through Feb. 14 Tu/W/Th 1pm, F/Sa 7:30pm, Sa 3pm, Su 2pm Go to ames-center.com for special holiday showtimes Ames Center for the Performing Arts, Burnsville From the basement to the barn, your beloved Church Basement Ladies are back and getting busy with life outside the kitchen. After the last of the hotdish is served, the coffee pot emptied and the Jello molds put away, these steadfast, sturdy women head to their farms, peel off their good girdles and get on with their daily chores. In between picking eggs, milking cows and dusting knickknacks, they congregate with some of the other lovable folks who inhabit this rural community: Earl, who delivers the mail up and down Rural Route One; Fergus, the hired man; and Tillie, who chronicles the action for the Fish County Weekly. With plenty of crazy antics, loads of fresh laughs and spanking new original songs, You Smell Barn celebrates rural life in the 1950s – a musical treat for all. Tickets: $32-$42, available at the Ames Center Box Office, 800/982-2787 or ticketmaster.com. The Haunting of Hill House
Nov. 1-3, 7:30pm Paradise Center for the Arts, Faribault Directed by Patrick Braucher, this classic psychological drama is just in time for Halloween. A chilling and mystifying study in mounting terror in which a small group of “psychically-receptive” people are brought together in Hill House, a brooding, midVictorian mansion known as a place of evil and “contained ill will.” Based on the novel by Shirley Jackson and adapted for the stage by F. Andrew, this show was also made into the movie The Haunting. Tickets: $14 members, $16 nonmembers, $10 students, available at the box office, 507/332-7372 or paradisecenterforthearts.org/tickets/. Pinocchio
Nov. 2, 10am (school show) and 7pm Sheldon Theatre, Red Wing Born from a talking piece of wood carved by the old Geppetto, the rebellious, cheeky and careless Pinocchio discovers the meaning of growing up through a thousand trials. To become a real boy, he will have to face Mangiafuoco, the terrible Puppet Master, suffer the malice of the Fox and his sidekick, the Cat, escape from Toyland and save his father from the belly of the giant fish. Pinocchio, a production of Tout à Trac, is an amazing journey into the heart of childhood and imagination. Best for ages 5+. Tickets: $10-$18, available at sheldontheatre.org.

Our Town
Nov. 2-3, 9-11, F/Sa 7:30pm, Su 2pm Northfield High School Auditorium Northfield High School Theater presents this timeless drama of life in the mythical village of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, an American classic with universal appeal. Thornton Wilder’s most frequently performed play, Our Town, appeared on Broadway in 1938 to wide acclaim and won the Pulitzer Prize. Our Town explores the relationship between two young Grover’s Corners neighbors, George Gibbs and Emily Webb, whose childhood friendship blossoms into romance and then culminates in marriage and, eventually, death. The simple story of a love affair is constantly rediscovered because it asks timeless questions about the meaning of love, life and death. Wilder offers, simply, a couple of chairs on a bare stage as the backdrop for an exploration of the universal human experience. “While all of Wilder’s work is intelligent, nonsynthetic and often moving, as well as funny, it is Our Town that makes the difference. It is probably the finest play ever written by an American.” –Edward Albee. Tickets: $6 adults, $4 students. Jesus Christ Superstar
Nov. 9-10 and 14-17, 7:30pm; Nov. 10 and 17, 1pm Kelsey Theater, St. Olaf, Northfield Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. Directed by Randy Reyes, Theater Department Artist in Residence. A 1970 rock opera loosely based on the Gospels’ accounts of the last week of Jesus’ life, beginning with the preparation for the arrival of Jesus and his disciples in Jerusalem and ending with the crucifixion. It depicts political and interpersonal struggles between Judas Iscariot and Jesus that are not present in the Bible. This production will embrace the idea of rock idolatry and grounding the world in a rock concert setting complete with backup dancers and an awesome rock band. Tickets: $10 for the general public and can be reserved at 507/786-8987 M-F 11am-4pm and one hour prior to a performance. Presented by arrangement with The Musical Company, LP. A Don’t Hug Me Christmas Carol
Nov. 9-11, 15-18, Th-Sa 7pm, Su 2pm Lakeville Area Arts Center A hilarious spoof of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. It’s the smash hit sequel to the award-winning musical, Don’t Hug Me. It’s Christmas Eve in Bunyan Bay, Minnesota, and cantankerous bar owner Gunner Johnson gets in an argument with his wife, Clara, and tells her he’s skipping Christmas. He storms out of the bar, goes snowmobiling across the lake, falls through the ice and goes into a coma. He comes back in his dream where he’s visited by folk legend, Sven Yorgensen, who plays the ghost of Christmas past, present and future and takes Gunner (Scrooge) on a journey similar to that in A Christmas Carol. Tickets: $16/$14 balcony, available at 952/985-4640 or lakevilleareaartscenter.com.

