They hear that an old lady in York, PA, is about to die and leave her fortune to her two long lost English nephews. They resolve to pass themselves off as her beloved relatives and get the cash. The trouble happens when they find out that the relatives aren’t nephews, but nieces! Romantic entanglements abound and chaos ensues. It is December 1960 and members of this rural community have gathered around their reel-to-reel tape player to record a special Christmas greeting for one of their boys serving overseas. As the ladies serve up coffee and cookies, Pastor suffers from a case of stage fright, Mavis smuggles a piglet into the kitchen, a surprise visitor leaves Karin speechless and the Widow Vivian Snustad gets caught in an embarrassing situation. The Case of the Railway Ruckus

Nov. 1-2, 8-10, F/Sa 7:30pm, Su 2pm Northfield High School

A deviouslydelicious Broadway and Hollywood sci-fi smash musical, Little Shop Of Horrors has devoured the hearts of theater goers for more than 30 years. Howard Ashman and Alan Menken (Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Beauty And The Beast and Aladdin) are the creative geniuses behind this dark comedy that has become one of the most popular shows in the world. The meek floral assistant, Seymour Krelborn, stumbles across a new breed of plant he names “Audrey II” after his coworker crush. This R&B-singing carnivore promises unending fame and fortune to the down-and-out Krelborn as long as he keeps feeding it – BLOOD. Over time, though, Seymour discovers Audrey II’s out of this world origins and intent towards global domination. One of the longest-running Off-Broadway shows, this charmingly tongue-in-cheek comedy has been produced worldwide to incredible success. On Nov. 15 some of Southern Minnesota’s finest rock, Americana and country musicians will be paying tribute to the rock legend Tom Petty with a chunk of the proceeds going to Habitat for Humanity. Fred the Bear and special guests will be rockin’ Paradise Center for the Arts, playing some of the best rock ‘n’ roll music ever written. Tickets to Won’t Back Down – An Evening of Tom Petty Music are $12 students, $16 members and $21 non-members. Doors open at 7, show at 7:30pm. More at paradisecenterforthearts.org.

15 Years of Great Holiday Fare

Leaves have turned, summer breezes have shifted seasons and you’re holding the November issue of The Entertainment Guide. Put those pieces together and you know the holiday season is just around the corner. Fortunately, Northfield’s Fine Craft Collective – a seasonal artisan cooperative – has become a dependable mainstay for quality, creative holiday shopping. They are celebrating their 15th year! The super cool thing about this retail collection of locally-created craft is that it’s staffed by the artisans themselves within the professional confines of the Northfield Arts Guild’s main gallery. This year’s opening reception is Nov. 8, 5-8pm. The shop/gallery opens Nov. 4 and keeps on keeping on into Dec. 24. More at finecraftcollective.com.

A GREAT Time to Give

Give to the Max Day began in 2009 as a way to support nonprofits online, through GiveMN.org. Its annual one-day, one-stop-shopping blitz brings out statewide givers in droves. In its first 10 years, donors have given nearly $170 million to 10,000 nonprofits and schools as part of Give to the Max Day. A great place to start your 2019 GTTM consideration is inside this issue on pages 34-36. Here you’ll find a plethora of local causes – several of which are bound to fit with your generosity. So remember the date: Nov. 14 – and please go to givemn.org/donate and give the max. 6 tocontent@entertainmentguidemn.com

It’s been great to see the southern end of Northfield’s historic downtown blossom over the past few years – Imminent Brewers, Reunion, Armory Square and more. And in the mix there’s Cafe Shawn – creating fresh, local and seasonal foods from within The Low Down space at Armory Square. Check out the Cafe Shawn Facebook page for more, but in the meantime consider Friday Night Pizza. Made-to-order pizza, a full bar and live acoustic music within the walls of Armory Square. This all-ages-welcome evening runs 4-8pm. November’s lineup: Russell Franek Nov. 1, Chase Ingraham Nov. 8, AJ Scheiber Nov. 15, Grace Wooten with Ray Coudret Nov. 22 and Helen Forsythe with Delia Kane Nov 29. Cafe Shawn is also open for Sunday brunches each week 9:30am-1pm.

The Best Female Singer You’ve Never Heard

OK – I’m going to cut to the chase and simply quote Star Tribune reporter Jon Bream: “Joyann Parker is the best Twin Cities female singer you’ve never heard. Imagine a sober Janis Joplin. And that’s a good thing. Imagine a taller Shemekia Copeland without the my-dad-was-a-blues-star pedigree. And that’s a really good thing. There’s pain in Parker’s heart – and in just about every song she writes and sings. And, onstage, the grimace on her face, the clenched fists and the ache in her roar let her listeners know that she knows hurt...Whatever she plays, Parker owns it. She’s a powerful, animated blues-rock singer, capable guitarist and pianist, and a writer of praiseworthy originals.” Catch Joyann Parker Nov. 10, 1-4pm at Vintage Escapes Winery in Kilkenny.

