3 Solo Shows Revised De La Torre Brothers, Richard Meitner and Petr Stanický 17 May – 14 September
Artists Petr Stanický, Richard Meitner and the De La Torre Brothers have each been given space at National Glass Centre to present a ‘solo show’. The result is three exhibitions presenting great contrast in terms of glass making technique, artistic approach and cultural influence. The De La Torre Brothers’ work ranges from hot glass to lenticular printing. Their influences include traditional Mexican folk art, popular culture, art history and their Catholic upbringing. Petr Stanický’s work is comparatively architectural and can relate as much to the space that it creates as it does to his use of glass and other materials. At National Glass Centre he has responded to the architecture of the building, creating new site-specific work.
Artist and Curator Talk Curator Jeroen Maes and artists the De La Torre Brothers, Richard Meitner and Petr Stanický discuss the exhibition / 14 May / 16.00 – 18.00 / Lecture Theatre 007, Prospect Building, St. Peter’s Campus, University of Sunderland 02
Acknowledged internationally as a master of glass, Richard Meitner’s work links Surrealism with simple pure form. It combines humour, science and humanity and uses strong but delicately balanced colour and material combinations. The majority of work shown has been created for this exhibition and represents the most recent development in his practice. The exhibition was curated by Jeroen Maes, Artistic Director at GlazenHuis, the Flemish Centre for Contemporary Glass Art. It was originally shown at GlazenHuis during the summer of 2013 and has been revised by Jeroen Maes for National Glass Centre. hetglazenhuis.be delatorresbros.com richardmeitner.com petrstanicky.com

National Art and Design Saturday Club
Glass and Ceramics Degree Show
The National Art and Design Saturday Club is a scheme for 14-16 year olds to nurture the members’ creative talents, build confidence and introduce them to pathways into further and higher education, and careers in the creative industries.
Emerging artists from the BA (Hons) Glass and Ceramics degree course will be making their debut this June with their degree show. The show features the work of final year students who have used glass and ceramics to express themselves in a world of visual and tactile art and represents the culmination of three years of hard work and learning. The range of work showcases the great diversity of glass and ceramics and a wide range of techniques. The exhibition shows a diverse range of ideas and themes including expressive sculptures of the human form, pieces inspired by dancing with glass, memories of the illusive ‘perfect day’ and the notion of fragility expressed through intricate powdered glass pattern.
2 April – 15 June
From October 2013, up to twenty-five young people from all over the North East have attended the National Art and Design Saturday Club at National Glass Centre. The Club Members have worked on a variety of projects in various disciplines, under the guidance of the University of Sunderland’s expert tutors and lecturers. They have also had the opportunity to attend an inspirational master class with internationally renowned ceramicist Magdalene Odundo. This exhibition brings together the Club Members’ two-dimensional group work which explores the concepts of abstraction and mark making.

Sunderland has a rich heritage of glass making that dates back to 674AD. Using compelling personal stories from local people and striking audio visual display, this interactive exhibition charts the origins, growth and legacy of glass making in the City.
