Theater The Church Basement Ladies: You Smell Barn

through Feb. 14 Tu/W/Th 1pm, F/Sa 7:30pm, Sa 3pm, Su 2pm Go to ames-center.com for special holiday showtimes Ames Center for the Performing Arts, Burnsville From the basement to the barn, your beloved Church Basement Ladies are back and getting busy with life outside the kitchen. After the last of the hotdish is served, the coffee pot emptied and the Jello molds put away, these steadfast, sturdy women head to their farms, peel off their good girdles and get on with their daily chores. In between picking eggs, milking cows and dusting knickknacks, they congregate with some of the other lovable folks who inhabit this rural community: Earl, who delivers the mail up and down Rural Route One; Fergus, the hired man; and Tillie, who chronicles the action for the Fish County Weekly. With plenty of crazy antics, loads of fresh laughs and spanking new original songs, You Smell Barn celebrates rural life in the 1950s – a musical treat for all. Tickets: $32-$42, available at the Ames Center Box Office, 800/982-2787 or ticketmaster.com. It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play

Tiny Tim gets a better offer, Scrooge is a social activist making questionable changes to the script and the National Endowment for the Arts inspector is due any minute. It’s “sheer comic genius” according to Journal American and The Seattle Times calls it “A Dickens of a giggle.” It’s a perfect farcical send-up of theater and the holidays, where everything goes delightfully wrong. Tickets: $15, available at sheldontheatre.org.

The consistent response? “You’ll shoot your eye out!” All the elements from the beloved motion picture are here, including the family’s temperamental exploding furnace, the boys’ experiment with a wet tongue on a cold lamppost, the Little Orphan Annie decoder pin, Ralphie’s father winning a lamp shaped like a woman’s leg in a net stocking and everything needed to make your holidays hilarious. Dec. 7-9, 13-16, Th-Sa 7:30pm, Su 2pm Paradise Center for the Arts, Faribault Written by Laura Ambler and Mala Burt, directed by Julianna Skluzacek. It’s five years later as we catch up on the lives of Sandy Hawes and his son Will. Jessica and Will have returned home to finally wed, but reality TV producer and ex-fiancée Brandee shows up to disrupt the ceremony. While Sandy tries to cope with the chaos, including a grandson with an attitude and his new wife’s insecurities, all heck breaks loose as we try to figure out who is married to whom. It’s a family-friendly, crazy comedy, designed to make your holiday more fun. Tickets available at the box office, 507/332-7372 or paradisecenterforthearts.org/purchase-tickets/. A Child’s Christmas in Wales

Dec. 8, 2pm FiftyNorth, Northfield When Dylan Thomas wrote A Child’s Christmas in Wales he went back to his childhood memories. We may not have experienced a Christmas quite like this. But, afterwards, memories will be part of every conversation. Candy cigarettes, presents useful and useless, the small dry voice singing through the keyhole, Mrs. Prothero and the fireman and the reality that is part of Northern Christmases – “I can’t remember whether it snowed for six days and six nights when I was 12 or whether it snowed for 12 days and 12 nights when I was six.” And that’s only the beginning. Dessert reception to follow. Tickets: $10, available at FiftyNorth in advance or at the door. A Christmas Carol Radio Play

Dec. 14-16, F/Sa 7:30pm, Su 2pm Lakeville Area Arts Center The Charles Dickens holiday classic comes to life as a live 1940’s radio broadcast, complete with vintage commercials for fruitcake (extra-fancy) and the magic of live sound effects and musical underscoring. A handful of actors bring dozens of characters to the stage as this familiar story unfolds. Don’t miss this charming take on a family favorite that will leave no one saying “Bah, humbug!” Tickets: $15, $12 ages 60+, available at 952/985-4640 or lakevilleareaartscenter.com. PDYT is an audition- and tuition-based program. The Norwegians

Dec. 10-13, 6-8pm Sheldon Theatre, Red Wing A strong, bitter comedy about women scorned in Minnesota and the really, really nice gangsters – Norwegian hit men – they hire to whack their ex-boyfriends. Olive is a transplant from Texas and Betty is a transplant from Kentucky, but neither of them were prepared for the Norwegian men they would fall in love with in the bold north: the practical, warm, thoughtful, destructive, evil, jilting kind. If you’re a hit man in Minnesota, 83 percent of your clients want to take out their ex (uffda!). Prepare a one-minute monologue. Performances will be Mar. 21-24.