From Appalachia to the Andes

Che Apalache is a four-man string band based in Buenos Aires with members from Argentina, Mexico and the US. The group’s founder, Joe Troop, is a North Carolinian who moved to Argentina in 2010. While carving out a niche in the local music scene, he taught bluegrass and old-time. That’s how he met Pau Barjau, Franco Martino and Martin Bobrik, his most dedicated students. Together, they are Che Apalache. Combining instrumental prowess with tight vocal harmonies, they have curated an authentic blend of genres, evoking images from Appalachia to the Andes. Savor their unique sound Nov. 7 at Shattuck St. Mary’s in Faribault. Adults $25, Student $15. Performance at 7:30pm. More at s-sm.org/FeslerLampert.

Her musical universe, stretches across the spectrum from indie pop to alt-country to full-tilt rock ‘n’ roll. Yasmineh returns in support of her seventh album, High Priestess And The Renegade – a mix of alternative, punk and folk – and hailed as “one of the best albums so far of 2018,” earning high praise and five out of five star ratings from critics in the U.S. and Europe. HOW TO HEAL YOUR BODY AND

Remove Inflammation & Pain In order to maintain or restore the body, we need to have certain processes functioning properly. One of the most important factors in overall health is to have a healthy digestive system so that we are processing and absorbing all of our nutrients, which aids in producing neurotransmitters, fighting off foreign invaders and eliminating waste. We also need to have a healthy blood sugar system, as well as adequate intake of water, vitamins, minerals and fatty acids, which comes with a balanced whole food diet. When we have all these systems functioning in health, the body will often restore balance and repair most disease states.

Does it have the correct enzymes and gut flora to produce the neurotransmitters you need for healthy brain function? Many disorders of the intestines are caused by lack of stomach acid, which actually causes acid reflux. When the stomach does not have enough stomach acid, then the food sits in the stomach and rancidifies causing gas, which leads to reflux. Stomach acid is necessary to break down your foods to absorb them. Taking a proton pump inhibitor for acid reflux actually reduces the body’s ability to digest fats and proteins and

The most common inflammatory foods are gluten, dairy (except ghee), unfermented soy, sugar and corn syrup. Some people also react to nightshade vegetables (bell peppers, tomatoes and eggplants). In order to figure out if any of these are a problem for you, it is important to remove them all for 2-4 weeks, then add them back one at a time. The Whole30 diet is a good way to try this.

can lead to bone loss. A body uses vitamin B-12, zinc and magnesium to produce stomach acid. These are often low in those with GERD. Try to increase your intake of these essential vitamins and minerals. Additionlly, many of the foods we eat are inflammatory. That means, when you eat them, the

Presented by Crossings at Carnegie at the Zumbrota State Theatre

Hornucopia is a band of talented musicians and singers from the Twin Cities and upper Midwest area. Distinct from tribute bands that pay homage to a single group or style of music, Hornucopia pays tribute to many musical groups that feature substantial horn sections. It boasts a tight four-piece horn section and a four-piece rhythm section, plus three top-rated vocalists whose melodies and harmonies are inspiring and far-reaching. Tower of Power, Chicago, Blood, Sweat & Tears, plus Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake and others are just some of the groups that Hornucopia’s 11-member ensemble will salute in a singular tribute show that celebrates multiple genres of music. Tickets: $28 advance, $32 at the door, available at Crossings, crossingsatcarnegie.com or 507-732-7616.

“Searching for Nora: After The Doll’s House” with author Wendy Swallow • 1:30-2:30pm

HAPPENINGS Sunday, November 10, continued

Northfield Public Library

Joyann Parker • 1-4pm

Vintage Escapes Winery, Kilkenny

Joyann Parker brings a full range of talent to her performances as an accomplished singer, pianist, guitarist and songwriter. She has performed for thousands at major venues and festivals across the country, frequently sells out the most prestigious clubs in the Twin Cities and garnered national and international attention for her newest record, Hard To Love. Parker has opened for Grammy winner Robert Cray, taken the stage for Grammy nominee Elvin Bishop in a pinch, represented Minnesota at the 2015 International Blues Competition in Memphis and won the award for 2016’s Best Self-Produced CD from the Minnesota Blues Society. Exhibit Reception: Annie Young, A Veteran’s Affair • 1-4pm Owatonna Arts Center

Author Wendy Swallow set out to answer the question of what happened to Nora Helmer, the heroine of Henrik Ibsen’s play A Doll’s House. After this loving wife and mother walks out of her difficult marriage at the end of Ibsen’s play, Nora has no plan and scarcely any money. The audience is left to ponder what will become of her. Swallow’s novel follows Nora as she struggles to make a life for herself in Kristiania (now Oslo) and then escapes Norway in disguise, a passenger on an emigrant ship and soon a reluctant settler in the harsh Minnesota prairie. He’ll cover the architecture and function of verses and choruses, address the basics of rhyme and metrical patterns and then explain how to develop an initial song-concept into a finished composition, moving from the “little ideas” of concrete sensory observation to the “big ideas” of theme and motif. This program is appropriate for songwriters of all ability levels, from raw beginners to seasoned veterans. The ability to play a musical instrument is not required. Brian Laidlaw is a songwriter and poet who melds myths ancient and contemporary among the raspberries, wolves and taconite mines of Minnesota’s Iron Range. He’s equally adept at melding artistic forms. Each of his published books of poetry has a musical accompaniment. Hobgoblin welcomes Laidlaw back to Red Wing to share his contemporary take on storytelling, mythmaking and songwriting.
