PUBLISHER’S NOTE Earlier this year, while visiting Gardens of Castle Rock, it was suggested that By All Means Graphics, publisher of The Entertainment Guide and full-service print shop, consider publishing a Northfield Area Wedding Guide. The folks at the Gardens get it. They passionately believe that Northfield provides wedding planners with an amazing stage. We have a historic downtown with a river running through it, framed by the natural beauty of the Cannon Valley. Northfield is a vibrant community that offers an array of just the sort of services a wedding could benefit from: caterers, wedding planners, photographers, venues, entertainment, jewelers – the list goes on (see our index of service providers starting on page 32). Our community needed a way to connect all these great service providers with you – the people getting married! To that end Gardens of Castle Rock began hosting a Northfield Area Wedding Vendor Fair every May, linking area service providers with couples anxious to start pulling the players together for their special day. We recognized that this would be a perfect time and place to debut this publication – a publication that captures some of that day’s energy and information, adds to it, and preserves it as a resource for couples and families long after the fair has ended. Several wedding professionals – including some who couldn’t make it to the fair – immediately got on board supporting the publication with advertising, articles, photography and encouragement. To all of them we say THANK YOU! And we hope readers of this publication pull from it as they consider services for their special day. As you flip through these pages, know that nearly every player in every picture, in every article, can be found at the end of the magazine in our index of Wedding Resources. Follow us on Facebook and be sure to visit our up-and-coming web site, www.NorthfieldWeddingGuide.com, where we’ll continue to build this index of wedding resources and post more contributions from wedding service providers in the Northfield area. – Rob Schanilec, publisher By All Means Graphics

Tips for Hiring a
CATERER By Julie Buchwald Haley
Your wedding reception is as much a reflection of you and your spouse-to-be as the wedding. It is likely to be the largest portion of the budget, especially when a lot of guests are coming. There are some important things to keep in mind when planning to and working with the caterer. As you start to plan the food and budget for your reception, think about your favorite restaurant, the foods they serve and the prices of their dishes. If that restaurant you like offers a pasta made with fresh basil pesto, olive oil, garlic and Parmesan cheese sautéed with peppers, onions and fresh fettuccine with a grilled chicken breast for $16.75, and you like the idea of serving it at your reception, then use that number as a starting point for your per-person budget. Your caterer has very similar costs to the restaurant including ingredients, dishes, equipment, staff, rent and other overhead, but delivery and off-site setup by the caterer are line items that are not included in restaurant pricing. Once you have determined the overall catering budget using a restaurant price guide, you’ll be in a much stronger position to talk with caterers about the food choices and pricing for your wedding reception. Per-person pricing may include just the meal and exclude fees for linens, tableware, space rental or delivery charges, cleanup and gratuities. Be sure to ask how your caterer figures the total cost so there aren’t any surprises when the invoice arrives. It’s also important to understand these charges if you need to lower the overall catering bill. Understanding that 30 percent of a per-person price is not food related may help you figure out that changing from 150 people at the reception to 100 or changing from a dinner to a brunch is more affordable. Responsible Sourcing
METALS
By Susan Crow
What are responsibly sourced precious metals? Northfield-based sustainable jeweler, East Fourth Street, uses Fairmined or recycled gold, silver or palladium because it is important to us that we source precious metals from trusted suppliers to ensure that it is as non-impactful, both environmentally and ethically, as possible and benefits artisanal and smallscale mining communities. Fairmined is a globally recognized certification assurance for gold mined from empowered, responsible, small-scale and artisanal mining communities around the world. It creates positive change in mining by implementing and supporting social development and environmental protection. East Fourth Street is one of 36 U.S. jewelers licensed by The Alliance for Responsible Mining to sell Fairmined Gold. The Fairmined label is backed by a 3rd-party certification system that rigorously ensures that the artisanal mining communities are meeting standards set forth for safe and responsible practices. The extra monetary premium that is collected for Fairmined Gold is then paid directly to the mining communities. They use it for improving their mining work conditions and social development for their local communities. The Fairmined certification has routine assessments that ensure miners maintain their certification and are consistent with their social improvement.

DIAMONDS
There are now 10 different mines in four different countries, including Mongolia, Colombia, Peru and Bolivia, which is pretty cool considering that when East Fourth Street was a first adopter in 2012, The Alliance for Responsible Mining started with just one mine in Peru. What is a reclaimed or ethically sourced diamond? Most of our diamonds are sourced from certified reclaimed diamond vendors. These diamonds have been resold and certified by GIA to assure that they are of the graded quality that you want. By using reclaimed, we eliminate the additional environmental and possible ethical problems surrounding newly mined diamonds. For our newly mined diamonds, we don’t just rely on the Kimberly Process Certification because we believe that more due diligence has to be done to ensure that our diamonds did not come from a conflict region. The Kimberly Process certifies diamonds as non-conflict if they are not coming from rebel conflict nations. Unfortunately they cannot control the smuggling of conflict diamonds into non-rebel
environmentally conscious studio
East Fourth Street jewelry is designed and made in Minnesota. Tracing their raw materials and producing with minimal environment impacts is the backbone of the East Fourth Street label. That means they strive for mine-to-market sourcing, zero waste, low-energy use and responsible chemical use. Owner Susan Crow is on the board of Ethical Metalsmiths and chairs their Ethical Sourcing Consortium. They encourage partnerships with other local organizations that support the empowerment of the people, many of them women, that work and live in the mines.