Hornucopia: A Tribute to Horns in the Rock Era will be at the State Theatre in Zumbrota Dec. 7, 7:30pm. And thank you, Joan, Jim and crew, for reminding us what Christmas ought to be about.

Kat Perkins is Back!

Talk about a spirit for the holiday season! You won’t be disappointed with North Dakota native and national sensation, Kat Perkins. Sure, she was a 2014 The Voice finalist, is a successful Twin Cities performer (her band opened for Bon Jovi) and is returning to the Paradise Center for the Arts in Faribault Dec. 30, where she holds the honor of being their largest sell-out ever. But if that’s not enough for you to rush to reserve your tickets for her New Year’s Celebration performance (for audience members of all ages), here’s how she so wonderfully represents the spirit of the holiday season. Twice a year Perkins travels overseas to perform for our troops and throughout the year visits our schools encouraging students to follow their dreams, live a fearless life and make a positive impact on the world. We can never get enough of that. For tickets, call 507/332-7372, go to the Paradise box office or visit paradisecenterforthearts.org.

Simply Fodder For Your Next Cocktail Party By Sherri Faye ©2018

block /bläk/ noun 1. A solid piece of hard material, especially rock, stone, or wood, typically with flat surfaces on each side. “a block of marble” Blocking blockheads on social media has become a more frequent, and necessary, activity of late. Fear not, no political rant here! Everyone is entitled to their view. Besides, mine is right, and yours is wrong. LOL! Anyway, my target here is social media and certain users of it. It saddens and sickens me to see the devolution of communication skills and clear evidence of illiteracy running rampant, especially when one is writing (or typing, as it were) replies, retorts, comments, posts, twits, tweets, and flim-flam-agrams riddled with it-can’t-all-be-autocorrect errors for all the anti-social media world to see... when there is ample time to review one’s verbiage before hitting the send button. Thank the Milky Way, or whatever your beliefs are, that none of us have access to THE button, or we’d be mushrooming into outer space. I am human, so I’ve suffered typer’s remorse. I’ve sent off some regrettable emails, drunk texted the ex, and fired off the occasional quip from hell without conducting an editorial review. I have tried to learn from those mistakes. When I am in that zone, I can craft sharp words faster than a meth fueled razor blade machine at a Schick factory. Although at the time it seems gratifying, like I am getting my message across, it can make a bloody mess of things. That said, I don’t know what bothers me more - the malignant cruelty, the miscarriage of grammar and spelling, the ignorant misuse of common quotes, or the colloquialism butchering. Aaarrgghh! And don’t even get me started on the lack of original thought! The repetitive use of lame-@ss memes, same ol’ name calling, abhorrent sources, and regurgitated “talking points” is a dialogue epidemic! If I ran for office, one of my campaign promises would be a moratorium on the use of any form of the grotesquely overused (and oft misspelled) phrase “Drinking the Kool-Aid.” When any form of that phrase pollutes my feed, I immediately assume that the purveyor of the missive is one chromosome away from being a potato. No offense intended to potatoes. Or Idaho. I’m just calling a spud a spud. I have found that, though I can usually run said spud specimen right into the ground with facts, sources, historical references, and zingers that zoom over their domes like a N. Korean rocket in a no-fly zone, it’s usually best to ignore and move on. By moving on, I mean not engaging in circular arguments that go nowhere. Trying to communicate a redirect as politely as possible is worth a shot. And ignoring daft attempts at rebuttal commentary is a difficult must. If those efforts are not feasible or are doomed to fail, go directly to unfriend, do not pass go, do not collect 200 bitcoins. Final phase, when unfriending proves futile, abort the mission and go to DEFCON 5. Operation BlockAid. B.L.O.C.K. Block! It’s liberating, really. Maintain your peace of mind, set those healthy boundaries, and utilize energy more effectively in the important areas of life. I confess, the comic in me sometimes cannot resist leaving a few “Hey, you, get off of my cloud!” words of wisdom before I send them packing on their troller coaster to daftdom. I do enjoy civilized discussion, intelligent questions, and good humor. I can take a good jab just as easily I can dish it out, but lame attempts at digs can result in an apoplectic fit. Note to self: See about “allergies include: witless or meritless jabs” being added to my VA medical record. But, as I often do, I digress. The holiday season is upon us! My wish for you, dear reader, is for a warm and peaceful season, free from the social media perils I have described above. #MakeAmericaLiterateAgain
