Baldwin Hills: Case Study and Design Proposal Alan Dana & Nicole Friend ARCH 533; Prof. Rachael Berney Spring 2010 Location: Baldwin Hills is located in the center of Los Angeles and inhabits a large area of Inglewood. The 110, 10 and 405 freeways surround the area making it accessible from many points. Existing conditions and vegetation: Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area is located within Baldwin Hills. It is managed by the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation and includes picnic sites, a fishing lake, a community center and athletic fields. 1 The Baldwin Hills area contains a number of native plant species including coastal scrub. The hills vary in slope and elevation ranging from 150-‐500 feet above sea level. Baldwin Hills has a Mediterranean-‐type climate with a southwest breeze off the ocean bringing marine air to the area.2 By increasing the access and vegetation we can improve the legibility producing a successful ecological site. Opportunities and Proposals: Linkability, Educability, Visibility and Adaptability were the focus of our proposal. Linking the east side of Baldwin Hills to the ecological area increases access and visual connection to the site. The proposed site will serve to educate visitors and passersby driving along La Brea avenue. The proposed plan will adapt to increased development around the site with a series of footbridges, turnouts and new trails.