conflict nations, mixing them with Kimberly Process certified diamonds and being sold to the public as non-conflict diamonds. They also do not address ethical abuse or child labor at the mines. Because of this, the newly mined white diamonds we carry come with the additional Jeweltree Certification. We try to do our due diligence and only offer diamonds from trusted suppliers so that our stones don’t come from a conflict region of the world or involve forced or child labor. Our white diamonds are GIA certified and are within 0.05ct of the listed size.
GEM STONES Â
What is an ethically sourced gemstone?
What is an ethically sourced gemstone? Gemstones are very difficult to trace from mine to market to ensure that they have not been mined illegally or come from conflict situations. It is very important to us to know for a fact that no children have been used in the mining or cutting of our gemstones. Our colored gemstones are sourced from some of the most reliable ethical dealers in the country. Many of our gemstones are Fair Trade and help support the mining and cutting communities where they have come from. We believe that it is important to support ethical treatment of workers and to involve them in the mining business to ensure that they are receiving a fair market price for their valuable natural resources. Wedding Lighting Guide By Bryce and Leah Graf
When well designed and with the right equipment, lighting can make everything look better. Proper illumination will showcase details you have spent so many hours perfecting; and it makes for amazing pictures! Lighting is the final touch that can pull all of your planning together to create an elegant and memorable atmosphere for you and your guests. The following are some things to consider when planning lighting for your wedding.
Find a Professional Planning a wedding may seem overwhelming, but lighting doesn’t have to be complicated. Lighting takes a lot of design work and forethought for aesthetics as well as safety. Lighting professionals are familiar with how to highlight a venue’s positive features and properly utilize power capabilities. Many professionals are able to offer higher-quality lights that are safer than the consumer has access to. Experienced lighting designers know what lighting options work best in unique situations.
Indoors vs. Outdoors The location of your wedding reception will impact the kind of lighting you will need. Visit your venue at the time of day your event will be taking place so you can see how the natural lighting looks. This helps in determining which areas could benefit from additional illumination. Even in a space that seems to have sufficient built-in lighting, there are options that can personalize and elevate your wedding to the next level. If your event is being held outdoors at night, it is important to see the location after dark. This will help identify areas that need to be illuminated for safety, as well as to determine the mood you want to set for your guests.
Common Wedding Lighting Options Up-lighting: These lights are the hottest trend for
weddings. Uplights are small lights placed on the perimeter of your venue that illuminate walls from floor to ceiling with colored light. Pin spot: A focused beam of light that shines directly
onto an object. These are typically used to highlight centerpieces or wedding cakes.
Venue: Golden Oak Farm 28
Venue: Carpenter Nature Center
Custom designed and installed LED bistro lighting creates an elegant and illuminated atmosphere showcasing the romance of your wedding and leaving a lasting impression on your guests!
facebook.com/allisbrightlighting Find them at the Northfield Area Wedding Vendor Fair Bistro lighting: These cafĂŠ-style lights add elegance and character to any space including tents, backyards and
large venue halls. String lighting: A strand of mini lights that can be used to create many different effects. There are a variety of
colors and strands depending on the look you are going for.
Bryce and Leah Graf started All is Bright Lighting in 2012 with a goal of providing the best lighting and service available. They use only professional quality LED lights and are always adding the newest and best lighting options to their constantly growing selection. Bryce is passionate about lighting and strives to provide the best lighting experience for his clients. When not working, he enjoys being outdoors and spending time with his family.

BEFORE YOUR BIG DAY
By Lacy Wallin
Congratulations, love birds! You are excited, you are here and considering a photographer to capture your big day, but beware, photographers tend to book up quickly in the summer and fall so contact them right away to ensure they have your date available. They will schedule a meeting or phone conference to discuss your vision for your wedding, and to make sure they can perfectly fit your vision and style. When you decide on a photographer, a deposit is usually required to secure your date. Once booked, the photographer will probably discuss the best package for you and develop a solid timeline for the day to ensure all your “must haves are taken care of. The week before the wedding they may visit your venues to refine the timeline. They should communicate with you on any and all changes and details. Your photographer can be an amazing resource to answer questions on timeline, help structure your day or refer preferred vendors.
WEDDING DAY
Your day has arrived, and you want to be able to take it all in. The photographer will help drive the timeline and keep things on schedule. A good photographer will make adjustments where needed and let you and your wedding party just enjoy the day. They will likely have an assistant, or second shooter (depending on the package selected), to help execute the coverage smoothly. A good photographer always brings backup equipment and is prepared for any technical issues. So you can just breathe.... 30
MR. & MRS.
After your wedding the photographer may post a sneak peek for you to see and share on social media. Your complete fully edited images will usually be ready approximately 6-8 weeks after your big day. Ask your photographer if your package will include a print release to order your images wherever you wish. Photographers can professionally print the images for you, but they can also usually provide printing recommendations.
MEET MATT & HEATHER Locations: The Archer House & Contented Cow Pub Alley Downtown Northfield • East Oaks Photography
My dream was always to have my wedding in the beautiful and historic town of Northfield. The town has so many scenic spaces around the downtown area which makes for an experience you won’t find anywhere else. I contacted East Oaks Photography to capture our wedding day in the Northfield style – simple, elegant and charming. My husband and I married at Northfield’s Church of St. Dominic and celebrated our reception at the Northfield Ballroom, which is just up the road, making easy travel for our guests. The bridal party reserved a stay at the historic Archer House River Inn. The staff was so accommodating and ensured our stay was nothing less than great. There was a lot of space to get ready for the ceremony at the Inn, and it provided unique photo opportunities that showed the wonderful architecture of the building. Northfield is the perfect place to have a wedding day!
