northern Minnesota roots, Holm has formed an intimate connection with the music of the American South. Raised on the music of Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Flatt & Scruggs, The Beatles and Creedence Clearwater Revival, he eventually dug into the music that inspired those great artists and discovered a deep appreciation for country blues and hillbilly country music.

Jack & Kitty • 8-11pm
The Contented Cow, Northfield Kitty’s uncle is Bunny Wailer of Bob Marley and the Wailers fame, so music is literally in her blood. She grew up listening to a healthy blend of reggae, rap and R&B. At a young age Jack discovered his vaudevillian great grandfather’s phonograph record collection and spent his childhood listening to cats like Bing Crosby, Al Jolson and Rudy Vallee. As fate would have it, oddball ukulele legend Tiny Tim moved in next door and became Jack’s babysitter. That rich musical stew forms the blend of Jack and Kitty’s Emmy Award-winning artistic approach. It’s organic and acoustic with nothing but positive vibes. Laid-back music steeped in tradition with one foot firmly in the future, they call their style “organic vaudeville folk.” SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 19 Holiday Art Fair • 11am-3pm