Noël: The Musical is the creation of NY Times bestselling author Eoin Colfer, better known for his hugely successful series of children’s books Artemis Fowl, which sold more than 25 million copies worldwide and is currently being adapted into a major motion picture by Disney. Noël tells a heartwarming tale of a little girl (Noël), who is preparing for her starring role in a school Christmas play when her mother suddenly disappears. On her quest to find her mom, Noël befriends a motley crew of homeless characters who have lost their way in life. Chief amongst them is Nick, who believes the world has forgotten the true meaning of Christmas. Noël’s bright innocence and unwavering belief in finding her mother inspires Nick to embrace life once more, finding love and hope in himself and in the world. Tickets: $33-$53, available at the Ames Center Box Office, 800/982-2787 or ticketmaster.com.

Tiny Tim gets a better offer, Scrooge is a social-activist making questionable changes to the script and the National Endowment for the Arts inspector is due any minute. It’s “sheer comic genius” according to Journal American and The Seattle Times calls it “A Dickens of a giggle.” It’s a perfect farcical send-up of theater and the holidays, where everything goes delightfully wrong. Crossings at Carnegie, Zumbrota Ann Reed and Dan Chouinard choose a trove of familiar songs, audience members request others, lyrics are projected on a big screen and a noisy time is had by all. Bring the family. Songwriter, singer, guitarist and author Reed has been performing for more than 40 years with her rich, darkchocolate voice, storytelling from the human experience and songs that find a permanent place in the heart. Of course some of her songs and stories might end up closer to your funny bone – a little irreverence never hurt anyone. Chouinard is a honky-tonk pianist, street accordionist, concert soloist and accompanist, a polyglot both musical and linguistic, a writer, Italian teacher and bicyclist. He is frequently commissioned to create and host programs that blend history, memoir and music for Minnesota Public Radio, the Minnesota Historical Society, Twin Cities Public Television and theaters throughout the region. And he loves a good sing-along. Chouinard and Reed are co-hosts of a long-running community sing-along in St. Anthony Park, which draws upwards of 100 loud people every third Wednesday of the month. Simply Fodder For Your Next Cocktail Party By Sherri Faye ©2018
Paisley Paws, the femme feline character in Left Field, is not so much an alter ego of mine, as she is a catalyst. A cartoon incarnation of who I am, where I am at in life. To some extent each of my characters is, but Paisley most closely reflects me, my ventures, my insights and outlook. Besides the obvious fact that she is an artist, she is an observer... of life, of others, of herself. She is both sensitive and cynical, esoteric yet pragmatic, playful and disciplined, edgy yet soft, wise and whimsical. She is not real (in case that escaped your attention) so she is better at balancing those dichotomies than I am. But, because I am her creator, I know her better than she knows herself (at least, I think I do). I learn from her and through her. Being a writer, cartoonist, artist, and humorist is a vehicle to convey ideas, feelings, and messages to an outside audience, this is true. But it can and should ultimately be a method to be an observer of my own damn self, to connect with and learn more about the authentic Sherri Faye. In doing so, as with life in general, I participate in a cycle - digging deeper, discovering and exposing truths, being pulled by a desire for that authenticity. The beauty of it is if I do it well, and do it right, it can improve the quality, content, and depth of my art, my message, and the ability to express it. Here I depicted Paisley truly seeing and listening to her muse - her friend, the beautiful, witty, intelligent, and overwrought Constance - while trying an abstract form of art to create a truly reflective and insightful portrait. As Paisley pushes her creative self, I find myself doing the same. These days I’m experimenting with new art forms and techniques. Dabbling in pottery, in abstract multi-media paintings, unique card making, and immersed in a writing workshop... and it is sheer joy. “J.O.Y. Joy, I say, sheer joy!” [spoken like Foghorn Leghorn] I will be 60 in the spring, and a few years ago I had no idea what my life would be like at this phase of the game. I thought I did, but things change. Life changes and evolves, whether we want it to or not. Is everything perfect? Oh hell no. Is everything okay? Oh hell yes. It always is, no matter what. I am growing (#seehips), I am learning, I am content, and I am having fun! I am at peace. I am thankful for everything. “Tomorrow Never Knows - Turn off your mind, and float downstream. It is not dying, it is not dying. Lay down all thoughts, surrender to the void. It is shining, it is shining. That you may see the meaning of within. It is being, it is being.” ~ The Beatles

The Broken Heartland String Band is out to provide a good time with wholesome, partner-swaying, knee-slapping, hootin’ and hollerin’ tunes. More at soundcloud. com/brokenheartlandstringband. St. Olaf Christmas Festival • 7:30-9:30pm
Skoglund Center, St. Olaf, Northfield For many people, over several generations, the celebration of the Advent-Christmas-Epiphany season begins with the annual St. Olaf Christmas Festival, a century-old tradition of the college. The festival continues as an outgrowth of Christian conviction and an expression of the rich musical heritage at St. Olaf, a college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. This year’s Christmas Festival, Good News of Great Joy, features the St. Olaf Choir, the St. Olaf Orchestra, the St. Olaf Cantorei, the St. Olaf Chapel Choir, the Manitou Singers and the Viking Chorus, performing both as individual groups and as a massed ensemble.
