Exhibitions
Jewellery: Wearable Glass National Glass Centre presents an exhibition of newly commissioned glass jewellery made through exciting new collaborations between four artists working in glass and eight jewellers. Each jeweller has received one to one support from our resident artists who specialise in different technique’s associated with glass including hot glass, lamp work, casting, waterjet cutting and fusing. The exhibition re-invents something that is familiar to all of us by using new forms and combinations of materials. Working in glass the artists have explored the complexity of the material and have experimented to create new pieces that challenge our traditional image of jewellery. This exciting new 'wearable glass' will be presented alongside the twelve artist's more established work allowing the viewer to compare the difference between artist's work in glass and jewellery and what happens when they are brought together. Glasmuseet Ebeltoft Ebeltoft Glass Museum 17 September 2016 – 3 September 2017 Ebeltoft is a beautiful, traditional town on the central east coast of Denmark. The Glass Museum and its collection of over 1500 objects is a major feature of the town. Artists from countries across the world have donated work to the collection which presents the finest examples of art created in glass. The museum has kindly loaned a selection of works from its collection for display at National Glass Centre. The exhibition will include a number of works by Finn Lynggaard, one of the Studio Glass pioneers in Denmark and founder of Glasmuseet Ebeltoft. National Glass Centre and North Lands Creative Glass work in partnership to support and promote the finest work by international
artists working in glass. Every year North Lands Creative Glass offers a series of masterclasses in Lybster, Caithness. The leaders of this year’s masterclasses are Annie Cattrell, Josie Gluck and Michael Schunke, Beth Lipman and Anne Vibeke Mou. This exhibition presents examples of work by these artists. Victoria Scholes: Artist Access to Art Schools
8 April – 18 June 2017 The programme ‘Artist Access to Art Schools’ creates opportunities for practicing artists to access equipment held within universities and to benefit from the advice of staff for a fixed period of time. Victoria Scholes has just completed her Artist Access to Art Schools residency and this exhibition presents the work she has created while working at National Glass Centre at the University of Sunderland.

This exhibition of international artists is staged in the historic buildings of Montpellier University’s original libraries. Montpellier was one of the first universities in the world to pioneer modern medical sciences, and this exhibition pairs eleven artists with objects from its extraordinary collections of European drawings, natural history collections, and earlymodern medical artefacts. The contemporary artists are from Germany, France, Canada, Macedonia and the UK, and examine how we see the world through objects - and how objects act upon us. Alongside are chances to view seldom-seen works by some of the most celebrated artists of all time, including Breughel and Tiepolo. The show takes the anthropologist of science Bruno Latour’s idea of how objects interact with each other and with us as its starting point – an idea he has labelled “interobjectivity”. Created in partnership with Montpellier University, Newcastle University, Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Montpellier Agglomération, and La Panacée, Centre de culture contemporaine , Montpellier.

Artist Simon Martin has created two new sound works for a pair of extraordinary but little-known private spaces on the River Wear. The Norman Chapel is the oldest building in Durham; Trevelyan College is an astonishing 1960s architectural experiment in which no walls are at right angles. Martin’s works are made the digital technologies used to create electronic music and ask us to listen carefully to the way their rhythms and sounds change over time, making us conscious of the spaces we inhabit.
Chad McCail ‘Liars of Earth’
Long Gallery, National Glass Centre 24 June – 8 October 2017 NGCA presents the national premiere of Chad McCail’s near 100foot long drawing ‘Liars of Earth’. McCail’s parable has a political twist in the tale, presenting a world in which ordinary people are able to overturn the malign rule of monstrous giants.

Bring Your Talent - National Glass Centre Summer School! Monday 24 July – Friday 28 July 10.00 – 15.00 / £180 / Age 12-15 Whether you are interested in the visual arts, craft and design or photography this week long summer school will give you the opportunity to develop your artistic practice by learning how to work with glass. On this course you will: • Learn how to sand blast, fuse, cut and copper foil glass • Work in groups and as an individual to create art using different materials • Lead a workshop • Work with practicing artists • Gain a qualification • Make new friends
Who is it for? Young people between the age of 12 and 15 who have a passion for art and would like to experience a new material and approach. What will you gain? By the end of the course you will have a good understanding of glass art by working with artists and technicians. You will have made several pieces, researched and interviewed artists and have gained a Bronze Arts Award, an accredited qualification from Trinity College London. How does it work? Young people will take part in workshops to learn about creative glassmaking techniques, they will also plan and deliver workshops to other students, interview artists and review exhibitions. Friday afternoon will be a showcase of work made during the project, guests are welcome to come and view the artwork on display from 2pm. Lunch and refreshments are not included.

Bend Me Shape Me with Zoe Garner FIVE DAY MASTER CLASS July 31 – August 4 / 10.00 – 16.00 / £695 – light lunch included each day in our eatery The Glass Yard Booking Essential Drawing concepts, ideas and designs from the beautiful local environment this skills based class will explore the possibilities and potential of flameworked Borosilicate glass in Contemporary Art. Using Clear borosilicate over five days. Glass (PYREX) solid glass rods will be transformed in to sculptural components and glass tube will be blown to be connected in the flame to form larger scale installations. Through a combination of demonstrations and free practice time, starting from basics we will build a vocabulary of flameworking skills that will form a solid grounding to move forward using flameworking as an art form.
Introduction to Casting with Effie Burns FIVE DAY BEGINNERS’ COURSE July 24 – 28 July / 10.00 – 16.00 / £595 – light lunch included each day in our eatery The Glass Yard Booking Essential This week long course suitable for beginners will show you how to create a range of beautiful cast glass pieces. You will be supported to make work that is important to you, whether your inspiration comes from the land or the sea or your family history. The course will cover using clay and wax to create form and texture, an introduction to mould making and cold working. You will learn how to make small intricate cast glass pieces, how to make and fire an open cast mould and how to do lost wax casting. The final day of the course will introduce you to the technique of pâte de verre. An ideal opportunity to experiment, learn new things and enjoy the making process.
