Interior Voices by Silvia Levenson

Silvia Levenson is an artist who specialises in working in cast glass. Originally from Argentina and now based in Italy, Silvia Levenson creates work that reflects her own memories, her observations of life and injustices experienced on personal and political levels. This exhibition has a focus on home and family, how we present ourselves to the outside world through our homes and the more private side of life and relationships.

Transparent Femininity 22 October – 5 March 2017
This group exhibition explores how a number of artists address issues relating to femininity through their practice in glass. Artist Effie Burns has worked with National Glass Centre to cocurate this exhibition which aims to encourage conversation about issues including femininity, feminism and the expression of emotion. Glasmuseet Ebeltoft Glass Museum Ebeltoft
17 September – Summer 2017 Ebeltoft is a beautiful, traditional town on the central east coast of Denmark. The Glass Museum and its collection of over 1500 objects is a major feature of the town. Artists from countries across the world have donated work to the collection which presents the finest examples of art created in glass. The Museum has kindly loaned a selection of works from its collection for display at National Glass Centre. The exhibition will include a number of works by Finn Lynggaard, one of the Studio Glass pioneers in Denmark and founder of Glasmuseet Ebeltoft.

ArtWorks Fellowships by Effie Burns and Sue Woolhouse 10 September – 22 January 2017
Artists Effie Burns and Sue Woolhouse have spent the last year taking part in the ArtWorks Fellowship, a national project overseen by Barbican and funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. ArtWorks is a scheme supporting artists who work directly with the public sharing their skills and inspiring creativity. Effie Burns and Sue Woolhouse support our learning programme and encourage people of all ages and abilities to work with glass. The Fellowship has provided both artists with opportunities to develop their own skills, which will in turn, feed through into the workshops they offer. Image: Undercover XII , Effie Burns. Frostbite’s Big Adventure!
Frostbite was also a Snowdog with big dreams and loved going on adventures.
19 September – 29 November 2016 Once upon a time, there lived an Ice Queen and her best friend Frostbite. They lived in a frosty palace in the shimmering snowy lands of The Ice Forest. Everyone in the Kingdom loved their queen and her faithful companion. Frostbite was an unusual dog, made entirely from ice and snow. He had beautiful fur, made of large icy shards; he had an icy orange nose and large icy pink patches on either side of his body. Frostbite loved playing outside and made friends with all the creatures across the land. He had one icy blue ear which he used to listen to the creatures of the sea and with his other icy green ear he listened to the animals of the earth. He also always wore a pair of red wellington boots the Ice Queen gave him for Christmas one year, they were his favourite present ever, and he never takes them off!
One evening, as Frostbite and The Ice Queen gazed across the frozen lake and snow covered trees, a shooting star appeared across the night sky. Frostbite knew exactly what he wanted to wish for, so he shut his eyes and wished harder than he had ever wished before. He wished to go on the biggest adventure of his life! The next morning, over breakfast, The Ice Queen said “Frostbite, my beloved friend, I have a very special job for you. I need you to go and visit the children who live in another land, it’s called Sunderland.” “Where is that, and why do I need to go there?” asked Frostbite inquisitively. “It’s in another world far, far away.” said the Queen. “I need you to go so you can learn about glass, how it’s made, and why it’s so important to the history of Sunderland.”

“But why do I need to learn about glass?” asked Frostbite “You’ll see, one day glass will be a very important part of who you are!” said The Ice Queen, with a kind smile on her face. “You can share what you have learnt with the children who come to visit. It’s going to be a very big adventure for you!” “I can’t wait!” barked Frostbite. The Ice Queen kissed his forehead and clicked her fingers and Frostbite disappeared from the palace. The Ice Queen knew his icy fur would melt in this new land so cast a spell on him so that as he entered our world Frostbite’s icy fur turned to glass. Frostbite didn’t know where to go, but then, as if by magic he heard The Ice Queen’s voice guiding him through whispers in the wind... “I know!” he exclaimed “I’ll go where everyone will admire me, where everyone loves glass, National Glass Centre!” Frostbite was very excited to meet everyone at National Glass Centre and made lots of new friends, he loved it so much he decided he was going to stay for a while. So for now Frostbite’s big adventure has just begun!

Make a Glass Pumpkin Create a colourful hot glass pumpkin for Halloween! These experiences offer you the opportunity to personalise your pumpkin by applying coloured glass at over 1100 degrees centigrade. Working closely with our Hot Glass Studio Team you will blow down the ‘iron’ to blow a bubble into the glass. The glass artists will finish your artwork by using a mould to create the pumpkin shape and add a colourful stem in the effect of your choice!

Sunderland Literature and Creative Writing Festival

Friday 30 September - Monday 31 October This annual celebration of the written word has something for everyone. The diverse programme features many local artists and authors including Jayne Hughes, Fiona Veitch Smith, Amanda Revell Walton and Tony Wilson as well as a Comedy Writing Workshop and Writing Crime Fiction with Ann Cleeves and David Mark.
Sunderland born writer Alan Parkinson has spent the majority of his life living in his native city. He has written two novels, Leg It and Idle Threats. Both are set in Sunderland and lean heavily on his experiences growing up in Southwick and living and working on Wearside. The audience will be able to listen to Alan present his experiences, ask questions and also purchase his books.
There are also family history taster sessions, music and singing for young children, reading and creative writing groups and workshops, poetry, book-related crafts and more.
